The importance to the biotic community of various species of lemmings in arctic and subarctic regions has long been recognized, but there is little known about the ecology of these mammals. of the two species that occur on the Arctic Slope of Alaska, namely, the collared lemming, Dicrostonyx groenlandicus rubricatus (Richardson), and the brown lemming, Lemmus trimucronatus alascensis Merriam, during the spring of 1949 the writer had the good fortune to observe a cyclic decline in the population of the brown lemming on the Arctic Coast of Alaska. Observations were made during the peak density preceding this decline and were continued for more than a year subsequent to it. It is the purpose of this paper to present the results of these studies.

Broad-spectrum herbicide applications and improved harvesting efficiency of crops have reduced the availability of weed seeds and waste grains for game and nongame wildlife. Over the last decade, corn and soybean plantings have steadily increased in the Prairie Pothole Region (PPR) of North Dakota, while sunflower plantings have declined. The PPR is an important corridor for migratory birds, and changes in food availabilities at stopover habitats may affect how food resources are used. In early spring 2003 and 2004, we compared bird use of harvested fields of sunflower, soybeans, small grains, and corn in the PPR of North Dakota. Across both years and all crop types, we observed 20,400 birds comprising 29 species. Flocks of Lapland Longspurs (Calcarius lapponicus) and Horned Larks (Eremophila alpestris) and flocks of Red-winged Blackbirds (Agelaius phoeniceus) made up 60% and 15%, respectively, of the bird counts. We found that species richness and bird densities were higher in harvested sunflower fields and cornfields than in harvested small-grain and soybean fields, with soybean fields harboring the fewest species and lowest bird density. Blackbird densities tended to be lower in fields tilled after fall harvest than in fields not tilled. These results suggest that some granivorous bird populations in the Northern Great Plains could be positively affected by planting of row crops with postharvest vertical structure (e.g., sunflower, corn) and use of no-till land management practices.

The coastal upwelling off Cabo Frio (SE Brazilian coast, SEBC) represents an exception to the world`s oceans since the majority of the upwelling areas are located in eastern boundary current systems. Cabo Frio represents an interesting area for investigation due to its tight physical-biological interaction and the importance of the region as a major fishery area in the SEBC. We analyzed a suite of lipid biomarkers to apportion the main sources of organic matter in surface sediments of the continental shelf off Cabo Frio, comparing the area to non-upwelling regions off the SEBC (shelf break off Cabo Frio and continental shelf off Ubatuba). During spring and summer (the upwelling period), diatoms are probably the major sources of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) and C-28 sterols in surface sediments from Cabo Frio continental shelf. Sediments sampled in winter showed, in contrast, lower relative abundance of PUFAs and higher stanol/stenol ratio values. In deeper regions off Cabo Frio, elevated concentrations of alkenones, 24-methylcholest-5,22E-dien-3 beta-ol and 24-ethylcholest-5-en-3 beta-ol during the spring may be produced by prymnesiophytes or cryptophytes and cyanobacteria, respectively. In Ubatuba, the C-27 and C-28 sterols are likely derived from omnivorous salps and nanoflagellates. At non-upwelling areas, despite the increase in biomarker concentrations during spring and summer, lower concentrations of PUFAs, phytol and algal sterols than in shelf areas off Cabo Frio suggest the importance of the upwelling system to the rapid transfer of organic carbon to surface sediments. Our results suggest that spatial and temporal variability in organic matter production and deposition merits consideration for constraining the carbon budgets in the coastal region off Cabo Frio. A taxonomic and annotated functional description of microbial life was deduced from 53 Mb of metagenomic sequence retrieved from a planktonic fraction of the Neotropical high Andean (3,973 meters above sea level) acidic hot spring El Coquito (EC). A classification of unassembled metagenomic reads using different databases showed a high proportion of Gammaproteobacteria and Alphaproteobacteria (in total read affiliation), and through taxonomic affiliation of 16S rRNA gene fragments we observed the presence of Proteobacteria, micro-algae chloroplast and Firmicutes. Reads mapped against the genomes Acidiphilium cryptum JF-5, Legionella pneumophila str. Corby and Acidithiobacillus caldus revealed the presence of transposase-like sequences, potentially involved in horizontal gene transfer. Functional annotation and hierarchical comparison with different datasets obtained by pyrosequencing in different ecosystems showed that the microbial community also contained extensive DNA repair systems, possibly to cope with ultraviolet radiation at such high altitudes. Analysis of genes involved in the nitrogen cycle indicated the presence of dissimilatory nitrate reduction to N2 (narGHI, nirS, norBCDQ and nosZ), associated with Proteobacteria-like sequences. Genes involved in the sulfur cycle (cysDN, cysNC and aprA) indicated adenylsulfate and sulfite production that were affiliated to several bacterial species. In summary, metagenomic sequence data provided insight regarding the structure and possible functions of this hot spring microbial community, describing some groups potentially involved in the nitrogen and sulfur cycling in this environment. We investigate the nonequilibrium roughening transition of a one-dimensional restricted solid-on-solid model by directly sampling the stationary probability density of a suitable order parameter as the surface adsorption rate varies. The shapes of the probability density histograms suggest a typical Ginzburg-Landau scenario for the phase transition of the model, and estimates of the "magnetic" exponent seem to confirm its mean-field critical behavior. We also found that the flipping times between the metastable phases of the model scale exponentially with the system size, signaling the breaking of ergodicity in the thermodynamic limit. Incidentally, we discovered that a closely related model not considered before also displays a phase transition with the same critical behavior as the original model. Our results support the usefulness of off-critical histogram techniques in the investigation of nonequilibrium phase transitions. We also briefly discuss in the appendix a good and simple pseudo-random number generator used in our simulations.

Within this work, a particle-polymer surface system is studied with respect to the particle-surface interactions. The latter are governed by micromechanics and are an important aspect for a wide range of industrial applications. Here, a new methodology is developed for understanding the adhesion process and measure the relevant forces, based on the quartz crystal microbalance, QCM. rnThe potential of the QCM technique for studying particle-surface interactions and reflect the adhesion process is evaluated by carrying out experiments with a custom-made setup, consisting of the QCM with a 160 nm thick film of polystyrene (PS) spin-coated onto the quartz and of glass particles, of different diameters (5-20µm), deposited onto the polymer surface. Shifts in the QCM resonance frequency are monitored as a function of the oscillation amplitude. The induced frequency shifts of the 3rd overtone are found to decrease or increase, depending on the particle-surface coupling type and the applied oscillation (frequency and amplitude). For strong coupling the 3rd harmonic decreased, corresponding to an “added mass” on the quartz surface. However, positive frequency shifts are observed in some cases and are attributed to weak-coupling between particle and surface. Higher overtones, i.e. the 5th and 7th, were utilized in order to derive additional information about the interactions taking place. For small particles, the shift for specific overtones can increase after annealing, while for large particle diameters annealing causes a negative frequency shift. The lower overtones correspond to a generally strong-coupling regime with mainly negative frequency shifts observed, while the 7th appears to be sensitive to the contact break-down and the recorded shifts are positive.rnDuring oscillation, the motion of the particles and the induced frequency shift of the QCM are governed by a balance between inertial forces and contact forces. The adherence of the particles can be increased by annealing the PS film at 150°C, which led to the formation of a PS meniscus. For the interpretation, the Hertz, Johnson-Kendall-Roberts, Derjaguin-Müller-Toporov and the Mindlin theory of partial slip are considered. The Mindlin approach is utilized to describe partial slip. When partial slip takes place induced by an oscillating load, a part of the contact ruptures. This results in a decrease of the effective contact stiffness. Additionally, there are long-term memory effects due to the consolidation which along with the QCM vibrations induce a coupling increase. However, the latter can also break the contact, lead to detachment and even surface damage and deformation due to inertia. For strong coupling the particles appear to move with the vibrations and simply act as added effective mass leading to a decrease of the resonance frequency, in agreement with the Sauerbrey equation that is commonly used to calculate the added mass on a QCM). When the system enters the weak-coupling regime the particles are not able to follow the fast movement of the QCM surface. Hence, they effectively act as adding a “spring” with an additional coupling constant and increase the resonance frequency. The frequency shift, however, is not a unique function of the coupling constant. Furthermore, the critical oscillation amplitude is determined, above which particle detach. No movement is detected at much lower amplitudes, while for intermediate values, lateral particle displacement is observed. rnIn order to validate the QCM results and study the particle effects on the surface, atomic force microscopy, AFM, is additionally utilized, to image surfaces and measure surface forces. By studying the surface of the polymer film after excitation and particle removal, AFM imaging helped in detecting three different meniscus types for the contact area: the “full contact”, the “asymmetrical” and a third one including a “homocentric smaller meniscus”. The different meniscus forms result in varying bond intensity between particles and polymer film, which could explain the deviation between number of particles per surface area measured by imaging and the values provided by the QCM - frequency shift analysis. The asymmetric and the homocentric contact types are suggested to be responsible for the positive frequency shifts observed for all three measured overtones, i.e. for the weak-coupling regime, while the “full contact” type resulted in a negative frequency shift, by effectively contributing to the mass increase of the quartz..rnThe interplay between inertia and contact forces for the particle-surface system leads to strong- or weak-coupling, with the particle affecting in three mentioned ways the polymer surface. This is manifested in the frequency shifts of the QCM system harmonics which are used to differentiate between the two interaction types and reflect the overall state of adhesion for particles of different size.rn

We report a case involving a spring-gun device (muzzleloader) loaded solely with gunpowder, installed next to shoes to prevent the neighbors' puppy from removing them. The booby trap was triggered by the 15-year-old dog-owners son when he tried to put the shoes out of the reach of the puppy. The boy suffered second degree superficial burns located mainly at the dorsal side of the right hand and fingers. To estimate the danger of the used weapon, several tests were undertaken on soap blocks from different distances and with different loads of black powder. The particle density per mm and the depth of black powder tattooing in the soap was compared with the boy's injuries, and found conclusive with the gun-owners statement regarding the loading of the weapon. Furthermore, our experiments indicated that the gunpowder load involved was not able to inflict permanent damage, not even to the eyes, at the here estimated firing distance.
