Species occurrence and abundance models are important tools that can be used in biodiversity conservation, and can be applied to predict or plan actions needed to mitigate the environmental impacts of hydropower dams. In this study our objectives were: (i) to model the occurrence and abundance of threatened plant species, (ii) to verify the relationship between predicted occurrence and true abundance, and (iii) to assess whether models based on abundance are more effective in predicting species occurrence than those based on presence–absence data. Individual representatives of nine species were counted within 388 randomly georeferenced plots (10 m × 50 m) around the Barra Grande hydropower dam reservoir in southern Brazil. We modelled their relationship with 15 environmental variables using both occurrence (Generalised Linear Models) and abundance data (Hurdle and Zero-Inflated models). Overall, occurrence models were more accurate than abundance models. For all species, observed abundance was significantly, although not strongly, correlated with the probability of occurrence. This correlation lost significance when zero-abundance (absence) sites were excluded from analysis, but only when this entailed a substantial drop in sample size. The same occurred when analysing relationships between abundance and probability of occurrence from previously published studies on a range of different species, suggesting that future studies could potentially use probability of occurrence as an approximate indicator of abundance when the latter is not possible to obtain. This possibility might, however, depend on life history traits of the species in question, with some traits favouring a relationship between occurrence and abundance. Reconstructing species abundance patterns from occurrence could be an important tool for conservation planning and the management of threatened species, allowing scientists to indicate the best areas for collection and reintroduction of plant germplasm or choose conservation areas most likely to maintain viable populations.

Eucalyptus spp genus is economically important to different industry fields. There are pests that damage the development of eucalypts and Glycaspis brimblecombei, a sap-sucking insect, is one of them. Studies about this insect attack to the eucalypts showed preferences. This work aim was to compare the preferences of the insect with thermoanalytical characteristics of different eucalypts (susceptible, less susceptible and resistant to Glycaspis brimblecombei) essential oils. The leaves of six species of Eucalyptus were crushed and the essential oil was extracted using Clevenger apparatus. The Shimadzu DTG-60H was used to analyze the samples. The results showed that the samples from more susceptible eucalypts had total mass loss at about 124ºC to 156ºC, lower than samples from more resistant eucalypts (from 168ºC to 175ºC). Furthermore, the study suggests that the susceptibility or the resistance of eucalypts to the pest may be related to their essential oil composition and concentration of monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes.

Silicon-based discrete high-power devices need to be designed with optimal performance up to several thousand volts and amperes to reach power ratings ranging from few kWs to beyond the 1 GW mark. To this purpose, a key element is the improvement of the junction termination (JT) since it allows to drastically reduce surface electric field peaks which may lead to an earlier device failure. This thesis will be mostly focused on the negative bevel termination which from several years constitutes a standard processing step in bipolar production lines. A simple methodology to realize its counterpart, a planar JT with variation of the lateral doping concentration (VLD) will be also described. On the JT a thin layer of a semi insulating material is usually deposited, which acts as passivation layer reducing the interface defects and contributing to increase the device reliability. A thorough understanding of how the passivation layer properties affect the breakdown voltage and the leakage current of a fast-recovery diode is fundamental to preserve the ideal termination effect and provide a stable blocking capability. More recently, amorphous carbon, also called diamond-like carbon (DLC), has been used as a robust surface passivation material. By using a commercial TCAD tool, a detailed physical explanation of DLC electrostatic and transport properties has been provided. The proposed approach is able to predict the breakdown voltage and the leakage current of a negative beveled power diode passivated with DLC as confirmed by the successfully validation against the available experiments. In addition, the VLD JT proposed to overcome the limitation of the negative bevel architecture has been simulated showing a breakdown voltage very close to the ideal one with a much smaller area consumption. Finally, the effect of a low junction depth on the formation of current filaments has been analyzed by performing reverse-recovery simulations.

The European brown hare (Lepus europaeus Pallas, 1778) is an important game species, distributed across Europe and introduced in other regions. Recently, a geographically isolated population, closely related to an ancestral lineage of Lepus europaeus meridiei, was found on Pianosa Island, off the coast of Tuscany, Italy (Mengoni et al., 2018). Thus, the unique opportunity to explore the evolution and genetic structure of its helminth parasites was added to its exceptional isolation condition. Various lungworm species within the genus Protostrongylus (Nematoda: Protostrongylidae) are described in European brown hares. Our aim was to analyze the parasite population through morphological and molecular approaches in order to study the biogeography of the European brown hares (L. e. meridiei) population from Pianosa Island. Moreover, we investigated the morphology of a monospecific genus, i.e. Orthostrongylus, considering its quite intrigant descriptive history and its still unclear and debated classification. Nuclear and mitochondrial markers were used based on their resolution power and expected polymorphism; the whole Internal Transcribed Spacer 1 and 2 (ITS), including the 5.8S rRNA sequence and the Large Subunit (28S) were used, as nuclear genes, for confirmation of the species identification. Conversely, the cytochrome oxidase c subunit I (COI) was used, as mithocondrial genes, to assess interspecific genetic relationships. Molecular analysis corroborated the morphological identification since all the generated ITS and LSU sequences were 100% consistent with the species Protostrongylus oryctolagi and Orthostrongylus macrotis. The paucity of molecular data existent about this genus of parasites underlines the need for more insight’s studies. An in-depth analysis of broncho-pulmonary parasites and the host-parasites relationships along with the improvement of the use of mitochondrial genes, as well as the assessment of new polymorphic markers could contribute to an extensive understanding of parasites fauna and taxonomy, as well as their relationship with wild mammals’ hosts.

In this thesis, a TCAD approach for the investigation of charge transport in amorphous silicon dioxide is presented for the first time. The proposed approach is used to investigate high-voltage silicon oxide thick TEOS capacitors embedded in the back-end inter-level dielectric layers for galvanic insulation applications. In the first part of this thesis, a detailed review of the main physical and chemical properties of silicon dioxide and the main physical models for the description of charge transport in insulators are presented. In the second part, the characterization of high-voltage MIM structures at different high-field stress conditions up to the breakdown is presented. The main physical mechanisms responsible of the observed results are then discussed in details. The third part is dedicated to the implementation of a TCAD approach capable of describing charge transport in silicon dioxide layers in order to gain insight into the microscopic physical mechanisms responsible of the leakage current in MIM structures. In particular, I investigated and modeled the role of charge injection at contacts and charge build-up due to trapping and de-trapping mechanisms in the oxide layer to the purpose of understanding its behavior under DC and AC stress conditions. In addition, oxide breakdown due to impact-ionization of carriers has been taken into account in order to have a complete representation of the oxide behavior at very high fields. Numerical simulations have been compared against experiments to quantitatively validate the proposed approach. In the last part of the thesis, the proposed approach has been applied to simulate the breakdown in realistic structures under different stress conditions. The TCAD tool has been used to carry out a detailed analysis of the most relevant physical quantities, in order to gain a detailed understanding on the main mechanisms responsible for breakdown and guide design optimization.

This thesis investigates a broad range of topics related to insurance, market power, and inequality, both from an empirical and a theoretical perspective. In the first chapter, I exploit the significant heterogeneity of the shocks hitting Ethiopian households and their heterogeneous response, using relatively recent data (World Bank's LSMS-ISA for households and satellite data for weather shocks). On the one hand, households seem able to insure against most idiosyncratic and mild adverse weather shocks. On the other hand, vulnerability to stronger weather shocks (especially droughts) remains elevated. In the second chapter, starting from firms' individual data, aggregate trends about industry concentration and other proxies of competition are built. This chapter is part of a larger project conducted at the OECD in the Productivity Innovation and Entrepreneurship Division of the STI Directorate The project innovates on the existing literature in its measurement of concentration, aimed at reflecting markets more accurately. On average, aggregate concentration is found to be increasing. In the third chapter, which only lays out some preliminary steps of a more extensive inquiry, I model the heterogeneous effects of aggregate technological progress on individual economic agents and show how this can affect aggregate inequality and other aggregate indicators studied in the macroeconomics literature, such as the entrepreneurship rate and the overall firm distribution. It should be noted, however, that this note is a simple exposition of a possible modelling device rather than a full explanation of these phenomena.

This Doctoral Thesis aims at studying, developing, and characterizing cutting edge equipment for EMC measurements and proposing innovative and advanced power line filter design techniques. This document summarizes a three-year work, is strictly industry oriented and relies on EMC standards and regulations. It contains the main results, findings, and effort with the purpose of bringing innovative contributions at the scientific community. Conducted emissions interferences are usually suppressed with power line filters. These filters are composed by common mode chokes, X capacitors and Y capacitors in order to mitigate both the differential mode and common mode noise, which compose the overall conducted emissions. However, even at present days, available power line filter design techniques show several disadvantages. First of all, filters are designed to be implemented in ideal 50 Ω systems, condition which is far away from reality. Then, the attenuation introduced by the filter for common or differential mode noise is analyzed independently, without considering the possible mode conversion that can be produced by impedance mismatches, or asymmetries in either the power line filter itself or the equipment under test. Ultimately, the instrumentation used to perform conducted emissions measurement is, in most cases, not adequate. All these factors lead to an inaccurate design, contributing at increasing the size of the filter, making it more expensive and less performant than it should be.

In recent years, energy modernization has focused on smart engineering advancements. This entails designing complicated software and hardware for variable-voltage digital substations. A digital substation consists of electrical and auxiliary devices, control and monitoring devices, computers, and control software. Intelligent measurement systems use digital instrument transformers and IEC 61850-compliant information exchange protocols in digital substations. Digital instrument transformers used for real-time high-voltage measurements should combine advanced digital, measuring, information, and communication technologies. Digital instrument transformers should be cheap, small, light, and fire- and explosion-safe. These smaller and lighter transformers allow long-distance transmission of an optical signal that gauges direct or alternating current. Cost-prohibitive optical converters are a problem. To improve the tool's accuracy, amorphous alloys are used in the magnetic circuits and compensating feedback. Large-scale voltage converters can be made cheaper by using resistive, capacitive, or hybrid voltage dividers. In known electronic voltage transformers, the voltage divider output is generally on the low-voltage side, facilitating power supply organization. Combining current and voltage transformers reduces equipment size, installation, and maintenance costs. These two gadgets cost less together than individually. To increase commercial power metering accuracy, current and voltage converters should be included into digital instrument transformers so that simultaneous analogue-to-digital samples are obtained. Multichannel ADC microcircuits with synchronous conversion start allow natural parallel sample drawing. Digital instrument transformers are created adaptable to substation operating circumstances and environmental variables, especially ambient temperature. An embedded microprocessor auto-diagnoses and auto-calibrates the proposed digital instrument transformer.

Mixing is a fundamental unit operation in the pharmaceutical industry to ensure consistent product quality across different batches. It is usually carried out in mechanically stirred tanks, with a large variety of designs according to the process requirements. A key aspect of pharmaceutical manufacturing is the extensive and meticulous cleaning of the vessels between runs to prevent the risk of contamination. Single-use reactors represent an increasing trend in the industry since they do not require cleaning and sterilization, reducing the need for utilities such as steam to sterilize equipment and the time between production batches. In contrast to traditional stainless steel vessels, single-use reactors consist of a plastic bag used as a vessel and disposed of after use. This thesis aims to characterize the fluid dynamics features and the mixing performance of a commercially available single-use reactor. The characterization employs a combination of various experimental techniques. The analysis starts with the visual observation of the liquid behavior inside the vessel, focusing on the vortex shape evolution at different impeller speeds. The power consumption is then measured using a torque meter to quantify the power number. Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) is employed to investigate local fluid dynamics properties such as mean flow field and mean and rms velocity profiles. The same experimental setup of PIV is exploited for another optical measurement technique, the Planar Laser-Induced Fluorescence (PLIF). The PLIF measurements complete the characterization of the reactor with the qualitative visualization of the turbulent flow and the quantitative assessment of the system performance through the mixing time. The results confirm good mixing performances for the single-use reactor over the investigated impeller speeds and reveal that the filling volume plays a significant role in the fluid dynamics of the system.

Chemical cross-linking has emerged as a powerful approach for the structural characterization of proteins and protein complexes. However, the correct identification of covalently linked (cross-linked or XL) peptides analyzed by tandem mass spectrometry is still an open challenge. Here we present SIM-XL, a software tool that can analyze data generated through commonly used cross-linkers (e.g., BS3/DSS). Our software introduces a new paradigm for search-space reduction, which ultimately accounts for its increase in speed and sensitivity. Moreover, our search engine is the first to capitalize on reporter ions for selecting tandem mass spectra derived from cross-linked peptides. It also makes available a 2D interaction map and a spectrum-annotation tool unmatched by any of its kind. We show SIM-XL to be more sensitive and faster than a competing tool when analyzing a data set obtained from the human HSP90. The software is freely available for academic use at http://patternlabforproteomics.org/sim-xl. A video demonstrating the tool is available at http://patternlabforproteomics.org/sim-xl/video. SIM-XL is the first tool to support XL data in the mzIdentML format; all data are thus available from the ProteomeXchange consortium (identifier PXD001677).
