The new erbium(III) complex of picolinic acid (Hpic), ["Bu4N][Er(pic)(4)].5.5H(2)O, was synthesized and the crystal structure determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The compound was further characterized using IR, Raman, H-1 NMR and elemental analysis. The picolinate ligands (pic(-)) are coordinated through N,O-chelation to the erbium cations, as shown by X-ray diffraction and spectroscopic results, leading to an eight coordinate complex. Photoluminescence measurements were performed for this compound which exhibits infrared emission. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

On stirring an equimolar mixture of 4-oxo-4H-chromene-3-carbaldehyde, ninhydrin and cyclohexyl isocyanide in CH(2)Cl(2)-MeOH (7: 1) at room temperature produces 3-cyclohexylimino-1-(2-hydroxy-1,3-dioxo-2,3-dihydro-1H-inden-2-yl)-1,3-dihydro-9H-furo[3,4-b]chromen-9-one which on hydrolysis produces 1-(2-hydroxy-1,3-dioxo-2,3-dihydro-1H-inden-2-yl)-1H-furo[3,4-b]chromene-3,9-dione. The structure of the latter compound was confirmed by single crystal X-ray diffraction

On December 9, 2007, a 4.9 m(b) earthquake occurred in the middle of the Sao Francisco Craton, in a region with no known previous activity larger than 4 m(b). This event reached intensity VII MM (Modified Mercalli) causing the first fatal victim in Brazil. The activity had started in May 25, 2007 with a 3.5 magnitude event and continued for several months, motivating the deployment of a local 6-station network. A three week seismic quiescence was observed before the mainshock. Initial absolute hypocenters were calculated with best fitting velocity models and then relative locations were determined with hypoDD. The aftershock distribution indicates a 3 km long rupture for the mainshock. The fault plane solution, based on P-wave polarities and hypocentral trend, indicates a reverse faulting mechanism on a N30 degrees E striking plane dipping about 40 degrees to the SE. The rupture depth extends from about 0.3 to 1.2 km only. Despite the shallow depth of the mainshock, no surface feature could be correlated with the fault plane. Aeromagnetic data in the epicentral area show short-wavelength lineaments trending NNE-SSW to NE-SW which we interpret as faults and fractures in the craton basement beneath the surface limestone layer. We propose that the Caraibas-Itacarambi seismicity is probably associated with reactivation of these basement fractures and faults under the present E-W compressional stress field in this region of the South American Plate. An efficient method for chemoenzymatic dynamic kinetic resolution of selenium-containing chiral amines (organoselenium-1-phenylethanamines) has been developed, leading to the corresponding amides in excellent enantioselectivities and high isolated yields. This one-pot procedure employs two different types of catalysts: Pd on barium sulphate (Pd/BaSO(4)) as racemization catalyst and lipase (CAL-B) as the resolution catalyst. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. Crude oil has between 0.04 up to 5% of sulphur, the higher the oil the higher the sulphur levels. Sulphur usually gives problems such as corrosion in refinery, and once burnt produces SO2 that goes to atmosphere. This work aim to investigate the capacity of Rhodococcus rhodochrous (NRRL B-2149) to metabolize the model compound 4-methyldibenzotiophene (4-MDBT), to remove the sulphur and transform it in 2-hydroxybiphenyl (2-HBF) and sulphite using the 4S pathway. Kynetic runs were carried out in shaker at 120 rpm and 32°C. Samples were taken every 12h to assay substrate consume as well as cells production using HPLC. Results showed that R. rhodochrous NRRL B-2149 can use the 4S pathway in order to remove sulphur without change the carbon chain of the molecule as well as that cells and 4-MDBT affects the product formation. The production of 2-hydroxybiphenyl has interest for industry once it is a potent biocide. However, evaluation is necessary in order to obtain better results compatible with industry needs

Background and Purpose Bone resorption induced by interleukin-1β (IL-1β) and tumour necrosis factor (TNF-α) is synergistically potentiated by kinins, partially due to enhanced kinin receptor expression. Inflammation-induced bone resorption can be impaired by IL-4 and IL-13. The aim was to investigate if expression of B1 and B2 kinin receptors can be affected by IL-4 and IL-13. Experimental Approach We examined effects in a human osteoblastic cell line (MG-63), primary human gingival fibroblasts and mouse bones by IL-4 and IL-13 on mRNA and protein expression of the B1 and B2 kinin receptors. We also examined the role of STAT6 by RNA interference and using Stat6-/- mice. Key Results IL-4 and IL-13 decreased the mRNA expression of B1 and B2 kinin receptors induced by either IL-1β or TNF-α in MG-63 cells, intact mouse calvarial bones or primary human gingival fibroblasts. The burst of intracellular calcium induced by either bradykinin (B2 agonist) or des-Arg10-Lys-bradykinin (B1 agonist) in gingival fibroblasts pretreated with IL-1β was impaired by IL-4. Similarly, the increased binding of B1 and B2 ligands induced by IL-1β was decreased by IL-4. In calvarial bones from Stat6-deficient mice, and in fibroblasts in which STAT6 was knocked down by siRNA, the effect of IL-4 was decreased. Conclusions and Implications These data show, for the first time, that IL-4 and IL-13 decrease kinin receptors in a STAT6-dependent mechanism, which can be one important mechanism by which these cytokines exert their anti-inflammatory effects and impair bone resorption. © 2013 The Authors. Previous studies revealed the presence of LTC4 synthase in paraventricular vasopressinergic neurons, suggesting a role for leukotrienes (LTs) in certain neuroendocrine system functions. Our aim was to study the effect of an inhibitor of LT synthesis in the release of arginine vasopressin (AVP) following an osmotic stimulus in rats. Male Wistar rats received an intra-cerebroventricular injection of 2 mu l of the LT synthesis inhibitor MK-886 (1, 2, or 4 mu g/kg), or vehicle (DMSO 5%), 1 h before an intraperitoneal injection of hypertonic saline (NaCl 2 M) or isotonic saline (NaCl 0.01 M) in a volume corresponding to 1% of body weight. Thirty minutes after the osmotic stimulus, the animals were decapitated and blood was collected for determining hematocrit, plasma osmolality and plasma AVP levels. As expected, the injection of hypertonic saline significantly increased (P<0.05) the hematocrit, plasma osmolality and plasma AVP levels. While inhibiting LT synthesis by central administration of MK-886 did not cause any additional increase in hematocrit or osmolality, plasma AVP levels were augmented (P<0.05). We conclude that central leukotrienes may have a modulatory role in AVP secretion following an osmotic stimulus, this deserving future studies. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
