This study uses a discrete choice experiment (DCE) to elicit willingness to pay estimates for changes in the water quality of three rivers. As many regions the metropolitan region Berlin-Brandenburg struggles to achieve the objectives of the Water Framework Directive until 2015. A major problem is the high load of nutrients. As the region is part of two states (Länder) and the river sections are common throughout the whole region we account for the spatial context twofold. Firstly, we incorporate the distance between each respondent and all river stretches in all MNL and RPL models, and, secondly, we consider whether respondents reside in the state of Berlin or Brandenburg. The compensating variation (CV) calculated for various scenarios shows that overall people would significantly benefit from improved water quality. The CV measures, however, also reveal that not considering the spatial context would result in severely biased welfare measures. While the distance decay effect lowers CV, state residency is connected to the frequency of status quo choices and not accounting for residency would underestimate possible welfare gains in one state. Another finding is that the extent of the market varies with respect to attributes (river stretches) and attribute levels (water quality levels).

Cone-capillary nozzles with varying cone angles from 10° to 120° and a capillary diameter of 120μ are experimentally investigated for their application in the hydroentanglement process. Cone-up and cone-down configurations in a range of water pressures of 30-120 bar are tested. The effects of the cone angle on flow parameters such as discharge and velocity coefficients and intact length are studied. Flow visualization techniques are used to recognize the flow regimes and characteristics and to inspect and compare the intact length and appearance of the jets. Cone-down nozzles with more consistent flow properties, lower discharges, and higher velocity coefficients are more suitable for the hydroentanglement process. Single-cone nozzles without capillaries and with varying cone angles are also tested. The flow properties of the jets from the single-cone nozzles are compared with the cone-capillary nozzles of the same cone angle to study the effect of the capillary section. The effect of the interaction of adjacent nozzles on the flow from multi-hole nozzles is studied, and the characteristics of the jets from the multi-hole nozzles are compared with the single-hole nozzles.

The power output from a wave energy converter is typically predicted using experimental and/or numerical modelling techniques. In order to yield meaningful results the relevant characteristics of the device, together with those of the wave climate must be modelled with sufficient accuracy.
The wave climate is commonly described using a scatter table of sea states defined according to parameters related to wave height and period. These sea states are traditionally modelled with the spectral distribution of energy defined according to some empirical formulation. Since the response of most wave energy converters vary at different frequencies of excitation, their performance in a particular sea state may be expected to depend on the choice of spectral shape employed rather than simply the spectral parameters. Estimates of energy production may therefore be affected if the spectral distribution of wave energy at the deployment site is not well modelled. Furthermore, validation of the model may be affected by differences between the observed full scale spectral energy distribution and the spectrum used to model it.
This paper investigates the sensitivity of the performance of a bottom hinged flap type wave energy converter to the spectral energy distribution of the incident waves. This is investigated experimentally using a 1:20 scale model of Aquamarine Power’s Oyster wave energy converter, a bottom hinged flap type device situated at the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) in approximately 13m water depth. The performance of the model is tested in sea states defined according to the same wave height and period parameters but adhering to different spectral energy distributions.
The results of these tests show that power capture is reduced with increasing spectral bandwidth. This result is explored with consideration of the spectral response of the device in irregular wave conditions. The implications of this result are discussed in the context of validation of the model against particular prototype data sets and estimation of annual energy production.

Arsenic (As) contamination of rice plants can result in high total As concentrations (t-As) in cooked rice, especially if As-contaminated water is used for cooking. This study examines two variables: (1) the cooking method (water volume and inclusion of a washing step); and (2) the rice type (atab and boiled). Cooking water and raw atab and boiled rice contained 40 g As l-1 and 185 and 315 g As kg-1, respectively. In general, all cooking methods increased t-As from the levels in raw rice; however, raw boiled rice decreased its t-As by 12.7% when cooked by the traditional method, but increased by 15.9% or 23.5% when cooked by the intermediate or contemporary methods, respectively. Based on the best possible scenario (the traditional cooking method leading to the lowest level of contamination, and the atab rice type with the lowest As content), t-As daily intake was estimated to be 328 g, which was twice the tolerable daily intake of 150 g.

Pollution of subterranean water by arsenic (As) in Asia has resulted in the worst chemical disaster in human history. For populations living on subsistence rice diets, As contamination of rice grain contributes greatly to dietary As exposure. The main objectives of this study were to compare two dehusking processes: (a) wet process (soaking of rice, boiling and mechanical hulling) and (b) dry process (mechanical hulling), and recommend the method leading to a lower As content in commercial rice. In general, hulling of paddy rice (373 mu g As kg(-1)) significantly decreased As content in rice grain (311 mu g As kg(-1)). The final As concentrations in boiled rice (final product of the wet process) and atab rice (dry process) were 332 and 290 mu g kg(-1). Thus, the dry method is recommended for dehusking paddy rice if not As-free water is available. However, villagers can reduce the As content in the wet system by discarding the soaking water and using new water for the light boiling. Finally, it is not recommended to use rice husk for feeding animals because the As concentration is very high, approximately 1,000 mu g As kg(-1).

The effect of colloidal nanosilica on the fresh and rheological parameters, plastic shrinkage, heat of hydration, and compressive strength of cement-based grouts is investigated in this paper. The fresh and rheological properties were evaluated by the minislump flow, Marsh cone flow time, Lombardi plate cohesion meter, yield value, and plastic viscosity. The key parameters investigated were the dosages of nanosilica and superplasticizer and temperature of mixing water. Statistical models and isoresponse curves were developed to capture the significant trends. The dosage of nanosilica had a significant effect on the results. The increase in the dosage of nanosilica led to increasing the values of flow time, plate cohesion meter, yield stress, plastic viscosity, heat of hydration at 1 day and 3 days, and compressive strength at 1 day, while reducing the minislump, plastic shrinkage up 24 h, and compressive strength at 3, 7, and 28 days. Conversely, the increase in the dosage of superplasticizer led to decreasing the values of flow time, plate cohesion meter, yield stress, plastic viscosity, heat of hydration at 1 day and 3 days, and compressive strength at 1 day, while increasing the minislump, plastic shrinkage, and compressive strength at 3 and 7 days. Increasing the temperature of mixing water led to a notable increase in the results of minislump, flow time, plastic viscosity, heat of hydration at 3 days, and compressive strength at 1 day, while it reduced the plate cohesion, compressive strength at 3, 7, and 28 days. The statistical models developed in this study can facilitate optimizing the mixture proportions of grouts for target performance by reducing the number of trial batches needed.

The entomopathogenic fungi Beauveria bassiana, Metarhizium anisopliae and Paecilomyces farinosus were cultured on solid agar media containing different carbohydrate components (glycerol, glucose, trehalose or starch) at concentrations of ≤ 142.7 g added carbon 1-1 for 30 d at 25°C. The water activity (a(w)) of the media ranged from 0.925 to 0.998. Growth of M. anisopliae and P. farinosus was stimulated between 0.975 and 0.995 a(w) on glucose media and that of P. farinosus at 0. 975 a(w) on glycerol media. At < 0.970 a(w), growth of each fungal species was significantly reduced (P < 0.05). Polyhydroxy alcohols (polyols) and trehalose were extracted from conidia produced on different media and quantified using HPLC. Total polyol content of conidia produced on glucose media varied between 5.2 and 52.2 mg g-1 for B. bassiana, 77.3 and 90.3 mg g-1 for M. anisopliae, and 26.7 and 76.1 mg g-1 for P. farinosus. The amounts of specific polyols in conidia varied significantly from media of different glucose concentrations. Mannitol was the predominant polyol in conidia of all three species, with conidia of M. anisopliae, for example, containing as much as 75.2 mg mannitol g-1 when cultured on glucose media. The amount of the lower molecular mass polyols glycerol and erythritol was greater in conidia produced on glucose media with > 50.0 g added carbon 1-1 than that in conidia produced at lower glucose concentrations. Conidia contained between 10.8 and 20.8 mg glycerol plus erythritol g-1 on glucose media with 142.7 g added carbon 1-1, depending on species. Conversely, conidia of B. bassiana and P. farinosus contained maximum amounts of trehalose ( ≤ 23.5 mg g-1) when produced on glucose media with < 50.0 g added carbon l-1, and trehalose content was considerably less at higher glucose concentrations. There were accumulations of glycerol and erythritol in conidia of all three species when grown on glycerol media with > 25.0 g added carbon 1-1; conidia of B. bassiana contained up to 154.0 mg glycerol plus erythritol g-1. hen B. bassiana and P. farinosus were grown on trehalose media, conidia contained up to 222.1 mg trehalose g-1. By contrast, conidia of M. anisopliae contained < 17.0 mg trehalose g-1 under all conditions tested. The water availability of solutions of different polyols is discussed in relation to their potential to act in osmotic adjustment during germination. The ability to manipulate polyol and trehalose content of fungal propagules may be critical in enhancing the storage life and efficacy of biological control agents.

Small mixer impeller design is not tailored for granulation because impellers are intended for a wide range of processes. The aim of this research was to evaluate the performances of several impellers to provide guidance on the selection and design for the purposes of granulation. Lactose granules were produced using wet granulation with water as a binder. A Kenwood KM070 mixer was used as a standard apparatus and five impeller designs with different shapes and surface areas were used. The efficacy of granulate formation was measured by adding an optically sensitive tracer to determine variations in active ingredient content across random samples of granules from the same size classes. It was found that impeller design influenced the homogeneity of the granules and therefore can affect final product performance. The variation in active ingredient content across granules of differing size was also investigated. The results show that small granules were more potent than larger granules.

The use of controlled periodic illumination with UV LEDs for enhancing photonic efficiency of photocatalytic decomposition processes in water has been investigated using methyl orange as a model compound. The impact of the length of light and dark time periods (T ON/T OFF times) on photodegradation and photonic efficiency using a UV LED-illuminated photoreactor has been studied. The results have shown an inverse dependency of the photonic efficiency on duty cycle and a very little effect on T ON or T OFF time periods, indicating no effect of rate-limiting steps through mass diffusion or adsorption/desorption in the reaction. For this reactor, the photonic efficiency under controlled periodic illumination (CPI) matches to that of continuous illumination, for the same average UV light intensities. Furthermore, under CPI conditions, the photonic efficiency is inversely related to the average UV light intensity in the reactor, in the millisecond time regime. This is the first study that has investigated the effect of controlled periodic illumination using ultra band gap UV LED light sources in the photocatalytic destruction of dye compounds using titanium dioxide. The results not only enhance the understanding of the effect of periodic illumination on photocatalytic processes but also provide a greater insight to the potential of these light sources in photocatalytic reactions.

This study was carried out to assess the properties of vermiculites from Tanzania with respect to the temperature used to expand them. Vermiculites from five locations in the Mozambique Belt of Tanzania were sampled and heated at 15, 200, 400, 600 and 800 °C in a muffle furnace. Palabora Europe Ltd provided one sample for comparison from their South Africa deposit which provides vermiculite used worldwide as a soil amendment. Water release characteristic, cation exchange capacity, pH, mass loss, and bulk density were among the properties assessed. All six vermiculites responded differently on heating, and had a significant variation in their agronomic properties. Water release characteristic varied with the degree of exfoliation and phase composition. Although vermiculites from Tanzania expanded on heating, their capacity to retain plant available water was relatively low as compared to vermiculite from Palabora. Disintegration on heating and the presence of a high amount of iron could be among the factors affecting their water release characteristic. Loss of hydroxyl water was higher in vermiculites than in hydrobiotites. Dehydroxylation enhanced the availability of exchangeable K+ and reduced significantly the cation exchange capacity of vermiculites. The optimum exchangeable K+ was obtained on heating at a temperature of 600 °C. The pH was unaffected by heating to a temperature of less than 600 °C. At higher temperature, the pH increased in some samples and was accompanied by substantial amounts of exchangeable Mg2+. Thus, it was concluded that initial characterization of vermiculites is essential prior to potential agricultural applications in order to optimize their agronomic potential. © 2008 Elsevier B.V. The miscibility of monoethanolamine (MEA) in five superbase ionic liquids (ILs), namely the trihexyl-tetradecylphosphonium benzotriazolide ([P66614][Bentriz]), trihexyl-tetradecylphosphonium benzimidazolide ([P66614][Benzim]), trihexyl-tetradecylphosphonium 1,2,3-triazolide ([P66614][123Triz]), trihexyl-tetradecylphosphonium 1,2,4-triazolide ([P66614][124Triz]), and trihexyl-tetradecylphosphonium imidazolide ([P66614][Im]) was determined at 295.15 K using 1H NMR spectroscopy. The solubility of carbon dioxide (CO2) in equimolar (IL + MEA) mixtures was then studied experimentally using a gravimetric technique at 295.15 K and 0.1 MPa. The effect of MEA on the CO2 capture ability of these ILs was investigated together with the viscosity of these systems in the presence or absence of CO2 to evaluate their practical application in CO2 capture processes. The effect of the presence of MEA on the rate of CO2 uptake was also studied. The study showed that the MEA can enhance CO2 absorption over the ideal values in the case of [P66614][123Triz] and [P66614][Bentriz] while in the other systems the mixtures behave ideally. A comparison of the effect of MEA addition with the addition of water to these superbase ILs showed that similar trends were observed in each case for the individual ILs studied.

Carbonation and chloride ingress are the two main causes of corrosion in reinforced concrete structures. An investigation to monitor the ingress of chlorides and the effect of carbonation on chloride ingression during an accelerated 12 month cyclic wetting and drying exposure regime that simulates conditions in which multiple mode transport mechanisms are active was conducted on ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS) concrete. The penetration of chloride and carbon dioxide was evaluated using water and acid soluble chloride profiles and phenolphthalein indicator, respectively. The results indicated that when chloride and carbon dioxide ingress concomitantly the effects can be adverse. Carbonation has a detrimental effect on the binding capacity of the concrete, increasing the concentration of free (water soluble) chlorides. This contributed to greater concentration and greater penetration of chlorides and thus an increased corrosion risk.

Strong and sometimes extreme responses in runoff and soil erosion following wildfires have been reported worldwide. However, in the case of North-Central Portugal, little research had been carried out regarding the hydrologic and erosive impacts of several land management activities in recently burnt areas (such as ground preparation, post-fire logging or post-fire mitigation treatments). This study aims to assess post-fire runoff and soil erosion response on Eucalypt and Maritime pine plantations during the first, second and third years following wildfires. The effect of several pre-fire ground preparation operations (ploughed down-slope, contour ploughed and inclined terraces), post-fire logging activities (on both the eucalypt and pine plantations), as well as the application of hydromulch (a post-fire emergency treatment) on overland flow and soil erosion were compared to burnt but undisturbed and untreated areas. The intensive monitoring of runoff, soil erosion and selected soil properties served to determine the main factors involved in post-fire runoff and soil erosion and their spatial and temporal variation. Soil water repellency deserved special attention, due to its supposed important role for overland flow generation. Repeated rainfall simulation experiments (RSE’s), micro-scale runoff plots and bounded sediment fences were carried out and/or installed immediately after the wildfire on seven burnt slopes. Micro-scale runoff plots results under natural rainfall conditions were also compared to the RSE’s results, which was useful for assessing the representativeness of the data obtained with artificial rainfall. The results showed comparable runoff coefficient (20-60%) but lower sediment losses (125-1000 g m-2) than prior studies in Portugal, but especially outside Portugal. Lower sediment losses were related with the historic intensive land use in the area. In evaluating these losses, however, the shallowness and stoniness of the soils, as well as the high organic matter fraction of the eroded sediments (50%) must not be overlooked. Sediment limited erosion was measured in all the ploughed sites, probably due to the time since ploughing (several years). The disturbance of the soil surface cover due to post-fire logging and wood extraction substantially increased sediment losses at both the pine and eucalypt sites. Hydromulch effectiveness in reducing the runoff (70%) and sediment losses (83%) was attributed to the protective high coverage provided by hydromulch. The hydromulch significantly affected the soil cover and other soil properties and these changes also reduced the soil erosion risk. The rainfall amount was the main factor explaining the variance in runoff. However, a shift from rainfall amount to rainfall intensity was detected when either the surface cover or the infiltration capacity (hydrophilic conditions) increased. Sediment losses were controlled by rainfall intensity and surface cover. The role of soil water repellency on runoff generation was not consistent; the overall repellency levels alone were not enough to assess its hydrological impact. Soil water repellency explained runoff generation in the specific-sites model better than in the overall model. Additionally, soil moisture content was a better predictor for soil water repellency than antecedent rainfall. The natural rainfall results confirmed that RSE’s were able to capture the specific sediment losses and its organic matter content as well as the differences between the ploughed and unploughed sites. Repeated RSE’s also captured the seasonal variations in runoff and sediment losses attributed to soil water repellency. These results have implications for post-fire soil erosion modelling and soil conservation practices in the region, or areas with the same land use, climate and soil characteristics. The measured sediment loss, as well as the increasing frequency of ploughing in recently burnt and unburnt eucalypt stands, suggests ploughing is not an effective as a soil conservation measure. Logging activities with less impact are recommended in order to maintain the forest litter protecting the soil surface. Due to its high effectiveness in reducing runoff and soil erosion, hydromulch is recommended for highly sensitive and vulnerable areas.

The aim of this study was to examine the effect of carbohydrate mouth rinse on 30-min arm cranking performance. Twelve healthy, active males (age 21.6, standard deviation (SD)=3.1 years; mass 76.2, SD=12.2 kg) volunteered in a single-blind, randomised crossover design. Firstly they completed an incremental exercise test to exhaustion (VO2max test) on an arm crank (50W for 2 min, increasing by 10W every min). During visit 2 and 3 they arm cranked for maximal distance over 30 min at a resistance equivalent to 50% of their peak power, mouth rinsing for 5 s with either 25 ml of a tasteless 6.4% maltodextrin solution (CHO) or 25 ml of water (placebo) every 6 min. A letter cancellation test was performed pre and post exercise to measure cognitive function. The result showed that cognitive function was not significantly different between trials (P=0.874). There was no significant difference in distance arm cranked between trials (P=0.164) even though 9 out of 12 participants had improved performance on the CHO trial. In conclusion, further research is needed to determine the ergogenic effect of CHO mouth rinsing on upper body exercise performance.
