Dimensional analysis of burden in family caregivers of patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder

Aims: Obsessivecompulsive disorder (OCD) also generates emotional burden in the patient's family members, but no study has evaluated the specific dimensions of burden. The objectives were to evaluate the dimensions of the Zarit Burden Interview (ZBI) and possible correlates. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study involving 47 patients and 47 caregivers, using a sociodemographic questionnaire; the ZBI; the Self Reporting Questionnaire; the Family Accommodation Scale; and the YaleBrown ObsessiveCompulsive Scale. The ZBI factor analysis was conducted using Varimax Rotation. Results: Six factors were identified, explaining 74.2% of the total variance: factor 1, interference in the caregiver's personal life (36.6% of the variance); factor 2, perception of patient's dependence (10.8%); factor 3, feelings of irritation or intolerance (9.2%); factor 4, guilt (7.2%); factor 5, insecurity (5.6%); and factor 6, embarrassment (4.8%). The six ZBI factors were associated with greater OCD severity and with greater accommodation to the patient's symptoms, and factors 1, 2, 5 and 6 with caregiver's psychological morbidity. Caregiver's sex (female) was associated with factors 5 and 6, relationship with the patient (being a parent or son/daughter) with factor 5, higher educational level with factor 6, living with the patient with factor 3, worse self-evaluation of health with factors 1, 5 and 6, and occupational status (not working) with factors 1, 2, 5 and 6. Conclusion: The dimensions of burden identified indicate the most affected aspects of a caregiver's life and could guide the planning of more specific interventions. Thus, the caregiver could participate more effectively in the OCD patient's treatment, with a lower impact on his/her life.

Brane cosmic string compactification in Brans-Dicke theory

We investigate an alternative compactification of extra dimensions using local cosmic string in the Brans-Dicke gravity framework. In the context of dynamical systems it is possible to show that there exist a stable field configuration for the Einstein-Brans-Dicke equations. We explore the analogies between this particular model and the Randall-Sundrum scenario.

From Dirac spinor fields to eigenspinoren des ladungskonjugationsoperators

Dual-helicity eigenspinors of the charge conjugation operator [eigenspinoren des ladungskonjugationsoperators (ELKO) spinor fields] belong-together with Majorana spinor fields-to a wider class of spinor fields, the so-called flagpole spinor fields, corresponding to the class (5), according to Lounesto spinor field classification based on the relations and values taken by their associated bilinear covariants. There exists only six such disjoint classes: the first three corresponding to Dirac spinor fields, and the other three, respectively, corresponding to flagpole, flag-dipole, and Weyl spinor fields. This paper is devoted to investigate and provide the necessary and sufficient conditions to map Dirac spinor fields to ELKO, in order to naturally extend the standard model to spinor fields possessing mass dimension 1. As ELKO is a prime candidate to describe dark matter, an adequate and necessary formalism is introduced and developed here, to better understand the algebraic, geometric, and physical properties of ELKO spinor fields, and their underlying relationship to Dirac spinor fields. Gauss-Codazzi formalism to brane-world within Brans-Dicke theory

We apply the Gauss-Codazzi formalism to brane-worlds within the framework of Brans-Dicke gravity. The compactification is taken from six to five dimensions in order to formalize brane-world models with hybrid compactification in scalar tensor theories.

In this brief reply, we elucidate some missing points in the comment (Khakshournia S 2009 Class. Quantum Grav. 26 178001) on our original paper (Hoff da Silva J M and da Rocha R 2009 Class. Quantum Grav. 26 055007), explicitly showing that the comment is unfounded in this context. We show that the term proposed equals zero, since the brane discontinuity is correctly defined in the torsion.

ELKO SPINOR FIELDS: LAGRANGIANS FOR GRAVITY DERIVED FROM SUPERGRAVITY

FROM DIRAC ACTION TO ELKO ACTION

A fundamental action, representing a mass dimension-transmuting operator between Dirac and ELKO spinor fields, is performed on the Dirac Lagrangian, in order to lead it into the ELKO Lagrangian. Such a dynamical transformation can be seen as a natural extension of the Standard Model that incorporates dark matter fields. The action of the mass dimension-transmuting operator on a Dirac spinor field, that de fines and introduces such a mapping, is shown to be a composition of the Dirac operator and the nonunitary transformation that maps Dirac spinor fields into ELKO spinor fields, de fined in J. Math. Phys. 4 8, 123517 (2007). This paper gives allowance for ELKO, as a candidate to describe dark matter, to be incorporated in the Standard Model. It is intended to present for the first time, up to our knowledge, the dynamical character of a mapping between Dirac and ELKO spinor fields, transmuting the mass dimension of spin one-half fermionic fields from 3/2 to 1 and from 1 to 3/2.
