This paper reports on the design and development of an Android-based context-aware system to support Erasmus students during their mobility in Porto. It enables: (i) guest users to create, rate and store personal points of interest (POI) in a private, local on board database; and (ii) authenticated users to upload and share POI as well as get and rate recommended POI from the shared central database. The system is a distributed client / server application. The server interacts with a central database that maintains the user profiles and the shared POI organized by category and rating. The Android GUI application works both as a standalone application and as a client module. In standalone mode, guest users have access to generic info, a map-based interface and a local database to store and retrieve personal POI. Upon successful authentication, users can, additionally, share POI as well as get and rate recommendations sorted by category, rating and distance-to-user.

This paper presents the system developed to promote the rational use of electric energy among consumers and, thus, increase the energy efficiency. The goal is to provide energy consumers with an application that displays the energy consumption/production profiles, sets up consuming ceilings, defines automatic alerts and alarms, compares anonymously consumers with identical energy usage profiles by region and predicts, in the case of non-residential installations, the expected consumption/production values. The resulting distributed system is organized in two main blocks: front-end and back-end. The front-end includes user interface applications for Android mobile devices and Web browsers. The back-end provides data storage and processing functionalities and is installed in a cloud computing platform - the Google App Engine - which provides a standard Web service interface. This option ensures interoperability, scalability and robustness to the system.

The current capabilities of mobile phones in terms of communication, processing and storage, enables its use to form autonomous networks of devices that can be used in case of collapse or inexistent support from a communication infrastructure. In this paper, we propose a network configuration of nodes that provides high-speed bidirectional device-to-device communication, with symmetrical data transfer rates, in Wi-Fi Direct multi-group scenarios, without using performance hindering broadcasts. The rapidly increasing computing power, available storage and communication capabilities of mobile devices makes it possible to start processing and storing data locally, rather than offloading it to remote servers; allowing scenarios of mobile clouds without infrastructure dependency. We can now aim at connecting neighboring mobile devices, creating a local mobile cloud that provides storage and computing services on local generated data. In this paper, we describe an early overview of a distributed mobile system that allows accessing and processing of data distributed across mobile devices without an external communication infrastructure. Technology is present in almost every simple aspect of the peoples daily life. As an instance, let us refer to the smartphone. This device is usually equipped with a GPS modulewhich may be used as an orientation system, if it carries the right functionalities. The problem is that these applications may be complex to operate and may not be within the bounds of everybody. Therefore, the main goal here is to develop an orientation system that may help people with cognitive disabilities in their day-to-day journeys, when the caregivers are absent. On the other hand, to keep paid helpers aware of the current location of the disable people, it will be also considered a localization system. Knowing their current locations, caregiversmay engage in others activities without neglecting their prime work, and, at the same time, turning people with cognitive disabilities more independent.

Develop a client-server application for a mobile environment can bring many challenges because of the mobile devices limitations. So, in this paper is discussed what can be the more reliable way to exchange information between a server and an Android mobile application, since it is important for users to have an application that really works in a responsive way and preferably without any errors. In this discussion two data transfer protocols (Socket and HTTP) and three serialization data formats (XML, JSON and Protocol Buffers) were tested using some metrics to evaluate which is the most practical and fast to use.

Os dispositivos mveis so pessoais, intransmissveis e cada vez mais utilizados, tornando-se assim numa boa ferramenta para a realizao de um conjunto de servios na indstria hoteleira. Entre esses servios que necessitam da identificao pessoal, encontram-se a possibilidade do cliente reservar um quarto ou utilizar o servio de quartos. Atualmente muito utilizado, nos locais de alojamento, um smart card que possibilite ao cliente ter acesso a alguns dos servios disponveis. O objetivo deste documento apresentar uma alternativa ao sistema de cartes, utilizando para o efeito, dispositivos mveis. De modo a garantir a segurana e uma utilizao semelhante ao sistema de cartes existentes foi utilizada a tecnologia NFC (Near Field Communication) que, ao permitir o modo de emulao de carto, facilita a transao do sistema de smart card existente, para o da utilizao de dispositivos mveis na realizao das mesmas funes. Mais concretamente, ser abordada a utilizao de smartphones para o processo de abertura de portas. Para que exista uma melhor compreenso e para que haja um conhecimento das suas capacidades e limites foram estudados casos de uso da tecnologia NFC. Este documento apresenta ainda os processos de desenvolvimento de uma aplicao nativa para o sistema operativo Android, cujo objetivo proporcionar ao cliente de um local de alojamento um novo modo de acesso ao quarto, utilizando a tecnologia NFC. Para alm desta funcionalidade a aplicao permite ainda ao utilizador fazer reservas, fazer o check-in, fazer o check-out entre outras. Posteriormente sero apresentadas as concluses e possveis trabalhos futuros.
