An inherently disorganized self-assembled monolayer (SAM) of 2-mercapto-3-n-octylthiophene (MOT) has been formed on a gold bead electrode from its dilute ethanolic solution. The disorganization of the monolayer is attributed to the loose packing of the aliphatic chains of the MOT adsorbates, which results from a large difference in dimension/or cross-sectional area between the head (thiophene thiolate) and the tail (alkane chain) groups. Electrochemical measurements including ac impedance spectroscopy and metal underpotential deposition have shown that the monolayer is almost pinhole free. However, the MOT SAM can be penetrated by an organic probe molecule with affinity for the alkane chain part of the monolayer. Some typical probe molecules with different size and hydrophilicity have been employed to assess the permselectivity of the monolayer. Measurement results demonstrate that the ability of the employed probe molecules to penetrate into the monoalyer is mainly dominated by their hydrophilicity/or hydrophobicity. The results presented here suggest the potential application of MOT monoalyer to effectively modify the electrode surface for several research areas such as electrochemical sensors, electrocatalysis, electroanalysis, and supported hybrid bilayer membranes.

A nanoparticulate ferric oxide-copper tris(2,4-di-tert-amylphenoxy)-8-quinolinolylphthalocyanine hybrid ultrathin film was constructed from alternate layers by the Langmuir-Blodgett technique. The composition, morphology and structure of the film were studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), transmission electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, small-angle X-ray diffraction, visible spectroscopy and polarized UV-Vis spectroscopy. All the above analyses suggest that the thin film is a kind of one-dimensional superlattice, composed of organic and inorganic components. The XPS data reveal that the nanoparticulate ferric oxide exists as an alpha-Fe2O3 phase in the films. Gas-sensing measurements show that the hybrid LB film has very fast response-recovery characteristics towards 2 ppm C2H5OH vapor.

An amperometric biosensor for monitoring phenols in the organic phase was constructed by the silica sol-gel immobilization of tyrosinase on a glassy carbon electrode. The organic-inorganic hybrid materials with different sol-gel precursors and polymers were optimized, and the experimental conditions, such as the effect of the solvent, operational potential and enzyme loading were explored for the optimum analytical performance of the enzyme electrode. The biosensor can reach 95% of steady-state current in about 18 s, and the trend in the sensitivity of different phenols is as follows: catechol > phenol >p-cresol. In addition, the apparent Michaelis-Menten constants (K-m(app)) and the stability of the enzyme electrode were discussed. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science S.A. All rights reserved.

The responses of a cryohydrogel tyrosinase enzyme electrode to four substrates in three pure water immiscible organic solvents were investigated. Kinetic parameters, the maximum kinetic current, I-max, the apparent Michaelis-Menten constant, K-m(app), and I-max/K-m(app), were calculated. The I-max/K-m(app) value was taken as an indicator of the catalytic efficiency of the sensor. The effect of the substrate hydrophobicity on I-max/K-m(app) and response time of the sensor were discussed. The effects of both hydrophobicity (log P) and dielectric constant (epsilon) of the organic solvent on the catalytic efficiency of the enzyme in the organic phase were studied. A dimethylformamide-polyhydroxyl cellulose organo-hydrogel has been prepared, and its applications for enzyme immobilization in construction of organic phase biosensors have been exploited. With horseradish peroxidase, tyrosinase, and bilirubin oxidase immobilized in the organohydrogel, enzyme electrodes can be operated in various situations, including aqueous buffer, oil/water mixtures, and anhydrous organic solvents, and even in dimethylformamide, to determine analytes of different solubilities, e.g., organic peroxides, phenolic compounds and bilirubin. Biosensing has no restrictions in terms of measuring media and solubilities of analytes.

The determination of benzoic acid, thiourea and 2-mercaptoethanol in three pure organic solvents, viz., chloroform, chlorobenzene and 1,2-dichlorobenzene, by using an amperometric cryohydrogel tyrosinase biosensor is described. Measurements were carried out with phenol as the enzyme substrate. Kinetic parameters (K-i and I-50) were determined in the three solvents for various inhibitors. The sensor showed the most sensitive measurements to these inhibitors in pure chloroform. The solvent-induced deviation of the biosensor to thiourea was evaluated by means of Hill coefficients. The smallest deviation as observed in 1,2-dichlorobenzene, owing to the high hydrophobicity of this solvent. The nature of the inhibition process and its reversibility mere also examined.

In chemical ionization mass spectrometry (CIMS) gas phase C-60(+) or C-60 can react with fragment ions from three chloromethane and four multichloroethane molecular ions via ion-molecule reactions. A dozen of gas-phase adduct ions of C-60 are observed, and most of them contain chlorine atoms. The results of the comparison and analysis show that the relative intensities of adductions are not directly proportional to the corresponding fragment ions in the MS of reagents, which implies that some fragment ions containing radicals are more reactive with C-60(+) or C-60. This indicates that the alkene-like C-60(+) or C-60 can act as a radical sponge in addition reactions.

A novel immobilization method for construction of a tyrosinase-based biosensor applied in pure organic phase is described. This method gives the enzyme a hydrated shell which allows the enzyme to maintain its biocatalytic activity in a pure organic solvent The enzyme electrode was used to determine several phenols and o-diphenols in pure chloroform and chlorobenzene. The biosensor can be stored in dry state for more than 3 months without any loss of the activity. The kinetic parameters have also been calculated and are presented herein.

The contour lithography method [1] is used to improve the fabrication yield of previously demonstrated [2] microfluidic Fabry-Perot (FP) refractive index (RI) sensors. The sensors are then coated with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) based polymers to detect vapor analytes by solid-phase microextraction (SPME). Preliminary characterization of devices coated with two different polymers and exposed to xylenes vapors yields a maximum sensitivity of 0.015 nm/ppm and a detection limit below 120 ppm.

Ionic liquids are organic salts with low melting points. Many of these compounds are liquid at room temperature in their pure state. Since they have negligible vapor pressure and would not contribute to air pollution, they are being intensively investigated for a variety of applications, including as solvents for reactions and separations, as non-volatile electrolytes, and as heat transfer fluids. We present melting temperatures, glass transition temperatures, decomposition temperatures, heat capacities, and viscosities for a large series of pyridinium-based ionic liquids. For comparison, we include data for several imidazolium and quaternary ammonium salts. Many of the compounds do not crystallize, but form glasses at temperatures between 188 K and 223 K. The thermal stability is largely determined by the coordinating ability of the anion, with ionic liquids made with the least coordinating anions, like bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide, having the best thermal stability. In particular, dimethylaminopyridinium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide salts have some of the best thermal stabilities of any ionic liquid compounds investigated to date. Heat capacities increase approximately linearly with increasing molar mass, which corresponds with increasing numbers of translational, vibrational, and rotational modes. Viscosities generally increase with increasing number and length of alkyl substituents on the cation, with the pyridinium salts typically being slightly more viscous than the equivalent imidazolium compounds. The gas-phase reactions of ozone with unsaturated hydrocarbons are significant sources of free radical species (including (OH)-O-center dot) and particulate material in the Earth's atmosphere. In this tutorial review, the kinetics, products and mechanisms of these reactions are examined, starting with a discussion of the original mechanism proposed by Criegee and following with a summary presentation of the complex, free radical-mediated reactions of carbonyl oxide (Criegee) intermediates. The contribution of ozone-terpene reactions to the atmospheric burden of secondary organic aerosol material is also discussed from the viewpoint of the formation of non-volatile organic acid products from the complex chemistry of ozone with alpha-pinene. Throughout the article, currently accepted understanding is supported through the presentation of key experimental results, and areas of persistent or new uncertainty are highlighted.
