Gross anatomy of muscle and sensory/motor innervation of adult and intramolluscan developmental stages of Echinostoma caproni have been investigated to ascertain the organisation and the functional correlates of any stage-specific patterns of staining. Using indirect immunocytochemistry to demonstrate neuroactive substances and the phalloidin-fluorescence technique for staining myofibril F-actin, the muscle systems and aminergic and peptidergic innervation of daughter rediae, cercariae, metacercariae, and pre- and post-ovigerous adults were examined and compared using confocal scanning laser microscopy. A complex arrangement of specific muscle fibre systems occurs within the body wall (composed of circular, longitudinal and diagonal fibres), suckers (radial, equatorial, meridional), pharynx (radial, circular), gut caeca (mainly circular), cercarial tail (circular, pseudo-striated longitudinal), and ducts of the reproductive system (circular, longitudinal), presumed to serve locomotor, adhesive, alimentary and reproductive functions. Immunostaining for serotonin (5-HT) and FMRFamide-related peptides (FaRPs) was evident throughout the central (CNS) and peripheral (PNS) nervous systems of all stages, and use of dual-labelling techniques demonstrated separate neuronal pathways for 5-HT and FaRP in both CNS and PNS. FaRP expression in the innervation of the ootype wall was demonstrated only in post-ovigerous worms and not in pre-ovigerous worms, suggesting an involvement of FaRP neuropeptides in the process of egg assembly. Comparison of the present findings with those recorded for other digeneans suggests that muscle organisation and innervation patterns in trematodes are highly conserved.

The electronic and bonding properties of nitrogenated carbon nanotubes (N-CNTs) exposed to chlorine plasma were investigated using C and N K-edge x-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) and scanning photoelectron microscopy (SPEM). The C and N K-edge XANES spectra of chlorine-treated N-CNTs consistently reveal the formation of pyridinelike N-CNTs by the observation of 1s ->pi(*)(e(2u)) antibonding and 1s ->pi(*)(b(2g)) bonding states. The valence-band photoemission spectra obtained from SPEM images indicate that chlorination of the nanotubes enhances the C-N bonding. First-principles calculations of the partial densities of states in conjunction with C K-edge XANES data identify the presence of C-Cl bonding in chlorine treated N-CNTs. Gold is the optimal tip metal for light emission in scanning tunnelling microscopy (LESTM) under ambient conditions. Sharp Au-tips of similar to 10nm radius were produced reliably using a safe, two-step etching method in 20% (w/w) CaCl2 solution. Previous CaCl2-based methods have tended to produce blunter tips, while other etching techniques that do produce sharp Au-tips, do so with the use of toxic or hazardous electrolytes. The tips are characterised using scanning electron microscopy and their efficacy in LESTM is evidenced by high-resolution, simultaneous topographic and photon mapping of Au(1 1 1)- and polycrystalline Au-surfaces. Spectra of the optical emission exhibit only one or two peaks with etched tips in contrast to the more complex spectra typical of cut tips; this feature, together with the highly symmetric geometry of the tips, facilitates a definitive analysis of the light emission process. This article compares and contrasts information
obtained, using transmission electron microscopy (TEM)
and piezo-force microscopy (PFM), on domain configurations
adopted in single crystal lamellae of BaTiO3, that had
been cut directly from bulk using a focused ion beam
microscope with top and bottom surfaces parallel to
{100}pseudocubic. Both forms of imaging reveal domain
walls parallel to {110}pseudocubic, consistent with sets of 90
domains with dipoles oriented parallel to the two
\001[pseudocubic directions in the plane of the lamellae.
However, the domain width was observed to be dramatically
larger using PFM than it was using TEM. This suggests
significant differences in the surface energy densities
that drive the domain formation in the first place, that could
relate to differences in the boundary conditions in the two
modes of imaging (TEM samples are imaged under high
vacuum, whereas PFM imaging was performed in air).
Attempts were made to map local dipole orientations
directly, using a form of ‘vector’ PFM. However, information
inferred was largely inconsistent with the known
crystallography of the samples, raising concern about the
levels of care needed for accurate interpretation of PFM
images.
