First demonstration of a working dynamically configurable architecture for wireless IP networks. The programmable architecture was as result of a European collaboration between Industry and University and was applied to a range of IP wireless networks. The work laid the foundations for subsequent research initiatives (including the UK) into programmable wireless networks as well as influencing future wireless standards (e.g. ITU-T).EU project WINE (Wireless Internet NEtworking), -1999-10028.

This letter exposed a serious unfairness problem with IEEE 802.11 MAC based Mobile Ad-hoc Networks (MANETs) when operating TCP connections, and identifies the three common factors that contribute to this problem. The work initiated the development of a programmable wireless framework that is subsequently used in a spin-out company (TOM), and by the Telecoms Technology Testing centre in Taiwan(Dr D Chieng).

The paper describes the design and analysis of a packet scheduler intended to operate over wireless channels with spatially selective error bursts. A particularly innovative aspect in the design is the optimization of the scheduler algorithm to minimize the worst-case fairness index (WFI) for real-time IP traffic.

The main purpose of this paper is to analyze Hannah Arendt’s citizenship proposal. The central thesis is that this proposal is possible in contemporary democracies, and it is adequate for developing and strengthening of political action. The work is divided in five sections. In the first, we develop a brief introduction on the studied issue. In the second and third section, we analyze, respec-tively, political and moral conditions that enable democratic citizenship, and the conditions that hinder the exercise of the same, according to Arendt. Then, we reflect critically on Arendt’s citizenship proposal. Finally, we conclude and we propose a set of civic challenges relate to current democracies in light of the above proposal.

The aim of this paper is to recognize the images that prospective elementary school teachers have about citizenship and citizenship education in school. The qualitative methodology with an ethnographic approach is used for that deep interview of ethnographic kind and analysis of institutional documents, for example, curricula, course syllabus and graduated profi le. The revision of documents helps to a better understanding of discourses. The analysis of the corpus obtained after the application of the paradigm of codifi cation proposed in the established theory. As the principal fi ndings we way point out that the concept of citizens that is common among prospective elementary school teachers is reduced to the school environment because they consider that the promotion of citizenship helps to the incorporation of children to society, thus reproducing a propaedeutic view of education.
