Successful embolization of a delayed splenic rupture following trauma in a child.

Delayed rupture of the spleen following trauma is an exceedingly rare phenomenon in children. In the case we have experienced, arterial embolization was successfully performed, surgery was avoided, and functional splenic tissue was preserved. Embolization is of value in the management of blunt splenic injuries in hemodynamically stable children, even after delayed rupture. The exact criteria for its use remain to be established.

Os autores descrevem um nódulo tireoidiano com padrões ultrassonográfico e citopatológico benignos que diminuiu mais de 50% em três anos e se modificou durante a gestação, constatando-se que era carcinoma papilífero. Conclui-se que a gestação pode aumentar o risco de malignização ou acelerar o crescimento de nódulo tireoidiano maligno preexistente, corroborando dados da literatura.

Étude de faisabilité pour une mesure fiable de la mobilité après fracture du membre inférieur chez l'enfant

Introduction : Les fractures du membre inférieur (MI) de l'enfant traitées par immobilisation plâtrée engendrent une modification significative de la mobilité exacerbée en cas d'obésité. L'accéléromètre est un outil d'évaluation du degré d'activité physique (AP) de l'enfant scientifiquement validé. Il n'a jamais fait l'objet d'étude chez un enfant ayant souffert d'une fracture du MI. Le but de ce travail était d'identifier les problèmes dans l'utilisation d'un accéléromètre comme moyen de mesure de l'AP après fracture nécessitant une décharge du MI. Une adaptation de la réhabilitation post-traumatique en fonction du BMI pourrait alors être proposée. Méthode : Identification d'enfants âgés de 8 et 15 ans, victimes d'une fracture du membre inférieur, consultant aux urgences de l'Hôpital de l'Enfance d'octobre 2013 à mai 2014 et nécessitant une décharge post-traumatique. Etaient exclus les enfants polytraumatisés ou souffrants d'un déficit mental. Données pré-requises des patients: âge, poids, taille, sexe, mécanisme de l'accident, type de fracture et traitement. Proposition de port d'un Actiwatch® Spectrum au poignet et cheville pour la période de remobilisation en décharge. Identification des avantages et problèmes liés à l'usage de l'appareil durant les premiers 30 jours de la période de réhabilitation. Importance : L'absence totale d'étude sur la mobilité post-fracture, la complexité des problèmes liés à la marche en décharge, les contraintes de l'immobilisation plâtrée et la prévalence grandissante de l'obésité pédiatrique justifient la recherche d'un moyen fiable pour quantifier la mobilité d'un enfant en décharge après traumatisme du MI. Résultats : Sur 43 fractures du MI traitées à l'HEL durant la période de l'étude, 13 enfants identifiés, dont 1 exclu pour maladie psychiatrique, 1 refus de participation, 2 transferts immédiats, 2 non inclus pour causes pratiques. Sept garçons âgés de 11 à 16 ans ont accepté le port de l'Actiwatch® pour une durée variant entre 7 et 27 jours (moyenne 15). Nombre d'activités (NA) médians de 5 enfants: 171,79 ±105,37 [cpm]* à J1 et 219,48 ±145,52 [cpm] à J5. NA totales médianes sur 24h : 114'072±44'791 [cpm] à J1 et 234'452 ±134'775 [cpm] à J5. Une dynamique de regain de mobilité est mise en évidence avec intensités maximales et minimales du nombre d'activités pour chacun. La médiane du temps de sommeil des 5 enfants était de 716± 45,5 [mn]. Les problèmes rencontrés ont été d'ordre mécanique (Un Actiwatch® fut défectueux), d'ordre pratique (un perdu et rendu tardivement, un port intermittent, une réaction allergique au bracelet à 4j de port). Conclusions La compliance à l'utilisation de l'Actiwatch® sur toute la durée de la décharge n'était pas optimale. La mobilité moyenne des enfants était objectivable de par leur dynamique, leur intensité maximale et minimale et comparables vis-à-vis de certaines études. Une différence avec les sujets en surpoids est observable. La durée de sommeil de chaque enfant suggère que l'antalgie administrée en cours de traitement est suffisante. Utiliser ce capteur de manière prolongée et sur un grand collectif d'enfants serait un moyen fiable et simple d'objectiver la dynamique de reprise de l'activité physique chez ces patients. Produção de poli(3-hidroxibutirato) por Cupriavidus Necator em meio hidrolisado de amido de arroz com suplementação de óleo de soja em diferentes temperaturas

Poly (3-hydroxybutyrate) (P(3HB)) is a biopolymer, completely biodegradable, which has similar properties to fuel-based polymers. However to make it economically competitive it is necessary the study of cheap sources of substrate. The influence of hydrolyzed rice starch supplemented with soybean oil at different temperatures (30, 35 and 40 °C) was studied in the production of P(3HB) by C. necator. The percentage of P(3HB) produced in the cultures at 30, 35 °C was 30, 39% and 35, 43% without and with supplementation of oil, respectively. The culture at 40 °C showed no production phase due to a possible oxygen limitation. These results demonstrate that hydrolyzed rice starch supplemented with soybean oil increases the yield of P(3HB) and temperature of 35 ºC is the most favorable for biopolymer production.

ABOVEGROUND AND BELOWGROUND BIOMASS AND CARBON ESTIMATES FOR CLONAL EUCALYPTUS TREES IN SOUTHEAST BRAZIL

Eucalyptus plantations represent a short term and cost efficient alternative for sequestrating carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Despite the known potential of forest plantations of fast growing species to store carbon in the biomass, there are relatively few studies including precise estimates of the amount of carbon in these plantations. In this study it was determined the carbon content in the stems, branches, leaves and roots of a clonal Eucalyptus grandis plantation in the Southeast of Brazil. We developed allometric equations to estimate the total amount of carbon and total biomass, and produced an estimate of the carbon stock in the stand level. Altogether, 23 sample trees were selected for aboveground biomass assessment. The roots of 9 of the 23 sampled trees were partially excavated to assess the belowground biomass at a singletree level. Two models with DBH, H and DBH2H were tested. The average relative share of carbon content in the stem, branch, leaf and root compartments was 44.6%, 43.0%, 46.1% and 37.8%, respectively, which is smaller than the generic value commonly used (50%). The best-fit allometric equations to estimate the total amount of carbon and total biomass had DBH2H as independent variable. The root-to-shoot ratio was relatively stable (C.V. = 27.5%) probably because the sub-sample was composed of clones. Total stand carbon stock in the Eucalyptus plantation was estimated to be 73.38 MgC ha-1, which is within the carbon stock range for Eucalyptus plantations.

Dermatite alérgica sazonal em ovinos deslanados no nordeste do Brasil

Dermatite alérgica sazonal foi diagnosticada em um rebanho de 40 ovinos da raça Santa Inês no município de Jucurutú, Estado de Rio Grande do Norte. Para o estudo epidemiológico e observação dos sinais clínicos a propriedade foi visitada periodicamente entre 2007 e 2010. Os ovinos eram criados extensivamente em campo nativo cortado pelo rio Piranhas e com um açude permanente. Entre 2007 e 2009 adoeceram 13 (32,5%) ovinos de um total de 40. As lesões eram observadas durante a época da chuva e regrediam total ou parcialmente durante a seca, reaparecendo no próximo período chuvoso. Os animais que foram retirados da área se recuperaram. No final de 2009 foram eliminados os animais susceptíveis e três novos casos apareceram em 2010. A pele apresentava lesões alopécicas, crostosas, enrugadas, esbranquiçadas e com intenso prurido, localizados na região da cabeça (orelhas, ao redor dos olhos e região frontal), região dorsal do corpo e garupa. Histologicamente, a epiderme apresentou hiperqueratose, acantose, hipergranulose e moderada espongiose. Na derme havia infiltrado inflamatório, principalmente perivascular, composto por eosinófilos, macrófagos e plasmócitos. Observou-se queratose de folículos pilosos e dilatação das glândulas sudoríparas. No hemograma, os valores de todos os animais estavam dentro dos valores normais. Em abril e junho de 2010 foram realizadas capturas de insetos com armadilhas luminosas CDC, sendo 110 dípteros capturados, dos quais 43 foram identificados como Culicoides insignis Lutz. Considerando que esta espécie tem sido associada à dermatite alérgica em outras regiões conclui-se que a doença é uma dermatite alérgica sazonal associada à picada de C. insignis.

Levantamento qualitativo de gêneros de parasitos em amostras fecais de jacarés criados comercialmente em sistema fechado no estado do Rio de Janeiro

O objetivo desta pesquisa foi realizar um diagnóstico qualitativo dos gêneros de parasitos encontrados em amostras fecais ambientais de jacarés (Caiman latirostris Daudin, 1802), criados comercialmente em sistema fechado, no período de 2008 a 2009, no estado do Rio de Janeiro. Um total de 300 amostras foi coletado de 150 filhotes, 80 de animais de engorda e 70 de reprodução, e submetido a análises coproparasitológicas, de flutuação (método de Willis-Mollay) e sedimentação simples (método de Lutz), de acordo com Hoffmann (1987). As amostras foram visualizadas à luz da microscopia óptica. Os resultados obtidos evidenciaram a presença de oocistos de Eimeria e Isospora, cistos de Balantidium e ovos de Acanthostomum e Dujardinascaris.

Gastrointestinal parasites of swine raised in different management systems in the State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Abstract: From 2012 to 2013 were surveyed gastrointestinal parasites from pig farms located in different municpaliyies in the state of Rio de Janeiro. Fecal samples from 790 pigs were collected from the rectum on 88 family farms and 702 farms with industrial production. The samples were subjected to Faust et al., Sheather, Ritchie, Lutz and direct examination faecal techniques. The estimated parasite prevalence was 93.1% in family farms and 59.1% in industrial farms. Balantidium coli, coccidia and Entamoeba sp. were the parasites with the highest frequencies, and the male and female reproductive categories and fatteners pigs the most infected (p<0.05). Trophozoites of B. coli were most evident in stool samples from semi-solid followed by solid and diarrheal consistencies. Strongyles eggs and Trichuris suis have been detected exclusively in family farms. Ascaris suum eggs and Strongyloides ransomi showed low frequency. The high degree of parasitism, especially protozoa, indicates the need to reassess the management of pigs in both types of production.

“Ich habe gedacht, ich bin ihresgleichen und dann war ich immer ganz jemand anderes” : das Leben von Pfarrfrauen in der hannoverschen Landeskirche bis Anfang der 1970er Jahre im Licht sozialtechnischer Modernisierung

De protestantiska prästernas hustrur, prästfruarna, inom Landeskirche Hannover utgör en liten grupp konfessionellt bundna och troende kvinnor som jag undersökt ur kvinnohistoriskt och kulturvetenskapligt perspektiv. Jag belyser förändringarna i synen på prästgård, prästfruns värv och församling under mitten av 1900-talet då prästfruarna förlorade sin ställning i samhälle och församling. Prästfruarna framstår som vittnen över slutet på en epok som började med reformationen och som visat sig vara grundläggande för utformningen av moderniteten liksom också för övergången till senmoderna makt- och socialtekniker som lett till dagens emancipatoriska krav på självförverkligande med jaget som expert. Förändringarna ledde till kvinnopolitiska segrar, som bättre tillgång till arbetsmarknaden, men också till en hittills inte undersökt tragisk sida av denna modernisering, nämligen hur det självständiga handlingsutrymme försvann som prästfruarna hade i prästgård och församling just som kvinnor. Den protestantiska kyrkan bidrog så till en revolutionerande strukturomvandling för att referera till historikerna Lutz Raphael och Anselm Doering-Manteuffel.
