The durability of carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) strengthened steel circular hollow section (CHS) members has now become a real challenge to researchers. In addition, various parameters that may affect the durability of such members have not been revealed yet. This paper presents brief experimental results and the first finite element (FE) approach of CFRP strengthened steel CHS beams conditioned in simulated sea water, along with an accelerated corrosion environment at ambient (24 OC ± 4 OC) and 50 OC temperatures. The beams were loaded to failure under four-point bending. It was found that the strength and stiffness reduced significantly after conditioning in an accelerated corrosion environment. Numerical simulation is implemented using the ABAQUS static general approach. A cohesive element was utilised to model the interface element and an 8-node quadrilateral in-plane general-purpose continuum shell was used to model CFRP elements. A mixed mode cohesive law was deployed for all the three components of stresses in the proposed FE approach, which were one normal component and two shear components. The validity of the FE models was ascertained by comparing the ultimate load and load vs deflection response from experimental results. A range of parametric studies were conducted to investigate the effects of bond length, adhesive types, thickness and diameter of tubes. The results of parametric studies indicated that the adhesive with high tensile modulus performed better and durability design factors varied from section to section.

Ruthenium dioxide is deposited on stainless steel (SS) substrate by galvanostatic oxidation of Ru3+. At high current densities employed for this purpose, there is oxidation of water to oxygen, which occurs in parallel with Ru3+ oxidation. The oxygen evolution consumes a major portion of the charge. The oxygen evolution generates a high porosity to RuO2 films, which is evident from scanning electron microscopy studies. RuO2 is identified by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Cyclic voltammetry and galvanostatic charge–discharge cycling studies indicate that RuO2/SS electrodes possess good capacitance properties. Specific capacitance of 276 F g−1 is obtained at current densities as high as 20 mA cm−2 (13.33 A g−1). Porous nature of RuO2 facilitates passing of high currents during charge–discharge cycling. RuO2/SS electrodes are thus useful for high power supercapacitor applications.

Small additions of Cu to the SUS 304H, a high temperature austenitic stainless steel, enhance its high temperature strength and creep resistance. As Cu is known to cause embrittlement, the effect of Cu on room temperature mechanical properties that include fracture toughness and fatigue crack threshold of as-solutionized SUS 304H steel were investigated in this work. Experimental results show a linear reduction in yield and ultimate strengths with Cu addition of up to 5 wt.% while ductility drops markedly for 5 wt.% Cu alloy. However, the fracture toughness and the threshold stress intensity factor range for fatigue crack initiation were found to be nearly invariant with Cu addition. This is because the fracture in this alloy is controlled by the debonding from the matrix of chromium carbide precipitates, as evident from fractography. Cu, on the other hand, remains either in solution or as nano-precipitates and hence does not influence the fracture characteristics. It is concluded that small additions of Cu to 304H will not have adverse effects on its fracture and fatigue behavior. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Several methods are available for predicting flexural strength of steel fiber concrete composites. In these methods, direct tensile strength, split cylinder strength, and cube strength are the basic engineering parameters that must be determined to predict the flexural strength of such composites. Various simplified forms of stress distribution are used in each method to formulate the prediction equations for flexural strength. In this paper, existing methods are reviewed and compared, and a modified empirical approach is developed to predict the flexural strength of fiber concrete composites. The direct tensile strength of the composite is used as the basic parameter in this approach. Stress distribution is established from the findings of flexural tests conducted as part of this investigation on fiber concrete prisms. A comparative study of the test values of an earlier investigation on fiber concrete slabs and the computed values from existing methods, including the one proposed, is presented.

Redox supercapacitors using polyaniline (PANI) coated. stainless-steel (SS) electrodes have been assembled and characterized. PANI has been deposited on SS substrate by a potentiodynamic method from an acidic electrolyte which contains aniline monomer. By employing stacks of electrodes, each with a geometrical area of 24 cm(2), in acidic perchlorate electrolyte, a capacitance value of about 450 F has been obtained over a long cycle-life. Characterization studies have been carried out by galvanostatic charge-discharge cycling of the capacitors singly, as well as in series and parallel configurations. Various electrical parameters have been evaluated. Use of the capacitors in parallel with a battery for pulse-power loads. and also working of a toy fan connected to the charged capacitors have been demonstrated. A specific capacitance value of about 1300 F g(-1) of PANI has been obtained at a discharge power of about 0.5 kW kg(-1). This value is several times higher than those reported in the literature for PANI and is, perhaps, the highest value known for a capacitor material. The inexpensive SS substrate and the high-capacitance PANI are favorable factors for commercial exploitation. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Polyaniline (PANI) has been studied as an active material for electrochemical capacitors. Polymerization of aniline to PANI has been carried out potentiodynamically on a stainless steel (SS) substrate, instead of Pt-based substrates generally employed for this application. The PANI/SS electrodes have been evaluated by assembling symmetrical capacitors in NaClO(4) + HClO(4) mixed electrolyte and subjecting them to galvanostatic charge/discharge cycles between 0 and 0.75 V. The effect of substrate has been assessed by comparing the capacitance of PANI/SS and PANI/Pt electrodes. The capacitance of PANI/SS electrode is higher than that of PANI/Pt electrode by several times. The effect of sweep rate of potentiodynamic deposition of PANI/SS on capacitance has been investigated. At a power density of 0.5 kW kg(-1), a capacitance value of 815 F g(-1) of PANI is obtained for the deposition sweep rate of 200 mV s(-1). Increase in thickness of PANI on the SS substrate results in an increase in capacitance of PANI. This value of capacitance is the highest ever reported for any electrochemical capacitor material. Thus, in addition to a favorable economic aspect involved in using SS instead of Pt or Pt-based substrate, the advantage of higher capacitance of PANI has also been achieved. A series of high-martensite dual-phase (HMDP) steels exhibiting a 0.3 to 0.8 volume fraction of martensite (V m ), produced by intermediate quenching (IQ) of a vanadium and boron-containing microalloyed steel, have been studied for toughness and fatigue behavior to supplement the contents of a recent report by the present authors on the unusual tensile behavior of these steels. The studies included assessment of the quasi-static and dynamic fracture toughness and fatigue-crack growth (FCG) behavior of the developed steels. The experimental results show that the quasi-static fracturetoughness (K ICV ) increases with increasing V m in the range between V m =0.3 and 0.6 and then decreases, whereas the dynamic fracture-toughness parameters (K ID , K D , and J ID ) exhibit a significant increase in their magnitudes for steels containing 0.45 to 0.60 V m before achieving a saturation plateau. Both the quasi-static and dynamic fracture-toughness values exhibit the best range of toughnesses for specimens containing approximately equal amounts of precipitate-free ferrite and martensite in a refined microstructural state. The magnitudes of the fatigue threshold in HMDP steels, for V m between 0.55 and 0.60, appear to be superior to those of structural steels of a similar strength level. The Paris-law exponents (m) for the developed HMDP steels increase with increasing V m , with an attendant decrease in the pre-exponential factor (C).

Although some researchers have published friction and wear data of Plasma Nitride (PN) coatings, the tribological behavior of PN/PN Pairs in high vacuum environment has not been published so far In order to bridge this knowledge gap, tribological tests under dry conditions have been conducted on PN/PN Pairs for varying temperatures of 25, 200, 400 and 500 degrees C in high vacuum (1.6 x 10(-4) bar) environment. The PN coatings showed good wear resistance layer on the ring surface. The PN coatings were removed only from the pin surface for all the tests since it contacts at a point. The friction and wear were low at lower temperatures and it eliminated adhesion between the contact surfaces until the coating was completely removed from the pin surface. ZrB2 with different amounts of B4C additive (0-5 wt.%) has been hot pressed at 2000 degrees C and 25 MPa for 1 h. By addition of B4C, density as well as micro-hardness increased. For lower B4C content (0.5 and 1 wt.%), hot pressed ZrB2 shows considerable improvement in flexural strength after exposure in air at 1000 C for 5 h, while higher B4C content (3 and 5 wt.%) leads to marginal or no improvement. For any content of B4C, flexural strength after exposure in air at 1500 degrees C for 5 h is lower than as-hot pressed ZrB2. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Strength of hot pressed ZrB2-SiC composite after exposure to high temperatures (1000-1700 degrees C)
Resumo:
Residual strength (room temperature strength after exposure in air at high temperatures) of hot pressed ZrB2-SiC composites was evaluated as function of SiC contents (10-30 vol%) as well as exposure temperatures for 5 h (1000-1700 degrees C). Multilayer oxide scale structures were found after exposures. The composition and thickness of these multilayered oxide scale structure was dependent on exposure temperature and SiC contents in composites. After exposure to 1000 degrees C for 5 h, the residual strength of ZrB2-SiC composites improved by nearly 60% compared to the as-hot pressed composites with 20 and 30 vol% SiC. On the other hand, the residual strength of these composites remained unchanged after 1500 degrees C for 5 h. A drastic degradation in residual strength was observed in composites with 20 and 30 vol% SiC after exposure to 1700 degrees C for 5 h in ZrB2-SiC. An attempt was made to correlate the microstructural changes and oxide scales with residual strength with respect to variation in SiC content and temperature of expsoure. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd.
