The structures of two dehydropentapeptides, Boc-Pro-Delta Phe-Val-Delta Phe-Ala-OMe (I) and Boc-Pro-Delta Phe-Gly-Delta Phe-Ala-OMe (II) (Boc: t-butoxycarbonyl), have been determined by nuclear magnentic resonance (NMR), circular dichroism (CD), and X-ray, crystallographic studies. The peptide I assumes a S-shaped flat beta-bend structure, characterized by two partially overlapping type II beta-bends and absence of a second 1 <- 4 (N4-H center dot center dot center dot O1') intramolecular hydrogen bond. This is in contrast to the generally observed 3(10)-helical conformation in peptides with Delta Phe at alternate positions. This report describes the novel conformation assumed by peptide I and compares it with that of the conserved tip of the V3 loop of the HIV-1 envelope glycoprotein gp120 (sequence, G:P319 to F:P324, PDB code IACY). The tip of the V3 loop also assumes a S-shaped conformation with Arg:P322, making an intramolecular side-chain-backbone interaction with the carbonyl oxygen of Gly:P319. Interestingly, in peptide I, C(gamma)HVal(3) makes a similar side-chain-backbone C-H center dot center dot center dot O hydrogen bond with the carbonyl oxygen of the Boc group. The observed overall similarity indicates the possible use of the peptide as a viral antagonist or synthetic antigen. Peptide 11 adopts a unique turn followed by a 3(10)-helix. Both peptides I and II are classical examples of stabilization of unusual structures in oligopeptides.
Surface modifications in single crystal surfaces of YBa2Cu3O7-delta upon high energy ion irradiation
Resumo:
Atomic force microscopy investigations on swift heavy ion (200 MeV An) irradiated surfaces of a high T-c single crystal YBa2Cu3O7-delta are presented. Results obtained revealed an ion-induced erosion/sputtering clearly confirming our earlier observation on grain boundary dominated thin films. Apart from sputtering, notable effects were seen with many defect structures like dikes/hillocks surrounded by craters, dikes, holes, pearl like structures and ripple formation of sub-micron undulations, all in one crystal. Results are discussed in the light of co-operative phenomena of material re-distribution mechanism related to mass transfer and crater formations.

A completely automated temperature-programmed reaction (TPR) system for carrying out gas-solid catalytic reactions under atmospheric flow conditions is fabricated to study CO and hydrocarbon oxidation, and NO reduction. The system consists of an all-stainless steel UHV system, quadrupole mass spectrometer SX200 (VG Scientific), a tubular furnace and micro-reactor, a temperature controller, a versatile gas handling system, and a data acquisition and analysis system. The performance of the system has been tested under standard experimental conditions for CO oxidation over well-characterized Ce1-x-y(La/Y)(y)O2-delta catalysts. Testing of 3-way catalysis with CO, NO and C2H2 to convert to CO2, N-2 and H2O is done with this catalyst which shows complete removal of pollutants below 325 degrees C. Fixed oxide-ion defects in Pt substituted Ce1-y(La/Y)(y)O2-y/2 show higher catalytic activity than Pt ion-substituted CeO2

A thermodynamic study of the Ti-O system at 1573 K has been conducted using a combination of thermogravimetric and emf techniques. The results indicate that the variation of oxygen potential with the nonstoichiometric parameter delta in stability domain of TiO2-delta with rutile structure can be represented by the relation, Delta mu o(2) = -6RT In delta - 711970(+/-1600) J/mol. The corresponding relation between non-stoichiometric parameter delta and partial pressure of oxygen across the whole stability range of TiO2-delta at 1573 K is delta proportional to P-O2(-1/6). It is therefore evident that the oxygen deficient behavior of nonstoichiometric TiO2-delta is dominated by the presence of doubly charged oxygen vacancies and free electrons. The high-precision measurements enabled the resolution of oxygen potential steps corresponding to the different Magneli phases (Ti-n O2n-1) up to n = 15. Beyond this value of n, the oxygen potential steps were too small to be resolved. Based on composition of the Magneli phase in equilibrium with TiO2-delta, the maximum value of n is estimated to be 28. The chemical potential of titanium was derived as a function of composition using the Gibbs-Duhem relation. Gibbs energies of formation of the Magneli phases were derived from the chemical potentials of oxygen and titanium. The values of -2441.8(+/-5.8) kJ/mol for Ti4O7 and -1775.4(+/-4.3) kJ/mol for Ti3O5 Obtained in this study refine values of -2436.2(+/-26.1) kJ/mol and-1771.3(+/-6.9) kJ/mol, respectively, given in the JANAF thermochemical tables.

The k-colouring problem is to colour a given k-colourable graph with k colours. This problem is known to be NP-hard even for fixed k greater than or equal to 3. The best known polynomial time approximation algorithms require n(delta) (for a positive constant delta depending on k) colours to colour an arbitrary k-colourable n-vertex graph. The situation is entirely different if we look at the average performance of an algorithm rather than its worst-case performance. It is well known that a k-colourable graph drawn from certain classes of distributions can be ii-coloured almost surely in polynomial time. In this paper, we present further results in this direction. We consider k-colourable graphs drawn from the random model in which each allowed edge is chosen independently with probability p(n) after initially partitioning the vertex set into ii colour classes. We present polynomial time algorithms of two different types. The first type of algorithm always runs in polynomial time and succeeds almost surely. Algorithms of this type have been proposed before, but our algorithms have provably exponentially small failure probabilities. The second type of algorithm always succeeds and has polynomial running time on average. Such algorithms are more useful and more difficult to obtain than the first type of algorithms. Our algorithms work as long as p(n) greater than or equal to n(-1+is an element of) where is an element of is a constant greater than 1/4.

Nanocrystalline Ce1-xTixO2 (0 <= x <= 0.4) and Ce1-xTixPtyO2-delta (x = 0.15, gamma = 0.01, 0.02) solid solutions crystallizing in fluorite structure have been prepared by a single step solution combustion method. Temperature programmed reduction and XPS study of Ce1-xTixO2 (x = 0.0-04) show complete reduction of Ti4+ to Ti3+ and reduction of similar to 20% Ce4+ to Ce3+ state compared to 8% Ce4+ to Ce3+ in the case of pure CeO2 below 675 degrees C. The substitution of Ti ions in CeO2 enhances the reducibility of CeO2. Ce0.84Ti0.15Pt0.01O2-delta crystallizes in fluorite structure and Pt is ionically substituted with 2+ and 4+ oxidation states. The H/Pt atomic ratio at 30 degrees C over Ce0.84Ti0.15Pt0.01O2-delta is 5 and that over Ce0.99Pt0.01O2-delta is 4 against just 0.078 for 8 nm Pt metal particles. Carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon oxidation activity are much higher over Ce1-x-yTixPtyO2 (x = 0.15, 0.01, 0.02) compared to Ce1-xPtxO2 (x = 0.01, 0.02). Synergistic involvement of Pt2+/Pt degrees and Ti4+/Ti3+ redox couples in addition to Ce4+/Ce3+ due to the overlap of Pt(5d), Ti(3d), and Ce(4f) bands near E-F is shown to be responsible for improved redox property and higher catalytic activity.

We demonstrate the activity of Ce0.78Sn0.2Pt0.02O2-delta, a new catalyst, towards water-gas shift (WGS) reaction. Over 99.5% CO conversion to H-2 is observed at 300 +/- 25 degrees C. Based on different characterization techniques we found that the present catalyst is resistant to deactivation due to carbonate formation and sintering of Pt on the surface when subjected to longer duration of reaction conditions. The catalyst does not require any pre-treatment or activation between start-up/shut-down reaction operations. Formation of side products such as methane, methanol, formaldehyde, coke etc. was not observed under the WGS reaction conditions indicating the high selectivity of the catalyst for H-2. Temperature programmed reduction of the catalyst in hydrogen (H-2-TPR) shows reversible reduction of Ce4+ to Ce3+, Sn4+ to Sn2+ and Pt4+ to Pt-0 oxidation state with oxygen storage capacity (OSC) of 3500 mu mol g(-1) at 80 degrees C. Such high value of OSC indicates the presence of highly activated lattice oxygen. CO oxidation in presence of stoichiometric O-2 shows 100% conversion to CO2 at room temperature. The catalyst also exhibits 100% selectivity for CO2 at room temperature towards preferential oxidation (PROX) of residual CO in presence of excess hydrogen in the feed. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. The main purpose of the Master Thesis was to find out what kind of attitudes the pupils in the 9th grade of Finnish comprehensive school have towards music as a school subject and compare it to the attitudes of the principals at a school level. The theoretical context of the research is based on the former studies of the significance of music education in the comprehensive school, the connection between learning and attitudes and the motivational factors towards the study motivation of music. In addition to this, I have analysed the role of the evaluation and the assessment from the point of view of developing the educational system and what is the role of management and leadership in relation to the pupils` behaviour and attitudes. The data of the research is the Finnish National Board of Education`s collected data of the assessment of the learning outcomes of arts education and it is nationally representative (N=5056 I phase and n=1570 II phase), both the Finnish-language and the Swedish-language pupil data. I have especially concentrated on the items of measuring the attitudes, the certain background variables and the questionnaire of the principals. The numerical data was analyzed using the multivariate statistical methods. The results of the research prove that in general the pupils and the principals think that music is quite significant as a school subject. The girls valued music on average more than the boys when comparing all the dimensions. The differences were systematic but the effect sizes were under 10 %. There were not statistically significant differences between the Finnish-language and the Swedish-language pupils. Comparing the grades of music in the 7th grade, the differences were growing linearly and the effect size was 15.7 %. There was a positive statistically significant correlation between the Significance of music and music as a hobby (Active interest in music, Informal interest in music, Taking part of music activities in the school) during free time. The strongest correlation were with the Active interest in music variable (r= 0.53, p= .000). Also the principals thought that music is important as a school subject considering the development of the pupil and the function of the school. The answers of the pupils were not clustering at a school level and there were no strong correlations between the attitudes of the pupils and the principals. A statistically nearly significant and a slight correlation (r= 0.21, p= .011) was found between the principals valuing the Significance of the music for school function and the pupils valuing the Benefits and hobbyism. The role of a well-motivated and active music teacher can be important from this point of view. The most important conclusion of the research was that the significance of music is a very personal individual level phenomenon. The results highlight also that in the pupils` opinion the most important thing about music lessons is to musical activity and learning as an experience.
