Le conte “Villa Aurore” montre bien la mobilité et la duplicité qui caractérisent l’oeuvre de Le Clézio: en même temps que le titre de cet ouvrage, La ronde et autres faits divers, annonce la représentation de la réalité à partir des faits divers, la présence du mythe donne au récit un fort potentiel poétique, qui peut être constaté surtout dans le lyrisme du langage et dans les procédés poétiques que l’auteur utilise dans la création de ses récits. Tel que dans d’autres textes de La ronde et autres faits divers, le conte “Villa Aurore” montre la force d’un récit réaliste, attaché à la banalité quotidienne, mais qui se tourne vers le mythe, en configurant une structure circulaire, dont relève le doublement des catégories narratives du temps, de l'espace et du narrateur. Ainsi, ce travail a l’objectif de montrer comment les représentations du narrateur, du temps et de l’espace, doublées et opposées, contribuent-elles à déterminer cette structure et aussi comment semblent-elles converger pour l’expression du désir de l’évocation d’une quête sur les origines dans le corpus étudié

Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease is a non-inflammatory aseptic necrosis of the head of the femur that is found in both young animals and humans before the gap in the femur head closes. In the fields of both human and veterinary medicine the cause of this condition is not known for certain. Various factors have been put forward in the literature as being responsible for the incidence of this condition such as: abnormalities in coagulation, changes in blood flow in the arteries, a septic obstruction in the draining of the epiphysis or the upper parts of the femur, trauma, growth cycle, hyperactivity in a child, genetic influences and dietary factors. Case histories in dogs show that the first stages of the condition progress slowly but that limping or putting weight on the limb worsens at 6 to 8 weeks. Some owners talk about a sharp onset in clinical lameness. Other clinical symptoms may include irritability, loss of appetite and knawing at the hair surrounding the affected hip. In the course of physical examination manipulating the hip joint will cause pain to the animal. The advanced stages of the disease may result in restricted amplitude of movement, muscular atrophy and fracturing. In humans the clinical signs are similar, although progression of the disease is slower so that it can be diagnosed at an earlier stage. In veterinary medicine the diagnosis is, in the main, based on case history, clinical symptoms, physical examination and certain related procedures such as radiography. The various diagnoses include physical trauma and dislocation of the medial patella. In human medicine many people have been correctly diagnosed. Whatsmore, there is a range of related procedures that are virtually not available to veterinary medicine such as magnetic nuclear resonance, that show up necroses with great clarity before radiography and cintilography do, and is considered... Dans l‟“A historia de Lina et Lélio, le troisième récit de Corpo de baile, l‟oeuvre de Guimarães Rosa, Lélio arrive à la ferme Pinhém à la recherche de l'amour, de la paix d'esprit et de l'auto-connaissance, mais il n'a pas la claire conscience de cela. Dans cette trajectoire, on peut voir le poids des femmes: bien que Lélio soit le protagoniste de cette histoire, les personnages féminins présentent des différents profils et sont construites sur des aspects mythiques et archétypiques, qui ont des influences directes sur le destin de ce personnage masculin. On cherche, donc, comprendre comment l‟auteur fait la caractérisation mythique et archétypique des personnages féminins, voir l'influence de celles-ci sur la suite du récit ainsi que dans la construction du protagoniste. De la même façon, on veut vérifier comment les autres catégories du récit – telles que le temps, l'espace, le narrateur et la focalisation – peuvent contribuer à cette caractérisation. Cette recherche est développée à travers des lectures, des notes et des discussions autour du corpus, en s'appuyant sur une base théorique déterminée en trois dimensions : a) des essais critiques à propos de l‟oeuvre de l'auteur, en particulier au sujet en cause, comme celui dans l‟A raiz da alma, de Heloisa Vilhena Araujo, b) des études sur le mythe, comme celles de Ernest Cassirer, dans le Linguagem e mito et Antropologia filosófica, et les propositions de Meletínski dans l‟A poética do mito et dans l‟Os arquétipos literários et, encore, c) des textes théoriques sur les catégories du récit, présentées dans le Dicionário de teoria da narrativa, de Reis et Lopes, et des études sur l'espace, comme celui d'Antonio Dimas, Espaço e romance, et sur le temps, de Benedito Nunes, O tempo na narrativa. We determine the relation amongst the global Lê cycles and the Milnor classes of analytic hypersurfaces defined by a section of a very ample line bundle over a compact complex manifold. The key point is finding appropriate expressions for the global Lê cycles and for the Milnor classes in terms of polar varieties. Our starting points are an interpretation of the Lê cycles given by T. Gaffney and R. Gassler, a formula by A. Parusinski and P. Pragacz for the Milnor classes via McPherson’s functor, and a conjecture of J.-P. Brasselet, that we prove, stating that Milnor classes can be expressed in terms of polar varieties. We then use the work by R. Piegne for Mather classes, by J. Schürmann and M. Tibăr for MacPherson’s classes for constructible functions, and by D. Massey for an extension of the local Lê cycles for constructible sheaves.

The death has been considered a forbidden issue. To develop studies that promote reflections about it allows the enlargement of the understanding as regarding the death as about life in that both are related during the human existence. This research aimed to understand the death’s conceptions and family meanings to three different generations. For this goal, through phenomenological methodology, were achieved individual interviews with adolescents, both his parents and the grandfather, all belonging to the same family. After to understand the participant’s experiences, six thematic categories were created: a) Death’s meanings; b) The death of himself; c) The death of another and/or its possibility; d) Sources of support; e) The family in the death’s presence; f) The life in the death’s inevitability presence. From these categories, the dates were phenomenologically. The participants showed similar reports in several times, confirming the literature that says that the daily life experiences among the family members take the family to form a peculiar way to understand and an interpret their experiences. This identity family, however, did not prevent each participant to develop his particular history based in idiosyncratic elements and associated with the stage of life cycle that it is. The reports showed that the prohibition of death in society is still very present, which prevents that discussions about the issue are present in daily life. This study provided for participants to reflect on their experiences around the phenomenon of death and, consequently, about the inseparable relationship between living and dying. It has also reiterated the literature, showing the similarity of views among the family members of three generations face a vital phenomenon potentially impacting the life cycle of individual and family.

The Robert Lawrence McFadden Papers consist of correspondence, reports, minutes, studies, legislative bills, and acts, amendment copies, financial records, news releases, policy statements, maps and newspaper clippings relating to Mr. McFadden’s career as a member of the S.C. House of Representatives for District #50 of York County. the papers relate to such diverse topics and organizations as the York County Nature Museum, alcohol and drug abuse, the Catawba Regional Planning Council, the death penalty, public education, social services, Winthrop University and York Technical College, rural fire departments, et al. The collection is arranged so that the general correspondence appears first in the collection followed by a subject file arranged alphabetically. A random collection of newspaper clippings closes out the collection. All records are arranged in their respective subject files in general chronological order.

[EN] We apply an inverse model to a hydrographic cruise that completely closes the Canary Islands to investigate their effect on the water masses transports. Most central waters are transported south between the eastern islands and the African coast, with 2.5 Sv out of a total of 3.5 Sv. Intermediate waters are effectively blocked by the islands passages, with Mediterranean/Antarctic waters predominantly found north/south of the islands, and most deep waters loop around the archipelago plateau. A process model upholds the existence of intense two-way exchange between central and intermediate waters along the eastern passage, with vertical velocities of order 10 m s.

[ES] Este trabajo tiene como propósito realizar una primera aproximación al proceso histórico de ocupación de la geografía árida de Norteamérica (1860-1960) que integra la frontera norte de México con el sureste de los Estados Unidos. Se hace énfasis en el impacto general que en este proceso jugó la revolución industrial y tecno-científica que la acompañó y específicamente el papel desempeñado de la Gran Hidráulica en la explotación de los recursos hídricos a gran escala, habilitando el desarrollo productivo y social. Como parte del cambio histórico se expone también la emergencia de un moderno marco jurídico-institucional en torno al agua. Se cierra con la exposición de dos casos regionales para mostrar las crecientes rivalidades por los recursos hídricos ante sus nuevos usos modernos y su explotación intensiva, así como las diferentes modalidades de gestión resultantes y sus impactos en el largo plazo. [EN] This work aims to make a first approach to the historical process of occupation of the arid geography of North America (1860-1960) that integrates the northern border of Mexico with the southeast of the United States. Emphasis on the general impact that this process played the industrial and technoscientific revolution that accompanied it and specifically the role of the great hydraulic in the exploitation of large-scale water resources, enabling productive and social development. As part of the historic change is also the emergence of a modern legal- institutional framework around water. It closes with the exhibition of two regional cases to show the growing rivalries for water resources to its new modern uses and its intensive exploitation, as well as the different forms of management resulting and their impacts in the long term.

Synthetic Biology is a relatively new discipline, born at the beginning of the New Millennium, that brings the typical engineering approach (abstraction, modularity and standardization) to biotechnology. These principles aim to tame the extreme complexity of the various components and aid the construction of artificial biological systems with specific functions, usually by means of synthetic genetic circuits implemented in bacteria or simple eukaryotes like yeast. The cell becomes a programmable machine and its low-level programming language is made of strings of DNA. This work was performed in collaboration with researchers of the Department of Electrical Engineering of the University of Washington in Seattle and also with a student of the Corso di Laurea Magistrale in Ingegneria Biomedica at the University of Bologna: Marilisa Cortesi. During the collaboration I contributed to a Synthetic Biology project already started in the Klavins Laboratory. In particular, I modeled and subsequently simulated a synthetic genetic circuit that was ideated for the implementation of a multicelled behavior in a growing bacterial microcolony. In the first chapter the foundations of molecular biology are introduced: structure of the nucleic acids, transcription, translation and methods to regulate gene expression. An introduction to Synthetic Biology completes the section. In the second chapter is described the synthetic genetic circuit that was conceived to make spontaneously emerge, from an isogenic microcolony of bacteria, two different groups of cells, termed leaders and followers. The circuit exploits the intrinsic stochasticity of gene expression and intercellular communication via small molecules to break the symmetry in the phenotype of the microcolony. The four modules of the circuit (coin flipper, sender, receiver and follower) and their interactions are then illustrated. In the third chapter is derived the mathematical representation of the various components of the circuit and the several simplifying assumptions are made explicit. Transcription and translation are modeled as a single step and gene expression is function of the intracellular concentration of the various transcription factors that act on the different promoters of the circuit. A list of the various parameters and a justification for their value closes the chapter. In the fourth chapter are described the main characteristics of the gro simulation environment, developed by the Self Organizing Systems Laboratory of the University of Washington. Then, a sensitivity analysis performed to pinpoint the desirable characteristics of the various genetic components is detailed. The sensitivity analysis makes use of a cost function that is based on the fraction of cells in each one of the different possible states at the end of the simulation and the wanted outcome. Thanks to a particular kind of scatter plot, the parameters are ranked. Starting from an initial condition in which all the parameters assume their nominal value, the ranking suggest which parameter to tune in order to reach the goal. Obtaining a microcolony in which almost all the cells are in the follower state and only a few in the leader state seems to be the most difficult task. A small number of leader cells struggle to produce enough signal to turn the rest of the microcolony in the follower state. It is possible to obtain a microcolony in which the majority of cells are followers by increasing as much as possible the production of signal. Reaching the goal of a microcolony that is split in half between leaders and followers is comparatively easy. The best strategy seems to be increasing slightly the production of the enzyme. To end up with a majority of leaders, instead, it is advisable to increase the basal expression of the coin flipper module. At the end of the chapter, a possible future application of the leader election circuit, the spontaneous formation of spatial patterns in a microcolony, is modeled with the finite state machine formalism. The gro simulations provide insights into the genetic components that are needed to implement the behavior. In particular, since both the examples of pattern formation rely on a local version of Leader Election, a short-range communication system is essential. Moreover, new synthetic components that allow to reliably downregulate the growth rate in specific cells without side effects need to be developed. In the appendix are listed the gro code utilized to simulate the model of the circuit, a script in the Python programming language that was used to split the simulations on a Linux cluster and the Matlab code developed to analyze the data.
