Oxotechnetium(V) Complexes with a Novel Class of Tridentate Thiosemicarbazide Ligands

A novel tridentate thiosemicarbazide-type ligand class with an SNS donor set, H(2)L(1), was prepared by reactions of N-[N`,N`-dialkylamino(thiocarbonyl)]benzimidoyl chlorides with thiosemicarbazides. H(2)L(1) ligands readily react with (NBu(4))[TcOCl(4)] in MeOH under the formation of red oxotechnetium(V) complexes of composition [TcOCl(L(1))]. The monomeric, five-coordinate compounds are air-stable and bind (L(1))(2-) tridentate in the equatorial coordination sphere. The compounds represent the first examples of oxotechnetium(V) complexes with NS chelate-bonded thiosemicarbazones.

Crystallization and preliminary X-ray diffraction analysis of a eumenine mastoparan toxin: a new class of mast-cell degranulating peptide in the wasp venom

Mastoparans are tetradecapeptides found to be the major component of vespid venoms. A mastoparan toxin isolated from the venom of Anterhynchium flavomarginatum micado has been crystallized and X-ray diffraction data collected to 2.7 Angstrom resolution using a synchrotron-radiation source. Crystals were determined to belong to the space group P6(2)22 (P6(4)22). This is the first mastoparan to be crystallized and will provide further insights into the conformational significance of mastoparan toxins with respect to their potency and activity in G-protein regulation.

Using geostatistical analysis to evaluate the presence of Rotylenchulus reniformis in cotton crops in Brazil: Economic implications

In recent years, the productivity of cotton in Brazil has been progressively decreasing, often the result of the reniform nematode Rotylenchulus reniformis. This species call reduce crop productivity by up to 40%. Nematodes can be controlled by nematicides but, because of expense and toxicity, application of nematicides to large crop areas may be undesirable. In this Work. a methodology using geostatistics for quantifying the risk of nematicide application to small crop areas is proposed. This risk, in economic terms, can be compared to nematicide cost to develop an optimal strategy for Precision Farming, Soil (300 cm(3)) was sampled in a regular network from a R. reniformis-infested area that was a cotton monoculture for 20 years. The number of nematodes in each sample was counted. The nematode number per volume of soil was characterized using geostatistics, and 100 conditional simulations were conducted. Based on the simulations, risk maps were plotted showing the areas where nematicide should be applied in a Precision Farming context. The methodology developed can be applied to farming in countries that ale highly dependent on agriculture, with useful economic implications.

Stabilizing a class of time delay systems using the Hermite-Biehler theorem

In this paper we use the Hermite-Biehler theorem to establish results for the design of fixed order controllers for a class of time delay systems. We extend results of the polynomial case to quasipolynomials using the property of interlacing in high frequencies of the class of time delay systems considered. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. Synthesis of PID controllers for a class of time delay systems

In this paper we use the Hermite-Biehler theorem to establish results on the design of proportional plus integral plus derivative (PID) controllers for a class of time delay systems. Using the property of interlacing at high frequencies of the class of systems considered and linear programming we obtain the set of all stabilizing PID controllers. As far as we know, previous results on the synthesis of PID controllers rely on the solution of transcendental equations. This paper also extends previous results on the synthesis of proportional controllers for a class of delay systems of retarded type to a larger class of delay systems. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. Decrease in sperm number after treatment of rats with Austroplenckia populnea

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of a hexanic extract (HE) made from leaves of A. populnea collected in Botucatu, State of São Paulo, and Nova Lima, State of Minas Gerais, Brazil, at a range of doses during 7 and 14 days, on the male reproductive system of rats. The treatment did not affect the body weight, nor absolute organ weight. The serum testosterone levels, testicular sperm head counts, daily sperm production, and sperm morphology did not differ from that of the control groups. The spermatogenesis and the morphometric parameters of cauda epididymidis were not affected by the treatment. Cauda epididymis sperm number was significantly reduced in the group that received HE of Nova Lima, 1 g/kg/day, during 14 days, from the control group. (C) 2000 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
