The expression of bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) is altered in a variety of human canceres. The BMP-2/4 and BMPR-IA were recently shown to be overexpressed in high-risk premalignant and malignant lesions of oral epithelium. The present study analysed the expression of BMP-2/4 and BMPR-IA in Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma (OSCC) such as their implications in disease prognostic using munohistochemistry. Ten cases of Oral Fibroepithelial Hiperplasia were selected as a control group. The experimental group included 16 cases of OSCC without metastases and 7 cases of OSCC metastatic. The presence or absence of nodal metastases was used as parameter to evaluated the disease prognostic. The results demonstrated weak immunoreactivity for BMP-2/4 and BMPR-IA in every case of the control group. In the cases of OSCC with metastases an overexpression of BMP-2/4 (71,4%) was observed while the BMPR-IA showed weak expression (85,7%). In the cases of OSCC without metastases BMP-2/4 (62,5%) and BMPR-IA showed strong immunostaining standing out an overexpression of the receptor in all the specimens. Observed statistical significance for correlation between the oral cancer prognostic and the staining intensity of the BMP-2/4 (p=0,002). There wasn t statistical significance for association between the staining intensity of the BMPR-IA and the disease prognostic (p<0,001). In conclusion, this findings suggest that the overexpression of BMP-2/4 associated with the loss of expression of the BMPR-IA in OSCC metastatic has prognostic relevance, as the loss of sensitivity to BMPs can be an indicative of metastases development in OSCC

Nanoparticles of octakis[3-(3-amino-1,2,4-triazole)propyl]octasilsesquioxane (ATZ-SSQ) were tested as ligands, for transition-metal ions in aqueous solution with a special attention to sorption isotherms, ligand-metal interaction, and determination of metal ions in natural waters. The adsorption potential of the material ATZ-SSQ was compared with related [3(3-amino-1,2,4-triazole)propyl]silica gel (ATZ-SG). The adsorption was performed using a batchwise process and both organofunctionalized surfaces showed the ability to adsorb the metal ions from aqueous solution. The Langmuir model was used to simulate the sorption isotherms. The results suggest that the sorption of these metals on ATZ-SSQ and ATZ-SG occurs mainly by surface complexation. The equilibrium condition is reached at time lower than 3 min for ATZ-SSQ, while for ATZ-SG is only reached at time of 25 min. The maximum metal ion uptake values for ATZ-SSQ were higher than the corresponding values achieved with the ATZ-SG. In order to obtain more information on the ligand-metal interaction of the complexes on the surface of the ATZ-SSQ nanomaterial, ESR study with various degrees of copper loadings was carried out. The ATZ-SSQ was tested for the determination (in flow using a column technique) of the metal ions present in natural waters. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The isotherms of adsorption of MX2 (M = Cu2+, Co2+; X = Cl-, Br-, ClO4) by silica gel chemically modified with 3-amino-1,2,4-triazole (SiATR) were studied in acetone and ethanol solutions, at 25 degrees C. The 3-amino-1,2,4-triazole molecule, covalently bound to the silica gel surface, adsorbs MX2 from solvent by forming a surface complex. At low loading, the electronic and electron spin resonance spectral parameters indicated that the Cu2+ complexes have distorted tetragonal symmetry. The CoX2 (X = Cl-, Br-) analogues exhibit a distorted-tetrahedral geometry, whilstthe (SiATR)mCo)ClO4)(2) complex has a tetragonally distorted octahedral geometry, with four equatorial nitrogen atoms around the cobalt. Procedures for the deprotection of the 2-nitro- and 2,4-dinitrobenzenesulfonamides to give the corresponding primary amines were developed. The 2-Nitrobenzenesulfonyl group was effectively removed by HSCH2CH2OH/DBU or PhSH/Cs2CO3 in DMF under mild conditions to give the corresponding primary amines in high to excellent yield. For removal of the 2,4-dinitrobrnzenesulfonyl group, the use of thiol alone (HSCH2CH2OH or PhSH) was quite effective. Selective deprotection of 2,4-dinitrobenzene-sulfonamide in the presence of 2-nitrobznzenesulfonamide has also been achieved.

The voltammetric reduction of acetaldehyde was studied in 0.1 M LiOH: LiCl (60: 40 v/v). Welldefined waves can be seen at -1.77 and -1.60 V with the use of hanging mercury and glassy carbon electrodes. Acetaldehyde was shown to react at room temperature with the 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine and the product exhibited a differential pulse voltammetric peak at -0.90V, which was well separated from the peaks of the derivative. This allowed the indirect determination of acetaldehyde in the presence of 0.1 M ethanol/tetrabutylammonium perchlorate after 10 min of reaction. Calibration graphs were obtained for 1.00 x 10(-6)-1.00 x 10(-4) M of acetaldehyde. The detection limit is 8.14 x 10(-7) M. The method has been applied satisfactorily to the determination of total aldehyde in fuel ethanol samples without any pretreatment.

This study analyzed the histopathology of rabbit skin, previously immunized with SGE2, SGE4, and SGE6 gland extracts prepared from salivary glands of Rhipicephalus sanguineus female with 2, 4, and 6 days of feeding, at the region of the R. sanguineus female feeding lesion 2, 4, and 6 days after tick attachment. In this work, infestation-naïve New Zealand White rabbits were inoculated either with the extracts (test group (TG)) or with phosphate buffer and complete Freund's adjuvant mixture (control group 2 (CG2)). Each extract-inoculated- (TG and CG2) and non-inoculated (CG1) rabbit was subsequently infested with R. sanguineus. Skin biopsies were collected from the rabbit at the tick feeding lesion at 2, 4, and 6 days of feeding. Results revealed that rabbit immunization with gland extracts induced acquisition of resistance against this species. It should be stated that the SGE4 extract was the most effective in developing an immune-inflammatory response against ectoparasites, being this process characterized by the presence of an early and intense inflammatory cell infiltrate. On the other hand, SGE6 extract caused a later appearance of resistance with less infiltrate occurrence and intense edema at the feeding lesion site. As to the inflammatory process deriving from SGE2 extract inoculation, it was the less intense. It was concluded that immunization with different extracts from R. sanguineus female salivary glands did not change microscope features of the inflammatory process, although an earlier or more intense and later response, which was also dependent on the inoculate extract, was noticed. © 2012 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

Objectives: To determine whether histologic chorioamnionitis is associated with changes in gene expression of TLR-1, -2, -4 and -6, and to describe the localization of these receptors in fetal membranes. Study design: A total of 135 amniochorion membranes with or without histologic chorioamnionitis from preterm or term deliveries were included. Fragments of membranes were submitted to total RNA extraction. RNA was reverse transcribed and the quantification of TLRs expression measured by real time PCR. Results: All amniochorion membranes expressed TLR-1 and TLR-4, whereas 99.1% of membranes expressed TLR-2 and 77.4% expressed TLR-6. TLR-1 and TLR-2 expressions were significantly higher in membranes with histologic chorioamnionitis as compared to membranes without chorioamnionitis in preterm pregnancies (p = 0.003 and p < 0.001, respectively). Among the membranes of term pregnancies there were no differences in the expressions of such receptors regardless of inflammatory status. Regarding TLR-4 and TLR-6 expression, there was no difference among membranes with or without histologic chorioamnionitis, regardless gestational age at delivery. TLR-1, TLR-2, TLR-4 and TLR-6 expressions were observed in amniotic epithelial, chorionic and decidual cells. Conclusion: Amniochorion membranes express TLR-1, TLR-2, TLR-4 and TLR-6 and increased expression of TLR-1 and TLR-2 is related to the presence of histologic chorioamnionitis in preterm pregnancies. This study provides further evidence that amniochorion membranes act as a mechanical barrier to microorganisms and as components of the innate immune system. © 2013 Elsevier B.V.
