This work focuses on highly dynamic distributed systems with Quality of Service (QoS) constraints (most importantly real-time constraints). To that purpose, real-time applications may benefit from code offloading techniques, so that parts of the application can be offloaded and executed, as services, by neighbour nodes, which are willing to cooperate in such computations. These applications explicitly state their QoS requirements, which are translated into resource requirements, in order to evaluate the feasibility of accepting other applications in the system.

In this paper, we focus on large-scale and dense Cyber- Physical Systems, and discuss methods that tightly integrate communication and computing with the underlying physical environment. We present Physical Dynamic Priority Dominance ((PD)2) protocol that exemplifies a key mechanism to devise low time-complexity communication protocols for large-scale networked sensor systems. We show that using this mechanism, one can compute aggregate quantities such as the maximum or minimum of sensor readings in a time-complexity that is equivalent to essentially one message exchange. We also illustrate the use of this mechanism in a more complex task of computing the interpolation of smooth as well as non-smooth sensor data in very low timecomplexity.

Historical buildings are important fingerprints of the history and culture of a region and its communities. Climatic and environmental conditions are often very severe for construction materials, namely in presence of high humidity or in direct contact with water and salts. However, some historical buildings have in our days a very good condition, probably due to careful construction and/or accurate materials selection and to a specific technology. The knowledge of old mortars composition has a fundamental role on the preservation of cultural heritage, allowing information about the used materials, their performance in their specific environment, conducting to adequate and compatible materials to conservation purposes. This article presents two case studies of historical buildings with important defence functions in Lisbon coast, in which ancient lime mortars where used under severe seaside environmental actions. Mortar samples from these two case studies are characterized and the relationship of their composition with the good performance and high durability observed is discussed.

This paper discusses the technology of smart floors as a enabler of smart cities. The discussion will be based on technology that is embedded into the environment that enable location, navigation but also wireless power transmission for powering up elements siting on it, typically mobile devices. One of those examples is the smart floor, this implementation follows two paths, one where the floor is passive, and normally passive RFID's are embedded into the floor, they are used to provide intelligence into the surrounding space, this is normally complemented with a battery powered mobile unit that scans the floor for the sensors and communicates the information to a database which locates the mobile device in the environment. The other path for the smart city enabler is where the floor is active and delivers energy for the objects standing on top of it. In this paper these two approaches will be presented, by discussing the technology behind it. © 2014 IEEE.

In this paper a new simulation environment for a virtual laboratory to educational proposes is presented. The Logisim platform was adopted as the base digital simulation tool, since it has a modular implementation in Java. All the hardware devices used in the laboratory course was designed as components accessible by the simulation tool, and integrated as a library. Moreover, this new library allows the user to access an external interface. This work was motivated by the needed to achieve better learning times on co-design projects, based on hardware and software implementations, and to reduce the laboratory time, decreasing the operational costs of engineer teaching. Furthermore, the use of virtual laboratories in educational environments allows the students to perform functional tests, before they went to a real laboratory. Moreover, these functional tests allow to speed-up the learning when a problem based approach methodology is considered. © 2014 IEEE.

The great majority of the courses on science and technology areas where lab work is a fundamental part of the apprenticeship was not until recently available to be taught at distance. This reality is changing with the dissemination of remote laboratories. Supported by resources based on new information and communication technologies, it is now possible to remotely control a wide variety of real laboratories. However, most of them are designed specifically to this purpose, are inflexible and only on its functionality they resemble the real ones. In this paper, an alternative remote lab infrastructure devoted to the study of electronics is presented. Its main characteristics are, from a teacher's perspective, reusability and simplicity of use, and from a students' point of view, an exact replication of the real lab, enabling them to complement or finish at home the work started at class. The remote laboratory is integrated in the Learning Management System in use at the school, and therefore, may be combined with other web experiments and e-learning strategies, while safeguarding security access issues.

This paper addresses the role that decision analysis plays in helping engineers to gain a greater understanding of the problems they face. The need of structured decision analysis is highlighted as well as the use of multiple criteria decision analysis to tackle sustainability issues with emphasis in the use of MACBETH approach. Some insights from a Portuguese Summer Course on engineering for sustainable development are presented namely the students 'and teacher perceptions about the module of decision analysis for sustainability.

This paper presents a collaborative virtual learning environment, which includes technologies such as 3D virtual representations, learning and content management systems, remote experiments, and collaborative learning spaces, among others. It intends to facilitate the construction, management and sharing of knowledge among teachers and students, in a global perspective. The environment proposes the use of 3D social representations for accessing learning materials in a dynamic and interactive form, which is regarded to be closer to the physical reality experienced by teachers and students in a learning context. A first implementation of the proposed extended immersive learning environment, in the area of solid mechanics, is also described, including the access to theoretical contents and a remote experiment to determine the elastic modulus of a given object.These instructions give you basic guidelines for preparing camera-ready papers for conference proceedings. Actualmente os educadores e professores devem adoptar uma nova postura no sentido da sua actividade profissional ser cada vez mais inovadora, além de potenciarem a aprendizagem dos seus alunos em diferentes áreas do conhecimento. A ergonomia é uma área que não se encontra incluída especificamente em nenhuma área curricular do 1º ciclo do Ensino Básico, no entanto, é de grande importância no sentido de prevenir situações de desconforto e lesões músculo-esqueléticas originados por posturas incorrectas. Com este estudo pretende-se que a área de ergonomia, nomeadamente no que respeita à adopção de posturas corporais correctas e à influência de factores ambientais, como o ambiente térmico ou a iluminação, seja uma mais valia no desenvolvimento global das crianças do 1º ciclo do Ensino Básico, constituindo uma base de aprendizagem no âmbito de saúde escolar. Pretendeu-se criar materiais pedagógicos que possam ser utilizados pelos professores e estudantes, com o objectivo de sensibilizar os mais novos e educar para a saúde. O material didáctico teve por base jogos interactivos, os quais incluíram conceitos e princípios ergonómicos, particularmente no que respeita à adopção de posturas correctas e utilização da mochila para crianças do 1º ciclo do Ensino Básico. Verificou-se que as crianças estavam motivadas e interessadas no momento de aprendizagem. Quando questionadas sobre possíveis dúvidas que surgiram na apresentação do material didáctico, a maioria não demonstrou dificuldade, evidenciando terem adquirido os conhecimentos pretendidos. O material didáctico foi bem aceite e o pré-teste permitiu identificar várias situações para melhoria. Este estudo, em geral, demonstrou que os materiais didácticos são meios capazes para a transmissão de conhecimentos proporcionando uma boa forma de aprendizagem, mesmo em assuntos novos.

The aim of this study was the assessment of exposure to ultrafine in the urban environment of Lisbon, Portugal, due to automobile traffic, and consisted of the determination of deposited alveolar surface area in an avenue leading to the town center during late spring. This study revealed differentiated patterns for weekdays and weekends, which could be related with the fluxes of automobile traffic. During a typical week, ultrafine particles alveolar deposited surface area varied between 35.0 and 89.2 mu m(2)/cm(3), which is comparable with levels reported for other towns such in Germany and the United States. These measurements were also complemented by measuring the electrical mobility diameter (varying from 18.3 to 128.3 nm) and number of particles that showed higher values than those previously reported for Madrid and Brisbane. Also, electron microscopy showed that the collected particles were composed of carbonaceous agglomerates, typical of particles emitted by the exhaustion of diesel vehicles. Implications: The approach of this study considers the measurement of surface deposited alveolar area of particles in the outdoor urban environment of Lisbon, Portugal. This type of measurements has not been done so far. Only particulate matter with aerodynamic diameters <2.5 (PM2.5) and >10 (PM10) mu m have been measured in outdoor environments and the levels found cannot be found responsible for all the observed health effects. Therefore, the exposure to nano- and ultrafine particles has not been assessed systematically, and several authors consider this as a real knowledge gap and claim for data such as these that will allow for deriving better and more comprehensive epidemiologic studies. Nanoparticle surface area monitor (NSAM) equipments are recent ones and their use has been limited to indoor atmospheres. However, as this study shows, NSAM is a very powerful tool for outdoor environments also. As most lung diseases are, in fact, related to deposition of the alveolar region of the lung, the metric used in this study is the ideal one.

Num sistema de ensino cada vez mais exigente, a experimentação assume um papel fundamental na aquisição e validação do conhecimento. No ensino da Física, a necessidade de compreender a influência do meio num dado conceito teórico leva a que a experimentação tenha um carácter obrigatório. Neste contexto, surgem três cenários capazes de suportar a aprendizagem dos conceitos teóricos adquiridos. A simulação que faz uso da velocidade e capacidades de cálculo do computador para obter o resultado de uma experiência, a experimentação tradicional em laboratório, na qual o aluno executa, presencialmente, a sua experiência e por último a experimentação remota, que permite a execução de uma experiência real sem a presença física do aluno. Esta dissertação apresenta o projeto de um aparato para experimentação remota do “Lançamento de projéteis”. De forma a providenciar um meio de ensino de Física mais flexível, o aparato desenvolvido permite, aos alunos, a determinação da aceleração da gravidade e o estudo da dependência do movimento de um projétil num conjunto de parâmetros. Este aparato, operado remotamente, é acedido via web, onde primeiramente é reservado um intervalo de tempo. O conjunto de parâmetros (“Bola”, “Altura de lançamento” e “Ângulo de lançamento”) da máquina permite suportar vários cenários de ensino da Física, com diferentes complexidades.

O Lean Thinking (Pensamento Magro) baseia-se no Sistema Toyota de Produção, também conhecido pela sigla TPS (Toyota Production System). Foi desenvolvido em ambiente fabril, em particular na indústria automóvel, por Taiichi Ohno (1988) com o principal objectivo de eliminar desperdícios. O Lean Thinking tem crescido e hoje é muito mais abrangente. Com o intuito de melhorar a aprendizagem dos conceitos e das práticas lean, têm sido desenvolvidos diversos jogos que simulam a utilização das diferentes ferramentas lean. Estes jogos têm uma vertente comercial e são especialmente dirigidos para a indústria contudo não se consegue encontrar um que consiga ser utilizado para simular individualmente as ferramentas Lean. No âmbito desta dissertação, foi desenvolvido um jogo didáctico para apoio nas aulas onde são estudadas as ferramentas Lean. As ferramentas Lean abordadas neste trabalho são: 5S, Organização de Layout e Total Productive Maintenance. O jogo desenvolvido permite introduzir as ferramentas individualmente e as simulações efectuadas possibilitam a análise das melhorias obtidas com a eliminação de desperdícios através da aplicação das diferentes ferramentas.
