Mimicking Nature, supramolecular chemistry represents the chemistry beyond the molecule, in view that intermolecularinteractions constitute the driving force for the preparation of molecular and supramolecular assemblies, using the chemicalinformation contained in molecular building blocks. Upon molecular recognition between discrete units, chemical processessuch as self-assembly and self-organisation start operating, and are the leading processes to build up supramolecular aggregates and materials. When those materials have dimensions on thenanometric scale, a recently emerging scientific discipline is defined,Nanoscience. Nanomaterials are promising tools for many applications, and their use in biomedical and clinical applicationsdefines the so-called Nanomedicine. In this review we present a few selected examples of nanomaterials designed for therapeutical purposes, emphasizing the importance of the preparation methodology in terms of their therapeutical use.

This work intends to identify the reasons why people either like or dislike chemistry classes, based on a written questionnaire answered by 157 students of private and public schools. It has a main question - "Do you like to study chemistry? Why?" - and along with others that complement it, we attempt to explore both pupils' school and personal experiences which help them to increase their learning capacities. The answers have given us a very rich piece of discussing material about the like-and-dislike on the study of chemistry mainly about the social interactions in teaching not only this but all other subjects.

Wilhelm Michler lived in Brazil for seven years from 1882 to 1889, when he died. Here, he published several articles on natural products, and became a professor of Industrial Chemistry at the Escola Politécnica, in Rio de Janeiro. He was respected by colleagues and students. This article addresses this poorly known period of the life of a scientist, world-famous by the aromatic ketone that carries his name.

Chemistry is a experimental science and should be taught emphasizing the experimental work at laboratories. Brazilian teachers either in secondary level teaching as well at University gave minor attention in laboratory experiments as a tool to improve the quality of the teaching. Adelino Leal published a monograph in 1926 which emphasizes the experimental work in the teaching of Chemistry. The French chemist Jungfleisch had a important influence in the Adelino Leal's work and was the main reference for both his work and published books.

This document here has been elaborated by the IUPAC Medicinal Chemistry section and is backed by a large number of scientists, many of whom have had direct involvement and whose names appear at the end of the article. This work discusses the role that the discovery of new medicinal agents has in the development of societies as well as in the conservation of biodiversity in terms of the work carried out on natural products. Also included are several recommendations for countries which are presently in search of their own scientific and technological development in medicinal agents. The IUPAC Medicinal Chemistry section would appreciate the collaboration of the scientific societies in every country to aid in the diffusion of this document.

An experience aiming to promote a residue interchange and recovery between the teaching laboratories of the Chemistry Institute of this University is described. At the present, several residues interchange have already appeared as advantageous. To make the work easier, a software has been developed in order to keep a record of all the residues generated by the teaching laboratories. Standard labels have been developed for the residues in order to organize them. The software and the label design are described.

The teaching apprenticeship established by CAPES for post-graduation scholarship beholders has been discussed and the criterion adopted for the implementation in the post-graduation in Inorganic Chemistry Program presented. A teaching plan for the new subject is proposed, based on the experience gained through a first group. An instrument for evaluation of the student's performance has been developed and analyzed. Aspects like knowledge, clearness, enthusiasm, confidence, good manage on the audio-visual resources, class length are mentioned by degree of importance and the major difficulties faced and pointed out by the students.

In this work, the fruit extracts of Morus nigra - mulberry, Syzygium cuminii - jambolão, Vitis vinifera ¾ grape, Myrciaria cauliflora - jabuticaba are suggested as pH indicators in the form of either solutions or paper. The pH indicator solutions were prepared by soaking the fruits or their peels in ethanol 1:3 (m/V) for 24 h, followed by simple filtration. The pH indicator papers were prepared by imersion of the qualitative filter paper strips in the pH indicator solutions. The different pH leads to color changes in the indicator solutions or papers and it can be used for teaching elementary chemistry concepts.

The gas-phase ion-molecule reactions of the Me3SiN(H)SiMe2+ ion, obtained by electron ionization from Me3SiN(H)SiMe3, have been studied in a Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance spectrometer in order to understand the mechanistic details of an important chemical system presently used in film formation. This silyl cation has been observed to undergo addition reactions at electron rich centers to form stable adducts that may undergo further methane elimination in the case of alcohols and amines. The most important feature of these reactions is the fact that a metathesis type reaction can be observed in the presence of H2O, and other hydrogen labile substrates like alcohols, leading to the formation of the corresponding oxygen-containing ion, i.e. Me3SiOSiMe2+. For alcohols (ROH), facile formation of a tertiary product ion, presumably corresponding to an Me3Si-O-Si(Me)=O+-R structure with elimination of an amine reveals the strong tendency of these nitrogen-containing ions to undergo metathesis type reactions with oxygen containing substrates.

This work focuses its attention in teaching through problems, as a methodological strategy in the system of chemistry learning situations. The philosophical and epistemological basis of our perspective are the works that were developed by M. Majmutov and M.M. Llantada, in the field of sciences didactics and in the social-historical context of the school, where the fundamental categories that structure teaching through problems are discussed: the problem, the problematic tasks and problematic, as main orientations in the process of construction of the knowledge by the students.
