This article is the first linguistic analysis of a new category of lifestyle magazines in the German speaking countries, based on methods of corpus linguistics and multimodal discourse analysis. Since the launch of the magazine LandLust in Germany in 2005, more than twenty publications of so called "land magazines" have appeared on the market, attracting millions of readers. Our research analyses land magazines as discursive events. We examine the specific combination of discourses land magazines are serving or creating by looking at the semiotic practices – writing and images – they manifest themselves by. Our results show that the magazine under scrutiny does not simply provide new forms of escapism but also positions itself politically in subtle ways as part of the traditional-conservative spectrum by reacting to metalinguistic discourses such as purism and feminist criticism.

What’s behind the mistakes and difficulties that appear on the students to understand and study mathematics?are only related to the cognitive complexity of the content or such difficulties are also related to the possible ways to access the different mathematical objects? The mathematical activity generated in many students learning difficulties that are not manifested in cognitive processes related to other areas of knowledge. If something characterizes the processes of teaching and learning of mathematics is that, unlike what happens with the objects of study in the experimental sciences, the only way to access to them is through its different semiotic representations. The coordination among the different systems of representation that refer to the same mathematical concept, needs to move from one register to another (D’Amore, 1998, 2001, 2003, 2004, 2006; Duval, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 2000, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2007, 2008, 2011, 2012; Godino, 2002, 2003, 2012, 2014; Kaput, 1989a, 1989b,1992, 1998; Radford, 1998, 2004a, 2004b, 2004c, 2006a, 2008,2009, 2011, 2013, 2014a). Therefore, the treatments that can be realized within a given register and the conversion of one register into another, play an essential role in the grasp of the object and mathematical concepts. Through this work with representations, students give meanings to the objects of study and are able to understand the underlying mathematical structures, which is the main educational interest of this issue...

The Scottish Legendary is a fourteenth century collection of saints’ lives in Older Scots. The prologue describes the lives as ‘merroure’ (mirror) to readers from which ‘men ma ensample ta’ (people may take example). Thus, the Legendary sets out to reveal how the reader is (mirror) thereby moving her to wish to become how she should be (exemplarity). This dissertation argues that, rather than encouraging devotion to saints along purely dogmatic lines, the Legendary transforms the reader’s selfhood by engaging her affectively, i.e. on an emotional and somatic level. By provoking the reader affectively, the text puts the reader into what Julia Kristeva has described as a ‘semiotic state’ which harks back to the reader’s or listener’s pre-cultural, pre-subjective self (Kristeva, 1984). Thus, the text disrupts the reader’s conception of herself as a complete, hermetic subjectivity, thereby dissolving the boundaries of the reader’s self. The Legendary most powerfully infiltrates the reader’s sense of self along these lines in the moments in which female saints’ bodies are tortured and dismembered. These scenes foreground the permeability of human flesh as well as its powerful influence over selfhood. Such images of abjection are, in Kristeva’s words, ‘opposed to I’; by confronting the reader with the disintegration of subjectivity in abjection, the text incites the reader to likewise experience herself as abject, i.e. disintegrable and permeable (Kristeva 1982). As I shall demonstrate, Kristeva’s psychoanalytic theory of the formation of the self offers a fruitful framework for understanding the processes of self-knowledge through reading that these saints’ lives inspire.

The goal of the present work is to develop some strategies based on research in neurosciences that contribute to the teaching and learning of mathematics. The interrelationship of education with the brain, as well as the relationship of cerebral structures with mathematical thinking was discussed. Strategies were developed taking into consideration levels that include cognitive, semiotic, language, affect and the overcoming of phobias to the subject. The fundamental conclusion was the imperative educational requirement in the near future of a new teacher, whose pedagogic formation must include the knowledge on the cerebral function, its structures and its implications to education, as well as a change in pedagogy and curricular structure in the teaching of mathematics.

This article aims to undertake a discursive analysis of the label and advertising material of three beers sold in Brazil: the Cafuza beer, the Mulata beer and Devassa Negra beer. Starting from the regularity that binds and weaves the statements in question - the reference to the African-Brazilian woman - the objective is to present an analysis that considers the semiotic nature of these statements, and bring out their enunciation margins and its historical dimension. The purpose is to analyze the discursive thread that provides conditions of emergence, providing visibility to the scenario of enslavement still perdurable here as historical a priori, in a game of memories that echo through time. What we will see is the body of the black woman (also mulatto and black-indian woman) caught by a discourse that comes from the image of the female sexual slavery and reaches today its exacerbation, especially if we think of the (con)fusion established between the brand names of those beers and the women printed on their labels: products to be consumed? As a theoretical and methodological framework, this article will have as a starting point the discussions made within the French Discourse Analysis in the course of the 1980s. We will bring forward a discussion, although in general, on how emerges, in that decade, the concerns about a semiotic materiality of discourse, beyond the linguistic materiality. Anchored by this panorama, our goal is to work out new perspectives through its analytical application. It is the attempt to take the statement considering the different languages that comprise it, as well as to provide it with the historical density intrinsic to it, making it appear, in the light of the day, what was not visible immediately.

Considering this thematic dossier, which aims to establish an overview of theoretical and methodological studies of various theories of discourse, we present in this paper the main theoretical foundations of tensive semiotics. Current development of French semiotics, such theoretical approach, developed mostly by the French semiotician Claude Zilberberg, it can be characterized by, in general, grant privileged place for the continuity and affection in discourse. Semiotics, discipline whose object of study is the meaning, has an interdisciplinary basis making it one of the most advanced theories of text/discourse presently. One of the subjects that drew to configure itself as a discipline was phenomenology, which has been rescued in recent decades by semiotic studies. This phenomenological turn, into which fits the tensive semiotics, implies a change in which the sensitive aspect of meaning overlaps the intelligible. Thus, this paper presents firstly the relationship between semiotics and phenomenology, highlighting the Merleau-Ponty’s concept of the presence field. Secondly, it addresses the question of continuity and affection in theory and, finally, presents its main theoretical and methodological foundations, whose most important analytical tool is the tensive space, a result of the intensity axis projection (sensible) on the axis of extent (intelligible). Therefore, the tensive semiotics, which has is in France and Brazil its prominent poles of development, progressively emerges as a solid theoretical perspective to analyze textual and discursive phenomena, characterized by instability, affection, by chance, in short, by event.

The current study has two complementary aims. On the one hand, it was to develop a semiotic analysis under a perspective of the interdircourse; on the other hand, it was to study the structure and functioning of the discourse and the discursive pratictice of the two most important cooperative currents in Brazil nowadays, the Solidarity Economy and the Official Cooperativism and verify the interdiscursive relationship which is at the basis of its constitution. For this, it was analyzed some doctrinal texts of both movements, which socially have different kinds of conflicts, including the discursive. The results have shown that a discourse is the opposite of the other. Therefore, while the Official Cooperativism emphasizes economic success and keeps relationships with the discourse of capitalist companies, the Solidarity Economy adopts the point of view of fighting against social inequalities, establishing a discontinuous relationship with the capitalist discourse.
