A study on the breeding biology of the GIFT strain of Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus, was conducted for a period of five months. The sex ratio of the parent individuals was optimized for performance in spawn production, where the best results were obtained with a sex ratio of female to male of 4:1 compared to those of 3:1 and 2:1. The diameter of eggs obtained from the GIFT stock had major and minor axes of 2.19±0.09 and 1.72±0.07 mm, respectively, with no significant differences between the treatments. The average number of eggs produced was 392±22 per female, with fertilization and hatching rates ranging between 94-96% and 85-88%, respectively. No significant variation was observed between the treatments. Breeding frequencies per female in the three treatment groups ranged between 10-40 days and the highest value was obtained at a female to male sex ratio of 4: l. In an other experiment, l7 aMethyltestosterone (MT) was applied orally to the fry at their first feeding stage with treatments- 1, 2, 3 and 4 at the dosage of 100, 80, 60 and 40 mg/kg feed respectively, for the period of 28 days. The mean percentage of males obtained in treatments, 1, 2, 3 and 4 were 98, 97, 95 and 68, respectively. Treatments-1, 2 and 3 did not differ significantly (P>0.05) from each other but treatment 4 showed significant variation (P<0.05) from other treatments. The results showed that MT-100, 80 and 60 mg/kg feed administered for 28 days produced close to cent percent male population of the GIFT strains in aquaria.

The aim of this study was to evaluate growth performance of the GIFT (Genetically Improved Farmed Tilapia) strain after one generation of selection for increased body weight at Bangladesh Fisheries Research Institute. Founder stock comprised of 30 families having 300 individuals of the GIFT strain were introduced from Malaysia through \X!orldFish Center in March 2005. The founder stock was reared in 100 m2 hapa for three months and then individually tagged using Passive Integrated Transponder (PIT) at the weight between 30 and 40 g. After tagging, all the fish were communally grown out in pond until harvest. Breeding value for body weight was estimated using SAS and ASREML ranging from 4.17 to 9.70 g for males and 4.24 to 9.36 g for females. The best 40 females and 40 males from the founder stock were then selected to produce progeny of the first generation (F-1). From each family 25 female and 25 male fingerlings were sampled and tagged using PIT. A total of 2,000 tagged fish from 40 families were stocked in a pond (1000 m2) for a continuation of the selection program. In addition, surplus fish after tagging were also reared together with progeny of the founder stock in cistern ecology for growth evaluation. The mean weight of the F-1 generation of GIFT fish was 7.2% greater than that of the founder population (non selected population).
Over-wintering performance of mixed sex and monosex tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus L.) in Bangladesh

An experiment was conducted for six months in 6 experimental ponds (each size 80 of m2) to assess the over-wintering performance between mixed sex and monosex tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus. The experiment was carried out with two treatments each with three replicates. In the first treatment (T1), mixed sex tilapia were stocked in 3 ponds with a mean initial of 4.80±0.18 g. In the second treatment (T2), monosex tilapia were
stocked in another 3 ponds with a mean initial weight of 4.81 ±0.20 g. Each pond was stocked with 250 fingerlings. Fish were fed at the rate of 6% of fish body weight at the beginning. The feeding rate was gradually reduced to 2% for the third month and finally increased to 3% for rest of the period. Water quality was monitored fortnightly and the ranges were: temperature17.86-29.10°C, dissolved oxygen 4.25-6.10 mg/1, pH 6.97-7.20 and transparency 24.10-36.50 cm. Two groups of antimicrobial peptides have been isolated from skin secretions of Bombina maxima. Peptides in the first group, named maximins 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5, are structurally related to bombinin-like peptides (BLPs). Unlike BLPs, sequence variations in maximins occurred all through the molecules. In addition to the potent antimicrobial activity, cytotoxicity against tumor cells and spermicidal action of maximins, maximin 3 possessed a significant anti-HIV activity. Maximins 1 and 3 were toxic to mice with LD50 values of 8.2 and 4.3 mg/kg, respectively. Peptides in the second group, termed maximins H1, H2, H3 and H4, are homologous with bombinin H peptides. cDNA sequences revealed that one maximin peptide plus one maximin H peptide derived from a common larger protein. A novel trypsin inhibitor was identified and purified from skin secretions of Chinese red-belly toad Bombina maxima. The partial N-terminal 29 amino acid residues of the peptide, named BMTI, were determined by automated Edman degradation. This allowed the cloning of a full-length cDNA encoding BMTI from a cDNA library prepared from the toad skin. The deduced complete amino acid sequence of BMTI indicates that mature BMTI is composed of 60 amino acids. A FASTA search in the databanks revealed that BMTI exhibits 81.7% sequence identity with BSTI, a trypsin/thrombin inhibitor from European toad Bombina bombina skin secretions. Sequence differences between BMTI and BSTI were due to 11 substitutions at positions 2, 9, 25, 27, 36-37, 39, 41-42, 50 and 56. BMTI potently inhibited trypsin with a K-i value of 0.06 muM, similar to that of BSTI. However, unlike BSTI, which also inhibited thrombin with a K-i value of 1 muM, no inhibitory effect of BMTI on thrombin was observed under the assay conditions. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science Inc. Effect of salinity on food consumption and growth of juvenile Nile tilapia (Oreochromi niloticus L.)

The effect of salinity (0, lO and 20%o, water temperature 28 ± l oC) on food consumption and growth of juvenile Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus L. (9.94 ± 0.15 g) were investigated by feeding group of 20 fish at 2% body weight day. Individual food consumption was measured using X-radiography. There were no significant differences in growth or white muscle protein concentrations among groups. During feed deprivation, weight loss was similar for fish held at O%o and 10 %o salinity, but after 7 days over 50% of the fish maintained at 20%o salinity developed lesions covering 5-25% of the body. No significant relationships were observed between individual specific growth rates and food consumption rates within the groups. The fish in all salinity groups showed a negative correlation between specific growth rate and food conversion ratio. The coefficient of variation for wet weight specific food consumption and the mean share of meal for each fish were used as a measure of social hierarchy strength. A negative correlation was observed between coefficient of variation in food consumption and mean share of meal. The social hierarchy structure was similar in all salinities; 25% of the fish were dominant (18.29% above an equal share of meal) and 30% were subordinate (16.19% below an equal share of meal) and the remainder 45% fish fed theoretical share of meal (MSM, 5.26%).

An experiment was conducted to understand the culture feasibility of sliver barb
(Barbodes gonionotus) and GIFT (Genetically Improved Farmed Tilapia) with shrimp
(Penaeus monodon). There were three different treatment (T) combinations: (T1) shrimp
(10,000/ha) and silver barb (10,000/ha), (T2) shrimp (10,000/ha) and GIFT (10,000/ha),
and (T3) shrimp (10,000/ha). Shrimp, after 120 days of culture, attained an average weight
of 23.77g in T1, followed by T3 (23.70g). The highest average weight was recorded in T2
(24.93g). The specific growth rate (SGR) of shrimp was 6.9%, 6.94% and 6.9% for T1 T2
and T3, respectively. The SGR for the B. gonionotus and GIFT was 2.56% and 4.26%,
respectively. The final weight of silver barb was 69.75g and that of GIFT was 161.83g.
Survival of shrimp was higher (65.50%) in T2, followed by T3 (59.97%) and T1 (57.03%).
Survival rate of silver barb (58.10%) was lower compared to that of GIFT (78.43%).
Sporadic and scanty mortality of silver barb with a symptom of blind-red-protruded eye,
swollen belly and body lesion was observed. Production of shrimp was higher of 284.05
kg/ha in monoculture, followed 162.47 kg/ha in concurrent culture with silver barb and
136.77 kg/ha culture with GIFT. In spite of similar stocking density of B. gonionotus and
GIFT in T1 and T2, respectively, the production of GIFT was higher (1272.95 kg/ha)
than that of silver barb ( 402.72kg/ha). Survival, final weight and production rates of

Tilapia zillii was examined in three major dams in Ekiti State, Nigeria (Ureje dam, Ado, Egbe dam and Ero dam) for their morphometric characteristics and meristic traits. The results showed that the average body weight of the fish sampled were 145.86±50.06g in Ado, 30.19±9.35g in Egbe and 40.58±52.30g in Ero dam. Average total lengths were 21.29±3.20cm, 12.32±1.74cm and 11.24±1.56cm for Ado, Egbe and Ero dam respectively. The relationship between average weight and length of T. zillii showed that Y=15.202X-179.33 (R2=0.7181), Y=4.40049±-24.075 (R2=0.6708) and Y=2.6676X10.596 (R2=0.0063) for Ado, Egbe and Ero dam respectively. The results on headlength, total length, body weight and standard length and pre-pelvic distance are significantly different at 95% among the T.zillii of the three dams. There was no significant difference in the meristic traits of the T. zillii of the three dams. The population size of T.zillii in the three dams was just too small compared to other species of fish hence the need to assess the stock of fish in these dams critically for the encouragement of proper fishing activities in these dams.

Effects of different levels of salinity on survival, growth and gonadal development of Genetically Improved Farmed Tilapia (GIFT) were studied under laboratory conditions in glass aquarium, for a period of ten weeks. The initial individual size of the GIFT was 20.23±4.45 and the salinity levels tested were 0, 5, 10, 15 and 20 ppt. The highest survival of 87.5% was found in 0 ppt and the lowest 60.5% in 20 ppt. Though the survival decreased progressively with increased salinity, there were no significant differences (P>0.05) among 0, 5, and 10 ppt. Similar to what has been observed in survival, the specific growth rate (SGR %/day) also decreased as of 1.30, 1.24, 1.08, 0.90 and 0.71, respectively, with the increased salinity of 0, 5, 10, 15 and 20 ppt. The gonadal development was highest in 0 ppt with a GSI value of 3.75 and lowest of 2.01 in 20 ppt. In the second experiment, gonadal development and seed production performance of GIFT in brackishwater condition were investigated for a period of three months. Each of the three fine meshed hapas of 20 square meters made from nylon net was placed in a freshwater (0 ppt) and in a brackish water (10-15 ppt) pond of the Brackishwater Station (BS). GIFT of 65 g average weight from a single cohort were stocked into three hapas at a rate of 2 per m. The male vs female ratio was 1:3. The development of gonad was faster with the higher gonadosomatic index (GSI %) of 3.85 % in freshwater condition than that of 2.73 % in brackish water. Within three months of the study period, a total of 70,510 and 44,250 GIFT fry were produced respectively, in freshwater and brackishwater conditions. Finally under third experiment, a participatory on-farm trial was carried out to evaluate the production performance of GIFT in monoculture and in polyculture with silver barb in coastal freshwater pond conditions. Nine ponds were selected for three treatment combinations of GIFT monoculture (T1), GIFT and silver barb polyculture (T2), and silver barb monoculture (T3). The ponds have been stocked in April, 05 at a density of 25,000 fry per ha. Fishes were fed with rice bran at the rate of 6% bw per day. In one month culture period, GIFT attained an average weight of 16.27 g in monoculture and 17.23 g in polyculture, against an average stocking weight of 0.37 g. Silver barb reached an average weight of 16.62 g in polyculture with GIFT and 10.01 g in monoculture, against an average stocking weight of 3.79 g.

In a goat-tilapia integrated farming system, the effect of Black Bengal goat manure on the growth and production of Oreochromis niloticus was studied at the Freshwater Substation, Shantahar, Bogra for 4.5 months. The stocking density used in three treatments were, 200 goats and 15,000 GIFT strain/ha (T1); 300 goats and 15,000 GIFT strain/ha (T2); and only 15,000 GIFT strain/ha (T3). The initial individual total length and weight of stocked tilapia were 7.6 cm and 11.34 g, respectively. Twelve ponds each having an area of 40 square meters were used for this trail [sic]. On one side of each pond goat shed was constructed and the space allocated for each goat was 0.75 m x 1.5 m. Newly weaned black Bengal goats of average weight 8.45 kg was used in the trial. Every morning the goats manure was swiped out in ponds through the fixed opening of bamboo made floor of goat shed. Water depth of the ponds was maintained at 0.75 m. The highest fish production was in treatment 1 (1,750 kg/ha) followed by treatment 2 (1,455 kg/ha) and treatment 3 (621 kg/ha). The difference in individual goat weight was not significant (P>0.05) among treatments 1 and 2.

The biochemical and nutrient compositions of red and white meat of tuna are reported. Based on the data the biochemical role and nutritional quality of red and white meat are discussed. The results show that red meat is adapted for slow and continuous activity and white meat for quick but occasional activity. In spite of comparatively low lysine content the red meat is adjudged more nutritious than white meat.

Tilapia from fresh water and brackish water-sources behaved differently during iced and frozen storage. The former showed an ice storage shelf life of about 13 days while the latter showed signs of spoilage beyond 10 days. In their respective freezing characteristics, the samples from the two sources exhibited far more significant variations. The fresh water type iced for 13 days preserved well for over 24 weeks when frozen and kept at a temperature of -18° C, while the brackish water variety held in ice for 10 days and subsequently frozen gave a shelf life of only 8 weeks under similar conditions.

The differences between the white and red (dark) meat of tuna (Katsuwonus pelamis) in chemical, physical and organoleptic aspects and the rate and pattern of spoilage during freezing and subsequent storage are discussed in this communication. In the indices studied distinct difference is seen between the white and red meat as well as in the head, middle and tail portions of the same fish. The characteristic colour of tuna meat is due to the presence of haemoglobin and myoglobin, the concentrations of which are about 5 times more in red meat than in white meat. The shelf-life of the frozen material varies with the type of the pack, that is, whole fish>chunks>fillets; the fillets being adversely affected during frozen storage.

Phosphorylase from muscle of tilapia (Tilapia mosambica) was extracted by water and purified by ammonium sulphate precipitation, centrifugation and repeated recrystallisation. Electro-phorogram of the enzyme preparation showed a single band near origin. The enzyme showed optimum pH and temperature at 6.1 and 37°C respectively. Glucose and glucose-6-phosphate were found to be competitive inhibitors of the enzyme. Maltose and starch acted as primers for the phosphorylase reaction like glycogen.
