A new digital computer mock circulatory system has been developed in order to replicate the physiologic and pathophysiologic characteristics of the human cardiovascular system. The computer performs the acquisition of pressure, flow, and temperature in an open loop system. A computer program has been developed in Labview programing environment to evaluate all these physical parameters. The acquisition system was composed of pressure, flow, and temperature sensors and also signal conditioning modules. In this study, some results of flow, cardiac frequencies, pressures, and temperature were evaluated according to physiologic ventricular states. The results were compared with literature data. In further works, performance investigations will be conducted on a ventricular assist device and endoprosthesis. Also, this device should allow for evaluation of several kinds of vascular diseases.

The purposes of this workwere to characterize postharvest injuries and to evaluate the physicochemical characteristics of`Nra` and `Lima`oranges and `Murcott` tangor at Ceagesp market, as well as to characterize the environmental mycoflora in retail points at Ceagesp in 2006. Fruits collected at retail points were stored for 14 days at 25 degrees C and 85-90% RH. The incidence of injuries was visually evaluated every three days. The physicochemical characteristics analyzed were titratable acidity and soluble solids amount. The environmental mycoflora was sampled according to the gravimetric method, using Petri dishes containing potato-dextrose-agar medium+pentabiotic opened for two minutes. The average rot incidences in `Pera` and `Lima` oranges and `Murcott` tangor were 12.8, 14.9 and 25.8%, respectively, at the end of the storage period, and green mold was the main postharvest disease. Associations between physicochemical parameters and rot incidence was, in general, not significant. The environmental fungal population varied significantly between the sampling months in retail points with an average of 25.3 cfu/plate. Penicillium and Cladosporium were the most recorded genera of fungi. Positive correlation (r=0.96) was observed between frequency of P digitatum found in the environment of retail points and the green mold in on-sale fruits of `Pera` orange. However, for `Lima` orange and `Murcott` tangor such a correlation was not verified.

Unripe banana flour can be an alternative to minimize post-harvest loss and to increase the aggregate value of banana fruit. Flour from unripe banana is rich in phytosterols and resistant starch, being proposed as health food. Flours from unripe banana peel and pulp were evaluated on their composition, phytosterols content, thermal and rheological properties, and pasting profiles. High amounts of beta-sitosterol, campesterol, and stigmasterol were found in flour from banana peel. These samples showed lower viscosity values of pasting profiles, lower energy enthalpy on gelatinization, and higher temperature of gelatinization than those ones from pulp. Anti-oxidant treatment of fruits with citric acid does not change pasting profiles of flours from pulp, but resulted in slight increase in viscosity, suggesting that structure of starch could be modified by acidification.

Several epidemiological and research studies suggest that a high intake of foods rich in natural antioxidants increases the antioxidant capacity of the plasma and reduces the risk of some kinds of cancers, heart diseases, and stroke. These health benefits are attributed to a variety of constituents, including vitamins, minerals, fiber, and numerous phytochemicals, such as flavonoids. Thus, in addition to measuring the composition of the usual macronutrients and micronutrients, it seems important to also measure the antioxidant capacity of foods. For this purpose, 28 foods including fruits, vegetables and commercially-frozen fruit pulps were analyzed for antioxidant capacity. The antioxidant capacity of the foods varied from 0.73 to 19.8 mu mol BHT equiv/g. The highest values were observed for wild mulberries (19.8 mu mol BHT equiv/g), acai fruit pulp (18.2 mu mol BHT equiv/g) and watercress (9.6 mu mol BHT equiv/g). The antioxidant capacities are only indicative of the potential of the bioactive compounds; however, these data are important to explore and understand the role of fruit, vegetables and other foods in health promotion. Papaya (Carica papaya) is a relevant tropical crop and physico-chemical changes take place very quickly, as a consequence of activation of biochemical pathways by de nova synthesis of several proteins. Thus, in order to have information on the changes in gene expression in ripening papaya, transcripts from the pulp of unripe and ripe fruit were profiled by differential-display RT-PCR (DDRT-PCR). Seventy transcript derived fragments (TDFs) isolated from gels were re-amplified by PCR and differential expression of 40 papaya genes was confirmed by reverse northern blotting. Twenty-nine positively cloned TDFs were sequenced, and 17 were putatively identified by homology search. Ten of these genes were downregulated during ripening and UDP-glucose glucosyltransferase, alpha-2 importin, RNase L inhibitor-like protein, and a syntaxin protein were identified. Among the up-regulated genes there was a carboxylesterase, an integral membrane Yip1 family protein, a glycosyl hydrolase family-like protein and an endopolygalacturonase. Considering their relatedness to papaya quality, the fragments of genes potentially implicated in carbohydrate metabolism and pulp softening may be considered of interest for further studies. According to the results, differential display was a feasible approach to investigate differences in gene expression during fruit ripening, and can provide interesting information about those fruits whose genomic data is scarce, as is the case of papayas. The effects of acai pulp addition and different probiotic bacteria on the fatty acid profile of stirred yoghurt were examined. Skim milk was divided into two groups: one containing acai pulp and another without the fruit. Batches were inoculated with yoghurt starter culture and divided into five groups according to probiotic addition. Counts of viable microorganisms were measured at days 1, 14 and 28 of cold storage. Fatty acid profile was determined by gas chromatography at day 1. Acai pulp favoured an increase in Lactobacillus acidophilus L10, Bifidobacterium animalis ssp. lactis Bl04 and Bifidobacterium longum Bl05 counts at the end of 4 weeks of cold storage. This study demonstrated that acai pulp addition increased monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acid contents in probiotic yoghurt and enhanced the production of cc-linolenic and conjugated linoleic acids during fermentation of skim milk prepared with B. animalis ssp. lactis Bl04 and B94 strains. Bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) are multi-functional growth factors belonging to the transforming growth factor beta superfamily, especially BMP-2, induce bone formation in vivo, and clinical application in repair of bone fractures and defects is expected. However, appropriate systems to delivery BMPs for practical use need to be developed with the objective to heal cartilage and bone-related diseases in medical, dental and veterinary practice. Thus, the aim of this article was to present an overview of the principals carriers used to delivery BMPs and alternative delivery systems for these proteins.

Iron and oxidative stress have a regulatory interplay. During the oxidative burst, phagocytic cells produce free radicals such as hypochlorous acid (HOCl). Nevertheless, scarce studies evaluated the effect of either iron deficiency anemia (IDA) or anemia of chronic disease (ACD) on phagocyte function in the elderly. The aim of the present study was to determine the oxidative burst, phagocytosis, and nitric oxide ((aEuro cent)NO) and HOCl, reactive species produced by monocytes and neutrophils in elderly with ACD or IDA. Soluble transferrin receptor, serum ferritin, and soluble transferrin receptor/log ferritin (TfR-F) index determined the iron status. The study was constituted of 39 patients aged over 60 (28 women and 11 men) recruited from the Brazilian Public Health System. Oxidative burst fluorescence intensity per neutrophil in IDA group and HOCl generation in both ACD and IDA groups were found to be lower (p < 0.05). The percentages of neutrophils and monocytes expressing phagocytosis in ACD group were found to be higher (p < 0.05). There was an overproduction of (aEuro cent)NO from monocytes, whereas the fundamental generation of HOCl appeared to be lower. Phagocytosis, oxidative burst, and (aEuro cent)NO and HOCl production are involved in iron metabolism regulation in elderly patients with ACD and IDA.

The goal of this study is to produce oleanolic acid derivatives by biotransformation process using Mucor rouxii and evaluate their antimicrobial activity against oral pathogens. The microbial transformation was carried out in shake flasks at 30A degrees C for 216 h with shaking at 120 rpm. Three new derivatives, 7 beta-hydroxy-3-oxo-olean-12-en-28-oic acid, 7 beta,21 beta-dihydroxy-3-oxo-olean-12-en-28-oic acid, and 3 beta,7 beta,21 beta-trihydroxyolean-12-en-28-oic acid, and one know compound, 21 beta-hydroxy-3-oxo-olean-12-en-28-oic acid, were isolated, and the structures were elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic analyses. The antimicrobial activity of the substrate and its transformed products was evaluated against five oral pathogens. Among these compounds, the derivative 21 beta-hydroxy-3-oxo-olean-12-en-28-oic acid displayed the strongest activity against Porphyromonas gingivalis, which is a primary etiological agent of periodontal disease. In an attempt to improve the antimicrobial activity of the derivative 21 beta-hydroxy-3-oxo-olean-12-en-28-oic acid, its sodium salt was prepared, and the minimum inhibitory concentration against P. gingivalis was reduced by one-half. The biotransformation process using M. rouxii has potential to be applied to the production of oleanolic acid derivatives. Research and antimicrobial activity evaluation of new oleanolic acid derivatives may provide an important contribution to the discovery of new adjunct agents for treatment of dental diseases such as dental caries, gingivitis, and periodontitis.

Acai, the fruit of a palm native to the Amazonian basin, is widely distributed in northern South America, where it has considerable economic importance. Whereas individual polyphenolics compounds in Acai have been extensively evaluated, studies of the intact fruit and its biological properties are lacking. Therefore, the present study was undertaken to investigate the in vivo genotoxicity of Acai and its possible antigenotoxicity on doxorubicin (DXR)-induced DNA damage. The Acai pulp doses selected were 3.33, 10.0 and 16.67 g/kg b.w. administered by gavage alone or prior to DXR (16 mg/kg b.w.) administered by intraperitoneal injection. Swiss albino mice were distributed in eight groups for acute treatment with acai pulp (24 h) and eight groups for subacute treatment (daily for 14 consecutive days) before euthanasia. The negative control groups were treated in a similar way. The results of chemical analysis suggested the presence of carotenoids, anthocyanins, phenolic. and flavonoids in Acai pulp. The endpoints analyzed were micronucleus induction in bone marrow and peripheral blood cells polychromatic erythrocytes, and DNA damage in peripheral blood, liver and kidney cells assessed using the alkaline (pH > 13) comet assay. There were no statistically significant differences (p > 0.05) between the negative control and the groups treated with the three doses of Acai pulp alone in all endpoints analyzed, demonstrating the absence of genotoxic effects. The protective effects of Acai pulp were observed in both acute and subacute treatments, when administered prior to DXR. In general, subacute treatment provided greater efficiency in protecting against DXR-induced DNA damage in liver and kidney cells. These protective effects can be explained as the result of the phytochemicals present in Acai pulp. These results will be applied to the developmental of food with functional characteristics, as well as to explore the characteristics of Acai as a health promoter. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. Under current workplace health and safety legislation, the owners and managers of a dental practice have a legal responsibility to provide staff with a safe working environment. In this article, the emphasis will be on four common areas of risk: posture when seated, handling scalpel blades, flooring and lighting.
