Various scientific studies have explored the causes of violent behaviour from different perspectives, with psychological tests, in particular, applied to the analysis of crime factors. The relationship between bi-factors has also been extensively studied including the link between age and crime. In reality, many factors interact to contribute to criminal behaviour and as such there is a need to have a greater level of insight into its complex nature. In this article we analyse violent crime information systems containing data on psychological, environmental and genetic factors. Our approach combines elements of rough set theory with fuzzy logic and particle swarm optimisation to yield an algorithm and methodology that can effectively extract multi-knowledge from information systems. The experimental results show that our approach outperforms alternative genetic algorithm and dynamic reduct-based techniques for reduct identification and has the added advantage of identifying multiple reducts and hence multi-knowledge (rules). Identified rules are consistent with classical statistical analysis of violent crime data and also reveal new insights into the interaction between several factors. As such, the results are helpful in improving our understanding of the factors contributing to violent crime and in highlighting the existence of hidden and intangible relationships between crime factors.

This report concerns the provisions and practices on betting-related match fixing in sports
within the 28 Member States. Carried out in late 2013/early 2014, respondents in each Member
State reported on that state’s gambling-related provisions in respect of football and tennis and
(in each country) a third sport determined on the basis of either its popularity (in terms of
participation or television viewing) or the existence of betting-related “scandals” in that sport
within that particular jurisdiction. Those reports helped the authors to compare the Member
States’ regulatory and self-regulatory frameworks relating to risk assessment and conflict of
interest management, with a view to indicating areas of best practice, identifying particularly
good legislative frameworks and highlighting areas where change was either desirable or
necessary. While some individual Member States have legislation which might provide
templates that others could adapt for their own use, the authors were not convinced that “more
law”, whether at the national or European level, was desirable. Rather, more effective
cooperation among the stakeholders was identified as being more likely to provide tangible
benefits than would new legal frameworks.

Land wars in India: Contestations, social forces and evolving neoliberal urban transformation
The recent incidents of ‘land wars’ in India have highlighted the contradictions and challenges of the neoliberal urban transformation through a range of issues across governance, equity and empowerment in the development agenda. Simply put, a strong top down approach and corporate-political nexus have determined the modality of land acquisition, compensation and ultimately the nature of its consumption leaving out majority urban poor from its benefits. The paper focuses on the concept of neoliberalism as a modality of urban governance and emergence of the grassroots activism as a countermagnate to neoliberalist hegemony by examining the inequity and marginalization that embody these ‘land wars’ in India and the forms of resistance from the grassroots - their capacity, relationship and modus operandi. Emerging lessons suggest the potential for advancing governance from the bottoms up leading to more equitable distribution of resources. It is however argued that there is a need for a stronger conception of the ‘grassroots’ in both epistemological and empirical context. In particular, the preconditions for the ‘grassroots organisations’ to foster and play a more effective role requires a more inclusive notion of ‘institutionality and plurality’ within the current political economic context. The empirical focus of the paper is ‘land wars’ observed in Kolkata, West Bengal, however references to other examples across the country have also been made.

In his essay, Anti-Object, Kengo Kuma proposes that architecture cannot and should not be understood as object alone but instead always as series of networks and connections, relationships within space and through form. Some of these relationships are tangible, others are invisible. Stan Allen and James Corner have also called for an architecture that is more performative and operative – ‘less concerned with what buildings look like and more concerned with what they do’ – as means of effecting a more intimate and promiscuous relationship between infrastructure, urbanism and buildings. According to Allen this expanding filed offers a reclamation of some of the areas ceded by architecture following disciplinary specialization:

‘Territory, communication and speed are properly infrastructural problems and architecture as a discipline has developed specific technical means to deal with these variables. Mapping, projection, calculation, notation and visualization are among architecture’s traditional tools for operating at the very large scale’.

The motorway may not look like it – partly because we are no longer accustomed to think about it as such – but it is a site for and of architecture, a territory where architecture can be critical and active. If the limits of the discipline have narrowed, then one of the functions of a school of architecture must be an attempt occupy those areas of the built environment where architecture is no longer, or has yet to reach. If this is a project about reclamation of a landscape, it is also a challenge to some of the boundaries that surround architecture and often confine it, as Kuma suggests, to the appreciation of isolated objects.

We tend to think of the motorway as a thing or an object, something that has a singular function. Historically this is how it has been seen, with engineers designing bridges and embankments and suchlike with zeal … These objects like the M3 Urban Motorway, Belfast’s own Westway, are beautiful of course, but they have caused considerable damage to the city they were inflicted upon.

Actually, it’s the fact that we have seen the motorway as a solid object that has caused this problem. The motorway actually is a fluid and dynamic thing, and it should be seen as such: in fact it’s not an organ at all but actually tissue – something that connects rather than is. Once we start to see the motorway as tissue, it opens up new propositions about what the motorway is, is used for and does. This new dynamic and connective view unlocks the stasis of the motorway as edifice, and allows adaptation to happen: adaptation to old contexts that were ignored by the planners, and adaptation to new contexts that have arisen because of or in spite of our best efforts.

Motorways as tissue are more than just infrastructures: they are landscapes. These landscapes can be seen as surfaces on which flows take place, not only of cars, buses and lorries, but also of the globalized goods carried and the lifestyles and mobilities enabled. Here the infinite speed of urban change of thought transcends the declared speed limit [70 mph] of the motorway, in that a consignment of bananas can cause soil erosion in Equador, or the delivery of a new iphone can unlock connections and ideas the world over.

So what is this new landscape to be like? It may be a parallax-shifting, cognitive looking glass; a drone scape of energy transformation; a collective farm, or maybe part of a hospital. But what’s for sure, is that it is never fixed nor static: it pulses like a heartbeat through that most bland of landscapes, the countryside. It transmits forces like a Caribbean hurricane creating surf on an Atlantic Storm Beach: alien forces that mutate and re-form these places screaming into new, unclear and unintended futures.

And this future is clear: the future is urban. In this small rural country, motorways as tissue have made the whole of it: countryside, mountain, sea and town, into one singular, homogenous and hyper-connected, generic city.

Goodbye, place. Hello, surface!

Nas empresas desportivas o principal ativo é o direito desportivo sobre o jogador profissional. O nosso estudo debruça-se no resultante da formação. Começámos por verificar que o direito desportivo preenche os requisitos para ser reconhecido como ativo intangível. Posteriormente analisámos os relatórios e contas de clubes europeus e de clubes brasileiros de modo a identificarmos semelhanças e diferenças ao nível contabilístico dos ativos intangíveis resultantes da formação, um dos nossos objetivos. Verificámos que a principal diferença reside no não reconhecimento do direito desportivo resultante da formação pelos primeiros, contrariamente à prática verificada nos clubes brasileiros. No cenário atual, pelo menos, os clubes europeus não proporcionam informação plena e a comparabilidade entre clubes encontra-se comprometida. Por conseguinte, outro dos nossos objetivos é propor um modelo que permita valorizar com fiabilidade o direito desportivo resultante da formação. A conceção do modelo teve o auxílio dos clubes portugueses e brasileiros, através da resposta a um inquérito dirigido a clubes europeus e brasileiros. Esta metodologia possibilitou, igualmente, confirmar conclusões resultantes da análise da informação contabilística elaborada pelos clubes e identificar outros pontos de contacto e de afastamento entre os clubes relativamente a jogadores formados internamente e ao reconhecimento inicial do direito desportivo. Concluímos que em Portugal existe informação contabilística incompleta sobre os jogadores formados internamente, dado os clubes portugueses considerarem não existir um critério de valorização fiável, e sobre os jogadores que chegam em fim de contrato. Por outro lado, todos os clubes brasileiros respondentes valorizam e reconhecem o direito desportivo resultante da formação como ativo intangível com base nos encargos com a formação do jogador. Por fim, apresentamos a nossa proposta de modelo assente no custo de formação, com a aplicação do método dos centros de gastos. Os componentes incluídos tiveram em conta a opinião dos clubes, tendo posteriormente sido efetuada a análise de clusters e a seleção final de acordo com a IAS 38 da UE. A nossa proposta foi validada junto de agentes com conhecimento e experiência sobre o fenómeno em estudo através de entrevista.

Este trabalho de investigação foi realizado com o objetivo geral de se descobrir quais são os Fatores Críticos de Sucesso e os aspectos chaves de qualidade e sustentabilidade, a serem considerados no ensino de Engenharia de Produção em um IES privada no Brasil. No presente estudo de caso executou-se uma revisão teórica sistemática nas áreas temáticas da pesquisa, que propiciou a criação de um framework que define os 7 Fatores Críticos de Sucesso ao ensino de Engenharia de Produção, apontando sua divisão nas áreas de qualidade e sustentabilidade, e, por fim, a subdivisão em 6 subáreas de ações operacionais a serem consideradas pela gestão de IES para alcançar melhorias de desempenho em suas atividades. Posteriormente ao levantamento teórico, foi realizado o estudo de caso propriamente dito, que dividiu-se em duas etapas, uma qualitativa e uma quantitativa. Na primeira elaborou-se um roteiro de entrevista em profundidade aplicada a um terço do corpo docente do curso em estudo, captando a impressão destes sobre as temáticas em estudo voltadas à execução de suas atividades. Os dados obtidos foram organizados com o auxílio do software WebQDA, gerando ideias do que deve ser trabalhado para melhorar as condições e resultados do referido curso. A etapa quantitativa foi iniciada com a elaboração de um questionário on-line, desenvolvido a partir do enquadramento teórico e da informação obtida na parte qualitativa do estudo, que envolveu respostas de cerca de dois terços dos discentes de Engenharia de Produção. A informação foi recolhida através de um formulário disponibilizado pelo googledocs, e os resultados foram analisados com o auxílio do software SPSS, permitindo conhecer as expectativas e percepções dos alunos e, consequentemente, os gaps provenientes a serem trabalhados. Finalmente, o estudo revelou que para aspectos de qualidade, os pontos de tangibilidade, como infraestrutura geral, laboratórios técnicos específicos, cantina e biblioteca, precisam ser melhorados, e, para aspectos de sustentabilidade, surge a necessidade de melhorar as formas de divulgação do curso, captação de alunos e propostas para a retenção dos mesmos para outros cursos e projetos da IES. Deste modo, o trabalho desenvolvido atingiu seu objetivo e se mostrou válido para aplicações na IES e em outros cursos da mesma (com as devidas adaptações). Fica como recomendação final aplicar o estudo periodicamente para se captar as mudanças situacionais que ocorrerem, manter um controle eficiente dos aspectos estudados e gerar melhorias contínuas no curso estudado e na própria IES.

Recentemente assistimos a uma evolução da relação do Homem com a tecnologia, em larga medida acompanhada por novos modelos de interacção que modificam a forma de conceber os artefactos e constroem novos contextos de uso. Procuramos investigar, na presente tese, uma das abordagens emergentes, o universo dos media tangíveis, articulando a perspectiva do design da tecnologia orientada para a Human-Computer Interation (HCI), com a dimensão social, cultural e estética no uso da tecnologia. Os media tangíveis, ao contrário do que sucede com os conteúdos digitais convencionais, têm espessura e expressão física e, porque são dotados de um corpo que habita o espaço das disposições físicas, estão sujeitos à acção do mundo cultural e das práticas sociais que regem os demais objectos físicos que podemos encontrar no nosso quotidiano. Esta nova relação com a tecnologia digital obrigará as disciplinas que se encontram mais próximas do desenvolvimento tecnológico, tais como o Design de Interacção e a HCI, a abrirem-se aos contributos e abordagens das ciências humanas. Admitindo que a natureza subjacente ao processo da adaptabilidade no ambiente doméstico altera o equilíbrio da relação entre o design e o uso da tecnologia, julgamos ser essencial o desenvolvimento de uma fenomenologia da interação. Por outro lado, a adaptabilidade dos media tangíveis apresenta um conjunto de dificuldades, não apenas de ordem técnica, mas também de natureza conceptual, que têm dificultado o desenvolvimento e a implementação no terreno de tecnologias personalizáveis. Um dos objectivos da presente tese consiste em investigar um quadro conceptual capaz de enquadrar o fenómeno da adaptabilidade dos media tangíveis, e desenvolver uma tecnologia que possa servir de objecto a um estudo empírico com base numa abordagem etnográfica.

: In this paper, I look at Joanne Leonard’s Being in Pictures and engage in a critical dialogue with an assemblage of visual and textual narratives that comprise her intimate photo memoir. In doing this I draw on Hannah Arendt’s take on narratives as tangible traces of uniqueness and plurality, political traits par excellence in the cultural histories of the human condition. Being aware of my role as a reader/viewer/interpreter of a woman artist’s auto/biographical narratives, I move beyond dilemmas of representation or questions of unveiling “the real Leonard”. The artist is instead configured as a narrative persona, whose narratives respond to three interrelated themes of inquiry, namely the visualization of spatial technologies, vulnerability and the gendering of memory. Résumé: L'adoption d'une innovation technopédagogique par une communauté enseignante universitaire La thèse traite de l'adoption d'une innovation technopédagogique par une communauté enseignante universitaire. Cette étude longitudinale, réalisée dans le cadre d'une recherche-action, vise à comprendre la dynamique globale du processus d'adoption d'une innovation. Le cadre de réflexion théorique de l'étude provient de la recherche en management, en systèmes d'information et en éducation. Il tient à la fois compte des motivations et des besoins des individus (dimension individuelle), de la compatibilité des technologies de l'information selon les théories usuelles de l'apprentissage (dimension pédagogique) et du type de soutien à offrir aux utilisatrices-utilisateurs (dimension organisationnelle). Le modèle d'accompagnement émergeant de cette recherche se compose de cycles itératifs au cours desquels un groupe définit et résout un problème, puis réfléchit successivement aux enjeux émergents d'un cycle à l'autre. Le modèle tient explicitement compte des trois éléments clés suivants: l'individu, la pédagogie et l'organisation qui forment une dynamique systémique indissociable et en interaction les unes les autres pendant toute la durée du processus d'adoption de l'innovation. Il met aussi en lumière la nécessité de stimuler une réflexion critique grâce au concours de ressources externes crédibles pour déterminer la compatibilité des technologies à partir d'expériences concrètes. Une telle démarche participative systématique permet d'accroître la cohésion des idées du groupe par le dialogue et les débats d'opinions_ Par ailleurs, la proximité avec notre milieu de recherche sur une période de deux ans offre la possibilité de saisir plusieurs facettes de la dynamique organisationnelle. Lorsque l'on réalise une étude longitudinale qui met en évidence l'incidence d'événements concomitants, on constate la fragilité du processus et la réversibilité de la décision d'adoption. L'intention d'adoption évolue constamment au gré des expériences des individus et du contexte qui évolue lui-même. L'établissement de relations partenariales avec les groupes intéressés représente une activité essentielle pour pallier ou neutraliser les effets indésirables d'événements concomitants.||Abstract: This thesis deals with a university teaching community adopting a technological/pedagogical innovation. This longitudinal study--part of an action-research study--aims at gaining understanding of the overall dynamics involved in adopting an innovation. The study's conceptual framework derives from management, information-systems, and teaching research. It takes into account the motivations and needs of individuals (individual dimension), the compatibility of information technologies according to current learning theories (pedagogical dimension), and the type of support to be offered to users (organizational dimension). The companion model issuing from this research work comprises iterative cycles during which a group defines and solves a problem and then successively reflects on the issues emerging from one cycle to the next. The model takes explicit account of three key elements: the individual, pedagogical approach, and organization form an indissociable system dynamic in which all dimensions interact during the entire process of adopting innovation. It also sheds light on the need to stimulate critical reflection about the combination of credible external resources so that tangible experiences can be used to determine technology compatibility. This kind of systematic participative process yields greater cohesiveness of group ideas through dialogue and discussion. Moreover, the proximity to our research setting over two years provides the opportunity to seize the many facets of organizational dynamics. During the course of a longitudinal study that highlights the incidence of concomitant events, the fragility of the process and reversibility of the adoption decision become apparent. The adoption intention constantly fluctuates through the experiences of individuals and the context, which also changes. Establishing partnership relations with interested groups stands out as an essential activity in attenuating or counteracting the undesirable effects produced by concomitant events.

The book "Dimensions of Mediterranean diet" develops the reflection around the Mediterranean Diet concept - Intangible Cultural Heritage, which took place by initiative of the University of Algarve, during the first cycle of Seminars on Mediterranean Diet, in 2013. Starting with the multiplicity of this concept, the authors follow exploring the reality of this way of life (between the sky and the earth), which is the result of an age-old training process, integrates a habit of eating well in a healthy life practice and is a vehicle for future sustainability. The images accompanying the text portray this Mediterranean identity, straight from Algarve current realities.

This research explores tourism policy making, from the perspectives of policy makers using grounded theory. It focuses on Leeds, a city in the North of England, which is characterized by its turbulent environment. The paper identifies themes around policy making, including low status, lack of clarity, uncertainty, lack of consensus and congruence and complexity. Its findings indicate policy making is essentially a social process, involving communication and negotiation between people in the context of wider change. It suggests a social conceptualization, and further research to investigate the communications involved in producing policy rather than the current research focus on the tangible outputs of the process such as a plan or a physical development.
