The short range interactions in He2, Ne2 and Ar2 have been studied in terms of the electronic forces as functions of their internuclear separations employing their single configuration SCF wave functions. The results show that the constituent molecular orbitals behave differently in terms of the forces they exert on the nuclei during the interaction process. The different behaviour of the orbitals is also reflected in the redistribution of charges.

Cavitation has been observed in the trailing vortex system of an elliptic planform hydrofoil. A complex dependence on Reynolds number and gas content is noted at inception. Some of the observations can be related to tension effects associated with the lack of sufficiently large-sized nuclei. Inception measurements are compared with estimates of pressure in the vortex obtained from LDV measurements of velocity within the vortex. It is concluded that a complete correlation is not possible without knowledge of the fluctuating levels of pressure in tip-vortex flows. When cavitation is fully developed, the observed tip-vortex trajectory shows a surprising lack of dependence on any of the physical parameters varied, such as angle of attack, Reynolds number, cavitation number, and dissolved gas content.

Polarization switching processes in TAAP and DTAAP have been studied by the Merz method. The switching process in DTAAP is slower than in TAAP. The temperature dependence of switching time indicates that the crystal might contain groups of domain nuclei with different activation energies. X-ray irradiation causes an increase in the threshold field below which switching could not occur and decrease in the mobility of domain walls. Irradiation decreases the peak value of dielectric constant, Tc and increases the value of coercive field. Domain structure studies on TAAP crystals have shown that the crystals grow as both predominantly single domain and multi domains, depending on which the internal bias increases or remains unaffected upon irradiation.

Embryonic midbrain and hindbrain are structures which will give rise to brain stem and cerebellum in the adult vertebrates. Brain stem contains several nuclei which are essential for the regulation of movements and behavior. They include serotonin-producing neurons, which develop in the hindbrain, and dopamine-producing neurons in the ventral midbrain. Degeneration and malfunction of these neurons leads to various neurological disorders, including schizophrenia, depression, Alzheimer s, and Parkinson s disease. Thus, understanding their development is of high interest. During embryogenesis, a local signaling center called isthmic organizer regulates the development of midbrain and anterior hindbrain. It secretes peptides belonging to fibroblast growth factor (FGF) and Wingless/Int (Wnt) families. These factors bind to their receptors in the surrounding tissues, and activate various downstream signaling pathways which lead to alterations in gene expression. This in turn affects the various developmental processes in this region, such as proliferation, survival, patterning, and neuronal differentiation. In this study we have analyzed the role of FGFs in the development of midbrain and anterior hindbrain, by using mouse as a model organism. We show that FGF receptors cooperate to receive isthmic signals, and cell-autonomously promote cell survival, proliferation, and maintenance of neuronal progenitors. FGF signaling is required for the maintenance of Sox3 and Hes1 expression in progenitors, and Hes1 in turn suppresses the activity of proneural genes. Loss of Hes1 is correlated with increased cell cycle exit and premature neuronal differentiation. We further demonstrate that FGF8 protein forms an antero-posterior gradient in the basal lamina, and might enter the neuronal progenitors via their basal processes. We also analyze the impact of FGF signaling on the various neuronal nuclei in midbrain and hindbrain. Rostral serotonergic neurons appear to require high levels of FGF signaling in order to develop. In the absence of FGF signaling, these neurons are absent. We also show that embryonic meso-diencephalic dopaminergic domain consists of two populations in the anterior-posterior direction, and that these populations display different molecular profiles. The anterior diencephalic domain appears less dependent on isthmic FGFs, and lack several genes typical of midbrain dopaminergic neurons, such as Pitx3 and DAT. In Fgfr compound mutants, midbrain dopaminergic neurons begin to develop but soon adopt characteristics which highly resemble those of diencephalic dopaminergic precursors. Our results indicate that FGF signaling regulates patterning of these two domains cell-autonomously.

High quality, single-crystalline alpha-MoO3 nanofibers are synthesized by rapid hydrothermal method using a polymeric nitrosyl-complex of molybdenum(II) as molybdenum source without employing catalysts, surfactants, or templates. The possible reaction pathway is decomposition and oxidation of the complex to the polymolybdate and then surface condensation on the energetically favorable 001] direction in the initially formed nuclei of solid alpha-MoO3 under hydrothermal conditions. Highly crystalline alpha-MoO3 nanofibers have grown along 001] with lengths up to several micrometres and widths ranging between 280 and 320 nm. The alpha-MoO3 nanofibers exhibit desirable electrochemical properties such as high capacity reversibility as a cathode material of a Li-ion battery.

The reactions of As-chlorocyclotriphosphazane [EtNPCl], with phenols or trifluoroethanol yield the respective aryloxy- or trifluoroethoxy-containingX 3-cyclotriphosphazanes [EtNP(OR)]3 (R = C6H4Br-4 (2),C 6H5 (3C,6 H3-Mez-3,5 (4), C6H3Mez-2,6 (5), CH2CF3 (6)) as their cis-transisomericmixtures. The products have beencharacterized by IRand NMRspectroscopy. Thecrystalstructuresofboth thecis (2a) and trans(2b) isomer_softhep-bromophenoxy derivative have been determined by X-ray diffraction. Crystal data for 2a: triclinic, P1, a = 9.872(4) A, b = 13.438(6) A, c = 13.548(8) A, CY = 117.02(5)', 0 = 96.00(6)', y = 105.38(4)O, Z = 2, final R = 0.080. Crystal data for 2b: monoclinic, P21/n, a = 12.721(6) A, b = 13.468(7) A, c = 17.882(5) A, /3 = 101.62(3)O, Z = 4, final R = 0.066. The cis isomer exhibits a chair-triaxial conformation and the trans isomer a boat-triaxial conformation. Conformational preferences of X3-cyclotriphosphazanes have been probed by both MNDO and ab initio calculations on model systems [HNPXIp (X = H, F). In addition to vicinal lone pair repulsions, negative hyperconjugative interactions involving the nitrogen lone pairs and adjacent P-X Q* orbitals are found to be important (especially when X is an electronegative substituent) in determining the conformational preferences of X3-cyclotriphosphazanes. The calculations also show that the axial - equatorial conversion at phosphorus has a large activation barrier in these systems

The origin of hydrodynamic turbulence in rotating shear flow is a long standing puzzle. Resolving it is especially important in astrophysics when the flow's angular momentum profile is Keplerian which forms an accretion disk having negligible molecular viscosity. Hence, any viscosity in such systems must be due to turbulence, arguably governed by magnetorotational instability, especially when temperature T greater than or similar to 10(5). However, such disks around quiescent cataclysmic variables, protoplanetary and star-forming disks, and the outer regions of disks in active galactic nuclei are practically neutral in charge because of their low temperature, and thus are not expected to be coupled with magnetic fields enough to generate any transport due to the magnetorotational instability. This flow is similar to plane Couette flow including the Coriolis force, at least locally. What drives their turbulence and then transport, when such flows do not exhibit any unstable mode under linear hydrodynamic perturbation? We demonstrate that the three-dimensional secondary disturbance to the primarily perturbed flow that triggers elliptical instability may generate significant turbulent viscosity in the range 0.0001 less than or similar to nu(t) less than or similar to 0.1, which can explain transport in accretion flows.

The dynamics of poly(isobutyl methacrylate) in toluene solution has been examined by C-13 spin-lattice relaxation time and NOE measurements as a function of temperature. The experiments were performed at 50.3 and 100.6 MHz. The backbone carbon relaxation data have been analyzed using the Dejean-Laupretre-Monnerie (DLM) model, which describes the dynamical processes in the backbone in terms of conformational transitions and bond librations. The relaxation data of the side chain nuclei have been analyzed by assuming different motional models, namely, unrestricted rotational diffusion, three site jumps, and restricted rotational diffusion. The different models have been compared for their ability to reproduce the experimental spin-lattice relaxation times and also to predict the behavior of NOE as a function of temperature. Conformational energy calculations have been carried out on a model compound by using the semiempirical quantum chemical method, AM1, and the results confirm the validity of the motional models used to describe the side-chain motion.

A clone showing female-specific expression was identified from an embryonic cDNA library of a mealybug, Planococcus lilacinus, In Southern blots this clone (P7) showed hybridization to genomic DNA of females, but not to that of males, However, P7 showed no hybridization to nuclei of either sex, raising the possibility that it was extrachromosomal in origin, In sectioned adult females P7 hybridized to an abdominal organ called the mycetome. The mycetome is formed by mycetocytes, which are polyploid cells originating from the polar bodies and cleavage nuclei that harbour maternally transmitted, intracellular symbionts. Electron microscopy confirmed the presence of symbionts within the mycetocytes, Sequence analysis showed that P7 is a 16S rRNA gene, confirming its prokaryotic origin, P7 transcripts are localized to one pole in young embryos but are found in the pole as well as in the germ band during later stages of development, P7 expression is detectable in young embryos of both sexes but the absence of P7 in third instar and adult males suggests that this gene, and hence the endosymbionts, are subject to sex-specific elimination. The present study examines the role of interparticle cementation in the collapse behavior of two partly saturated (S-r = 4 to 12%) and very highly porous (initial void ratio = 1.5 to 2) laboratory-desiccated clayey silt specimens containing varying amounts (5 and 15% by dry weight of the respective specimens) of the cementitious iron oxides hematite and goethite, which are generally encountered in tropical residual soils. Kaolinite is the representative clay mineral of the soil matrix used for this research. Interparticle cementation by the crystalline iron oxides was generated in the laboratory by repeated (six times) wetting and drying of the iron-hydroxide-admixed clayey silt specimens under ambient conditions of temperature and humidity. Results showed that, for a given laboratory-desiccated clayey silt specimen (i.e., a specimen containing 5 or 15% of iron oxide on a dry weight basis), the amount of collapse (represented by Delta epsilon, the change in vertical strain upon wetting under constant pressure) increases with an increase in the experimental loading under which the specimen is inundated. The laboratory results also show that the desiccated specimen with a higher iron oxide content (containing 15% iron oxide by dry weight of the desiccated specimen) in spite of a lower dry unit weight (gamma(d) = 8.8 kN/m(3)) undergoes a lesser amount of collapse on soaking under a constant external stress (50 or 100 kPa) than the desiccated specimen with a lower iron oxide content (i.e., containing 5% iron oxide by dry weight of the desiccated specimen, gamma(d) = 10.4 KN/m(3)). Based on the X-ray diffraction results and the stress-strain relationships obtained from isotropically consolidated undrained triaxial tests, it is suggested that the laboratory-desiccated specimens are characterized by a metastable bonding provided by capillary suction and the crystalline iron oxides. On soaking under load owing to the loss of the metastable bonding, collapse of the laboratory-desiccated specimens occurs. Also, in the case of the laboratory-desiccated specimen with a higher iron oxide content, the presence of a stronger interparticle cementation (due to a greater abundance of crystalline iron oxides) and a higher initial moisture content are considered responsible for the specimen exhibiting a lower amount of collapse in comparison to that exhibited by the desiccated specimen with a lesser iron oxide content.

Studies related to cavitation inception process in separated flows are reported. Experimental observations of bubble appearance in grooves with laminar or turbulent boundary layer over them have clearly shown that gaseous diffusion process is significantly enhanced in turbulent flow. This process can lead to local nuclei size modification in environment similar to that of flow over a groove, like laminar separation "bubbles." Cavitation inception modeling including this aspect is carried out for predicting inception conditions associated with "bubble-ring" cavitation commonly observed on hemispherically nosed axisymmetric body. Qualitative dependence of predicted inception numbers with velocity is found to agree very well with experimental observations of Carroll (1981).

Multiple quantum-single quantum correlation experiments are employed for spectral simplification and determination of the relative signs of the couplings. In this study, we have demonstrated the excitation of three nuclei, triple quantum coherences and discussed the information obtainable from such experiments. The experiments have been carried out on doubly labeled acetonitrile and fluoroacetonitrile aligned in liquid crystalline media. The experiment is advantageous in providing many spectral parameters from a single experiment. The coherence pathways involved in the pulse sequence are described using product operators. he specific heats of EUNi(5)P(3), an antiferromagnet, and EuNi2P2, a mixed-valence compound, have been measured between 0.4 and 30 K in magnetic fields of, respectively, 0, 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2.5, 5, and 7 T, and 0 and 7 T. In zero field the specific heat of EuNi5P3 shows a h-like anomaly with a maximum at 8.3 K. With increasing field in the range 0-2.5 T, the maximum shifts to lower temperatures, as expected for an antiferromagnet. In higher fields the antiferromagnetic ordering is destroyed and the magnetic part of the specific heat approaches a Schottky anomaly that is consistent with expectations for the crystal-field/Zeeman levels. In low fields and for temperatures between 1.5 acid 5 K the magnetic contribution to the specific heat is proportional to the temperature, indicating a high density of excited states with an energy dependence that is very unusual for an antiferromagnet. The entropy associated with the magnetic ordering is similar to R In8, confirming that only the Eu2+-with J=7/2, S=7/2, L=0-orders below 30 R. In zero field approximately 20% of the entropy occurs above the Neel temperature, consistent. with the usual amount of short-range order observed in antiferromagnets. The hyperfine magnetic field at the Eu nuclei in EUNi(5)P(3) is 33.3 T, in good agreement with a value calculated from electron-nuclear double resonance measurements. For EuNi2P2 the specific heat is nearly field independent and shows no evidence of magnetic ordering or hyperfine fields. The coefficient of the electron contribution to the specific heat is similar to 100 mJ/mol K-2.

Cross polarisation is extensively used in solid state NMR for enhancing signals of nuclei with low gyromagnetic ratio. However, the use of the method for providing quantitative structural and dynamics information is limited. This arises due to the fact that the mechanism which is responsible for cross polarisation namely, the dipolar interaction, has a long range and is also anisotropic. In nematic liquid crystals these limitations are easily overcome since molecules orient in a magnetic field. The uniaxial ordering of the molecules essentially removes problems associated with the angular dependence of the interactions encountered in powdered solids. The molecular motion averages out intermolecular dipolar interaction, while retaining partially averaged intramolecular interaction. In this article the use of cross polarisation for obtaining heteronuclear dipolar couplings and hence the order parameters of liquid crystals is presented. Several modifications to the basic experiment were considered and their utility illustrated. A method for obtaining proton-proton dipolar couplings, by utilizing cross polarisation from the dipolar reservoir, is also presented.
