The hopping conductivity of granular metals is known to be of the form sigma varies as exp (-(T0/T)12/) in the temperature range 20Kconductance method as developed in the context of the variable range hopping mechanism of conduction in amorphous systems, is discussed. Use is made of the empirical fact that the ratio of intergrain separation and grain size is nearly constant for macroscopically homogeneous samples. It is also assumed that the hopping of electrons is predominantly between nearest neighbours. Extension of the treatment to thin films and comparison with previous theoretical work is briefly discussed.

3-Picoline-N-oxide (3-PicNO) complexes of rare-earth bromides of the formulaMBr3(3-PicNO)8–n·nH2O wheren=0 forM=La, Pr, Nd, Sm Tb or Y andn=2 forM=Ho or Yb have been prepared. Infrared and proton NMR studies indicate that the coordination of the ligand is through oxygen. Conductance data in acetonitrile suggest that two bromide ions are coordinated to the metal ion. Proton NMR studies suggest a bicapped dodecahedral arrangement of the ligands around the metal ion in solution for Pr(III), Nd(III) and Tb(III) complexes.

Complexes of lanthanide iodides with 4-methylpyridine-1-oxide and 2-methylpyridine-1-oxide of the formulae Ln(4-MePyO)8I3.xH2O (x=0 or 2) and Ln(2-MePyO)5I3.xH2O (x=0, 1 or 3) have been prepared and characterized by analyses, conductance, infrared and proton NMR data. Infrared spectra of the complexes indicate that the coordination of the ligand to the metal ion takes place through the oxygen of the N-O group of the ligand. Proton NMR data for the paramagnetic complexes indicate that both contact and pseudocontact interactions are responsible for the isotropic shifts. Proton NMR spectra of the 2-methylpyridine-1-oxide complexes indicate a restricted rotation of the ligand about the N-O group.

Using the critical percolation conductance method the energy-dependent diffusion coefficient associated with thermally assisted transfer of the R1 line excitation between single Cr3+ ions with strain-induced randomness has been calculated in the 4A2 to E(2E) transition energies. For localized states sufficiently far away from the mobility edge the energy transfer is dominated by dipolar interactions, while very close to the mobility edge it is determined by short-range exchange interactions. Using the above energy-dependent diffusion coefficient a macroscopic diffusion equation is solved for the rate of light emission by Cr3+ ion-pair traps to which single-ion excitations are transferred. The dipolar mechanism leads to good agreement with recent measurements of the pair emission rate by Koo et al. (Phys. Rev. Lett., vol.35, p.1669 (1975)) right up to the mobility edge.

Adducts of lanthanide perchlorates with 4-nitro and 4-chloro pyridine-Noxides (4-NPNO and 4-CPNO respectively) have been synthesised for the first time and characterised by analysis, electrolytic conductance, infrared, proton-NMR and electronic spectral data. The complexes are of the compositions Ln2(NPNO)15 (ClO4)6 (Ln = La, Pr, Nd and Gd), Tb(NPNO), (C1O4)6), Ln2(NPNO)13 (C1O4)6) (Ln = Dy, Ho, and Yb); Ln (CPNO)8 (C104)3) (Ln = La, Pr, Nd, Tb, Dy, Ho and Yb) and Ln(CPNO), (C1O4)3) (Ln = Sm and Gd). Conductivity and IR data provide evidence for the non-coordinated nature of the perchlorate groups. IR and NMR spectra suggest coordinationvia the oxygen of the N-oxide group. Electronic spectral shapes of the Nd+3 and Ho+3 complexes are interpreted in terms of eight-and seven-coordinate environments in the case of 4-NPNO complexes and eight-coordination in the case of 4-CPNO complexes. IR data indicate bridged structure in NPNO complexes of lanthanides other than Tb.

A survey of the literature on lanthanide coordination compounds reveals that ligands involving ether oxygens as donor atoms have received very little attention [ 11. Only recently have the complexes of lanthanides with cyclic polyethers been characterized [l-3]. We report in this communication that interaction of rareearth perchlorates with two new ligands namely N,N,N’,N’-tetramethyl-u-carboxamido-Oanisamide (TMCA) and N,N’-di-t-butyl-crcarboxamido- 0-anisamide (DTBCA). The two ligands are potentially tridentate possessing two amide moieties and an ether linkage in between. The isolated complexes have been characterized by analysis, electrolytic conductance, infrared and electronic spectra. The ‘H and “C NMR spectra for the diamagnetic La3+ and Y3+ complexes are also discussed.

The cation-Cl- cotransporter (CCC) family comprises of Na+-Cl- cotransporter (NCC), Na+-K+-2Cl- cotransporters (NKCC1-2), and four K+-Cl- cotransporters (KCC1-4). These proteins are involved in several physiological activities, such as cell volume regulation. In neuronal tissues, NKCC1 and KCC2 are important in determining the intracellular Cl- levels and hence the neuronal responses to inhibitory neurotransmitters GABA and glycine. One aim of the work was to elucidate the roles for CCC isoforms in the control of nervous system development. KCC2 mRNA was shown to be developmentally up-regulated and follow neuronal maturation, whereas NKCC1 and KCC4 transcripts were highly expressed in the proliferative zones of subcortical regions. KCC1 and KCC3 mRNA displayed low expression throughout the embryogenesis. These expression profiles suggest a role for CCC isoforms in maturation of synaptic responses and in the regulation of neuronal proliferation during embryogenesis. The major aim of this work was to study the biological consequences of KCC2-deficiency in the adult CNS, by generating transgenic mice retaining 15-20% of normal KCC2 levels. In addition, by using these mice as a tool for in vivo pharmacological analysis, we investigated the requirements for KCC2 in tonic versus phasic GABAA receptor-mediated inhibition. KCC2-deficient mice displayed normal reproduction and life span, but showed several behavioral abnormalities, including increased anxiety-like behavior, impaired performance in water maze, alterations in nociceptive processing, and increased seizure susceptibility. In contrast, the mice displayed apparently normal spontaneous locomotor activity and motor coordination. Pharmacological analysis of KCC2-deficient mice revealed reduced sensititivity to diazepam, but normal gaboxadol-induced sedation, neurosteroid hypnosis and alcohol-induced motor impairment. Electrophysiological recordings from CA1-CA3 subregions of the hippocampus showed that KCC2 deficiency affected the reversal potentials of both the phasic and tonic GABA currents, and that the tonic conductance was not affected. The results suggest that requirement for KCC2 in GABAergic neurotransmission may differ among several functional systems in the CNS, which is possibly due to the more critical role of KCC2 activity in phasic compared to tonic GABAergic inhibition.

The rare autosomal recessive disease congenital chloride diarrhea (CLD) is caused by mutations in the solute carrier family 26 member 3 (SLC26A3) gene on chromosome 7q22.3-31.1. SLC26A3 encodes for an apical epithelial chloride-bicarbonate exchanger, the intestinal loss of which leads to profuse chloride-rich diarrhea, and a tendency to hypochloremic and hypokalemic metabolic alkalosis. Although untreated CLD is usually lethal in early infancy, the development of salt substitution therapy with NaCl and KCl in the late 1960s made the disease treatable. While the salt substitution allows normal childhood growth and development in CLD, data on long-term outcome have remained unclarified. One of the world s highest incidences of CLD 1:30 000 to 1:40 000 occurs in Finland, and CLD is part of the Finnish disease heritage. We utilized a unique sample of Finnish patients to characterize the long-term outcome of CLD. Another purpose of this study was to search for novel manifestations of CLD based on the extraintestinal expression of the SLC26A3 gene. This study on a sample of 36 patients (ages 10-38) shows that the long-term outcome of treated CLD is favorable. In untreated or poorly treated cases, however, chronic contraction and metabolic imbalance may lead to renal injury and even to renal transplantation. Our results demonstrate a low-level expression of SLC26A3 in the human kidney. Although SLC26A3 may play a minor role in homeostasis, post-transplant recurrence of renal changes shows the unlikelihood of direct transporter modulation in the pathogenesis of CLD-related renal injury. Options to resolve the diarrheal symptoms of CLD have been limited. Unfortunately, our pilot trial indicated the inefficacy of oral butyrate as well. This study reveals novel manifestations of CLD. These include an increased risk for hyperuricemia, inguinal hernias, and probably for intestinal inflammation. The most notable finding of this study is CLD-associated male subfertility. This involves a low concentration of poorly motile spermatozoa with abnormal morphology, high seminal plasma chloride with a low pH, and a tendency to form spermatoceles. That SLC26A3 immunoexpression appeared at multiple sites of the male reproductive tract in part together with the main interacting proteins cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) and sodium-hydrogen exchanger 3 (NHE3) suggests novel sites for the cooperation of these proteins. As evidence of the cooperation, defects occurring in any of these transporters are associated with reduced male fertility. Together with a finding of high sweat chloride in CLD, this study provides novel data on extraintestinal actions of the SLC26A3 gene both in the male reproductive tract and in the sweat gland. These results provide the basis for future studies regarding the role of SLC26A3 in different tissues, especially in the male reproductive tract. Fortunately, normal spermatogenesis in CLD is likely to make artificial reproductive technologies to treat infertility and even make unassisted reproduction possible.

Data on the influence of unilateral vocal fold paralysis on breathing, especially other than information obtained by spirometry, are relatively scarce. Even less is known about the effect of its treatment by vocal fold medialization. Consequently, there was a need to study the issue by combining multiple instruments capable of assessing airflow dynamics and voice. This need was emphasized by a recently developed medialization technique, autologous fascia injection; its effects on breathing have not previously been investigated. A cohort of ten patients with unilateral vocal fold paralysis was studied before and after autologous fascia injection by using flow-volume spirometry, body plethysmography and acoustic analysis of breathing and voice. Preoperative results were compared with those of ten healthy controls. A second cohort of 11 subjects with unilateral vocal fold paralysis was studied pre- and postoperatively by using flow-volume spirometry, impulse oscillometry, acoustic analysis of voice, voice handicap index and subjective assessment of dyspnoea. Preoperative peak inspiratory flow and specific airway conductance were significantly lower and airway resistance was significantly higher in the patients than in the healthy controls (78% vs. 107%, 73% vs. 116% and 182% vs. 125% of predicted; p = 0.004, p = 0.004 and p = 0.026, respectively). Patients had a higher root mean square of spectral power of tracheal sounds than controls, and three of them had wheezes as opposed to no wheezing in healthy subjects. Autologous fascia injection significantly improved acoustic parameters of the voice in both cohorts and voice handicap index in the latter cohort, indicating that this procedure successfully improved voice in unilateral vocal fold paralysis. Peak inspiratory flow decreased significantly as a consequence of this procedure (from 4.54 ± 1.68 l to 4.21 ± 1.26 l, p = 0.03, in pooled data of both cohorts), but no change occurred in the other variables of flow-volume spirometry, body-plethysmography and impulse oscillometry. Eight of the ten patients studied by acoustic analysis of breathing had wheezes after vocal fold medialization compared with only three patients before the procedure, and the numbers of wheezes per recorded inspirium and expirium increased significantly (from 0.02 to 0.42 and from 0.03 to 0.36; p = 0.028 and p = 0.043, respectively). In conclusion, unilateral vocal fold paralysis was observed to disturb forced breathing and also to cause some signs of disturbed tidal breathing. Findings of flow volume spirometry were consistent with variable extra-thoracic obstruction. Vocal fold medialization by autologous fascia injection improved the quality of the voice in patients with unilateral vocal fold paralysis, but also decreased peak inspiratory flow and induced wheezing during tidal breathing. However, these airflow changes did not appear to cause significant symptoms in patients.

A macrocyclic hydrazone Schiff base was synthesized by reacting 1,4-dicarbonyl phenyl dihydrazide with 2,6-diformyl-4-methyl phenol and a series of metal complexes with this new Schiff base were synthesized by reaction with Co(II), Ni(II) and Cu(II) metal salts. The Schiff base and its complexes have been characterized by elemental analyses, IR, H-1 NMR, UV-vis, FAB mass, ESR spectra, fluorescence, thermal, magnetic and molar conductance data. The analytical data reveal that the Co(II), Ni(II) and Cu(II) complexes possess 2:1 metal-ligand ratios. All the complexes are non-electrolytes in DMF and DMSO due to their low molar conductance values. Infrared spectral data suggest that the hydrazone Schiff base behaves as a hexadentate ligand with NON NON donor sequence towards the metal ions. The ESR spectral data shows that the metal-ligand bond has considerable covalent character. The electrochemical behavior of the copper(II) complex was investigated by cyclic voltammetry. The Schiff base and its complexes have also been screened for their antibacterial (Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Shigella dysentery, Micrococcus, Bacillus subtilis, Bacillus cereus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa) and antifungal activities (Aspergillus niger, Penicillium and Candida albicans) by MIC method. The brine shrimp bioassay was also carried out to study their in-vitro cytotoxic properties. (C) 2009 Elsevier Masson SAS. All rights reserved.

We report the destabilization of the charge ordered insulating (COI) state in a localized region of Pr0.63Ca0.37MnO3 single crystal by current injection using a scanning tunneling microscope tip. This leads to controlled phase separation and formation of localized metallic nanoislands in the COI matrix which have been detected by local tunneling conductance mapping. The metallic regions thus created persist even after reducing the injected current to lower values. The original conductance state can be restored by injecting a current of similar magnitude but of opposite polarity. We thus achieve reversible nanoscale phase separation that gives rise to the possibility to "write, read, and erase" nanosized conducting regions in an insulating matrix with high spatial resolution. In this thesis, the solar wind-magnetosphere-ionosphere coupling is studied observationally, with the main focus on the ionospheric currents in the auroral region. The thesis consists of five research articles and an introductory part that summarises the most important results reached in the articles and places them in a wider context within the field of space physics. Ionospheric measurements are provided by the International Monitor for Auroral Geomagnetic Effects (IMAGE) magnetometer network, by the low-orbit CHAllenging Minisatellite Payload (CHAMP) satellite, by the European Incoherent SCATter (EISCAT) radar, and by the Imager for Magnetopause-to-Aurora Global Exploration (IMAGE) satellite. Magnetospheric observations, on the other hand, are acquired from the four spacecraft of the Cluster mission, and solar wind observations from the Advanced Composition Explorer (ACE) and Wind spacecraft. Within the framework of this study, a new method for determining the ionospheric currents from low-orbit satellite-based magnetic field data is developed. In contrast to previous techniques, all three current density components can be determined on a matching spatial scale, and the validity of the necessary one-dimensionality approximation, and thus, the quality of the results, can be estimated directly from the data. The new method is applied to derive an empirical model for estimating the Hall-to-Pedersen conductance ratio from ground-based magnetic field data, and to investigate the statistical dependence of the large-scale ionospheric currents on solar wind and geomagnetic parameters. Equations describing the amount of field-aligned current in the auroral region, as well as the location of the auroral electrojets, as a function of these parameters are derived. Moreover, the mesoscale (10-1000 km) ionospheric equivalent currents related to two magnetotail plasma sheet phenomena, bursty bulk flows and flux ropes, are studied. Based on the analysis of 22 events, the typical equivalent current pattern related to bursty bulk flows is established. For the flux ropes, on the other hand, only two conjugate events are found. As the equivalent current patterns during these two events are not similar, it is suggested that the ionospheric signatures of a flux rope depend on the orientation and the length of the structure, but analysis of additional events is required to determine the possible ionospheric connection of flux ropes.

Scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy studies were carried out on single crystals of colossal magnetoresistive manganite Pr0.68Pb0.32MnO3 at different temperatures in order to probe their spatial homogeneity across the metal-insulator transition temperature TM-I(similar to 255 K). A metallic behavior of the local conductance was observed for temperatures T < TM-I. Zero bias conductance (dI/dV)v=(0), which is directly proportional to the local surface density of states at the Fermi level, shows a single distribution at temperatures T < 200 K suggesting a homogeneous electronic phase at low temperatures. In a narrow temperature window of 200 K < T < TM-I, however, an inhomogeneous distribution of (dI/dV)v=(0) has been observed. This result gives evidence for phase separation in the transition region in this compound.
