Pensar el Estado sigue presentando cierta urgencia en Argentina pues no ha dejado de tener una gran centralidad como interlocutor de las demandas sociales. Específicamente, procuro recuperar los aportes sustantivos de algunas pensadoras feministas. En particular, y aún a riesgo de que mi recorte pueda encasillarse en el de la colonialidad discursiva, retomaré las contribuciones de la politóloga inglesa Carole Pateman y la jurista estadounidense Catharine MacKinnon. Luego, estableceré algunas consideraciones sobre las derivaciones de sus propuestas y la forma en que otras autoras han aportado con particular eje en la ciudadanía tanto en su faz activa como pasiva. Finalmente, volveré a pensar nuestra práctica y nuestra teoría en el proceso de devenir feminista...

Estrategias resilientes ante la situación adversa de los desahucios

Los desahucios en España se han convertido en los últimos años en un fenómeno social emergente, de interés tanto para la investigación como para la intervención de los profesionales de la acción social. Aun así, no existen estudios suficientes relacionados con esta situación adversa, y menos aún centrados en las respuestas resilientes que las personas son capaces de ofrecer ante ella. Con el objetivo de identificar los factores internos y externos que se presentan en la experiencia de las familias que viven procesos de desahucios y que les están permitiendo desarrollar estrategias resilientes ante dicha adversidad, se lleva a cabo la presente investigación en la que participan 20 sujetos, pertenecientes a familias que acuden a la Plataforma de Afectados por las Hipotecas (PAH) de Málaga. A los participantes se les realiza una entrevista semi-estructurada y a través de ellas se han podido definir las características socio-familiares de las personas afectadas, las diferentes estrategias de afrontamiento desarrolladas, las principales fuentes de apoyo con las que han contado, así como las preocupaciones que les han acompañado. Los resultados muestran los principales factores internos y externos que están presenten en las estrategias resilientes que han desarrollado las familias afectadas por los desahucios durante el proceso vivido y destacan como fuente de apoyo informacional a la PAH. Se concluye con la necesidad de continuar con esta línea de investigación para tratar de diseñar intervenciones que refuercen y fomenten las estrategias de afrontamiento ante la situación adversa del desahucio.

The prize honors the memory of David Cushing, Founding Editor of Journal of Plankton Research. It is awarded annually for the best paper by an early career stage scientist published in the journal during the previous year. The prize helps foster the interesting and high-quality papers by young scientists that David Cushing so actively supported. The 2015 David Cushing Prize has been awarded to Bingzhang Chen for his paper, “Patterns of thermal limits of phytoplankton” (J. Plankton Res. 37, 285–292) Bingzhang Chen obtained his PhD with a major in Marine Environmental Science at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology under the supervision of Dr Hongbin Liu in 2008. He also worked with Dr Zoe Finkel and Dr Andrew Irwin in Mount Allison University, Canada, from 2009 to 2010. During this time, he started to learn the R language and entered the field of data analysis and programming. This experience has been proved very useful for his later work.

Shirley Winifred Jeffrey 1930–2014

Australian scientist Shirley Jeffrey was a pioneer in oceanographic research, identifying the then theoretical chlorophyll c, and was a worldwide leader in the application of pigment methods in quantifying phytoplankton as the foundation of the oceanic food supply. Her research paved the way for the successful application of microalgae in aquaculture around the world. Jeffrey earned bachelor's and master's degrees at University of Sydney, majoring in microbiology and biochemistry, followed by a PhD from the King's College London Hospital Medical School. Returning to Sydney, she was hired by the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) to research chlorophyll c. Following this successful effort, she became a research fellow at the University of California, Berkeley from 1962 to 1964. She then became affiliated with the Scientific Committee on Oceanic Research. After a 1973 sabbatical at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in San Diego, she returned to CSIRO, where she spent the rest of her career.

¿Fue la crisis política del Occidente musulmán del siglo XIII debida a un cambio climático? Una aproximación histórica al fin del Periodo Cálido Medieval

Durante el siglo XIII se produjo una sucesión de revueltas que supuso la desaparición del Imperio almohade y su sustitución por poderes regionales en al-Andalus, el Magreb y el Magreb al-Aqsà. La historiografía ha presentado el surgimiento y pugna entre estos poderes como un fenómeno social, político e, incluso, cultural y religioso, con el que se ha podido explicar su aniquilación o marginalización. Este trabajo pretende contextualizar los hechos desde una perspectiva medioambiental, de forma que la desintegración del califato almohade, el surgimiento de aquellos poderes y la progresión de los reinos cristianos en la península ibérica puedan entenderse desde una visión global de cambio climático y una posible crisis agrícola.

Blurred Lines: Performance Enhancement, Common Mental Disorders and Referral in the U.K. Athletic Population

Through the awareness-raising efforts of several high-profile current and former athletes, the issue of common mental disorders (CMD) in this population is gaining increasing attention from researchers and practitioners alike. Yet the prevalence is unclear and most likely, under-reported. Whilst the characteristics of the sporting environment may generate CMD within the athletic population, it also may exacerbate pre-existing conditions, and hence it is not surprising that sport psychology and sport science practitioners are anecdotally reporting increased incidences of athletes seeking support for CMDs. In a population where there are many barriers to reporting and seeking help for CMD, due in part to the culture of the high performance sporting environment, anecdotal reports suggest that those athletes asking for help are approaching personnel who they are most comfortable talking to. In some cases, this may be a sport scientist, the sport psychologist or sport psychology consultant. Among personnel in the sporting domain, there is a perception that the sport psychologist or sport psychology consultant is best placed to assist athletes seeking assistance for CMD. However, sport psychology as a profession is split by two competing philosophical perspectives; one of which suggests that sport psychologists should work exclusively with athletes on performance enhancement, and the other views the athlete more holistically and accepts that their welfare may directly impact on their performance. To add further complication, the development of the profession of sport psychology varies widely between countries, meaning that practice in this field is not always clearly defined. This article examines case studies that illustrate the blurred lines in applied sport psychology practice, highlighting challenges with the process of referral in the U.K. athletic population. The article concludes with suggestions for ensuring the field of applied sport psychology is continually evolving and reconfiguring to ensure that it continues to meet the demands of its clients.

Constructions of Clinical Psychology in Adult Mental Health: A Discursive Thematic Analysis

In face of the current economic-political changes facing the UK and its State institutions and of the new evidence about the impact of social inequality on human distress, this study attempts to understand the increasing practice of delivering psychological therapy by the British clinical psychology profession. A review of the critical histories of the profession in the UK identified the need for a more detailed study of the “history of the present” to reveal the discursive operations that construct professional practice. A discursive thematic analysis (DTA) based on the theoretical concepts of the late post-modern scholar Michel Foucault was used to explore public available documents produced by British clinical psychologists between 2010 and 2014. Two dominant professional discursive themes were identified: alternative and leadership. These themes were found to be supported by the discursive sub-themes of applied science, well-being, Cognitivism and therapy which align the aspiration of the profession with those of the State. The tension between the applied scientist and the therapist role - specifically the need to establish simultaneously the profession’s scientific credibility and its therapeutic abilities in order to respond to market pressures – showed recurrences of the conflicts of the early history of professionalization of clinical psychology. The positioning of clinical psychology against the use of functional psychiatric diagnosis and the challenges and opportunities identified by the opening of the NHS market to ‘any willing provider’ revealed how professional discourses operate to maintain the status quo. This study recommends that the socio-historical construction of the profession should be investigated further, in particular through the subjugated discourse identified here

Images of Africa and the resilience of ignorance

Images about Africa in the northern hemisphere are generally negative and pessimistic. In spite of instant global communication, why have these images persisted till date? This contribution shall revisit these perceptions and the images embodying them to unearth the motivations and rationale. The central argument, based on some narratives and experiences, is that ignorance feeds these images and stereotypes. Furthermore, positionality of non-African experts and some groups of African scholars and activists contribute to this culture of ignorance and paternalism. The contribution shall end with an ethical evaluation of the persistence of the images and the extent of moral responsibility of the authors and carriers of the racist stereotypes embedded in the images. No presente trabalho procede-se a uma descrição sobre os aspetos considerados mais relevantes relativos à vida e à obra do extraordinário cientista e humanista do século XIX – Louis Pasteur. Contextualiza-se, também, em vários pontos, a sua obra com a de outros cientistas da época, enquadrando os trabalhos por si realizados em descobertas anteriores. Abordam-se os magníficos estudos feitos no âmbito da cristalografia (que muito contribuíram para a moderna estereoquímica) e da fermentação, como um mecanismo utilizado por certos microrganismos para produzir energia na ausência de oxigénio, facto totalmente inédito na época. Explica-se como Pasteur, de uma forma inteligentíssima, conseguiu pôr fim à velha teoria da geração espontânea. Refere-se como surgiu a genial ideia da pasteurização, termo em homenagem ao grande sábio, que veio a modificar toda a indústria do vinho, da cerveja e de tantos outros alimentos, estabelecendo a importância da microbiologia na indústria alimentar. Abordam-se os estudos realizados por Pasteur sobre doenças infeciosas (a pebrina, a cólera das galinhas, o carbúnculo e a raiva), incluindo os espetaculares procedimentos que conduziram à elaboração das primeiras vacinas que ensinaram aos cientistas mais novos a fabricar outras, salvando-se tantas vidas.

Die Erziehungswissenschaft im Vereinigten Königreich: Die erziehungswissenschaftliche Forschungslandschaft im Spiegel der Forschungsevaluation

Der Autor widmet sich der erziehungswissenschaftlichen „Forschungslandschaft im Spiegel der Forschungsevaluation“ im Vereinigten Königreich und stellt Ergebnisse der Research Excellence Framework (REF) vor, eine Forschungsevaluation, die zwischen 2013 und 2014 an allen hochschulischen Einrichtungen im Vereinigten Königreich stattfand. Ein interessantes Ergebnis der referierten REF-Daten ist, dass es keine vollständige Gleichberechtigung zwischen Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftlern in Bezug auf für die Karriere relevante Forschungsmerkmale gibt.
