Nitrones or azomethine-N-oxides are important precursors for the synthesis of several heterocyclic systems. They belong to the allyl anion type 1,3-dipoles and possess unique structural features which make them extraordinarily useful synthons. They behave as 1,3-dipoles in 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reactions and as electrophiles in reactions with organometallic reagents. These are the two basic reactions given by nitrones. Nitrones also act as ‘spin traps’ in which they react with short-lived radicals to furnish stable nitroxide radicals which can be detected and identified by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. Recently SmI2 catalysed reductive cross-coupling reactions of nitrones have gained significant interest in which the reactions are initiated by single electron transfer (SET) to nitrones. Apart from these reactions, nitrones are also known to participate in reactions which are initiated by the nucleophilic attack of nitrone-oxygen. In our group, we have also explored the nucleophilic character of nitrones through various reactions. The results obtained enabled us to develop a novel two-step one-pot strategy for quinolines and indoles - the heterocycles renowned for their pharmacological applications, from nitrones and electron deficient acetylenes. Using dibenzoylacetylene and phenylbenzoylacetylene as dipolarophiles, we could introduce a desired functional group at a predetermined position of the quinolines or indoles to be synthesised. In this context, the thesis entitled “NUCLEOPHILIC ADDITION OF NITRONES TO ELECTRON DEFICIENT ACETYLENES AND RELATED STUDIES” portrays our attempt to expand the scope of our x novel synthetic protocol using ester functionalised acetylenes: dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate (DMAD) and methyl propiolate. The thesis is organised in to five chapters. The first chapter briefly describes the different classes of reactions that nitrone functionality can tolerate. The research problem is defined at the end of this chapter. The second chapter describes the synthesis of different nitrones used for the present study. The optimisation and expansion of scope of the novel strategy towards quinoline synthesis is discussed in the third chapter. The fourth chapter portrays the synthesis of indole-3-carboxylates using the novel strategy. In the fifth chapter, the reaction of N-(2,6-dimethylphenyl) and N-(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)nitrones are discussed. Here we also discuss the mechanistic reinvestigation of Baldwin’s proposal in the isoxazoline-oxazoline rearrangement. The major outcome of the work is given at the end of the thesis. The structural formulae, schemes, tables and figures are numbered chapter-wise since each chapter of the thesis is organized as an independent unit. All new compounds (except two compounds reported in fourth chapter) are fully characterised on the basis of spectral and analytical data and single crystal X-ray analysis on representative examples. O Espanhol é, cada vez mais, uma língua de destaque no panorama mundial. Daí que surja a necessidade de garantir a qualidade e constante aprimoramento do ensino/aprendizagem desta língua. Um dos nossos propósitos, com o presente estudo, foi aprofundar e refletir sobre os conhecimentos dos alunos acerca da diversidade (intra)linguística do Espanhol, promovendo, deste modo, a sua valorização. Elaborámos, como ponto de partida, um enquadramento teórico que sustenta a investigação onde abordamos a dimensão atual do Espanhol e das suas variedades, bem como a questão dos estereótipos relacionada com o ensino das variedades (intra)linguísticas espanholas. De seguida, procedemos à implementação de um estudo de caso, tendo em conta o Espanhol como língua internacional e pluricêntrica, com variedades distintas. O referido estudo apresenta contornos de investigação-ação e foi desenvolvido num agrupamento de escolas da região de Aveiro, no ano letivo 2014/2015. No decurso do nosso projeto, socorremo-nos de diversas técnicas e instrumentos de recolha de dados, nomeadamente um inquérito por questionário e fichas de atividades para identificar e descrever os estereótipos dos alunos. Neste projeto, analisamos os resultados de uma investigação onde destacamos, por um lado, os estereótipos que alunos portugueses, do 8.º ano de escolaridade, têm sobre a realidade da língua espanhola e das suas variedades, no mundo; por outro lado, a presença/ausência dessa diversidade (intra)linguística nos manuais escolares que acompanharam a turma-alvo do estudo. Com base nos resultados obtidos, foi realizada ainda uma sessão de sensibilização às variedades do Espanhol. Os resultados demonstram que os manuais escolares analisados contêm visões estereotipadas e redutoras sobre a diversidade linguística espanhola, sobrevalorizando, em certa medida, a norma peninsular. Os dados recolhidos através do inquérito por questionário, permitiram-nos concluir que os alunos possuíam visões estereotipadas sobre o Espanhol e as suas variedades. No entanto, mediante a sessão de sensibilização para a valorização da diversidade linguística espanhola, concluímos que foi criado um espaço de reflexão que permitisse quer a reconstrução de estereótipos quer ainda um espaço de diálogo e debate coletivo sobre como as diferenças da língua a podem enriquecer.

When a liquid is irradiated with ultrasound, acoustic cavitation (the formation, growth, and implosive collapse of bubbles in liquids irradiated with ultrasound) generally occurs. This is the phenomenon responsible for the driving of chemical reactions (sonochemistry) and the emission of light (sonoluminescence). The implosive collapse of bubbles in liquids results in an enormous concentration of sound energy into compressional heating of the bubble contents. Therefore, extreme chemical and physical conditions are generated during cavitation. The study of multibubble sonoluminescence (MBSL) and single-bubble sonoluminescence (SBSL) in exotic liquids such as sulfuric acid (H2SO4) and phosphoric acid (H3PO4) leads to useful information regarding the intracavity conditions during bubble collapse. Distinct sonoluminescing bubble populations were observed from the intense orange and blue-white emissions by doping H2SO4 and H3PO4 with sodium salts, which provides the first experimental evidence for the injected droplet model over the heated-shell model for cavitation. Effective emission temperatures measured based on excited OH• and PO• emission indicate that there is a temperature inhomogeneity during MBSL in 85% H3PO4. The formation of a temperature inhomogeneity is due to the existence of different cavitating bubble populations: asymmetric collapsing bubbles contain liquid droplets and spherical collapsing bubbles do not contain liquid droplets. Strong molecular emission from SBSL in 65% H3PO4 have been obtained and used as a spectroscopic probe to determine the cavitation temperatures. It is found that the intracavity temperatures are dependent on the applied acoustic pressures and the thermal conductivities of the dissolved noble gases. The chemical and physical effects of ultrasound can be used for materials synthesis. Highly reactive species, including HO2•, H•, and OH• (or R• after additives react with OH•), are formed during aqueous sonolysis as a consequence of the chemical effects of ultrasound. Reductive species can be applied to synthesis of water-soluble fluorescent silver nanoclusters in the presence of a suitable stabilizer or capping agent. The optical and fluorescent properties of the Ag nanoclusters can be easily controlled by the synthetic conditions such as the sonication time, the stoichiometry of the carboxylate groups to Ag+, and the polymer molecular weight. The chemical and physical effects of ultrasound can be combined to prepare polymer functionalized graphenes from graphites and a reactive solvent, styrene. The physical effects of ultrasound are used to exfoliate graphites to graphenes while the chemical effects of ultrasound are used to induce the polymerization of styrene which can then functionalize graphene sheets via radical coupling. The prepared polymer functionalized graphenes are highly stable in common organic solvents like THF, CHCl3, and DMF. Ultrasonic spray pyrolysis (USP) is used to prepare porous carbon spheres using energetic alkali propiolates as the carbon precursors. In this synthesis, metal salts are generated in situ, introducing porous structures into the carbon spheres. When different alkali salts or their mixtures are used as the precursor, carbon spheres with different morphologies and structures are obtained. The different precursor decomposition pathways are responsible for the observed structural difference. Such prepared carbon materials have high surface area and are thermally stable, making them potentially useful for catalytic supports, adsorbents, or for other applications by integrating other functional materials into their pores.

Certains philosophes affirment que les relations causales sont fondées sur les lois de la nature. Cette conception cadre mal avec la réalité des sciences biomédicales et des sciences humaines. Pour se rapprocher de la pratique réelle des diverses sciences, James Woodward propose une conception de la causalité et de l’explication causale fondée sur une relation beaucoup moins exigeante que celle de loi de la nature, qu’il appelle l’invariance. Le but de ce mémoire est de présenter le concept d’invariance et les autres concepts causaux qui s’y rattachent et, d’identifier certaines difficultés, dans le but de cerner l’usage approprié de cette famille de concepts. La conception causale de Woodward suppose que le but de la recherche des causes est pratique plutôt que simplement épistémique : il s’agit pour les agents de s’appuyer sur les causes pour modifier les phénomènes. Cette conception est également non-réductive; elle utilise des contrefactuels et reflète les méthodes expérimentales des diverses sciences. La cohérence de cette conception avec les généralisations causales réelles des sciences fait en sorte qu’elle abandonne l’objectif d’universalité rattaché à la notion de loi de la nature, en faveur d’un objectif de fiabilité temporaire. De plus, comme le critère d’invariance est peu exigeant, d’autres critères doivent lui être ajoutés pour identifier, parmi les relations causales (c’est-à-dire invariantes), les relations les plus susceptibles d’être employées pour modifier les phénomènes de façon fiable.

We develop some new techniques to calculate the Schur indicator for self-dual irreducible Langlands quotients of the principal series representations. Using these techniques we derive some new formulas for the Schur indicator and the real-quaternionic indicator. We make progress towards developing an algorithm to decide whether or not two root data are isomorphic. When the derived group has cyclic center, we solve the isomorphism problem completely. An immediate consequence is a clean and precise classification theorem for connected complex reductive groups whose derived groups have cyclic center.

In the Guaymas Basin, the presence of cold seeps and hydrothermal vents in close proximity, similar sedimentary settings and comparable depths offers a unique opportunity to assess and compare the functioning of these deep-sea chemosynthetic ecosystems. The food webs of five seep and four vent assemblages were studied using stable carbon and nitrogen isotope analyses. Although the two ecosystems shared similar potential basal sources, their food webs differed: seeps relied predominantly on methanotrophy and thiotrophy via the Calvin-Benson-Bassham (CBB) cycle and vents on petroleum-derived organic matter and thiotrophy via the CBB and reductive tricarboxylic acid (rTCA) cycles. In contrast to symbiotic species, the heterotrophic fauna exhibited high trophic flexibility among assemblages, suggesting weak trophic links to the metabolic diversity of chemosynthetic primary producers. At both ecosystems, food webs did not appear to be organised through predator-prey links but rather through weak trophic relationships among co-occurring species. Examples of trophic or spatial niche differentiation highlighted the importance of species-sorting processes within chemosynthetic ecosystems. Variability in food web structure, addressed through Bayesian metrics, revealed consistent trends across ecosystems. Food-web complexity significantly decreased with increasing methane concentrations, a common proxy for the intensity of seep and vent fluid fluxes. Although high fluid-fluxes have the potential to enhance primary productivity, they generate environmental constraints that may limit microbial diversity, colonisation of consumers and the structuring role of competitive interactions, leading to an overall reduction of food-web complexity and an increase in trophic redundancy. Heterogeneity provided by foundation species was identified as an additional structuring factor. According to their biological activities, foundation species may have the potential to partly release the competitive pressure within communities of low fluid-flux habitats. Finally, ecosystem functioning in vents and seeps was highly similar despite environmental differences (e.g. physico-chemistry, dominant basal sources) suggesting that ecological niches are not specifically linked to the nature of fluids. This comparison of seep and vent functioning in the Guaymas basin thus provides further supports to the hypothesis of continuity among deep-sea chemosynthetic ecosystems.

On treatment with indium metal in MeOH–THF, trityl groups undergo reductive removal from 1H-protected tetrazoles (including aliphatic, aromatic, and heteroaromatic substituents), affording the corresponding free tetrazoles in excellent yields, without any decomposition of the tetrazole ring or reduction of any other group.

The photochemistry of pesticides triadimenol and triadimefon was studied on cellulose and beta-cyclodextrin (beta-CD) in controlled and natural conditions, using diffuse reflectance techniques and chromatographic analysis. The photochemistry of triadimenol occurs from the chlorophenoxyl moiety, while the photodegradation of triadimefon also involves the carbonyl group. The formation of 4-chlorophenoxyl radical is one of the major reaction pathways for both pesticides and leads to 4-chlorophenol. Triadimenol also undergoes photooxidation and dechlorination, leading to triadimefon and dechlorinated triadimenol, respectively. The other main reaction process of triadimefon involves alpha-cleavage from the carbonyl group, leading to decarbonylated compounds. Triadimenol undergoes photodegradation at 254 nm but was found to be stable at 313 nm, while triadimefon degradates in both conditions. Both pesticides undergo photochemical decomposition under solar radiation, being the initial degradation of rate per unit area of triadimefon 1 order of magnitude higher than the observed for triadimenol in both supports. The degradation rates of the pesticides were somewhat lower in beta-CD than on cellulose. Photoproduct distribution of triadimenol and triadimefon is similar for the different irradiation conditions, indicating an intramolecular energy transfer from the chlorophenoxyl moiety to the carbonyl group in the latter pesticide.

Tetrachloroethene (PCE) and trichloroethene (TCE) form dense non-aqueous phase liquids (DNAPLs), which are persistent groundwater contaminants. DNAPL dissolution can be "bioenhanced" via dissolved contaminant biodegradation at the DNAPL-water interface. This research hypothesized that: (1) competitive interactions between different dehalorespiring strains can significantly impact the bioenhancement effect, and extent of PCE dechlorination; and (2) hydrodynamics will affect the outcome of competition and the potential for bioenhancement and detoxification. A two-dimensional coupled flowtransport model was developed, with a DNAPL pool source and multiple microbial species. In the scenario presented, Dehalococcoides mccartyi 195 competes with Desulfuromonas michiganensis for the electron acceptors PCE and TCE. Simulations under biostimulation and low velocity (vx) conditions suggest that the bioenhancement with Dsm. michiganensis alone was modestly increased by Dhc. mccartyi 195. However, the presence of Dhc. mccartyi 195 enhanced the extent of PCE transformation. Hydrodynamic conditions impacted the results by changing the dominant population under low and high vx conditions.

The purpose of this thesis was to contribute to a dialogue that considers the relationship between history, literature, and empathy as a literary affect. Specifically, I explored sites of literature’s transformative potential as it relates to cultural studies and the ethics of deconstruction. Via a deconstructive, post-colonial reading of Toni Morrison’s Beloved and Junot Díaz’s The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, I considered how subjects in our current socio-political moment can feel history. Emerging from a post-structurally mediated engagement with history, signification, and feeling, I argued that empathy, as it is contentiously presented in the context of deconstruction, is not necessarily a reductive or essentialist approach towards relating or “being-with” an-other. Instead, I proposed that the act of reading historiographical novels that take constructions of the Atlantic Slave Trade to task might generate an affective empathy, which could in turn engender a more empathetic relationality and way of being-in-the-world.

Résumé : Les transferts d’électrons photo-induits et d’énergie jouent un rôle primordial dans un grand nombre de processus photochimiques et photobiologiques, comme la respiration ou la photosynthèse. Une très grande quantité de systèmes à liaisons covalentes ont été conçus pour copier ces processus de transferts. Cependant, les progrès sont, en grande partie, limités par les difficultés rencontrées dans la synthèse de nouveaux couples de types donneurs-accepteurs. Récemment, des espèces utilisant des liaisons non-covalentes, comme les liaisons hydrogènes, les interactions [pi]-[pi], les liaisons de coordination métal-ligands ou encore les interactions électrostatiques sont le centre d’un nouvel intérêt du fait qu’ils soient plus faciles à synthétiser et à gérer pour obtenir des comportements de transferts d’électrons ou d’énergie plus flexibles et sélectifs. C’est dans cette optique que le travail de cette thèse a été mené, i.e. de concevoir des composés auto-assemblés avec des porphyrines et un cluster de palladium pour l’étude des transferts d’électrons photo-induits et d’énergie. Cette thèse se divise en quatre parties principales. Dans la première section, le chapitre 3, deux colorants porphyriniques, soit le 5-(4-carboxylphényl)-10, 15, 20-tristolyl(porphyrinato)zinc(II) (MCP, avec Na+ comme contre-ion) et 5, 15-bis(4-carboxylphényl)-15, 20-bistolyl(porphyrinato)zinc(II) (DCP, avec Na+ comme contre-ion) ont été utilisés comme donneurs d’électrons, et le [Pd3(dppm)3(CO)]2+ ([Pd32+], dppm = (Ph2P)2CH2, PF6‾ est le contre-ion) a été choisi comme accepteur d’électrons. La structure de l’assemblage [Pd32+]•••porphyrine a été élucidée par l’optimisation des géométries à l’aide de calculs DFT. La spectroscopie d’absorption transitoire (TAS) montre la vitesse de transferts d’électrons la plus rapide (< 85 fs, temps inférieurs à la limite de détection) jamais enregistrée pour ce type de système (porphyrine-accepteur auto-assemblés). Généralement, ces processus sont de l’ordre de l’échelle de la ps-ns. Cette vitesse est comparable aux plus rapides transferts d’électrons rapportés dans le cas de systèmes covalents de type porphyrine-accepteur rapide (< 85 fs, temps inférieurs à la limite de détection). Ce transfert d’électrons ultra-rapide (ket > 1.2 × 1013 s-1) se produit à l’état énergétique S1 des colorants dans une structure liée directement par des interactions ioniques, ce qui indique qu’il n’est pas nécessaire d’avoir de forts liens ou une géométrie courbée entre le donneur et l’accepteur. Dans une deuxième section, au chapitre 4, nous avons étudié en profondeur l’effet de l’utilisation de porphyrines à systèmes π-étendus sur le comportement des transferts d’électrons. Le colorant 9, 18, 27, 36-tétrakis-meso-(4-carboxyphényl)tétrabenzoporphyrinatozinc(II) (TCPBP, avec Na+ comme contre-ion) a été sélectionné comme candidat, et le 5, 10, 15, 20-tétrakis-meso-(4-carboxyphényl)porphyrineatozinc(II) (TCPP, avec Na+ comme contre-ion) a aussi été utilisé à des fins de comparaisons. TCPBP et TCPP ont, tous deux, été utilisés comme donneurs d’électrons pour fabriquer des assemblages supramoléculaires avec le cluster [Pd32+] comme accepteur d’électrons. Les calculs DFT ont été réalisés pour expliquer les structures de ces assemblages. Dans les conditions expérimentales, ces assemblages sont composés principalement d’une porphyrine avec 4 équivalents de clusters. Ces systèmes ont aussi été investigués par des mesures de quenching (perte de luminescence), par électrochimie et par d’autres techniques. Les transferts d’électrons (< 85 fs; temps inférieurs à la limite de détection) étaient aussi observés, de façon similaire aux assemblages MCP•••[Pd32+] et [Pd32+]•••DCP•••[Pd32+]. Les résultats nous indiquent que la modification de la structure de la porphyrine vers la tétrabenzoporphyrine ne semble pas influencer le comportement des cinétiques de transferts d’électrons (aller ou retour). Dans la troisième section, le chapitre 5, nous avons synthétisé la porphyrine hautement [pi]-conjuguée: 9, 18, 27, 36-tétra-(4-carboxyphényléthynyl)tétrabenzoporphyrinatozinc(II) (TCPEBP, avec Na+ comme contre-ion) par des fonctionnalisations en positions meso- et β, β-, qui présente un déplacement vers le rouge de la bande de Soret et des bandes Q. TCPEBP était utilisé comme donneur d’électrons pour fabriquer des motifs supramoléculaires avec le [Pd32+] comme accepteur d’électrons. Des expériences en parallèle ont été menées en utilisant la 5, 10, 15, 20-tétra-(4-carboxyphényl)éthynylporphyrinatozinc(II) (TCPEP, avec Na+ comme contre-ion). Des calculs DFT et TDDFT ont été réalisés pour de nouveau déterminer de façon théorique les structures de ces systèmes. Les constantes d’association pour les assemblages TCPEBP•••[Pd32+]x sont les plus élevées parmi tous les assemblages entre des porphyrines et le cluster de palladium rencontrés dans la littérature. La TAS a montré, encore une fois, des processus de transferts d’électrons dans des échelles de l’ordre de 75-110 fs. Cependant, les transferts de retour d’électrons sont aussi très rapides (< 1 ps), ce qui est un obstacle potentiel pour des applications en cellules solaires à pigment photosensible (DSSCs). Dans la quatrième section, le chapitre 6, les transferts d’énergie triplets (TET) ont été étudiés pour les assemblages MCP•••[Pd32+] et [Pd32+]•••DCP•••[Pd32+]. Les analyses spectrales des états transitoires dans l’échelle de temps de la ns-[mu]s démontrent de façon évidente les TETs; ceux-ci présentent des transferts d’énergie lents et/ou des vitesses moyennes pour des transferts d’énergie T1-T1 (3dye*•••[Pd32+] → dye•••3[Pd32+]*) opérant à travers exclusivement le mécanisme de Förster avec des valeurs de kET autour de ~ 1 × 105 s-1 selon les mesures d’absorption transitoires à 298 K. Des forces motrices non-favorables rendent ces types de processus non-opérants ou très lents dans les états T1. L’état T1 de [Pd32+] (~8190 cm-1) a été qualitativement déterminé par DFT et par la mise en évidence de l’émission S0 ← Tn retardée à 680-700 nm provenant de l’annihilation T1-T1, ce qui fait que ce cluster peut potentiellement agir comme un donneur à partir de ses états Tn, et accepteur à partir de T1 à l’intérieur de ces assemblages. Des pertes d’intensités de types statiques pour la phosphorescence dans le proche-IR sont observées à 785 nm. Ce travail démontre une efficacité modérée des colorants à base de porphyrines pour être impliquée dans des TETs avec des fragments organométalliques, et ce, même attachées grâce à des interactions ioniques. En conclusion, les assemblages ioniques à base de porphyrines et de clusters de palladium présentent des propriétés de transferts d’électrons S1 ultra-rapides, et des transferts d’énergie T1 de vitesses modérées, ce qui est utile pour de possibles applications comme outils optoélectroniques. D’autres études, plus en profondeur, sont présentement en progrès.
