Resumo:
Contemporary themes in public policy have emphasised co-productive approaches within both the access and provision of support services to older people. This paper provides a cross disciplinary exploration from its respective authors perspectives on social work and educational gerontology to examine the potential for lifelong learning and learning interventions from which co-production with those using social care services in later life might be better facilitated. Using an example from the UK, we specifically elicit how co-produced care can enhance the horizon of learning and learning research. The synthesis of ideas across these two disciplines could enrich understanding and provide essential levers for moving towards empowerment and emancipation by engaging with a more co-productive approach in social care for older people. Schurz and Tholen (2016) argue that common approaches to studying the neural basis of “theory of mind” (ToM) obscure a potentially important role for inferior frontal gyrus (IFG) in managing conflict between perspectives, and urge new work to address this question: “to gain a full understanding of the IFG's role in ToM, we encourage future imaging studies to use a wider range of control conditions.” (p332). We wholeheartedly agree, but note that this observation has been made before, and has already led to a programme of work that provides evidence from fMRI, EEG, and TMS on the role of IFG in managing conflict between self and other perspectives in ToM. We highlight these works, and in particular we demonstrate how careful manipulation within ToM tasks has been used to act as an internal control condition, wherein conflict has been manipulated within-subject. We further add to the discussion by framing key questions that remain regarding IFG in the context of these. Using limitations in the existing research, we outline how best researchers can proceed with the challenge set by Schurz and Tholen (2016).

ithin the wide topic of disguise in literature, we could signal a subcurrent which can be found in a number of literary texts: the idea of madness as a disguise, i.e. the creation or invention of a ‘false self’ as a mask which is presented to the world and which conceals the real self. In The Divided Self (1960), R. D. Laing deals with the “personality, false self, mask, front or persona that (...) [schizophrenic] wear” (73). Using as a basis Laing’s theories on schizophrenia and the creation of a false-self system, we will analyze two works by Samuel Beckett: Murphy and Endgame, where we find the uses of madness as disguise in a series of ways: through the usage of ‘disguised’ language (what we could refer to as schizophrenese) which acts as a mask for real meaning; through odd ‘schizophrenic’ behaviour on the part of the characters (which screens real intentions), and, mainly, through the creation of a ‘false self’ which acts as a disguise and barrier between the inner self and the real world. These two works by Samuel Beckett, where real intentions and meanings are continuously concealed and disguised in a desperate attempt to preserve the inner self, lend themselves to an analysis of madness as disguise, precisely the one we attempt to carry out in our paper.

The author explores her experience of yoga as a therapeutic tool in recovering from the impact of losing a close friend to suicide. The benefits of yoga include improved emotional self-regulation, a more positive relationship with self, and the emergence of a new personal physical reality. An autoethnographical approach permits a necessarily ambiguous and messy in-depth exploration of yoga as a resource for well-being. Nevertheless, it is hoped that it will serve as a means of promoting further study into the role of cultural resources, particularly body-based practices, as means of coming to terms with traumatic loss.

O objetivo deste trabalho é apresentar uma discussão teórico-metodológica da gestão ambiental para a proteção dos recursos hídricos, na perspectiva de analisar a nascente do Igarapé do Mindu, observando a problemática crescimento versus preservação ambiental, de maneira a proporcionar bases para discussão e apresentação de alternativas de gestão ambiental para a proteção de nascentes dos igarapés de Manaus. Neste sentido, faremos uma abordagem Geográfica das políticas de Gestão Ambiental voltadas para o planejamento e ordenamento do territorial a partir da bacia hidrográfica, na busca por apontar a Educação Ambiental como articuladora desse processo. Ocupações antrópicas às margens de córregos e nascentes tem sido freqüente nas cidades amazônicas, onde muitas vezes, o poder público não consegue alcançar com suas políticas, seja pela imensidão do território seja pela ineficiência dos equipamentos públicos. Nenhuma civilização conseguiu florescer sem ter resolvido o problema de obtenção dos recursos hídricos, matéria-prima fundamental e veículo propiciador do desenvolvimento econômico (ALMEIDA, 2007). Portanto, pensar ações que possibilitem o desenvolvimento de políticas públicas para a proteção de nascentes, em áreas urbanas, deve se tornar realidade à medida que a comunidade e o poder público consigam articular-se e, a Educação Ambiental tem o desafio na formação dessa nova postura.

One of the main process features under study in Cognitive Translation & Interpreting Studies (CTIS) is the chronological unfolding of the tasks. The analyses of time spans in translation have been conceived in two ways: (1) studying those falling between text units of different sizes: words, phrases, sentences, and paragraphs; (2) setting arbitrary time span thresholds to explore where do they fall in the text, whether between text units or not. Writing disfluencies may lead to comprehensive insights into the cognitive activities involved in typing while translating. Indeed, long time spans are often taken as hints that cognitive resources have been subtracted from typing and devoted to other activities, such as planning, evaluating, etc. This exploratory, pilot study combined both approaches to seek potential general tendencies and contrasts in informants’ inferred mental processes when performing different writing tasks, through the analysis of their behaviors, as keylogged. The study tasks were retyping, monolingual free writing, translation, revision and a multimodal task—namely, monolingual text production based on an infographic leaflet. Task logs were chunked, and shorter time spans, including those within words, were analyzed following the Task Segment Framework (Muñoz & Apfelthaler, in press). Finally, time span analysis was combined with the analysis of the texts as to their lexical density, type-token ratio and word frequency. Several previous results were confirmed, and some others were surprising. Time spans in free writing were longer between paragraphs and sentences, possibly hinting at planning and, in translation, between clauses and words, suggesting more cognitive activities at these levels. On the other hand, the infographic was expected to facilitate the writing process, but most time spans were longer than in both free writing and translation. Results of the multimodal task and some other results suggest venues for further research.

Frame. Assessing the difficulty of source texts and parts thereof is important in CTIS, whether for research comparability, for didactic purposes or setting price differences in the market. In order to empirically measure it, Campbell & Hale (1999) and Campbell (2000) developed the Choice Network Analysis (CNA) framework. Basically, the CNA’s main hypothesis is that the more translation options (a group of) translators have to render a given source text stretch, the higher the difficulty of that text stretch will be. We will call this the CNA hypothesis. In a nutshell, this research project puts the CNA hypothesis to the test and studies whether it does actually measure difficulty. Data collection. Two groups of participants (n=29) of different profiles and from two universities in different countries had three translation tasks keylogged with Inputlog, and filled pre- and post-translation questionnaires. Participants translated from English (L2) into their L1s (Spanish or Italian), and worked—first in class and then at home—using their own computers, on texts ca. 800–1000 words long. Each text was translated in approximately equal halves in two 1-hour sessions, in three consecutive weeks. Only the parts translated at home were considered in the study. Results. A very different picture emerged from data than that which the CNA hypothesis might predict: there was no prevalence of disfluent task segments when there were many translation options, nor was a prevalence of fluent task segments associated to fewer translation options. Indeed, there was no correlation between the number of translation options (many and few) and behavioral fluency. Additionally, there was no correlation between pauses and both behavioral fluency and typing speed. The discussed theoretical flaws and the empirical evidence lead to the conclusion that the CNA framework does not and cannot measure text and translation difficulty.

The abundance of visual data and the push for robust AI are driving the need for automated visual sensemaking. Computer Vision (CV) faces growing demand for models that can discern not only what images "represent," but also what they "evoke." This is a demand for tools mimicking human perception at a high semantic level, categorizing images based on concepts like freedom, danger, or safety. However, automating this process is challenging due to entropy, scarcity, subjectivity, and ethical considerations. These challenges not only impact performance but also underscore the critical need for interoperability. This dissertation focuses on abstract concept-based (AC) image classification, guided by three technical principles: situated grounding, performance enhancement, and interpretability. We introduce ART-stract, a novel dataset of cultural images annotated with ACs, serving as the foundation for a series of experiments across four key domains: assessing the effectiveness of the end-to-end DL paradigm, exploring cognitive-inspired semantic intermediaries, incorporating cultural and commonsense aspects, and neuro-symbolic integration of sensory-perceptual data with cognitive-based knowledge. Our results demonstrate that integrating CV approaches with semantic technologies yields methods that surpass the current state of the art in AC image classification, outperforming the end-to-end deep vision paradigm. The results emphasize the role semantic technologies can play in developing both effective and interpretable systems, through the capturing, situating, and reasoning over knowledge related to visual data. Furthermore, this dissertation explores the complex interplay between technical and socio-technical factors. By merging technical expertise with an understanding of human and societal aspects, we advocate for responsible labeling and training practices in visual media. These insights and techniques not only advance efforts in CV and explainable artificial intelligence but also propel us toward an era of AI development that harmonizes technical prowess with deep awareness of its human and societal implications.

A Milano, nel sito che ha ospitato Expo 2015, sta nascendo MIND:Milano Innovation District, un quartiere innovativo e sostenibile che si candida a diventare luogo di eccellenze grazie ad una partnership pubblico-privato che sta rigenerando l’area creando un quartiere ex-novo. Gli attori pubblici e privati in gioco nella creazione di questo luogo sono molteplici e uniti allo scopo di creare un distretto appetibile sia per le aziende che vi si insedieranno sia per la popolazione milanese e lombarda. Proprio la cittadinanza svolgerà un ruolo chiave nella creazione di una vera e propria comunità in grado di far raggiungere a questo quartiere l’ambizioso obiettivo di diventare un luogo vissuto a pieno a tutte le ore del giorno e durante tutto l’anno. Il luogo infatti non presenta una comunità di partenza radicata nel territorio in grado di garantire storia e identità: il sito infatti aveva ospitato Expo nel 2015, dopo che i lavori di bonifica e creazione di infrastrutture avevano dal 2011 colmato questo vuoto urbano, ma è stato effettivamente aperto al pubblico soltanto nel mese di Maggio 2022. Coinvolgere la comunità che vive nelle aree limitrofe risulterà di primaria importanza per avvicinare la popolazione a questo luogo e renderla partecipe della co-creazione. Come si inserirà questo quartiere nel tessuto urbano e sociale milanese? E quali esternalità sono previste per la città di Milano, i comuni limitrofi della provincia?

The scope of this paper is to analyze the self-declared symptoms and state of well-being of participants in the Yoga and Promotion of Health program, which consisted of hatha yoga lessons. It includes body exercises and breathing techniques, as well as ethical and philosophical content, administered to two groups of lecturers, workers and students of a public university in the State of São Paulo from August to December 2011 and March to June 2012. The participants filled out the adapted version of the Measure Yourself Medical Outcome Profile form at the beginning and end of the program. Of the 20 participants in Group 1, eight filled out the form and half of them reported the improvement of self-declared symptoms; as regards the state of well being, three of them felt they had improved. In Group 2, which also had 20 participants, nine completed the program and all of them reported improvements of self-declared symptoms and well-being. In conclusion, yoga is a mind-body practice which exerts an important therapeutic effect on most practitioners and also promotes health for the majority of them, expanding their capacity of self perception and self care. However, it should be noted that it doesn't achieve the same positive effect for all practitioners as some yoga traditions advocate.

This article shows that the term functionalism, very often understood as a single or uniform approach in linguistics, has to be understood in its different perspectives. I start by presenting an opposing conception similar to the I-language vs E-language in Chomsky (1986). As in the latter conception , language can be understood as an abstract model of a mind internal mechanism responsible for language production and perception or, as in the former one, it can be the description of the external use of language. Also like with formalists , there are functionalists who look for cross-linguistic variation (and universals of language use) and functionalists who look for language internal variation. It is also shown that functionalists can differ in the extent to which social variables are considered in the explanation of linguistic form.

This article considers a procedure for data collection called autoscopy. Autoscopy entails the video recording of a practice with the purpose of allowing analysis and self-evaluation by one of the protagonists of that practice. The objective of the video recording is that of apprehending the actions of the agent (or agents), the scenario, and the plot that make up a situation. The recorded material is subjected to sessions of analysis after the action that aim at the understanding of the reflective process of the agent (or agents) through their verbalizations during the analysis of video recorded scenes. The present text introduces a theoretical basis for the procedure of autoscopy, deals with advantages and limitations of its use, as well as with aspects that deserve attention and, finally, describes the authors' experiences in two studies in which the procedure was employed. Starting from these two experiences, differences and similarities are pointed out between the studies, especially regarding the participants, object, and the time distribution of the video recordings. The authors draw considerations about the formative-reflective potential of the procedure, both for research situations and for the learning and training of various professionals, considering it to be an excellent educational instrument. It is, however, vital to keep in mind the need to recognize and return to the teacher, as an autoscopic participant, his condition as subject of his own profession, thereby promoting, besides the self-evaluation, also the autonomy of his thinking and doing.
