ABOVEGROUND AND BELOWGROUND BIOMASS AND CARBON ESTIMATES FOR CLONAL EUCALYPTUS TREES IN SOUTHEAST BRAZIL

Eucalyptus plantations represent a short term and cost efficient alternative for sequestrating carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Despite the known potential of forest plantations of fast growing species to store carbon in the biomass, there are relatively few studies including precise estimates of the amount of carbon in these plantations. In this study it was determined the carbon content in the stems, branches, leaves and roots of a clonal Eucalyptus grandis plantation in the Southeast of Brazil. We developed allometric equations to estimate the total amount of carbon and total biomass, and produced an estimate of the carbon stock in the stand level. Altogether, 23 sample trees were selected for aboveground biomass assessment. The roots of 9 of the 23 sampled trees were partially excavated to assess the belowground biomass at a singletree level. Two models with DBH, H and DBH2H were tested. The average relative share of carbon content in the stem, branch, leaf and root compartments was 44.6%, 43.0%, 46.1% and 37.8%, respectively, which is smaller than the generic value commonly used (50%). The best-fit allometric equations to estimate the total amount of carbon and total biomass had DBH2H as independent variable. The root-to-shoot ratio was relatively stable (C.V. = 27.5%) probably because the sub-sample was composed of clones. Total stand carbon stock in the Eucalyptus plantation was estimated to be 73.38 MgC ha-1, which is within the carbon stock range for Eucalyptus plantations.

Measuring Cost of Poor Quality in Industrial Electronics

Quality is not only free but it can be a profit maker. Every dollar that is not spent on doing things wrong becomes a dollar right on the bottom line. The main objective of this thesis is to give an answer on how cost of poor quality can be measured theoretically correctly. Different calculation methods for cost of poor quality are presented and discussed in order to give comprehensive picture about measurement process. The second objective is to utilize the knowledge from the literature review and to apply it when creating a method for measuring cost of poor quality in supplier performance rating. Literature review indicates that P-A-F model together with ABC methodology provides a mean for quality cost calculations. These models give an answer what should be measured and how this measurement should be carried out. However, when product or service quality costs are incurred when quality character derivates from target value, then QLF seems to be most appropriate methodology for quality cost calculation. These methodologies were applied when creating a quality cost calculation method for supplier performance ratings.

”Den finländska svenskan” 1860–1920 : tidig svensk språkplanering i Finland ur ett idéhistoriskt perspektiv

I avhandlingen studeras två språkdiskussioner, varav den ena berör stavningen och den andra särdragen (finlandismerna) i svenskan i Finland. Att perspektivet är idéhistoriskt innebär att de idéer och ideologier som påverkade språkplaneringen är i fokus. Dessa ideologier utgörs främst av skandinavism, purism, traditionalism och funktionalism. Då det gäller särdragsdebatten undersöks dessutom på vilket sätt den kan förstås mot bakgrund av den svensknationella mobiliseringen och konstruktionen av en finlandssvensk identitet. I avhandlingen diskuteras även olika ståndpunkter och deras förhållande till varandra. I fråga om finlandismerna handlar det om en överlevnadsstrategi kontra national-liberala synpunkter. Den förstnämnda, representerad av bland andra Hugo Bergroth, dominerade, även om den i enstaka fall utsattes för kritik. I rättstavningsdebatten framträder å sin sida ett tydligt funktionalistiskt perspektiv, kopplat till ett slags demokratisering av språket: genom en förenklad stavning skulle varje medborgare kunna ta del av den bildning som krävdes i det moderna samhället. Aktörerna, det vill säga de som deltog i diskussionen om språket, ges en framträdande plats. Dessutom undersöks vilken betydelse folkskolan och teatern tillmättes i den språkliga diskussionen.
