Laser conditioning effects of the HfO2/SiO2 antireflective (AR) coatings at 1064 nm and the accumulation effects of multishot laser radiation were investigated. The HfO2/SiO2 AR coatings were prepared by E-beam evaporation (EBE). The singleshot and multi-shot laser induced damage threshold was detected following ISO standard 11254-1.2, and the laser conditioning was conducted by three-step raster scanning method. It was found that the single-shot LIDT and multi-shot LIDT was almost the same. The damage mostly > 80% occurred in the first shot under multi-shot laser radiation, and after that the damage occurring probability plummeted to < 5%. There was no obvious enhancement of the laser damage resistance for both the single-shot and multi-shot laser radiation of the AR coatings after laser conditioning. A Nomarski microscope was employed to map the damage morphology, and it found that the damage behavior is defect-initiated for both unconditioned and conditioned samples. © 2004 Elsevier B.V. [EN] This article consists of a study (provenance, date of the manuscript, sources of the glossary, etc.) and an edition of the fragment of an epitome of the «Liber Glossarum» which is contained in a ms. about the year 1000 A.D. From the "Spanish symptoms" which one can track in the present copy, the ms. El Escorial L.I.15, from the 16th-17th century, the author infers that his model, now perished, was written in Spain and in wisigothic script about the year 1000. On the other side, on the basis of the copy the author reconstructs the primitive glossary text of the 10th-11th century model in a critical edition accompanied by a critical apparat and sources.

Settled juvenile blue rockfish (Sebastes mystinus) were collected from two kelp beds approximately 335 km apart off Mendocino in northern California and Monterey in central California. A total of 112 rockfish were collected from both sites over 5 years (1993, 1994, 2001, 2002, and 2003). Total age, settlement date, age at settlement, and birth date were determined from otolith microstructure. Fish off Mendocino settled mostly in June and fish off Monterey settled mostly in May (average difference in settlement=23 days). Although the difference in the timing of settlement followed this same pattern for both areas over the five years, settlement occurred later in 2002 and 2003 than in the prior years of sampling. The difference in the timing of settlement was due primarily to differences in birth dates for the two areas. The time of settlement was positively related to upwelling and negatively related to sea level anomaly for most of the months before settlement. Knowledge of the timing of settlement has implications for design and placement of marine protected areas because protection of nursery grounds is frequently a major objective of these protected areas. The timing of settlement is also an important consideration in the planning of surveys of early recruits because mistimed surveys (caused by latitudinal differences in the timing of settlement) could produce biased estimates.

Length-weight relationships of 335 species of fish of New Caledonia, belonging to 65 families of coral reef fishes, were computed (80%) or assembled from the literature (20% of all cases) to facilitate, among other things, estimation of coral reef fish biomass from visual census.
