The spatial pattern of outbreaks of pink wax scale, Ceroplastes rubens Maskell, within and among umbrella trees, Schefflera actinophylla (Endl.), in southeastern Queensland was investigated. Pink wax scale was common on S. actinophylla, with approximately 84% of trees positive for scale and 14% of bees recording outbreak densities exceeding 0.4 adults per leaflet. Highly aggregated distributions of C. rubens occur within and among umbrella trees. Clumped distributions within trees appear to result from variable birth and death rates and limited movement of first instar crawlers. The patchy distribution of pink wax scale among trees is probably a consequence of variation in dispersal success of scale, host and environmental suitability for establishment and rates of biological control. Pink wax scale was more prevalent on trees in roadside positions and in exposed situations, indicating that such trees are more suitable and/or susceptible to scale colonisation.

Izenman and Sommer (1988) used a non-parametric Kernel density estimation technique to fit a seven-component model to the paper thickness of the 1872 Hidalgo stamp issue of Mexico. They observed an apparent conflict when fitting a normal mixture model with three components with unequal variances. This conflict is examined further by investigating the most appropriate number of components when fitting a normal mixture of components with equal variances.

Background and aims: HDL-cholesterol (HDL-C) and non-HDL-cholesterol (nHDL-C) are involved in atherosclerosis. The aim of this study was to determine the distribution of HDL-C and nHDL-C and its association with cardiovascular and socio-cultural variables in a pediatric Brazilian sample. Methods and results: Children and adolescents from Florianopolis were randomly selected and a structured questionnaire was administered, a physical examination was performed and a blood sample was collected. Enzymatic and Direct methods in vitro were used to determine the total cholesterol and HDL-cholesterol levels. The associations among HDL-C and nHDL-C and the described variables were tested by odds ratio and logistic regression. A total of 1009 individuals were examined. Based on the Brazilian criteria, 23% were classified with low levels of HDL-C and 25% with high levels of non-HDL-C. After multivariate analysis there were significant associations among low HDL-C and high C-reactive protein (OR, 3.3; 95% CI, 2.1-5.2), paternal tobacco use (OR, 1.5; 95% CI, 1.1-2.1), and high triceps-to-subscapular index (OR, 1.5; 95% CI, 1.1-2.2). There were also significant associations among high nHDL-C and high waist circumference (OR, 1.95; 95% CI, 1.16-3.29), black skin color (OR, 1.78; 95% CI, 1.06-3.06), and high income (OR, 1.48; 95% CI, 1.09-2.02). Conclusions: In this sample, low levels of HDL-C were associated with other clinical variables such as a centripetal fat pattern and C-reactive protein, and n-HDL-C was associated with abdominal obesity, skin color and economic class. Background. Acute mesenteric ischemia is a potentially fatal vascular emergency with mortality rates ranging between 60% and 80%. Several studies have extensively examined the hemodynamic and metabolic effects of superior mesenteric artery occlusion. On the other hand, the cardiocirculatory derangement and the tissue damage induced by intestinal outflow obstruction have not been investigated systematically. For these reasons we decided to assess the initial impact of venous mesenteric occlusion on intestinal blood flow distribution, and correlate these findings with other systemic and regional perfusion markers. Methods. Fourteen mongrel dogs were subjected to 45 min of superior mesenteric artery (SMAO) or vein occlusion (SMVO), and observed for 120 min after reperfusion. Systemic hemodynamics were evaluated using Swan-Ganz and arterial catheters. Regional blood flow (ultrasonic flow probes), intestinal O(2)-derived variables, and mesenteric-arterial and tonometric-arterial pCO(2) gradients (D(mv-a)pCO(2) and D(t-a)pCO(2)) were also calculated. Results. SMVO was associated with hypotension and low cardiac output. A significant increase in the regional pCO(2) gradients was also observed in both groups during the ischemic period. After reperfusion, a progressive reduction in D(mv-a)pCO(2) occurred in the SMVO group; however, no improvement in D(t-p)CO(2) was observed. The histopathologic injury scores were 2.7 +/- 0.5 and 4.8 +/- 0.2 for SMAO and SMVO, respectively. Conclusions. SMV occlusion promoted early and significant hemodynamic and metabolic derangement at systemic and regional levels. Additionally, systemic pCO(2) gradient is not a reliable parameter to evaluate the local intestinal oxygenation. Finally, the D(t-a)pCO(2) correlates with histologic changes during intestinal congestion or ischemia. However, minor histologic changes cannot be detected using this methodology. Ag-3 was produced by pulsed-nozzle laser vaporisation and jet-cooled in a Ne supersonic expansion. One-color resonant two-photon ionisation (R2PI) spectra of the (B) over tilde(2) E '' <-- (X) over tilde(2) E' transition of Ag-3 were separately measured for all four isotopic combinations. Long vibrational progressions are observed, involving clearly resolved bands at low energy, merging into a dense but resolvable spectrum up to 1000 cm(-1) above the origin. Both the ground (X) over tilde(2) E' and excited (B) over tilde(2) E '' states of Ag-3 are susceptible to Jahn-Teller distortion along the degenerate e' bending coordinate. The Jahn-Teller analysis includes both linear and quadratic terms, simultaneously with the spin-orbit coupling. Following extensive parameter fitting, the absorption spectrum is calculated, and bands assigned. The spin-orbit splitting is quenched below the localization energy, but becomes observable approximate to 300 cm(-1) above the origin.

The optimal dosing schedule for melphalan therapy of recurrent malignant melanoma in isolated limb perfusions has been examined using a physiological pharmacokinetic model with data from isolated rat hindlimb perfusions (IRHP), The study included a comparison of melphalan distribution in IRHP under hyperthermia and normothermia conditions. Rat hindlimbs were perfused with Krebs-Henseleit buffer containing 4.7% bovine serum albumin at 37 or 41.5 degrees C at a flow rate of 4 ml/min. Concentrations of melphalan in perfusate and tissues were determined by high performance liquid chromatography with fluorescence detection, The concentration of melphalan in perfusate and tissues was linearly related to the input concentration. The rate and amount of melphalan uptake into the different tissues was higher at 41.5 degrees C than at 37 degrees C. A physiological pharmacokinetic model was validated from the tissue and perfusate time course of melphalan after melphalan perfusion. Application of the model involved the amount of melphalan exposure in the muscle, skin and fat in a recirculation system was related to the method of melphalan administration: single bolus > divided bolus > infusion, The peak concentration of melphalan in the perfusate was also related to the method of administration in the same order, Infusing the total dose of melphalan over 20 min during a 60 min perfusion optimized the exposure of tissues to melphalan whilst minimizing the peak perfusate concentration of melphalan. It is suggested that this method of melphalan administration may be preferable to other methods in terms of optimizing the efficacy of melphalan whilst minimizing the limb toxicity associated with its use in isolated limb perfusion.

An isolated rat hindlimb perfusion model carrying xenografts of the human melanoma cell line MM96 was used to study the effects of perfusion conditions on melphalan distribution. Krebs-Henseleit buffer and Hartmann's solution containing 4.7% bovine serum albumin (BSA) or 2.8% dextran 40 were used as perfusates. Melphalan concentrations in perfusate, tumour nodules and normal tissues were measured using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Increasing the perfusion flow rates (from 4 to 8 mi min(-1)) resulted in higher tissue blood flow (determined with Cr-51-labelled microspheres) and melphalan uptake by tumour and normal tissues. me distribution of melphalan within tumour nodules and normal tissues was similar for both Krebs-Henseleit buffer and Hartmann's solution; however, tissue concentrations of melphalan were significantly higher for a perfusate containing 2.8% dextran 40 than for one containing 4.7% BSA. The melphalan concentration in the tumour was one-third of that found in the skin if the perfusate contained 4.7% BSA. In conclusion, this study has shown that a high perfusion flow enhances the delivery of melphalan into implanted tumour nodules and normal tissues, and a perfusate with low melphalan binding (no albumin) is preferred for maximum uptake of drug by the tumour.

We describe the twisted affine superalgebra sl(2\2)((2)) and its quantized version U-q[sl(2\2)((2))]. We investigate the tensor product representation of the four-dimensional grade star representation for the fixed-point sub superalgebra U-q[osp(2\2)]. We work out the tensor product decomposition explicitly and find that the decomposition is not completely reducible. Associated with this four-dimensional grade star representation we derive two U-q[osp(2\2)] invariant R-matrices: one of them corresponds to U-q [sl(2\2)(2)] and the other to U-q [osp(2\2)((1))]. Using the R-matrix for U-q[sl(2\2)((2))], we construct a new U-q[osp(2\2)] invariant strongly correlated electronic model, which is integrable in one dimension. Interestingly this model reduces in the q = 1 limit, to the one proposed by Essler et al which has a larger sl(2\2) symmetry.

In this study, we evaluated the biodistribution and the elimination kinetics of a biocompatible magnetic fluid, Endorem (TM), based on dextrancoated Fe(3)O(4) nanoparticles endovenously injected into Winstar rats. The iron content in blood and liver samples was recorded using electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) techniques. The EPR line intensity at g=2.1 was found to be proportional to the concentration of magnetic nanoparticles and the best temperature for spectra acquisition was 298 K. Both EPR and XRF analysis indicated that the maximum concentration of iron in the liver occurred 95 min after the ferrofluid administration. The half-life of the magnetic nanoparticles (MNP) in the blood was (11.6 +/- 0.6) min measured by EPR and (12.6 +/- 0.6) min determined by XRF. These results indicate that both EPR and XRF are very useful and appropriate techniques for the study of kinetics of ferrofluid elimination and biodistribution after its administration into the organism. A study of spin-orbit mixing and nephelauxetic effects in the electronic spectra of nickel(II)-encapsulating complexes involving mixed nitrogen and sulfur donors is reported. As the number of sulfur donors is systematically varied through the series [Ni(N6-xSx)](2+) (x = 0-6), the spin-forbidden (3)A(2)g --> E-1(g) and (3)A(2g) --> (1)A(1g) transitions undergo a considerable reduction in energy whereas the spin-allowed transitions are relatively unchanged. The [Ni(diAMN(6)sar)](2+) and [Ni(AMN(5)Ssar)](2+) complexes exhibit an unusual band shape for the (3)A(2g) --> T-3(2g) transition which is shown to arise from spin-orbit mixing of the E spin-orbit levels associated with the E-1(g) and T-3(2g) states. A significant differential nephelauxetic effect also arises from the covalency differences between the t(2g) and e(g) orbitals with the result that no single set of Racah B and C interelectron repulsion parameters adequately fit the observed spectra. Using a differential covalency ligand-field model, the spectral transitions are successfully reproduced with three independent variables corresponding to 10Dq and the covalency parameters f(t) and f(e), associated with the t(2g) and e(g) orbitals, respectively. The small decrease in f(t) from unity is largely attributed to central-field covalency effects whereas the dramatic reduction in f(e) with increasing number of sulfur donors is a direct consequence of the increased metal-ligand covalency associated with the sulfur donors. Covalency differences between the t(2g) and e(g) orbitals also result in larger 10Dq values than those obtained simply from the energy of the (3)A(2g) --> T-3(2g) spin-allowed transition.

Background: Plantar fasciitis is the third most frequent injury in runners. Despite its high prevalence, its pathogenesis remains inconclusive. The literature reports overload as the basic mechanism for its development. However, the way that these plantar loads are distributed on the foot surface of runners with plantar fasciitis and the effects of pain on this mechanical factor has not yet been investigated. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the plantar pressure distributions during running in runners with symptom or history of plantar fasciitis and runners without the disease. Methods: Forty-five recreational runners with plantar fasciitis (30 symptomatic and 15 with previous history of the disease) and 60 runners without plantar fasciitis (control group) were evaluated. Pain was assessed by a visual analogue scale. All runners were evaluated by means of the Pedar system insoles during running forty meters at a speed of 12(5%) km/h, using standard sport footwear. Two-way ANOVAS were employed to investigate the main and interaction effects between groups and plantar areas. Findings: No interaction effects were found for any of the investigated variables: peak pressure (P=0.61), contact area (P=0.38), contact time (P=0.91), and the pressure-time integral (P=0.50). Interpretation: These findings indicated that the patterns of plantar pressure distribution were not affected in recreational runners with plantar fasciitis when compared to control runners. Pain also did not interfere with the dynamic patterns of the plantar pressure distributions. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The type of surface used for running can influence the load that the locomotor apparatus will absorb and the load distribution could be related to the incidence of chronic injuries. As there is no consensus on how the locomotor apparatus adapts to loads originating from running Surfaces with different compliance, the objective of this study was to investigate how loads are distributed over the plantar surface while running on natural grass and on a rigid surface-asphalt. Forty-four adult runners with 4 3 years of running experience were evaluated while running at 12 km/h for 40 m wearing standardised running shoes and Pedar insoles (Novel). Peak pressure, contact time and contact area were measured in six regions: lateral, central and medial rearfoot, midfoot, lateral and media] forefoot. The Surfaces and regions were compared by three ANOVAS (2 x 6). Asphalt and natural grass were statistically different in all variables. Higher peak pressures were observed on asphalt at the central (p < 0.001) [grass: 303.8(66.7) kPa; asphalt: 342.3(76.3) kPa] and lateral rearfoot (p < 0.001) [grass: 312.7(75.8) kPa: asphalt: 350.9(98.3) kPa] and lateral forefoot (p < 0.001) [grass: 221.5(42.9) kPa asphalt: 245.3(55.5) kPa]. For natural grass, contact time and contact area were significantly greater at the central rearfoot (p < 0.001). These results suggest that natural grass may be a Surface that provokes lighter loads on the rearfoot and forefoot in recreational runners. (C) 2008 Sports Medicine Australia. Overdose deaths are a manor contributor to excess mortality among heroin users. It has been proposed that opioid overdose morbidity and mortality could be reduced substantially by distributing the opioid antagonist naloxone to heroin users. The ethical issues raised by this proposal are evaluated from a utilitarian perspective. The potential advantages of naloxone distribution include the increased chance of comatose opioid users being quickly resuscitated by others present at the time of an overdose, naloxone's safety and its lack of abuse potential. The main problems raised by the proposal are: the medico-legal complications of medical practitioners prescribing a drug that is most likely to be administered to and by people other than the one for whom it is prescribed; the economic costs of distributing naloxone sufficiently widely to have an impact on overdose morbidity and mortality; and the potentially greater cost-effectiveness of simpler educational interventions. Given the possible benefits of naloxone distribution, it may be worthwhile considering a controlled trial of naloxone distribution to high-risk heroin users.

This paper describes the application of two relatively new diagnostic techniques for the determination of insulation condition in aged transformers. The techniques are (a) measurements of interfacial polarization spectra by a DC method and (b) measurements of molecular weight and its distribution by gel permeation chromatography. Several other electrical properties of the cellulose polymer were also investigated. Samples were obtained from a retired power transformer and they were analysed by the developed techniques. Six distribution transformers were also tested with the interfacial polarization spectra measurement technique, and the molecular weight of paper/pressboard samples from these transformers were also measured by the gel permeation chromatography. The variation of the results through different locations in a power transformer is discussed in this paper. The possible correlation between different measured properties was investigated and discussed in this paper.

This paper describes the analysis of accelerated aged insulation samples to investigate the degradation processes observed in the insulation from aged transformers. Short term accelerated ageing experiments were performed on paper wrapped insulated conductors and on pressboard samples. The condition of aged insulation samples was investigated by two relatively new diagnostic techniques: (a) measurements of interfacial polarization spectra by a DC method (b) measurements of molecular weight and its distribution by gel permeation chromatography. Several other electrical properties of the paper/pressboard samples were also studied. Possible correlations have been investigated among the different measured properties. The GPC results have been used to predict how molecular weights change with temperature and time.
