The paper discusses the operating principles and control characteristics of a dynamic voltage restorer (DVR). It is assumed that the source voltages contain interharmonic components in addition to fundamental components. The main aim of the DVR is to produce a set of clean balanced sinusoidal voltages across the load terminals irrespective of unbalance, distortion and voltage sag/swell in the supply voltage. An algorithm has been discussed for extracting fundamental phasor sequence components from the samples of three-phase voltages or current waveforms having integer harmonics and interharmonics. The DVR operation based on extracted components is demonstrated. The switching signal is generated using a deadbeat controller. It has been shown that the DVR is able to compensate these interharmonic components such that the load voltages are perfectly regulated. The DVR operation under deep voltage sag is also discussed. The proposed DVR operation is verified through the computer simulation studies using the MATLAB software package.

Various load compensation schemes proposed in literature assume that voltage source at point of common coupling (PCC) is stiff. In practice, however, the load is remote from a distribution substation and is supplied by a feeder. In the presence of feeder impedance, the PWM inverter switchings distort both the PCC voltage and the source currents. In this paper load compensation with such a non-stiff source is considered. A switching control of the voltage source inverter (VSI) based on state feedback is used for load compensation with non-stiff source. The design of the state feedback controller requires careful considerations in choosing a gain matrix and in the generation of reference quantities. These aspects are considered in this paper. Detailed simulation and experimental results are given to support the control design.

The aim of this paper is to explore a new approach to obtain better traffic demand (Origin-Destination, OD matrices) for dense urban networks. From reviewing existing methods, from static to dynamic OD matrix evaluation, possible deficiencies in the approach could be identified: traffic assignment details for complex urban network and lacks in dynamic approach. To improve the global process of traffic demand estimation, this paper is focussing on a new methodology to determine dynamic OD matrices for urban areas characterized by complex route choice situation and high level of traffic controls. An iterative bi-level approach will be used, the Lower level (traffic assignment) problem will determine, dynamically, the utilisation of the network by vehicles using heuristic data from mesoscopic traffic simulator and the Upper level (matrix adjustment) problem will proceed to an OD estimation using optimization Kalman filtering technique. In this way, a full dynamic and continuous estimation of the final OD matrix could be obtained. First results of the proposed approach and remarks are presented.

This paper discusses the areawide Dynamic ROad traffic NoisE (DRONE) simulator, and its implementation as a tool for noise abatement policy evaluation. DRONE involves integrating a road traffic noise estimation model with a traffic simulator to estimate road traffic noise in urban networks. An integrated traffic simulation-noise estimation model provides an interface for direct input of traffic flow properties from simulation model to noise estimation model that in turn estimates the noise on a spatial and temporal scale. The output from DRONE is linked with a geographical information system for visual representation of noise levels in the form of noise contour maps.

This paper presents a case study of a design for a complete microair vehicle thruster. Fixed-pitch small-scale rotors, brushless motors, lithium-polymer cells, and embedded control are combined to produce a mechanically simple, high-performance thruster with potentially high reliability. The custom rotor design requires a balance between manufacturing simplicity and rigidity of a blade versus its aerodynamic performance. An iterative steady-state aeroelastic simulator is used for holistic blade design. The aerodynamic load disturbances of the rotor-motor system in normal conditions are experimentally characterized. The motors require fast dynamic response for authoritative vehicle flight control. We detail a dynamic compensator that achieves satisfactory closed-loop response time. The experimental rotor-motor plant displayed satisfactory thrust performance and dynamic response.

Fire design is an essential part of the overall design procedure of structural steel members and systems. Conventionally, increased fire rating is provided simply by adding more plasterboards to Light gauge Steel Frame (LSF) stud walls, which is inefficient. However, recently Kolarkar & Mahendran (2008) developed a new composite wall panel system, where the insulation was located externally between the plasterboards on both sides of the steel wall frame. Numerical and experimental studies were undertaken to investigate the structural and fire performance of LSF walls using the new composite panels under axial compression. This paper presents the details of the numerical studies of the new LSF walls and the results. It also includes brief details of the experimental studies. Experimental and numerical results were compared for the purpose of validating the developed numerical model. The paper also describes the structural and fire performance of the new LSF wall system in comparison to traditional wall systems using cavity insulation.

With the increasing threat of cyber and other attacks on critical infrastructure, governments throughout the world have been organizing industry to share information on possible threats. In Australia the Office of the Attorney General has formed Trusted Information Sharing Networks (TISN) for the various critical industries such as banking and electricity. Currently the majority of information for a TISN is shared at physical meetings. To meet cyber threats there are clearly limitations to physical meetings. Many of these limitations can be overcome by the creation of a virtual information sharing network (VISN). However there are many challenges to overcome in the design of a VISN both from a policy and technical viewpoint. We shall discuss some of these challenges in this talk.

This paper presents a novel approach to road-traffic control for interconnected junctions. With a local fuzzy-logic controller (FLC) installed at each junction, a dynamic-programming (DP) technique is proposed to derive the green time for each phase in a traffic-light cycle. Coordination parameters from the adjacent junctions are also taken into consideration so that organized control is extended beyond a single junction. Instead of pursuing the absolute optimization of traffic delay, this study examines a practical approach to enable the simple implementation of coordination among junctions, while attempting to reduce delays, if possible. The simulation results show that the delay per vehicle can be substantially reduced, particularly when the traffic demand reaches the junction capacity. The implementation of this controller does not require complicated or demanding hardware, and such simplicity makes it a useful tool for offline studies or realtime control purposes.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the feasibility and potential of a hybrid scaffold system in large- and high-load-bearing osteochondral defects repair. The implants were made of medical-grade PCL (mPCL) for the bone compartment whereas fibrin glue was used for the cartilage part. Both matrices were seeded with allogenic bone marrow-derived mesenchymal cells (BMSC) and implanted in the defect (4 mm diameter×5 mm depth) on medial femoral condyle of adult New Zealand White rabbits. Empty scaffolds were used at the control side. Cell survival was tracked via fluorescent labeling. The regeneration process was evaluated by several techniques at 3 and 6 months post-implantation. Mature trabecular bone regularly formed in the mPCL scaffold at both 3 and 6 months post-operation. Micro-Computed Tomography showed progression of mineralization from the host–tissue interface towards the inner region of the grafts. At 3 months time point, the specimens showed good cartilage repair. In contrast, the majority of 6 months specimens revealed poor remodeling and fissured integration with host cartilage while other samples could maintain good cartilage appearance. In vivo viability of the transplanted cells was demonstrated for the duration of 5 weeks. The results demonstrated that mPCL scaffold is a potential matrix for osteochondral bone regeneration and that fibrin glue does not inherit the physical properties to allow for cartilage regeneration in a large and high-load-bearing defect site. The cascading appearance-based (CAB) feature extraction technique has established itself as the state-of-the-art in extracting dynamic visual speech features for speech recognition. In this paper, we will focus on investigating the effectiveness of this technique for the related speaker verification application. By investigating the speaker verification ability of each stage of the cascade we will demonstrate that the same steps taken to reduce static speaker and environmental information for the visual speech recognition application also provide similar improvements for visual speaker recognition. A further study is conducted comparing synchronous HMM (SHMM) based fusion of CAB visual features and traditional perceptual linear predictive (PLP) acoustic features to show that higher complexity inherit in the SHMM approach does not appear to provide any improvement in the final audio-visual speaker verification system over simpler utterance level score fusion.

System analysis within the traction power system is vital to the design and operation of an electrified railway. Loads in traction power systems are often characterised by their mobility, wide range of power variations, regeneration and service dependence. In addition, the feeding systems may take different forms in AC electrified railways. Comprehensive system studies are usually carried out by computer simulation. A number of traction power simulators have been available and they allow calculation of electrical interaction among trains and deterministic solutions of the power network. In the paper, a different approach is presented to enable load-flow analysis on various feeding systems and service demands in AC railways by adopting probabilistic techniques. It is intended to provide a different viewpoint to the load condition. Simulation results are given to verify the probabilistic-load-flow models.

The railway service is now the major transportation means in most of the countries around the world. With the increasing population and expanding commercial and industrial activities, a high quality of railway service is the most desirable. Train service usually varies with the population activities throughout a day and train coordination and service regulation are then expected to meet the daily passengers' demand. Dwell time control at stations and fixed coasting point in an inter-station run are the current practices to regulate train service in most metro railway systems. However, a flexible and efficient train control and operation is not always possible. To minimize energy consumption of train operation and make certain compromises on the train schedule, coast control is an economical approach to balance run-time and energy consumption in railway operation if time is not an important issue, particularly at off-peak hours. The capability to identify the starting point for coasting according to the current traffic conditions provides the necessary flexibility for train operation. This paper presents an application of genetic algorithms (GA) to search for the appropriate coasting point(s) and investigates the possible improvement on fitness of genes. Single and multiple coasting point control with simple GA are developed to attain the solutions and their corresponding train movement is examined. Further, a hierarchical genetic algorithm (HGA) is introduced here to identify the number of coasting points required according to the traffic conditions, and Minimum-Allele-Reserve-Keeper (MARK) is adopted as a genetic operator to achieve fitter solutions.

There are several noninvasive techniques for assessing the kinetics of tear film, but no comparative studies have been conducted to evaluate their efficacies. Our aim is to test and compare techniques based on high-speed videokeratoscopy (HSV), dynamic wavefront sensing (DWS), and lateral shearing interferometry (LSI). Algorithms are developed to estimate the tear film build-up time TBLD, and the average tear film surface quality in the stable phase of the interblink interval TFSQAv. Moderate but significant correlations are found between TBLD measured with LSI and DWS based on vertical coma (Pearson's r2=0.34, p<0.01) and higher order rms (r2=0.31, p<0.01), as well as between TFSQAv measured with LSI and HSV (r2=0.35, p<0.01), and between LSI and DWS based on the rms fit error (r2=0.40, p<0.01). No significant correlation is found between HSV and DWS. All three techniques estimate tear film build-up time to be below 2.5 sec, and they achieve a remarkably close median value of 0.7 sec. HSV appears to be the most precise method for measuring tear film surface quality. LSI appears to be the most sensitive method for analyzing tear film build-up.

Probabilistic load flow techniques have been adopted in AC electrified railways to study the load demand under various train service conditions. This paper highlights the differences in probabilistic load flow analysis between the usual power systems and power supply systems in AC railways; discusses the possible difficulties in problem formulation and presents the link between train movement and the corresponding power demand for load flow calculation.
