In this paper, a nonideal mechanical system with the LuGre friction damping model is considered. The mechanical model of the system is an oscillator not necessarily linear connected with an unbalanced motor of excitation with limited power supply. The control of motion and the attenuation of the Sommerfeld effect of the considered nonideal system are analyzed in this paper The mathematical model of the system is represented by coupled non-linear differential equations. The identification of some interesting nonlinear phenomenon in the transient and steady state motion of the system during the passage through resonance (using applied voltages at dc motor as control parameter) is investigated in detail using numerical simulation. A relativistic treatment of the deuteron and its observables based on a two-body Dirac (Breit) equation, with phenomenological interactions, associated to one-boson exchanges with cutoff masses, is presented. The 16-component wave function for the deuteron (J(pi) = 1+) solution contains four independent radial functions which obey a system of four coupled differential equations of first order. This radial system is numerically integrated, from infinity to the origin, by fixing the value of the deuteron binding energy and using appropriate boundary conditions at infinity. Specific examples of mixtures containing scalar, pseudoscalar and vector like terms are discussed in some detail and several observables of the deuteron are calculated. Our treatment differs from more conventional ones in that nonrelativistic reductions of the order c-2 are not used.

The SU(2) Shyrme model, expanding in the collective coordinates variables, gives rise to second-class constraints. Recently this system was embedded in a more general Abelian gauge theory using the BFFT Hamiltonian method. in this work we quantize this gauge theory computing the Noether current anomaly using for this two different methods: an operatorial Dirac first class formalism and the non-local BV quantization coupled with the Fujikawa regularization procedure. We show that the 2-matrix string model corresponds to a coupled system of 2 + 1-dimensional KP and modified KP ((m)KP2+1) integrable equations subject to a specific symmetry constraint. The latter together with the Miura-Konopelchenko map for (m)KP2+1 are the continuum incarnation of the matrix string equation. The (m)KP2+1 Miura and Backhand transformations are natural consequences of the underlying lattice structure. The constrained (m)KP2+1 system is equivalent to a 1 + 1-dimensional generalized KP-KdV hierarchy related to graded SL(3,1). We provide an explicit representation of this hierarchy, including the associated W(2,1)-algebra of the second Hamiltonian structure, in terms of free currents.

We investigate higher grading integrable generalizations of the affine Toda systems, where the flat connections defining the models take values in eigensubspaces of an integral gradation of an affine Kac-Moody algebra, with grades varying from l to -l (l > 1). The corresponding target space possesses nontrivial vacua and soliton configurations, which can be interpreted as particles of the theory, on the same footing as those associated to fundamental fields. The models can also be formulated by a hamiltonian reduction procedure from the so-called two-loop WZNW models. We construct the general solution and show the classes corresponding to the solitons. Some of the particles and solitons become massive when the conformal symmetry is spontaneously broken by a mechanism with an intriguing topological character and leading to a very simple mass formula. The massive fields associated to nonzero grade generators obey field equations of the Dirac type and may be regarded as matter fields. A special class of models is remarkable. These theories possess a U(1 ) Noether current, which, after a special gauge fixing of the conformal symmetry, is proportional to a topological current. This leads to the confinement of the matter field inside the solitons, which can be regarded as a one-dimensional bag model for QCD. These models are also relevant to the study of electron self-localization in (quasi-)one-dimensional electron-phonon systems.

We study a one-dimensional extended Peierls-Hubbard model coupled to intracell and intercell phonons for a half-filled band. The calculations are made using the Hartree-Fock and adiabatic approximations for arbitrary temperature. In addition to static spin, charge, and bond density waves, we predict intermediate phases that lack inversion symmetry, and phase transitions that reduce symmetry on increasing temperature.

In this paper we introduce a current-current type interaction term in the Lagrangian density of gravity coupled to complex scalar fields, in the presence of a degenerated Fermi gas. For low transferred momenta, such a term, which might account for the interaction among boson and fermion constituents of compact stellar objects, is subsequently reduced to a quadratic one in the scalar sector. This procedure enforces the use of a complex radial field counterpart in the equations of motion. The real and the imaginary components of the scalar field exhibit different behavior as the interaction increases. The results also suggest that the Bose-Fermi system undergoes a phase transition for a suitable choice of the coupling constant.

This paper addresses the problem of model reduction for uncertain discrete-time systems with convex bounded (polytope type) uncertainty. A reduced order precisely known model is obtained in such a way that the H2 and/or the H∞ guaranteed norm of the error between the original (uncertain) system and the reduced one is minimized. The optimization problems are formulated in terms of coupled (non-convex) LMIs - Linear Matrix Inequalities, being solved through iterative algorithms. Examples illustrate the results.

We derive the equation of state of nuclear matter for the quark-meson coupling model taking into account quantum fluctuations of the σ meson as well as vacuum polarization effects for the nucleons. This model incorporates explicitly quark degrees of freedom with quarks coupled to the scalar and vector mesons. Quantum fluctuations lead to a softer equation of state for nuclear matter giving a lower value of incompressibility than would be reached without quantum effects. The in-medium nucleon and σ-meson masses are also calculated in a self-consistent manner. The spectral function of the σ meson is calculated and the σ mass has the value increased with respect to the purely classical approximation at high densities.

In this work we study the warm equation of state of asymmetric nuclear matter in the quark-meson coupling model which incorporates explicitly quark degrees of freedom, with quarks coupled to scalar, vector, and isovector mesons. Mechanical and chemical instabilities are discussed as a function of density and isospin asymmetry. The binodal section, essential in the study of the liquid-gas phase transition is also constructed and discussed. The main results for the equation of state are compared with two common parametrizations used in the nonlinear Walecka model and the differences are outlined.

We discuss the thermal dependence of the zero-bias electrical conductance for a quantum dot embedded in a quantum wire, or side-coupled to it. In the Kondo regime, the temperature-dependent conductances map linearly onto the conductance for the symmetric Anderson Hamiltonian. The mapping fits accurately numerical renormalization-group results for the conductance in each geometry. In the side-coupled geometry, the conductance is markedly affected by a gate potential applied to the wire; in the embedded geometry, it is not. © 2010 IOP Publishing Ltd.
