Ribbons of nominal composition (Pr(9.5)Fe(84.5)B(6))(0.96)Cr(0.01)(TiC)(0.03) were produced by arc-melting and melt-spinning the alloys on a Cu wheel. X-ray diffraction (XRD) reveals two main phases, one based upon alpha-Fe and the other upon Pr(2)Fe(14)B. The ribbons show exchange spring behavior with H (c) = 12.5 kOe and (BH)(max) = 13.6 MGOe when these two phases are well coupled. Transmission electron microscopy revealed the coupled behavior is observed when the microstructure consists predominantly of alpha-Fe grains (diameter similar to 100 nm.) surrounded by hard material containing Pr(2)Fe(14)B. The microstructure is discussed in terms of a calculation by Skomski and Coey. A first-order-reversal-curve (FORC) analysis was performed for both a well-coupled sample and a poorly coupled sample. The FORC diagrams show two strong peaks for both the poorly coupled sample and for the well-coupled material. In both cases, the localization of the FORC probability suggests magnetizing interactions between particles. Switching field distributions were calculated and are consistent with the sample microstructure.

The Pinguino deposit, located in the low sulfidation epithermal metallogenetical province of the Deseado Massif, Patagonia, Argentina, represents a distinct deposit type in the region. It evolved through two different mineralization events: an early In-bearing polymetallic event that introduced In, Zn, Pb, Ag, Cd, Au, As, Cu, Sn, W and Bi represented by complex sulfide mineralogy, and a late Ag-Au quartz-rich vein type that crosscut and overprints the early polymetallic mineralization. The indium-bearing polymetallic mineralization developed in three stages: an early Cu-Au-In-As-Sn-W-Bi stage (Ps(1)), a Zn-Pb-Ag-In-Cd-Sb stage (Ps(2)) and a late Zn-In-Cd (Ps(3)). Indium concentrations in the polymetallic veins show a wide range (3.4 to 1,184 ppm In). The highest indium values (up to 1,184 ppm) relate to the Ps(2) mineralization stage, and are associated with Fe-rich sphalerites, although significant In enrichment (up to 159 ppm) is also present in the Ps(1) paragenesis associated with Sn-minerals (ferrokesterite and cassiterite). The hydrothermal alteration associated with the polymetallic mineralization is characterized by advanced argillic alteration within the immediate vein zone, and sericitic alteration enveloping the vein zone. Fluid inclusion studies indicate homogenisation temperatures of 308.2-327A degrees C for Ps(1) and 255-312.4A degrees C for Ps(2), and low to moderate salinities (2 to 5 eq.wt.% NaCl and 4 to 9 eq.wt.% NaCl, respectively). delta(34)S values of sulfide minerals (+0.76aEuro degrees to +3.61aEuro degrees) indicate a possible magmatic source for the sulfur in the polymetallic mineralization while Pb isotope ratios for the sulfides and magmatic rocks ((206)Pb/(204)Pb, (207)Pb/(204)Pb and (208)Pb/(204)Pb ratios of 17.379 to 18.502; 15.588 to 15.730 and 38.234 to 38.756, respectively) are consistent with the possibility that the Pb reservoirs for both had the same crustal source. Spatial relationships, hydrothermal alteration styles, S and Pb isotopic data suggest a probable genetic relation between the polymetallic mineralization and dioritic intrusions that could have been the source of metals and hydrothermal fluids. Mineralization paragenesis, alteration mineralogy, geochemical signatures, fluid inclusion data and isotopic data, confirm that the In-bearing polymetallic mineralization from Pinguino deposit is a distinct type, in comparison with the well-known epithermal low sulfidation mineralization from the Deseado Massif.

In order to evaluate the interactions between Au/Cu atoms and clean Si(l 11) surface, we used synchrotron radiation grazing incidence X-ray fluorescence analysis and theoretical calculations. Optimized geometries and energies on different adsorption sites indicate that the binding energies at different adsorption sites are high, suggesting a strong interaction between metal atom and silicon surface. The Au atom showed higher interaction than Cu atom. The theoretical and experimental data showed good agreement. Crown Copyright (C) 2009 Published by Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In this work, we studied the photocatalytic and the structural aspects of silicon wafers doped with Au and Cu submitted to thermal treatment. The materials were obtained by deposition of metals on Si using the sputtering method followed by fast heating method. The photocatalyst materials were characterized by synchrotron-grazing incidence X-ray fluorescence, ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and assays of H(2)O(2) degradation. The doping process decreases the optical band gap of materials and the doping with Au causes structural changes. The best photocatalytic activity was found for thermally treated material doped with Au. Theoretical calculations at density functional theory level are in agreement with the experimental data.

Apresenta-se neste trabalho um estudo experimental da dinâmica do fluxo magnético intergranular no cuprato supercondutor Y Ba2Cu3O7 e nos compósitos Y Ba2CU3O7 fi/Ag para várias concentrações de prata. Verificou-se que sob certas condições é possível separar os efeitos da dinâmica do fluxo de Josephson daqueles resultantes da dinâmica de Abrikosov. Através da técnica de medidas de magnetização DC foram obtidas as linhas de depinning inicial e de irreversibilidade magnética em campo magnético aplicado até 120 Oe. O revestimento dos grãos supercondutores aparentemente não afeta a energia de acoplamento dos elos fracos entre os grãos e o potencial de pinning até 16.1 % em peso de prata. A vantagem da mistura da prata é que esta melhora as propriedades mecânicas dos óxidos supercondutores além de melhorar as correntes críticas do sistema. Observamos que o depinning do fluxo de Josephson começa numa temperatura bem definida, dependendo do campo magnético aplicado e gradualmente aumenta com a temperatura até ou muito próximo do limite de irreversibilidade, acima do qual todo o fluxo intergranular (e intragranular) está livre. As linhas de irreversibilidade das nossas amostras podem ser entendidas dentro do modelo do Vidro supercondutor.

Entre maio de 2001 e janeiro de 2002, foram realizadas coletas sazonais na lagoa Azul, Siderópolis, SC. Esta lagoa formou-se por lavra de mineração de carvão a céu aberto desativada. Foram avaliadas as concentrações de Cr, Mn, Ni, Zn e Fe na água e no sedimento. Estes metais, exceto o Fe, foram também analisados no músculo e no fígado das espécies dos peixes Oreochromis niloticus (tilápia) e Geophagus brasiliensis (acará). O objetivo foi avaliar a qualidade da lagoa, bem como, das espécies de peixes predominantes, devido a preocupação quanto ao consumo potencial das mesmas pela população do entorno. As análises do sedimento, quando comparada a locais não contaminados, indicam concentração elevada para Fe, Mn, Cr e Zn. No compartimento água as concentrações de Fe, Mn e Ni estão acima do estabelecido para a classe 2 da Resolução CONAMA 20/86. Conforme análise estatística, em ambos os compartimentos abióticos ocorrem diferenças significativas entre os 4 pontos amostrados, porém diferença sazonal ocorre somente para o compartimento água. O conteúdo de metais em peixes não apresenta diferença significativa entre as espécies analisadas, todavia entre os diferentes tecidos analisados, o fígado apresentou a maior concentração em ambas as espécies. Através das análises do músculo (parte comestível), foi possível avaliar o risco à saúde humana. Segundo a estimativa da ingestão diária, os peixes analisados não propiciam risco aparente de contaminação à população do entorno, conforme os critérios adotados para o teor dos metais avaliados.

Neste trabalho foram estudadas as propriedades magnéticas e estruturais de filmes ultrafinos de Fe, Co e Ni produzidos por eletrodeposição sobre substratos de Au(111). Os estágios iniciais de crescimento dos filmes foram estudados por técnicas de caracterização “in-situ”. Uma nova técnica de caracterização do estado magnético de filmes ultrafinos eletrodepositados (EC-AGFM) foi utilizada, mostrando-se uma poderosa ferramenta para o estudo das propriedades magnéticas dos filmes. Outras técnicas, como STM “in-situ”, PMOKE “in-situ”, EXAFS, XRD, RBS foram utilizadas. A análise dos dados revelaram resultados diferentes para os filmes de Fe e Co/Au(111), em comparação aos filmes de Ni/Au(111). Enquanto a anisotropia magnética perpendicular (PMA) foi observada para os filmes de Fe e Co/Au(111), não foi observada para os filmes de Ni/Au(111). Os resultados são interpretados em termos das contribuições para a anisotropia magnética dos filmes. No caso do níquel, a degradação de suas propriedades magnéticas são atribuídas à incorporação de hidrogênio durante a deposição. Os resultados das análises magnética e estrutural são correlacionados a fim de compreender o comportamento das propriedades observadas. Os resultados são comparados aos obtidos por técnicas em vácuo.

Nesta dissertação, apresenta-se o trabalho realizado no decorrer do segundo ano do Mestrado em Bioquímica Aplicada. Prepararam-se nanopartículas metálicas através da redução química de sais metálicos em solução. Obtiveram-se soluções coloidais monometálicas de Au, Ag e FeOx e bimetálicas de Au/Ag, Ag/Au, FeOx/Au e FeOx/Ag seguindo ou adaptando métodos publicados na literatura. Numa primeira fase foram sintetizadas nanopartículas monometálicas de prata e ouro utilizando-se β-D-glucose, borohidreto de sódio e β-ciclodextrina como agente redutor dos iões metálicos. Seguidamente, por co-redução de uma mistura de iões prepararam-se ligas de nanopartículas de prata e ouro e por redução sucessiva de Ag e Au sintetizaram-se nanopartículas com uma estrutura núcleo-concha. As nanopartículas de FeOx foram preparadas por co-precipitação de Fe (III) e Fe (II). O revestimento com ouro foi conseguido através da redução com citrato de sódio e para a deposição de prata utilizou-se o ácido ascórbico. As soluções coloidais preparadas foram caracterizadas através de estudos de espetroscopia do UV-vis, tendo sido registados os máximos de absorvância característicos do ouro e da prata e os desvios esperados para o caso das nanopartículas núcleo-concha. As análises por dispersão dinâmica de luz permitiram auferir o tamanho das nanopartículas, eventual aglomeração e, portanto, permitiram a apreciação da estabilidade dos coloides. Com o intuito de confirmar a formação de estruturas em camada núcleo-concha foi feita a caracterização das amostras por microscopia eletrónica de transmissão e espetroscopia de raios-X de energia dispersiva. Alguns dos espetros obtidos confirmam o sucesso na preparação de uma estrutura em multicamada. Finalmente, demonstrou-se a biocompatibilidade de algumas amostras preparadas através da realização de estudos de citotoxicidade na linha celular fibroblástica NIH 3T3.

It is located in an area of increasing oil exploration, the region of the Lower Açu is at the mercy of a possible pollution generated by this economic activity, which includes various chemical substances harmful to health, such as metals. This thesis aims to, diagnose the areas of River Piranhas-Açu, a region of the Lower Açu, which are polluted by traces factors and more. In this study, it was determined the concentration of the chemica elements Al, CD, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, P, Pb, V and Zn, through the technique of ICP-OES analysis and the size of sediments and their contents organic matter. Were mapped by GPS, 12 points from collections. The interpretations of the results, together associating that allowed pollution to a possible contamination by oil activity. The results showed tha some regions have low concentrations of cadmium, lead, copper, manganese and zinc unable to promote damage to human health. However, there are places where the concentrations of certain metals chromium, iron and zinc are moderately polluted compared to the results with the reference values of literature and others that are highly polluted by iron. However, due to a greater number of wells in production in those locations, those higher concentrations, it can be suggested a possible influence of oi production in some areas with concentrations of chromium and lead are higher than the rest of the points of monitoring. Moreover, it is observed that the highest levels of metals found in sediment of finer texture and more organic matter content

The research behind this master dissertation started with the installation of a DC sputtering system, from its first stage, the adaptation of a refrigerating system, passing by the introduction of a heating system for the chamber using a thermal belt, until the deposition of a series of Fe/MgO(100) single crystal nanometric film samples. The deposition rates of some materials such as Fe, Py and Cu were investigated through an Atomic Force Microscope (AFM). For the single crystal samples, five of them have the same growth parameters and a thickness of 250Å, except for the temperature, which varies from fifty degrees from one to another, from 100ºC to 300ºC. Three other samples also have the same deposition parameters and a temperature of 300ºC, but with thickness of 62,5Å, 150Å, and 250Å. Magneto-optical Kerr Effect (MOKE) of the magnetic curves measurements and Ferromagnetic Resonance (FMR) were made to in order to study the influence of the temperature and thickness on the sample s magnetic properties. In the present dissertation we discuss such techniques, and the experimental results are interpreted using phenomenological models, by simulation, and discussed from a physical point of view, taking into account the system s free magnetic energy terms. The results show the growth of the cubic anisotropy field (Hac) as the sample s deposition temperature increases, presenting an asymptotic behavior, similar to the characteristic charging curve of a capacitor in a RC circuit. A similar behavior was also observed for the Hac due to the increase in the samples thicknesses. The 250˚A sample, growth at 300°C, presented a Hac field close to the Fe bulk value

In this work we have developed a way to grow Fe/MgO(100) monocrystals by magnetron sputtering DC. We investigated the growing in a temperature range among 100 oC and 300 oC. Structural and magneto-crystalline properties were studied by different experimental techniques. Thickness and surface roughness of the films were investigated by atomic force microscopy, while magneto-crystalline properties were investigated by magneto-optical Kerr effect and ferromagnetic resonance. Our results show that as we increase the deposition temperature, the magneto-crystalline anisotropy of the films also increases, following the equation of Avrami. The best temperature value to make a film is 300 oC. As the main result, we built a base of magnetoresistence devices and as an aplication, we present measurements of Fe/Cr/Fe trilayer coupling. In a second work we investigated the temperature dependence of the first three interlayer spacings of Ag(100) surface using low energy electron diffraction. A linear expansion model of crystal surface was used and the values of Debye temperatures of the first two layers and thermal expansion coefficient were determinated. A relaxation of 1% was found for Ag(100) surface and these results are matched with faces (110) and (111) of the silver. iv

The Pluriserial Ribeira Magmatic System-590 of the Late Precambrian Ribeira Fold Belt comprises seven groups of high-K rocks of crustal or mantle origin with ages ranging between 620 and 570 Ma. One of these groups is represented by transalkaline suites akin to appinitic lamprophyres. The suites assemble one or more of following lithologies: (+/- quartz) gabbros and monzogabbros, (+/- quartz) diorites and monzodiorites, (+/- quartz) monzonites and syenites in addition to rare granites. All these rocks occur together in the Piracaia pluton, State of São Paulo. The mineralogy of the Piracaia suite comprises variable amounts of plagioclase (An 60-10), alkali-feldspars (orthoclase, microcline, albite), ortho- (Fe-hypersthene) and clinopyroxenes (augite), amphiboles (hornblende and rare late Fe-hastingsite), abundant biotite, quartz, opaques, sphene, allanite and zircon. Several magmatic pulses constructed the pluton. The Piracaia magma bulk trend evolved initially along the silica-undersaturation plane with simultaneous fractionation of accessory, mafic and felsic minerals. These are segregated in feldspar-rich cumulates. In the late stage, the evolutionary trend followed two distinct paths: one along the or-ab thermal barrier with the crystallization of syenites; the second one along the thermal valley in the or-ab-qz subsystem, producing quartz-syenites and granites. The source of the Piracaia magma was a 'vein-plus-wall-rock-system '. Together the pulses reflect increasing and decreasing participation of peridotites and mica pyroxenites, respectively, in the magmatogenic process. The magmatic pulses were stored in magma chambers, several drained by deep faults or fractures, which were successively reactivated and recharged. Each new pulse underwent mixing with earlier residual magma, followed by fractionation. During ascent through the hot and thickened post-collisional crust, the magma pulses underwent minor compositional changes by crustal contamination. The concentration of valuable elements (Cu, Zn, Gd) in the Piracaia pluton occurred during two phases of the magmatic evolution. Cu and Zn were enriched in cumulates and Gd was concentrated in residual quartz-syenitic veins. Due to their homogeneous dark colour and texture, the monzodiorites are exploited both for polished dimension stones and supports for sensitive scientific instruments. (C) 2001 Elsevier B.V. Ltd.
