The growth of graphene by chemical vapor deposition on metal foils is a promising technique to deliver large-area films with high electron mobility. Nowadays, the chemical vapor deposition of hydrocarbons on copper is the most investigated synthesis method, although many other carbon precursors and metal substrates are used too. Among these, ethanol is a safe and inexpensive precursor that seems to offer favorable synthesis kinetics. We explored the growth of graphene on copper from ethanol, focusing on processes of short duration (up to one min). We investigated the produced films by electron microscopy, Raman and X-ray photoemission spectroscopy. A graphene film with high crystalline quality was found to cover the entire copper catalyst substrate in just 20 s, making ethanol appear as a more efficient carbon feedstock than methane and other commonly used precursors.

Biomolecules are chemical compounds found in living organisms which are the building blocks of life and perform important functions. Fluctuation from the normal concentration of these biomolecules in living system leads to several disorders. Thus the exact determination of them in human fluids is essential in the clinical point of view. High performance liquid chromatography, flow injection analysis, capillary electrophoresis, fluorimetry, spectrophotometry, electrochemical and chemiluminescence techniques were usually used for the determination of biologically important molecules. Among these techniques, electrochemical determination of biomolecules has several advantages over other methods viz., simplicity, selectivity and sensitivity. In the past two decades, electrodes modified with polymer films, self-assembled monolayers containing different functional groups and carbon paste have been used as electrochemical sensors. But in recent years, nanomaterials based electrochemical sensors play an important role in the improvement of public health because of its rapid detection, high sensitivity and specificity in clinical diagnostics. To date gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) have received arousing attention mainly due to their fascinating electronic and optical properties as a consequence of their reduced dimensions. These unique properties of AuNPs make them as an ideal candidate for the immobilization of enzymes for biosensing. Further, the electrochemical properties of AuNPs reveal that they exhibit interesting properties by enhancing the electrode conductivity, facilitating electron transfer and improving the detection limit of biomolecules. In this chapter, we summarized the different strategies used for the attachment of AuNPs on electrode surfaces and highlighted the electrochemical determination of glucose, ascorbic acid (AA), uric acid (UA) and dopamine derivatives using the AuNPs modified electrodes.

We describe a design and fabrication method to enable simpler manufacturing of more efficient organic solar cell modules using a modified flat panel deposition technique. Many mini-cell pixels are individually connected to each other in parallel forming a macro-scale solar cell array. The pixel size of each array is optimized through experimentation to maximize the efficiency of the whole array. We demonstrate that integrated organic solar cell modules with a scalable current output can be fabricated in this fashion and can also be connected in series to generate a scalable voltage output.

High efficiency organic photovoltaic cells discussed in literature are normally restricted to devices fabricated on glass substrates. This is a consequence of the extreme brittleness and inflexibility of the commonly used transparent conductive oxide electrode, indium tin oxide (ITO). This shortcoming of ITO along with other concerns such as increasing scarcity of indium, migration of indium to organic layer, etc. makes it imperative to move away from ITO. Here we demonstrate a highly flexible Ag electrode that possesses low sheet resistances even in ultra-thin layers. It retains its conductivity under severe bending stresses where ITO fails completely. A P3HT:PCBM blend organic solar cell fabricated on this highly flexible electrode gives an efficiency of 2.3%.

Gelatin-g-poly(methyl acrylate) and gelatin-g-poly(acrylonitrile) copolymers were prepared in an aqueous medium using K2S2O8 initiator. A plausible mechanism has been put forward for the observed grafting behavior of monomers. Gelatin-g-PAN showed a greater resistance to mixed bacterial inolucum compared to gelatin-g-PMA samples. The rate of degradation decreased with the increase in grafting efficiency. A parallel set of experiments carried out by employing the samples as the only source of both carbon and nitrogen showed a marginal but definite increase in the utilization of the polymer. The nitrogen analysis also showed the utilization of the polymer. Scanning electron micographs of the polymer films do show extensive pitting after microbiological testing.

Plasma polymerisation was used to deposit thin oligomeric films of terpinen-4-ol on a range of substrates. The coatings were examined in terms of their chemical properties and surface architecture to ascertain the changes in chemical composition as a result of exposure to the plasma field. The antifouling and antimicrobial activity of oligomeric terpinen-4-ol coatings were then examined against such human pathogens as Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus epidermis. The bacterial adhesion patterns were investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and confocal scanning laser microscopy (CSLM).

For the purposes of obtaining a number of components with nearly identical thickness distributions over the substrate area and of minimizing the inhomogeneities of the film, it is logical to presume that a substrate rotating on its own axis and revolving around another axis will give more uniformity in film thickness than a substrate only revolving around one axis. In relation to the practical applications, an investigation has been undertaken to study the refinement that can be achieved by using a planar planetary substrate holder. It is shown theoretically that the use of the planetary substrate holder under ideal conditions of source and geometry does not offer any further improvement in uniformity of thickness over the conventional rotary work-holder. It is also shown that the geometrical parameters alone have little influence over the uniformity achieved on a planetary substrate, because of the complex cyclidal motion of any point on it. However, for any given geometry, a non-integral speed ratio of the planetary substrate and the work-holder shows considerably less variation in thickness over the substrate area.

Tribology of a well known solid lubricant molybdenum disulphide is studied here in water and oil medium, over a large range of contact dimensions. Lateral force microscopy is used to identify the deformation modes, intra-crystalline slip, plastic grooving, fragmentation and fracture, of single particles The medium and agglomeration were found to dictate the deformation mode Steel on steel tribology lubricated by suspensions of these particles in liquid media was conducted over a range of contact pressure and sliding velocity. A scrutiny of the frictional data with the aid of Raman spectroscopy to identify the transfer film, suggested that the particle size, as it is at contact, is an important tribological parameter Ultrasonication of the suspension and dispersion of the particle by surfactants were used to control the apriori particle size fed into the suspension.Correspondence of friction data of the gently sonicated suspension with that of the ultrasonicated suspension with dispersants indicated the importance of liquid ingestion by these particles as it controls their mode of deformation and consequent tribology. Curves for the uniformity in film thickness on spherical substrates are drawn for various geometries. The optimum source-to-substrate height for maximum uniformity of the film thickness is determined. These data are approximated to achieve uniform thickness on a large number of small planar substrates loaded on a large spherical substrate holder, the appropriate geometry being selected on the basis of the radius of curvature of the substrate holder.

An interesting application of optical phase conjugation is phase conjugate interferometry. We report here a new approach to real-time interferometry which combines the high phase conjugate efficiency of photorefractive crystals and the fast response times offered by dye-doped polymer films by using a composite structure. The ability of this material to generate two independent but overlapping phase conjugate waves. which can interfere to reveal the phase changes in a test object, is discussed and demonstrated with a specific example.

The characteristics of the high pressure oxygen-sputtering plasma in the pressure range 0.8–2.4 mbar have been studied using the Langmuir probe technique. The variation in plasma parameters such as positive ion density, electron density, mean electron energy and floating potential with pressure and temperature has been investigated. It has been observed that the positive ion density increases at high substrate temperatures whereas the negative ion density decreases. The study of the variation in mean electron energy and floating potential also indicated the possibility that the number of negative ions is less when the substrates are at elevated temperatures. Since the negative ions are supposed to cause re-sputtering and make the films off-stoichiometric, the reduction in the negative ion density as observed at elevated substrate temperatures is better suited for depositing stoichiometric YBa2Cu3O7−δ superconducting thin films.

Zinc oxide (ZnO) and indium doped ZnO (IZO) thin films with different indium compositions were grown by pulsed laser deposition technique on corning glass substrate. The effect of indium concentration on the structural, morphological, optical and electrical properties of the film was studied. The films were oriented along c-direction with wurtzite structure and highly transparent with an average transmittance of more than 80% in the visible wavelength region. The energy band gap was found to decrease with increasing indium concentration. High transparency makes the films useful as optical windows while the high band gap values support the idea that the film could be a good candidate for optoelectronic devices. The value of resistivity observed to decrease initially with doping concentration and subsequently increases. IZO with 1% of indium showed the lowest resistivity of 2.41 x 10(-2) Omega cm and large transmittance in the visible wavelength region. Especially 1% IZO thin film was observed to be a suitable transparent conducting oxide material to potentially replace indium tin oxide. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Stem cell response to a library of scaffolds with varied 3D structures was investigated. Microarray screening revealed that each type of scaffold structure induced a unique gene expression signature in primary human bone marrow stromal cells (hBMSCs). Hierarchical cluster analysis showed that treatments sorted by scaffold structure and not by polymer chemistry suggesting that scaffold structure was more influential than scaffold composition. Further, the effects of scaffold structure on hBMSC function were mediated by cell shape. Of all the scaffolds tested, only scaffolds with a nanofibrous morphology were able to drive the hBMSCs down an osteogenic lineage in the absence of osteogenic supplements. Nanofiber scaffolds forced the hBMSCs to assume an elongated, highly branched morphology. This same morphology was seen in osteogenic controls where hBMSCs were cultured on flat polymer films in the presence of osteogenic supplements (OS). In contrast, hBMSCs cultured on flat polymer films in the absence of OS assumed a more rounded and less-branched morphology. These results indicate that cells are more sensitive to scaffold structure than previously appreciated and suggest that scaffold efficacy can be optimized by tailoring the scaffold structure to force cells into morphologies that direct them to differentiate down the desired lineage. In order to understand the influence of ductile metal interlayer on the overall deformation behavior of metal/nitride multilayer, different configurations of metal and nitride layers were deposited and tested under indentation loading. To provide insight into the trends in deformation with multilayer spacings, an FEM model with elastic-perfect plastic metal layers alternate with an elastic nitride on top of an elastic-plastic substrate. The strong strain mismatch between the metal and nitride layers significantly alters the stress field under contact loading leading to micro-cracking in the nitride, large tensile stresses immediately below the contact, and a transition from columnar sliding in thin metal films to a more uniform bending and microcracking in thicker coatings.
