Three-protein circadian oscillations in cyanobacteria sustain for weeks. To understand how cellular oscillations function robustly in stochastic fluctuating environments, we used a stochastic model to uncover two natures of circadian oscillation: the potential landscape related to steady-state probability distribution of protein concentrations; and the corresponding flux related to speed of concentration changes which drive the oscillations. The barrier height of escaping from the oscillation attractor on the landscape provides a quantitative measure of the robustness and coherence for oscillations against intrinsic and external fluctuations. The difference between the locations of the zero total driving force and the extremal of the potential provides a possible experimental probe and quantification of the force from curl flux. These results, correlated with experiments, can help in the design of robust oscillatory networks.

The dynamical Lie algebraic approach developed by Alhassid and Levine combined with intermediate picture is applied to the study of translational-vibrational energy transfer in the collinear collision between an atom and an anharmonic oscillator. We find that the presence of the anharmonic terms indeed has an effect on the vibrational probabilities of the oscillator. The computed probabilities are in good agreement with those obtained using exact quantum method. It is shown that the approach of dynamical Lie algebra combining with intermediate picture is reasonable in the treating of atom-anharmonic oscillator scattering.

This paper discusses the use of relation algebra operations on formal contexts. These operations are a generalisation of some of the context operations that are described in the standard FCA textbook (Ganter & Wille, 1999). This paper extends previous research in this area with respect to applications and implementations. It also describes a software tool (FcaFlint) which in combination with FcaStone facilitates the application of relation algebra operations to contexts stored in many formats.

Er i'r llyfr gael ei ddefnyddio dros y blynyddoedd gan nifer o fyfyrwyr yn Aberystwyth a oedd yn cyflwyno eu gwaith yn Gymraeg, nid oedd ar gael yn y Gymraeg. Dyma, o'r diwedd, ymgais i wneud rhyw fath o iawn am hynny. Er bod y llyfr wedi bod allan o brint yn y Saesneg ers rhai blynyddoedd yn awr, mae'n amlwg ei fod yn dal i gael ei gymeradwyo mewn nifer o brifysgolion. Felly, y gobaith yw y bydd o ddefnydd. Efallai mai'r peth nesaf bydd ei gyfiethu'n ?l i'r Saesneg! Mae nifer o newidiadau yn y fersiwn hwn. A biomechanical model of the human oculomotor plant kinematics in 3-D as a function of muscle length changes is presented. It can represent a range of alternative interpretations of the data as a function of one parameter. The model is free from such deficits as singularities and the nesting of axes found in alternative formulations such as the spherical wrist (Paul, l98l). The equations of motion are defined on a quaternion based representation of eye rotations and are compact atnd computationally efficient.

The radiation loss in the escaping light cone with a two-dimensional (2D) photonic crystal slab microcavity can be suppressed by means of cladding the low-Q slab microcavity by three-dimensional woodpile photonic crystals with the complete bandgap when the resonance frequency is located inside the complete bandgap. It is confirmed that the hybrid microcavity based on a low-Q, single-defect photonic crystal slab microcavity shows improvement of the Q factor without affecting the mode volume and modal frequency. Whereas 2D slab microcavities exhibit Q saturation with an increase in the number of layers, for the analyzed hybrid microcavities with a small gap between the slab and woodpiles, the Q factor does not saturate.

We verify numerically and experimentally the accuracy of an analytical model used to derive the effective nonlinear susceptibilities of a varactor-loaded split ring resonator (VLSRR) magnetic medium. For the numerical validation, a nonlinear oscillator model for the effective magnetization of the metamaterial is applied in conjunction with Maxwell equations and the two sets of equations solved numerically in the time-domain. The computed second harmonic generation (SHG) from a slab of a nonlinear material is then compared with the analytical model. The computed SHG is in excellent agreement with that predicted by the analytical model, both in terms of magnitude and spectral characteristics. Moreover, experimental measurements of the power transmitted through a fabricated VLSRR metamaterial at several power levels are also in agreement with the model, illustrating that the effective medium techniques associated with metamaterials can accurately be transitioned to nonlinear systems.
