A linear array of n calcite crystals is shown to allow the generation of a high contrast (> 10: 1) train of 2(n) high energy (> 100 mu J) pulses from a single ultrafast laser pulse. Advantage is taken of the pulse-splitting properties of a single birefringent crystal, where an incident laser pulse can be split into two pulses with orthogonal polarizations and equal intensity, separated temporally in proportion to the thickness of the crystal traversed and the difference in refractive indices of the two optic axes. In the work presented here an array of seven calcite crystals of sequentially doubled thickness is used to produce a train of 128 pulses, each of femtosecond duration. Readily versatile properties such as the number of pulses in the train and variable mark-space ratio are realized from such a setup. (c) 2007 Optical Society of America

The influence of annular aperture parameters on the optical transmission through arrays of coaxial apertures in a metal film on high refractive index substrates has been investigated experimentally and numerically. It is shown that the transmission resonances are related to plasmonic crystal effects rather than frequency cutoff behavior associated with annular apertures. The role of deviations from ideal aperture shape occurring during the fabrication process has also been studied. Annular aperture arrays are often considered in many applications for achieving high optical transmission through metal films and understanding of nanofabrication tolerances are important. Nonlinear optics is an essential component of modern laser systems and optoelectronic devices. It has also emerged as an important tool in probing the electronic, vibrational, magnetic, and crystallographic structure of materials ranging from oxides and metals, to polymers and biological samples. This review focuses on the specific technique of optical second harmonic generation (SHG), and its application in probing ferroelectric complex oxide crystals and thin films. As the dominant SHG interaction mechanism exists only in materials that lack inversion symmetry, SHG is a sensitive probe of broken inversion symmetry, and thus also of bulk polar phenomena in materials. By performing in-situ SHG polarimetry experiments in different experimental conditions such as sample orientation, applied electric field, and temperature, one can probe ferroelectric hysteresis loops and phase transitions. Careful modeling of the polarimetry data allows for the determination of the point group symmetry of the crystal. In epitaxial thin films with a two-dimensional arrangement of well-defined domain orientations, one can extract information about intrinsic material properties such as nonlinear coefficients, as well as microstructural information such as the local statistics of the different domain variants being probed. This review presents several detailed examples of ferroelectric systems where such measurements and modeling are performed. The use of SHG microscopic imaging is discussed, and its ability to reveal domain structures and phases not normally visible with linear optics is illustrated.

This Letter reports in situ Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopic data on thermal TiO films fabricated by heating titanium plates in air at 475, 700 and 800 °C. The films were studied in the dark and under UV-irradiation in aqueous 0.1MNaClO in the presence and absence of 0.1 M Na(OOC) and at 10, 25 and 50 °C. The film fabricated at 800 °C showed a broad feature near 1580cm under UV-irradiation that was not observed in the dark, whilst the films fabricated at lower temperatures, 475 and 700 °C, showed no such feature. This feature appears to be associated with the accumulation of surface-mobile holes at the complex, porous film-electrolyte interface and the capacity of such holes to enhance the absorption cross-section of optical phonons characteristic of the rutile crystal form at and near the surface of the TiO/electrolyte interface. © 2001 Elsevier Science B.V.

An electronically reconfigurable Rotman lens is described which generates multiple beams that can be switched from monopulse sum to difference radiation patterns when used in conjunction with a six element Vivaldi antenna array. This is achieved by exploiting the voltage-dependent dielectric anisotropy property of nematic state liquid crystals to provide switched 0 degrees and 180 degrees phase shifts in the array feed lines. The viability of the concept is demonstrated by designing an antenna which exhibits dynamically reconfigurable monopulse radiation patterns over the frequency band 6-10 GHz. Measured and simulated results are shown to be in good agreement. (c) 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

We address the generation of fully inseparable three-mode entangled states of radiation by interlinked nonlinear interactions in chi((2)) media. We show how three-mode entanglement can be used to realize symmetric and asymmetric telecloning machines, which achieve optimal fidelity for coherent states. An experimental implementation involving a single nonlinear crystal in which the two interactions take place simultaneously is suggested. Preliminary experimental results showing the feasibility and the effectiveness of the interaction scheme with a seeded crystal are also presented. (C) 2004 Optical Society of America.

TiO2 photocatalysis is a promising technology for the destruction of organic pollutants in both waste and potable waters with the mineralisation of a wide range of compounds having been reported. TiO 2 has many advantages over other semiconductors, it is highly photoreactive, cheap, non-toxic, chemically and biologically inert, and photostable. The photocatalytic activity of TiO2 has been shown to depend upon many criteria including the ratio of anatase/rutile crystal phase, particle size and oxidation state. This paper reports the use of optical surface second harmonic generation (SSHG) to monitor modifications in TiO 2 powder induced following laser treatment. SSHG is a non-contact, non-destructive technique, which is highly sensitive to both surface chemical and physical changes. Results show that three different SSH intensities were observable as the TiO2 samples were irradiated with the laser light. These regions were related to changes in chemical characteristics and particle size of the TiO2 powder

We present a comprehensive model for predicting the full performance of a second harmonic generation-optical parametric amplification system that aims at enhancing the temporal contrast of laser pulses. The model simultaneously takes into account all the main parameters at play in the system such as the group velocity mismatch, the beam divergence, the spectral content, the pump depletion, and the length of the nonlinear crystals. We monitor the influence of the initial parameters of the input pulse and the interdependence of the two related non-linear processes on the performance of the system and show its optimum configuration. The influence of the initial beam divergence on the spectral and the temporal characteristics of the generated pulse is discussed. In addition, we show that using a crystal slightly longer than the optimum length and introducing small delay between the seed and the pump ensures maximum efficiency and compensates for the spectral shift in the optical parametric amplification stage in case of chirped input pulse. As an example, calculations for bandwidth transform limited and chirped pulses of sub-picosecond duration in beta barium borate crystal are presented.

Probing micro-/nano-sized surface conformations, which are ubiquitous in biological systems, by using liquid crystal droplets, which change their ordering and optical appearance in response to the presence of more than ten times smaller cellulose based micro/nano fibers, might find new uses in a range of biological environments and sensors. Previous studies indicate that electrospun micro/nano cellulosic fibers produced from liquid crystalline solutions could present a twisted form [1]. In this work, we study the structures of nematic liquid crystal droplets threaded by cellulose fibers prepared from liquid crystalline and isotropic solutions as well as droplets pierced by spider-made fibers [2]. Planar anchoring at the fibers and planar and homeotropic at the drop surfaces allowed probing cellulose fibers different helical structures as well as aligned filaments.

The perovskite crystal structure is host to many different materials from insulating to superconducting providing a diverse range of intrinsic character and complexity. A better fundamental description of these materials in terms of their electronic, optical and magnetic properties undoubtedly precedes an effective realization of their application potential. SmTiOa, a distorted perovskite has a strongly localized electronic structure and undergoes an antiferromagnetic transition at 50 K in its nominally stoichiometric form. Sr2Ru04 is a layered perovskite superconductor (ie. Tc % 1 K) bearing the same structure as the high-tem|>erature superconductor La2_xSrrCu04. Polarized reflectance measurements were carried out on both of these materials revealing several interesting features in the far-infrared range of the spectrum. In the case of SmTiOa, although insulating, evidence indicates the presence of a finite background optical conductivity. As the temperature is lowered through the ordering temperature a resonance feature appears to narrow and strengthen near 120 cm~^ A nearby phonon mode appears to also couple to this magnetic transition as revealed by a growing asymmetry in the optica] conductivity. Experiments on a doped sample with a greater itinerant character and lower Neel temperature = 40 K also indicate the presence of this strongly temperature dependent mode even at twice the ordering temperature. Although the mode appears to be sensitive to the magnetic transition it is unclear whether a magnon assignment is appropriate. At very least, evidence suggests an interesting interaction between magnetic and electronic excitations. Although Sr2Ru04 is highly anisotropic it is metallic in three-dimensions at low temperatures and reveals its coherent transport in an inter-plane Drude-like component to the highest temperatures measured (ie. 90 K). An extended Drude analysis is used to probe the frequency dependent scattering character revealing a peak in both the mass enhancement and scattering rate near 80 cm~* and 100 cm~* respectively. All of these experimental observations appear relatively consistent with a Fermi-liquid picture of charge transport. To supplement the optical measurements a resistivity station was set up with an event driven object oriented user interface. The program controls a Keithley Current Source, HP Nano-Voltmeter and Switching Unit as well as a LakeShore Temperature Controller in order to obtain a plot of the Resistivity as a function of temperature. The system allows for resistivity measurements ranging from 4 K to 290 K using an external probe or between 0.4 K to 295 K using a Helium - 3 Cryostat. Several materials of known resistivity have confirmed the system to be robust and capable of measuring metallic samples distinguishing features of several fiQ-cm.

The wavelength dependence of thermal lens signal from organic dyes are studied using dual beam thermal lens technique. It is found that the profile of thermal lens spectrum widely differ from the conventional absorption spectrum in the case of rhodamine B unlike in the case of crystal violet. This is explained on the basis of varying contribution of nonradiative relaxations from the excited vibronic levels.

Organic nonlinear optical single crystals of Methyl para-Hydroxy Benzoate (MHB) have been grown using gel-solution technique. These crystals are cut along z-axis and are bombarded with Ag14+ ions of energy 100 MeV. The results show an increase in refractive index at the ion irradiated region. The dielectric constant of the irradiated crystal is increased more than 15 times compared to that of a nonirradiated crystal. The result of these changes and comparative study of second harmonic generation (SHG) efficiency before and after irradiation is discussed.

The present work deals with the complexation of Schiff bases of aroylhydrazines with various transition metal ions. The hydrazone systems selected for study have long 7I:-delocalized chain in the ligand molecule itself, which get intensified due to metal-to-ligand or ligand-to-metal charge transfer excitations upon coordination. Complexation with metal ions like copper, nickel, cobalt, manganese, iron, zinc and cadmium are tried. Various spectral techniques are employed for characterization. The structures of some complexes have been well established by single crystal X-ray diffraction studies. The nonIinaer optical studies of the ligands and complexes synthesized have been studied by hyper-Rayleigh scattering technique. The work is presented in seven chapters and the last one deals with summary and conclusion. One of the hydrazone system selected for study proved that it could give rise to polymeric metal complexes. Some of the copper, nickel, zinc and cadmium complexes showed non-linear optical activity. The NLO studies of manganese and iron showed negative result, may be due to the inversion centre of symmetry within the molecular lattice.
