Two-photon absorption and self-phase modulation in InGaAsP/InP multi-quantum-well waveguides

We report the first measurement of two-photon absorption (TPA) and self-phase modulation in an InGaAsP/InP multi-quantum-well waveguide. The TPA coefficient, β2, was found to be 60±10 cm/GW at 1.55 μm. Despite operating at 200 nm from the band edge, self-phase modulation as high as 8±2 rad was observed for 30-ps optical pulses at 3.8-W peak input power. A theoretical calculation indicates that this enhanced phase modulation is primarily due to bandfilling in the quantum wells and the free-carrier plasma effect.

Negligible penalty all-optical routing using a 12 × 12 passive InP wavelength-selective router

This work demonstrates transmission at 2.5 Gbit/s across two wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) network nodes, constructed using counter-propagating semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) wavelength converters and an integrated wavelength-selective router separated by 45 km of fiber, with an overall penalty of 0.6 dB. Minimal degradation of the eye diagram is evident across the whole system. Full utilization of the capacity of the router would allow an aggregate 360-Gbit/s node capacity for a WDM channel of 2.5 Gb/s.

Fabrication of test structures for 4×4 InP/InGaAsP integrated optical matrix

A novel optical switching matrix measuring 1×2 mm2 in size is fabricated. The switching matrix is composed of waveguides, four 1×4 multimode interference (MMI) splitters, 32 total internal refraction mirrors and four 4×1 MMI combiners with the extremely compact size of 1×2 mm2. This integrated device are assessed and loss contribution measured from test structure is presented.

Friction and material transfer in micro-scale sliding contact between aluminium alloy and steel

A ball-on-flat reciprocating micro-tribometer has been used to measure the friction coefficient between aluminium alloy strip and a steel ball. A relatively small ball and correspondingly low contact load is used to give a contact width of the order of 100μm, closer to asperity contact widths than generally found for this type of test. The effects of load, initial strip surface roughness, lubricants and boundary additives are investigated. It is found that the friction coefficient is significantly reduced by the addition of a lubricant. Observations of the wear tracks and ball surface show that the material transfer from aluminium to the ball is reduced in the presence of the lubricant. The initial friction coefficient is further reduced by the addition of a boundary additive, but the friction coefficient after 8 cycles is unchanged. Studies on the preparation of fish silage. 1. Effect of quality of raw material and type of acid

An experiment was undertaken in which silver bellies (Leiognathus splendens) of different quality were used to produce silages using different concentrations of hydrochloric acid and formic acid. The quality and storage life of the various preparations are reported. Silages which keep for at least 30 days can be produced from silver belly held for 3 or 12 hours at 28°C by: 1) reducing the pH by addition of hydrochloric acid; 2) adding 0.5% formic acid and reducing the pH to 3.5 with hydrochloric acid; or 3) adding 2.5% formic acid.

Durability study of eleven years old cement-bentonite cut-off wall material

Comprehensive understanding of the long-term performance of cement-bentonite slurry trench cut-off walls is essential as these mixes may degrade when exposed to aggressive environments or when subjected to prolonged drying. A series of wetting-drying and immersion experiments was carried out to evaluate the durability characteristics of laboratory mixed samples and block field samples from 40 days to 11 years of age. For the wetting-drying tests, the samples buried in medium graded sand were subjected to periodical flooding and drying cycles. They were then used for permeability testing and unconfined compressive strength (UCS) testing. For the immersion tests, the samples confined in perforated molds were submerged in magnesium sulfate solution for 16 weeks and their microstructures were then analyzed using X-ray diffraction (XRD) technique. This paper identifies the effects of contaminant exposure on durability of cement-bentonite and the effects of aging by comparing 11 years old samples to younger samples. Test results showed that young or previously contaminated cement-bentonite mixes are more susceptible to sulfate attack than old or less contaminated mixes. Copyright ASCE 2008.

Observations on the wastage of raw material and recovery of meat in the prawn processing industry

The wastage of prawns due to spoilage in processing factories accounted to about 0-12% in 1974, 0-35% in 1975, 0-3% in 1976 and 0-4% in 1977. Spoilage increases with the time lag between catching and processing and also due to defective icing. The paper discusses the counts of whole prawns required for obtaining meat of specified size grades.

Raw material supply to shrimp freezing plants: some significant aspects

The shrimp processing plants located at any particular place receive their raw material supplies from local and outside centres. The raw material received, the form in which it was received, the relative contribution by local and outside centres and the seasonal variation in the supplies were studied with respect to the shrimp processing plants located at three places - Cochin, Veraval and Kakinada.
