This in-situ analysis quantifies hydrogen sulfide gas emission from a simulated sewerage system, with varying slopes between 0.5% and 1.5%, under the dosing of certain mitigating chemicals. A portable H₂S gas detector (OdaLog) was employed to record the gaseous phase concentration of hydrogen sulfide. The investigation was comprised of three interrelated phases. In the first stage, precision of four prediction models for H₂S gas emission from a laboratory-synthesized wastewater was assessed. It was found that the model suggested by Lahav fitted the experimental results accurately. Second phase explorations included jar tests to obtain the optimal dosage of four hydrogen sulfide suppressing chemicals, being Mg(OH)₂, NaOH, Ca(NO₃)₂, and FeCl₂. In the third stage, the optimal dosage of chemicals was introduced into the experimental sewerage system, with the OdaLog continuously monitoring the H₂S gas emission. According to a baseline (experiments with no chemical addition), it was found that NaOH and Mg(OH)₂ performed very good in mitigating the release of H₂S gas, while Ca(NO₃)₂ was not effective most probably due to the absence of biological activity. Furthermore, interpretation of OdaLog data through the optimum emission prediction model revealed that higher sewer slope led to more emission.

There are high expectations of the educational value of online games and immersive, virtual worlds. Digital games, if used for educational purposes, it is argued, have the capacity to transform learning, engage disenchanted students, address major differences in experience and orientation in out-of-school and in-school contexts, teach twenty-first-century literacies and prepare learners to become tech savvy, critical and agential participants – ‘knowledge workers’ (Gee et al., 1996) – in a technologically saturated world. As governments and other institutions seek to respond to rapid and massive technological change, the use of games-based learning via online and mobile Internet-based technologies is seen as providing much potential for innovative, effective and accessible contemporary teaching and learning. While there is considerable enthusiasm for the use of games to support learning, however, research focusing on these areas is fragmented and provides a more mixed picture of their use.Games studies as an interdisciplinary field is informed by quite different research traditions and trajectories, each with its own epistemological framework and assumptions. In this chapter, the focus is on games and learning as they relate to formal educational contexts, particularly schools. The chapter begins with an overview of some of the key issues and assumptions related to the use of online games for educational purposes. This is followed by a discussion of four major disciplinary orientations towards games: perspectives and approaches drawn from humanities and social science; explorations of literacy and media production from media and cultural studies; the study of games themselves within the formally designated, eponymous area of games studies; and technical and educational approaches based in the fields of e-learning and instructional design. This section concludes with an extended discussion of the use of Second Life, which canvasses the main approaches to its use, and goes on to provide a detailed account of the use of Second Life to foster argumentative knowledge construction in Singapore secondary schools (Jamaludin et al., 2009). This is followed by an account of ongoing tensions between research traditions and a discussion of issues for further development and insights for the future. The chapter concludes with a summary of key points and suggestions for further reading in the games and learning area.

This paper explores the Eden mythology in both western and eastern cultures, and its reflection on people’s perception and use of nature. It aims to examine how cultural ideologies and systems of beliefs in relation to Eden have affected landscape making and how landscape icons influenced other cultures subsequently. This study describes how narratives of Eden evolved and influenced landscape design by explaining the narratives of Paradise and Arcadia in eastern and western cultures as two distinct landscape narratives, with a brief history of their emergence and evolution. It discusses the ways in which landscape architecture reflects the prevailing attitudes towards nature in a society by studying the ancient world’s philosophies and ideologies as a starting-point for this investigation. The paper then focuses on the Persian paradise garden and explains the notion of iconography, as a visual explanation of an idea in landscape design. It projects the transformation of Persian paradise gardens’ icons and patterns in landscape architecture through historical and spatial explorations.

This volume is a series of explorations of language policy from a discursive perspective. Its chief aim is to systematically explore the interconnectedness of language policy and discourse through what we are terming ‘discursive approaches to language policy’ (DALP). We show that language policy is a multilayered phenomenon that is constituted and enacted in and through discourse (which is defined more closely in Sect. 1.2). Language policy is a fast-growing, vibrant, and interdisciplinary field of inquiry that offers a variety of theoretical frameworks, methodologies, analytic approaches, and empirical findings: the framing sections at the beginning of each part of this volume and the commentary at the end frame the discussion of developments in language policy and especially the role of DALP therein.

The aim of the article is to present the place and the role of contemporary Francophone Sub-Saharan African literature in Sweden. This study attempts to compare three levels in the circulation of literary works: translation, reception, and content. These dimensions converge in the analysis in order to pin down the place and the role of this literature in the Swedish context. The study is delimited to writers born after the independencies. The results show that contemporary francophone novels translated and categorized as African are dominated by female writers. The critique reveals a semantic field stressing the theme of shame in the novels by these six female authors, which is examined through in-depth analysis of one novel from each author. Preliminary conclusions are that Francophone African literature is present on the Swedish market since the independencies and even before, though, contemporary works translated into Swedish are produced in the diaspora. A comparison between the three studied levels show that female writers contribute to the shaping of African literature in Sweden to a great extent, even though literary critics sometimes judge them severely. Their explorations of aesthetic forms marry a new discretely engaged literature, constructive rather than vindictive. In this literature, the core issue of facing the shame is presented as a way to reach individual and collective dignity.

Preliminary explorations of the annihilation electrogenerated chemiluminescence (ECL) of mixed metal complexes have revealed opportunities to enhance emission intensities and control the relative intensities from multiple luminophores through the applied potentials. However, the mechanisms of these systems are only poorly understood. Herein, we present a comprehensive characterisation of the annihilation ECL of mixtures of tris(2,2′-bipyridine)ruthenium(ii) hexafluorophosphate ([Ru(bpy)3](PF6)2) and fac-tris(2-phenylpyridine)iridium(iii) ([Ir(ppy)3]). This includes a detailed investigation of the change in emission intensity from each luminophore as a function of both the applied electrochemical potentials and the relative concentrations of the two complexes, and a direct comparison with two mixed (Ru/Ir) ECL systems for which emission from only the ruthenium-complex was previously reported. Concomitant emission from both luminophores was observed in all three systems, but only when: (1) the applied potentials were sufficient to generate the intermediates required to form the electronically excited state of both complexes; and (2) the concentration of the iridium complex (relative to the ruthenium complex) was sufficient to overcome quenching processes. Both enhancement and quenching of the ECL of the ruthenium complex was observed, depending on the experimental conditions. The observations were rationalised through several complementary mechanisms, including resonance energy transfer and various energetically favourable electron-transfer pathways.

While the integration of media content with live performance is nothing new, it is perhaps an increasing awareness of the pervasiveness of screens in our daily lives that has inspired a recent trend in Melbourne contemporary dance towards explorations that bring the two together.
