While researchers have extensively evaluated the beneficial effects of coffee consumption in reducing the frequency of certain diseases, studies examining the differences between organic and conventional coffee intake are still needed. Therefore, this paper aims to investigate the functional effects of organic and conventional coffee by examining both its chemical composition and its mutagenic/antimutagenic properties. Infusions of 10% or 20% (w/v) of organic and conventional coffee were administered by gavage (10 mL/kg b.w., once or twice a day) to male Swiss mice against doxorubicin (DXR) and 1,2-dimethylhydrazine dihydrochloride (DMH)-induced mutagenicity. The levels of chlorogenic acids, caffeine and trigonelline from the coffee infusions and oxidative stress analysis from the liver were measured by HPLC. Gut and bone marrow micronucleus assays were used as mutagenic/antimutagenic endpoints, as well as the crypt measurements and gut apoptosis index. The in vivo tests revealed that only organic coffee exerted protective effects, despite oxidative stress analysis and crypt measurements not showing differences among treatments. Intriguingly, the low dose (10% w/v mL/kg) displayed a robust protective effect that showed a significant reduction in bone marrow micronuclei (26.8%), gut micronuclei (11.5%) and apoptosis (27.8%), whereas the higher coffee dose (2 × 20% w/v) only showed a protective effect against bone marrow micronucleus (43.7%). These results highlight that organic coffee could be considered to have beneficial functional effects, although it is still a challenge to define conclusions from analytical data and all the possible interactions from this complex food matrix. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd. Knowing the structure and distribution of nutrients in plant tissues can clarify some mechanisms of pathogen attack in plants and plant defense against infection, thus helping management strategies. The aim of this study was verify differences in distribution of mineral nutrients in coffee leaf tissues around foliar lesions of bacterial blight of coffee, blister spot, cercospora leaf, phoma leaf spot and coffee leaf rust. Fragments of leaf tissue surrounding the lesions were dehydrated in silica gel, carbon covered and subjected to X-ray microanalysis (MAX). Thirty-three chemical elements were detected in leaf tissue; however, there was variation in potassium and calcium contents surrounding the lesions. The highest potassium content was found in asymptomatic tissues surrounding the lesions, decreasing toward the transition zone and reaching minimum content in symptomatic tissues. The highest calcium content was found in symptomatic tissues, decreasing toward the transition zone and reaching minimum content in asymptomatic tissues. Therefore, MAX can be used to analyze the composition and distribution of nutrients in plant tissues and, if associated with mineral nutrition, it may help understand host-pathogen relationships and plant disease management.

Among the crops commercially exploited in Brazil, the coffee has a great economic importance, especially in the states of Minas Gerais and Espirito Santo. In the search for higher yield and lower environmental impact, farmers and researchers seek to develop new technologies that result in greater efficiency in various production processes of the coffee. For this, the adoption of precision agriculture in the management of operations in coffee crops, called precision coffee, has shown results that justify its use, by identifying the spatial variability of several variables, allowing its localized management and in the proper intensity. Unlike conventional management that is based on the average of observations in an area, precision agriculture uses a more detailed sampling, based on a sampling grid, which allows to represent in greater detail the reality of farming. Many previous studies have identified the spatial variability of the production of coffee system variables, but without worrying about the quality of information obtained due to the sampling grid used as precision and accuracy. Given the above, the objective of this study was to evaluate the quality of four different sampling grids for different variables and three times, in order to identify the most appropriate grid for use in precision coffee. Also aimed to compare the results between the precision coffee and conventional, according to reference values.

A novel carbon composite was prepared from a mixture of coffee waste and clay with inorganic:organic ratio of 1.3 (CC-1.3). The mixture was pyrolysed at 700 °C. Considering the application of this adsorbent for removal of anionic dyes, the CC-1.3 was treated with a 6 mol L-1 HCl for 24 h to obtain ACC-1.3. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), N2 adsorption/desorption curves, scanning electron microscope (SEM) and powder X-ray diffractometry (XRD) were used for characterisation of CC-1.3 and ACC-1.3 carbon adsorbents. The adsorbents were effectively utilised for removal of reactive blue 19 (RB-19) and reactive violet 5 (RV-5) textile dyes from aqueous solutions. The maximum amounts of RB-19 dye adsorbed at 25 °C are 63.59 (CC-1.3) and 110.6 mg g-1 (ACC-1.3), and 54.34 (CC-1.3) and 94.32 mg g-1 (ACC-1.3) for RV-5 dye. Four simulated dye-house effluents were used to test the application of the adsorbents for treatment of effluents.

A imigração européia para a região sudeste do país, que foi responsável pela introdução da mão-de-obra assalariada, para atender às necessidades da cultura cafeeira, nas últimas décadas do século XIX e primeiras do século XX, tem sido suficientemente estudada pela historiografia da imigração. O que tem sido explorado em menor grau, é a inter-relação entre a imigração e a reforma sanitária que ocorreu no período. O estado de São Paulo, particularmente, foi palco de uma triste história de imigrantes italianos chegados e expostos à virulência das epidemias. Esse foi o ponto de partida para o início do movimento de reforma da saúde pública. Os fazendeiros consideravam a imigração uma necessidade vital para a economia cafeeira, havendo um consenso bastante forte entre as elites e o governo da necessidade de mostrar ao mundo que o Brasil estava disposto a combater sua má reputação em matéria de saúde pública. O pensamento reformista e a ação elegeramos imigrantes como principal alvo da política de saúde. Desta forma, o presente trabalho apresenta dados sobre essas ações e discute a maneira como os países estrangeiros – particularmente a Itália – enviaram ao Brasil agentes e inspetores, médicos, engenheiros e outros profissionais, no sentido de verificarem as reais condições de vida, de trabalho e de saúde de seus conterrâneos tanto nas áreas rurais como nas urbanas. Um dos fenômenos que resultaram dos esforços dos inspetores sanitários foi a consolidação de um mercado de trabalho para médicos italianos e a abertura de hospitais italianos em São Paulo e outras regiões do estado. O impacto da imigração e a consolidação da profissão médica, afetados pela vinda desses profissionais a São Paulo, são os focos principais deste trabalho.
