This study evaluated the effect of mechanical cycling on the bond strength of fiber posts bonded to root dentin. The hypotheses examined were that bond strength is not changed after fatigue testing and bond strength does not present vast variations according to the type of fiber post. Sixty crownless, single-rooted human teeth were endodontically treated, with the space prepared at 12 mm. Thirty specimens received a quartz fiber post (Q-FRC (DT Light-Post), and the remaining 30 specimens received a glass fiber post (G-FRC) (FRC Postec Plus). All the posts were resin luted (All Bond+Duolink), and each specimen was embedded in a cylinder with epoxy resin. The specimens were divided into six groups: G1-Q-FRC+no cycling, G2- Q-FRC+20,000 cycles (load: 50N, angle of 45 degrees; frequency: 8Hz); G3- Q-FRC+2,000,000 cycles; G4- G-FRC+no cycling; G5- G-FRC+20,000 cycles; G6- GFRC+2,000,000 cycles. The specimens were cut perpendicular to their long axis, forming 2-mm thick disc-samples, which were submitted to the push-out test. ANOVA (alpha=.05) revealed that: (a) QFRC (7.1 +/- 2.2MPa) and G-FRC (6.9 +/- 2.1MPa) were statistically similar (p=0.665); (b) the no cycling groups (7.0 +/- 2.4MPa), 20,000 cycles groups (7.0 +/- 2.1MPa) and 2,000,000 cycles groups (7.0 +/- 2.0MPa) were statistically similar (p=0.996). It concluded that mechanical cycling did not affect the bond strength of two fiber posts bonded to dentin.

The reaction of Cu(NO3)(2).3H(2)O with 1,3-propanediamine (pn), in the presence of NaN3, afforded a 1:1 co-crystal formed by [Cu(NO3)(2)(pn)(2)] and [Cu(N-3)(NO3)(pn)(2)] (1 and 2), which were characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy and single crystal X-ray diffraction. In both compounds, the copper(II) centers are in a distorted octahedral environment, formed by four N atoms of two bidentate pn ligands in the basal plane, whereas the axial bonds are formed by two O atoms from the nitrate ligands in 1 and one O atom from the nitrate ligand and one N atom from the azide ion in 2. The asymmetric unit of the crystal consists of two crystallographically independent 1 and 2 complexes, which are held together in a 3D network by a series of N - H center dot center dot center dot O and N - H center dot center dot center dot N hydrogen bonds, as well C - H center dot center dot center dot O interactions. New supramolecular synthons are identified by the occurrence of two geometrically distinct molecular recognition patterns involving the NO3- ion and amino groups from pn ligands.

The aim of this paper is to present a procedure that utilizes C-13 NMR for identification of substituent groups which are bonded to carbon skeletons of natural products. For so much was developed a new version of the program (MACRONO), that presents a database with 161 substituent types found in the most varied terpenoids. This new version was widely tested in the identification of the substituents of 60 compounds that, after removal of the signals that did not belong to the carbon skeleton, served to test the prediction of skeletons by using other programs of the expert system (SISTEMAT). This work describes the synthesis and characterization of two novel Pd(II) pyrazolyl complexes of the type [PdX2(HdmPz)(2)](n) {X=SCN- (1), N-3(-) (2); HdmPz=3,5-dimethylpyrazole} that self-assemble through N-H...NCS or N-H...NNN hydrogen bonds to yield infinite one-dimensional chains, as confirmed by single crystal X-ray study on 1. The expected solid state polymeric structure for 2 is slowly broken up in CHCl3 Solution, leading to an equilibrium mixture of cis and trans-[Pd(N-3)(2)(HdmPz)(2)] monomers, as demonstrated by time-dependent IR and NMR studies. This study evaluated the influence of the cementation length of glass fiber-reinforced composite (FRC) on the fatigue resistance of bovine teeth restored with an adhesively cemented FRC. Thirty roots of single-rooted bovine teeth were allocated to 3 groups (n = 10), according to the ratio of crown length/root length (post cementation length): group 1 = 2/3, group 2 = 1/2, and group 3 = 1/1. The roots were prepared, the fiber posts (FRC Postec Plus) were cemented, and the specimens were submitted to 2 million mechanical cycles. After fatigue testing, a score was given based on the number of fatigue cycles until fracture, and data were submitted to statistical analysis. All specimens were resistant to fatigue. Taking into account the methodology and results of this study, the evaluated fiber posts can be cemented based on the ratio of crown/root at 1/1. Further clinical studies must be conducted to verify this ratio.

Objective. The aim of this study was to evaluate the castability of CP titanium and Ti-6Al-4V alloy castings into Rematitan Plus investment at three different mold temperatures.Methods. A nylon mesh pattern (20 mm with 64 squares and wire of 0.7 mm in diameter) was used for the castability testing. Initially, an image of the wax pattern was obtained by means of a digital camera and the total extension of filaments (mm) was then measured, using the Leica Qwin image analysis system. The mesh sprued was placed in the Rematitan Plus investment material and the castings were made in a Discovery Plasma machine at three different mold temperatures: 430 degrees C (control group), 480 degrees C or 530'C. Ten castings were made for each temperature. The images of the castings were analyzed (Leica Qwin) and the castability index determined by the number of the completely cast segments as a percentage of the wax pattern. Data were analyzed by two-way ANOVA and Tukey's multiple comparison test (a = 0.05) using materials and temperatures as discriminating variables.Results. The Ti-6Al-4V alloy (60.86%) presented a better castability index than CP Ti (48.44%) (p < 0.000001). For CP Ti, the temperature of 530 degrees C (23.96%) presented better castability than at other temperatures, 480 degrees C (14.66%) and 430 degrees C (12.54%), with no difference between them (p < 0.001). For Ti-6Al-4V alloy, there was a statistically significant difference among the three temperatures: 530 degrees C (28.36%) > 480 degrees C (19.66%) > 430 degrees C (15.97%) (p < 0.002).Significance. Within the limitations of this study, the increase in the mold temperature of the Rematitan Plus investment resulted in a better castability index for both materials, and Ti-6Al-4V presented a better castability index than CP Ti. This paper presents a non-model based technique to detect and locate structural damage with the use of artificial neural networks. This method utilizes high frequency structural excitation (typically greater than 30 kHz) through a surface-bonded piezoelectric sensor/actuator to detect changes in structural point impedance due to the presence of damage. Two sets of artificial neural networks were developed in order to detect, locate and characterize structural damage by examining changes in the measured impedance curves. A simulation beam model was developed to verify the proposed method. An experiment was successfully performed in detecting damage on a 4-bay structure with bolted-joints, where the bolts were progressively released.

Silica gel with a specific surface area of 365 m(2).g(-1) and an average pore diameter of 60 Angstrom was chemically modified with 2-mercaptoimidazole. The degree of functionalization of the covalently attached molecule, (drop SiO)(3)(CH2)(3) - MI, where MI is the 2-mercaptoimidazole bound to the silica surface by a propyl group, was 0.58 mmolg.(-1). In individual metal adsorption experiments from aqueous solutions by the batch procedure, the affinity order was Hg(II)much greater than Cd-II > Cu-II approximate to Zn-II approximate to Pb-II > Mn-II at solution pHs between 4 and 7. Due to the high affinity by the sulfur atom, Hg-II is strongly bound to the functional groups. When solution containing a mixture of Hg-II, Cd-II, Cu-II, Zn-II, Pb-II, and Mn-II ions was passed through a column packed with the adsorbent, Hg-II was the only one whose adsorption and elution was not affected by the presence of other ions.

The structure of silica-polypropyleneglycol (PPG) nanocomposites with weak physical bonds between the organic (PPG) and inorganic (silica) phase, prepared by the sol-gel process, was investigated by small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). These nanocomposite materials are transparent, flexible, have good chemical stability and exhibit high ionic conductivity when doped with lithium salt. Their structure was studied as a function of silica weight fraction x (0.06 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 0.29) and [O]/[Li] ratio (oxygens being of ether-type). The shape of the experimental SAXS curves agrees with that expected for scattering intensity produced by fractal aggregates sized between 30 and 90 Angstrom. This result suggests that the structure of the studied hybrids consists of silica fractal aggregates embedded in a matrix of PPG. The correlation length of the fractal aggregates decreases and the fractal dimension increases for increasing silica content. The variations in structural parameters for increasing Li+ doping indicate that lithium ions favor the growth of fractal silica aggregates without modifying their internal structure and promote the densification of the oligomeric PPG matrix.

[(NH3)(5)Ru-III(2-NCpy)], obtained from electrochemical oxidation of the Ru(II) complex, undergoes hydrolysis to the amido-bonded [Ru-III(NHC(O)-2-py)]. The electrochemical reduction of this latter complex to Ru(II) is followed by an aquation reaction to form [R(II)(NH3)(5)(OH2)] and free picolinamide and a chelation reaction to form cis-[R(II)-(NH3)(4)(2-pica)] with the displacement of one cis ammonia.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the shear bond strength of brackets bonded with different restorative systems and compare it with that afforded by an established orthodontic bonding system. Seventy human bicuspids were used, divided into five different groups with 14 teeth each. Whereas a specific orthodontic bonding resin (Transbond (TM) XT) was used in the control group, the restorative systems Charisma, Tetric Ceram, TPH Spectrum and Z100 were used in the other four groups. Seven days after bonding the brackets to the samples, shear forces were applied under pressure in a universal testing machine. The data collected was evaluated using the ANOVA test and, when a difference was identified, the Tukey test was applied. A 5% level of significance was adopted. The mean results of the shear bond strength tests were as follows: Group 1 (Charisma), 14.98 MPa; Group 2 (Tetric Ceram), 15.16 MPa; Group 3 (TPH), 17.70 MPa; Group 4 (Z100), 13.91 MPa; and Group 5 or control group (Transbond (TM) XT), 17.15 MPa. No statistically significant difference was found among the groups. It was concluded that all tested resins have sufficient bond strength to be recommended for bonding orthodontic brackets.
