Hydrocarbon migration pathways and organic mineral matter associations were used to identify brine pathways in Paleoproterozic to early Mesoproterozoic rocks from the Lawn Hill platform, Mount Isa. Several types of organic matter are identified, and their thermal imprints are used to reconstruct the thermal history of the northern to central parts of the Isa superbasin. Three major thermal hydrothermal episodes are recognized from the organic maturation studies. Isotherm plots on a 175-km-long structural-sedimentological north-south section of the Isa superbasin highlight specific fault systems that acted as hot fluid conduits during the geologic history of the basin. Some of these systems indicate continuing activity into the south Nicholson basin, supported by the presence of low reflectance (type B) bitumen. This bitumen has not been overprinted by later hydrothermal episodes and therefore represents the latest thermal event. Along the north-south profile a general southward increase in temperature is evident. The lowest temperatures are recorded in proximity to the basin margin on the southern flank of the Murphy inlier. Thermal processes and their sequence of events in the basin are recorded by organic maturation, subsequent hydrocarbon generation, its migration and destruction coincident with transport and precipitation of minerals. As some timing and trapping mechanisms for minerals may have analogues with hydrocarbon entrapment, relative timing of processes leading to organic maturation, hydrocarbon generation and migration are utilized in this study to enhance understanding of ore-grade mineralization. In the Proterozoic successions of the Mount Isa basin multiple hydrocarbon generation events are recognized. These events record the transient passage of potential metal-bearing fluids rather than background conductive heat flow from the basement. Such hydrothermal fluids are responsible for inverse maturation profiles in the vicinity of the Termite Range fault and extreme maturation (reflectance values) up to 6 percent Ro at the Grevillea prospect. At Century, intermediate Ro values of

The current success of soy foods is driving soy ingredient manufacturers to develop innovative products for food manufacturers. One such innovation is separating the soy proteins glycinin and beta-conglycinin to take advantage of their individual functional and nutritional properties. Precipitation by acidification is a low-cost method for separating these two proteins. Separation is achieved by preferentially precipitating glycinin at pH ~ 6 while beta-conglycinin remains in solution. Understanding the particle formation during protein precipitation is important as it can influence the efficiency of the precipitation process as well as subsequent downstream processes such as the particle-liquid separation step, usually achieved by centrifugation. Most of the previous soy protein precipitation studies are limited to precipitation at pH 4 as this is the pH range most commonly used in the commercial manufacturing of soy protein isolates. To date, there have been no studies on the particle formation during precipitation at pH > 5.Precipitation of soy protein is generally thought to occur by the rapid formation of primary particles in the size range of 0.1 - 0.3 microns followed by aggregation of these particles via collision to aggregates of size about 1 - 50 microns. The formation of the primary particles occurs on a time scale much shorter than that of the overall precipitation process (Nelson and Glatz, 1985). This study shows that precipitation of soy protein is indeed rapid. At high pH levels, binary liquid-liquid separation occurs forming a protein-rich heavy phase. The protein-rich phase appears as droplets which can be coalesced to form a uniform bulk layer under centrifugation forces. Upon lowering the pH level by the addition of acid, further protein is precipitated as amorphous material which binds the droplets together to form aggregates of amorphous precipitates. Liquid-liquid separation has been observed in many protein solutions but this phenomenon has only scarcely been reported in the literature for soy proteins. It presents an exciting opportunity for an innovative product. Features of the liquid-phase protein such as protein yield and purity will be characterized.

We describe the production of BECs on a new type of atom chip based on silver foil. Our atom chip is fabricated with thick wires capable of carrying currents of several amperes without overheating. The silver surface is highly reflective to light resonant with optical transitions used for Rb. The pattern on the chip consists of two parallel Z-trap wires, capable of producing two-wire guide, and two additional endcap wires for varying the axial confinement. Condensates are produced in magnetic microtraps formed within 1 mm of surface of the chip. We have observed the fragmentation of cold atom clouds when brought close to the chip surface. This results from a perturbed trapping potential caused by nanometer deviations of the current path through the wires on the chip. We present results of fragmentation of cold clouds at distances below 100 µm from the wires and investigate the origin of the deviating current. The fragmentation has different characteristics to those seen with copper conductors. The dynamics of atoms in these microtraps is also investigated. ©2005 COPYRIGHT SPIE--The International Society for Optical Engineering. Real-time control programs are often used in contexts where (conceptually) they run forever. Repetitions within such programs (or their specifications) may either (i) be guaranteed to terminate, (ii) be guaranteed to never terminate (loop forever), or (iii) may possibly terminate. In dealing with real-time programs and their specifications, we need to be able to represent these possibilities, and define suitable refinement orderings. A refinement ordering based on Dijkstra's weakest precondition only copes with the first alternative. Weakest liberal preconditions allow one to constrain behaviour provided the program terminates, which copes with the third alternative to some extent. However, neither of these handles the case when a program does not terminate. To handle this case a refinement ordering based on relational semantics can be used. In this paper we explore these issues and the definition of loops for real-time programs as well as corresponding refinement laws.
