The goal of this study is to identify cues for the cognitive process of attention in ancient Greek art, aiming to find confirmation of its possible use by ancient Greek audiences and artists. Evidence of cues that trigger attention’s psychological dispositions was searched through content analysis of image reproductions of ancient Greek sculpture and fine vase painting from the archaic to the Hellenistic period - ca. 7th -1st cent. BC. Through this analysis, it was possible to observe the presence of cues that trigger orientation to the work of art (i.e. amplification, contrast, emotional salience, simplification, symmetry), of a cue that triggers a disseminate attention to the parts of the work (i.e. distribution of elements) and of cues that activate selective attention to specific elements in the work of art (i.e. contrast of elements, salient color, central positioning of elements, composition regarding the flow of elements and significant objects). Results support the universality of those dispositions, probably connected with basic competencies that are hard-wired in the nervous system and in the cognitive processes.

PURPOSE: To investigate the effects of arginine vasopressin (AVP) on Ca(2+) sparks and oscillations and on sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) Ca(2+) content in retinal arteriolar myocytes. METHODS: Fluo-4-loaded smooth muscle in intact segments of freshly isolated porcine retinal arteriole was imaged by confocal laser microscopy. SR Ca(2+) store content was assessed by recording caffeine-induced Ca(2+) transients with microfluorimetry and fura-2. RESULTS: The frequencies of Ca(2+) sparks and oscillations were increased both during exposure to, and 10 minutes after washout of AVP (10 nM). Caffeine transients were increased in amplitude 10 and 90 minutes after a 3-minute application of AVP. Both AVP-induced Ca(2+) transients and the enhancement of caffeine responses after AVP washout were inhibited by SR 49059, a V(1a) receptor blocker. Forskolin, an activator of adenylyl cyclase, also persistently enhanced caffeine transients. Rp-8-HA-cAMPS, a membrane-permeant PKA inhibitor, prevented enhancement of caffeine transients by both AVP and forskolin. Forskolin, but not AVP, produced a reversible, Rp-8-HA-cAMPS insensitive reduction in basal [Ca(2+)](i). CONCLUSIONS: AVP activates a cAMP/PKA-dependent pathway via V(1a) receptors in retinal arteriolar smooth muscle. This effect persistently increases SR Ca(2+) loading, upregulating Ca(2+) sparks and oscillations, and may favor prolonged agonist activity despite receptor desensitization.

Abstract
BACKGROUND: We present two clinical cases from a single institution where a final diagnosis of cardiac failure was made following the initial finding of ascites and an elevated CA 125 level. In both cases gynaecological malignancy was initially suspected.

Studies on the reception of the classical tradition are an indispensable part of classical studies. Understanding the importance of ancient civilization means also studying how it was used subsequently. This kind of approach is still relatively rare in the field of Byzantine Studies. This volume, which is the result of the range of interests in (mostly) non-English-speaking research communities, takes an important step to filling this gap by investigating the place and dimensions of ‘Byzantium after Byzantium’.
This collection of essays uses the idea of ‘reception-theory’ and expands it to show how European societies after Byzantium have responded to both the reality, and the idea of Byzantine Civilisation. The authors discuss various forms of Byzantine influence in the post-Byzantine world from architecture to literature to music to the place of Byzantium in modern political debates (e.g. in Russia). The intentional focus of the present volume is on those aspects of Byzantine reception less well-known to English-reading audiences, which accounts for the inclusion of Bulgarian, Czech, Polish and Russian perspectives. As a result this book shows that although so-called 'Byzantinism' is a pan-European phenomenon, it is made manifest in local/national versions.
The volume brings together specialists from various countries, mainly Byzantinists, whose works focus not only on Byzantine Studies (that is history, literature and culture of the Byzantine Empire), but also on the influence of Byzantine culture on the world after the Fall of Constantinople.

Vertically aligned ZnO nanowires (NWs) with a length of 1.5-10 mu m and a mean diameter of ca. 150 nm were grown by chemical vapour deposition onto a c-oriented ZnO seed layer which was deposited by atomic layer deposition on Si substrates. The substrates were then spin-coated with an ethanol solution containing Pd nanoparticles with an average size of 2.7 and 4.5 nm. A homogeneous distribution of the Pd nanoparticles on ZnO NWs has been obtained using both Pd particle series. The catalytic activity of the ZnO NWs and Pd/ZnO NWs catalysts was measured in the semihydrogenation of 2-methyl-3-butyn-2-ol at 303-343 K and a pressure of 2-10 bar. The effect of the solvent used on the catalytic performance of the Pd/ZnO NWs catalyst was studied. The Pd/ZnO catalysts showed alkene selectivity of up to 95% at an alkyne conversion of 99%. A kinetic model is proposed to explain the activity and selectivity of the ZnO support and Pd/ZnO catalysts.

The article highlights new insights into production of thin titania films widely used as catalyst support in many modern reactors including capillary microreactors, microstructured fixed-bed reactors and falling film microreactors. Dip-coating of a Mania sol onto a Si substrate has been studied in the range of the sol viscosities of 1.5-2.5 mPa s and the sol withdrawal rates of 0.2-18 mm/s. Different viscosities of sols were created by addition of desired amounts of nitric acid to the synthesis mixture of titanium isopropoxide and Plutonic F127 in ethanol which allowed to control the rate of the condensation reactions. Uniform inesoporous titania coatings were obtained at the solvent withdrawal rates below 10 mm/s at sol viscosities in the range from 1.6 mPa s to 2.5 mPa s. There exists a limiting withdrawal rate corresponding to a capillary number of ca. 0.01 beyond which uniform titania films cannot be obtained. Below the limiting withdrawal rate, the coating thickness is a power function of the sol viscosity and withdrawal rate, both with an exponent of 2/3. The limiting withdrawal rate increases as the solvent evaporation rate increases and it decreases as the sol viscosity increases. Crown Copyright (C) 2011 Published by Elsevier B.V. We report calculations of energy levels, radiative rates and electron impact excitation cross
sections and rates for transitions in He-like Cl XVI, K XVIII, Ca XIX and Sc XX. The grasp
(general-purpose relativistic atomic structure package) is adopted for calculating energy levels
and radiative rates. To determine the collision strengths and subsequently the excitation rates,
the Dirac atomic R-matrix code (darc) is used. Oscillator strengths, radiative rates and line
strengths are reported for all E1, E2, M1 and M2 transitions among the lowest 49 levels of
each ion. Collision strengths are averaged over a Maxwellian velocity distribution and the
effective collision strengths obtained listed over a wide temperature range up to 107.4 K.
Comparisons are made with similar data obtained from the flexible atomic code (fac) to
highlight the importance of resonances, included in calculations with darc, in the
determination of effective collision strengths. Discrepancies between the collision strengths
from darc and fac, particularly for forbidden transitions, are also discussed. Additionally,
theoretical lifetimes are listed for all the 49 levels of the above four ions.

Highly crystalline zeolite Beta coatings in a range of Si/Al ratios of 12-23 were synthesized on a surface-modified molybdenum substrate by hydrothermal synthesis. The average thickness of the coatings was ca. 2 mu m corresponding to a coverage of 2.5 gm(-2). The coatings were obtained from a viscous Na, K, and TEAOH containing aluminosilicate precursor mixture with silica sol as reactive silicon source. A mechanism for the in situ growth of zeolite Beta coatings is proposed. According to this mechanism, the deposition of an amorphous gel layer on the substrate surface in the initial stage of the synthesis is an important step for the crystallization of continuous zeolite Beta coatings. The heating rate of the precursor mixture and the synthesis temperature were optimized to control the level of supersaturation and to stimulate the initial formation of a gel layer. At a Si/Al ratio of 23, fast heating and a temperature of 150 degrees C are required to obtain high coverage, while at a Si/Al ratio of 15, hydrothermal synthesis has to be performed with a slow initial heating rate at 140 degrees C. The preparation and characterisation of a novel, UV-activated solvent-based, colourimetric indicator for O-2 is described, comprising a redox dye (methylene blue, MB), semiconductor photocatalyst (TiO2), and a sacrificial electron donor (SED), all dispersed/dissolved in a polymer medium (sulfonated polystyrene, SPS). Upon exposure, the indicator is readily photobleached as the MB is converted into its oxygen-sensitive, leuco form, LMB. Unlike its water-based counterpart, the recovery of the original colour is very slow (ca. 5 days cf. 6 min), probably due to the largely hydrophobic nature of the polymer encapsulation medium. The kinetics of film photobleaching appear to fit very well, in terms of: irradiance, [TiO2] and [MB], to the usual Langmuir-Hinshelwood type equation associated with a photocatalytic process. The glycerol appears not only to function as a SED, but also a plasticizer and medium for dye dissolution. The kinetics of colour recovery of the photobleached film appear directly dependent upon the ambient level of O-2 but shows a more complex dependence upon the relative humidity, RH. The photobleached film does not recover any of its colour over a 24 h period if the RH
