Catalytic role of pre-adsorbed CO in platinum-based catalysts : the reduction of SO 2 by CO on Pt l Au m (CO) n

Using density functional theory, we have investigated the catalytic properties of bimetallic complex catalysts PtlAum(CO)n (l + m = 2, n = 1–3) in the reduction of SO2 by CO. Due to the strong coupling between the C-2p and metal 5d orbitals, pre-adsorption of CO molecules on the PtlAum is found to be very effective in not only reducing the activation energy, but also preventing poisoning by sulfur. As result of the coupling, the metal 5d band is broadened and down-shifted, and charge is transferred from the CO molecules to the PtlAum. As SO2 is adsorbed on the catalyst, partial charge moves to the anti-σ bonding orbitals between S and O in SO2, weakening the S–O bond strength. This effect is enhanced by pre-adsorbing up to three CO molecules, therefore the S–O bonds become vulnerable. Our results revealed the mechanism of the excellent catalytic properties of the bimetallic complex catalysts.

Governing virtual worlds : to what extent is it possible to empower players and preserve their rights in virtual worlds, and what is the best method of doing so?

In this paper the author considers the possibilities for establishing democratic governance in virtual worlds. He looks at the freedoms currently available to players in “Second Life”, contrasting these to those established in Raph Koster’s “A Declaration of the Rights of Avatars”, and assess whether some restrictions are more necessary in game spaces than social spaces. The author looks at the early implementations of self-governance in online spaces, and consider what lessons can be taken from these, investigating what a contemporary democratic space looks like, in the form of “A Tale in the Desert”, and finally considers how else we may think of giving players more rights in these developing social spaces.

“To educate you to be smart”: disaffected students and the purpose of school in the (not so clever) “lucky country”

This paper contributes to conversations about school, post-compulsory and further education policy by reporting findings from a three-year study with disaffected students who have been referred to special “behaviour” schools. Contrary to popular opinion, our research finds that these “ignorant yobs” (Tomlinson, 2012) do value education and know what it is for. They also have aspirations for a secure, productive and fulfilled life, although it may not involve university level study. Importantly, we found that students who responded negatively with regard to the importance of schooling tended to envision future lives and occupations for which they believed school knowledge was unnecessary. The implications of this research for school, post-compulsory and further education policy are discussed.

To address the sub-theme of the journal: Artistic Practices in a Time of Crisis, the author discusses the context of economic cuts and recent international crises on his PhD interactive and visual design research project undertaken in Australia. Identifying an apparent root-cause of current global crises, the author in reply, has structured a research plan and created a suite of new media, interactive, technology artworks, and installation art. Notions of Zen Buddhism, and stillness through meditation, are applied in the research and context of the artworks to support awareness of wellbeing, in response to the root-cause condition. The discussion will focus on the overarching question: how can one obtain value through the arts during current times of economic reduction conditioning?

Twelve not so angry men: Masculinities and the perceptions of the 'off-field' violence involved in Australian body contact sports

Recently, media 'scandals' have pervaded a number of Australian body contact sports, in particular rugby league, rugby union and Australian rules football. Utilising the theoretical framework of masculinities, this research interviews footballers to gauge their perceptions of this media attention and how it compares to their own perspectives regarding off-field violence. Drawing inspiration from James Messerschmidt's (2000) 'Nine Lives' study and R.W. Connell's (1995) theoretical masculinities framework, in-depth, semi-structured interviews—known as life histories—were conducted with 12 footballers. Twelve life histories were completed with four men from each of the three major Australian football codes, namely Australian rules football, rugby union and rugby league. The research explores linkages between masculinity, body contact sport and engagement (or lack thereof) in violence 'off field'.

The effect of foliar sprays of the synthetic auxin 3-5-6 TPA, on fruit drop, fruit size and seed development in three lychee (Litchi chinensis) cultivars: Tai So, Fay Zee Sui and Kwai Mai Pink.

Fruit drop in lychee can cause major yield losses in Australia, the severity varying with cultivar and season. Research in China, South Africa and Israel has demonstrated the potential for synthetic auxins used as foliar sprays to reduce fruit drop in lychee. Trials were initiated in Australia to test the efficacy of the synthetic auxin, 3-5-6 Trichloro-2-phridyl-oxyacetic acid (3-5-6 TPA) at 50 ppm on the cultivars Tai So, Fay Zee Sui and Kwai Mai Pink. Results indicate that in most cases the TPA reduced natural fruit drop however the size of the fruit at the time of application affects the response and the ideal application time varies with cultivar; approximately 13 mm fruit length in 'Kwai Mai Pink', 20 mm in 'Fay Zee Sui' and 27 mm in 'Tai So'. If applied too early in 'Tai So', it caused an increase in fruit drop. The TPA was most effective when natural fruit drop was high, reducing fruit drop from 74.7 to 34.9% in 'Kwai Mai Pink' and least effective when natural fruit drop was low. An increase in the percentage of fruit with poorly developed (chicken tongue) seed and slightly larger fruit size was also observed in treated trees.

Contemplating Knudsen's Baseline: Where small is not so beautiful

Does the Internet's World Wide Web (the web) represent an opportunity or threat to the small firms of the world? In line with recent calls for entrepreneurship research to adopt a more evolutionary approach, this article considers the context, process, and possible outcomes of small place-based firms operating in a web-impacted environment. Despite initial optimism that the web would provide a level-playing field for firms of all sizes, little evidence exist to support such a notion. When the learning abilities deemed necessary to exploit the web are considered, it would seem that only the most entrepreneurial of small firms would likely adapt to web-impacted environments. It is concluded that the present rate of web-based change represents a unique and valuable research opportunity for entrepreneurship researchers.

Trials tested the efficacy of the synthetic auxin 3-5-6 trichloro-2-phridyl-oxyacetic acid (TPA) applied as a foliar spray at 50 ppm on fruit drop and fruit size on the cultivars ‘Fay Zee Siu’, ‘Kaimana’, ‘Kwai Mai Pink’, ‘Souey Tung’ and ‘Tai So’. TPA reduced fruit drop when applied to fruit greater than 12 mm in length but increased fruit drop when fruit were smaller. Fruit size at the time of application had less effect on the response than the level of natural fruit drop. When natural fruit drop was high, TPA significantly reduced it; by up to 18.7 in ‘Fay Zee Siu’, 37.1 in ‘Kaimana’, 39.8 in ‘Kwai Mai Pink’, 15.1 in ‘Souey Tung’ and 7.7 in ‘Tai So’. TPA was less effective when natural fruit drop was low. TPA increased the number of large fruit and frequently increased the number of small fruit at harvest. The small fruit were associated with an increase in the retention of fruit with poorly developed (chicken tongue) seed. Average fruit size was generally larger (up to 12.7 in ‘Souey Tung’ and 22 in ‘Tai So’) with TPA applications.
