Suppose a seller wants to sell k similar or identical objects and there are n > k potential buyers. Suppose that each buyer wants only one object. In this case, we suggest the use of a simultaneous auction that would work as follows. Players are asked to submit sealed bids for one object. The individual with the highest bid chooses an object first; the individual with the second-highest bid chooses the next object; and this process continues until the individual with the kth highest bid receives the last object. Each individual pays the equivalent to his or her bid. When objects are identical, we show that the proposed auction generates the same revenue as a first-price sealed-bid sequential auction. When objects are perfectly correlated, there is no known solution for sequential auctions, whereas we can characterize bidding strategies in the proposed auction. Moreover, the proposed auction is optimal (given an appropriately chosen reserve price), and it may be easier and cheaper to run than a sequential auction.

This article`s main purpose consists in showing how family and ownership cultures may influence the process of making a ""well-performing"" organization, based on an empirical study in family business in Brazil. The study aimed to find critical moments of company`s history and the focus was to compare critical moments with the three-dimension model of family business development proposed by Davis et al. (1996). Through facts sequence, research was organized so as to find how the process influenced company`s professionalization. The article concludes that family and its value and culture may impact on the evolution, and the first step to organize a company is to organize the family that leads the company.

The research analyzed critical aspects of the knowledge management process based on the analyses of knowledge, abilities and attitudes required to individual knowledge workers and to organizations responsible for the management process. In the present work a characterization of the knowledge management process was developed and information and knowledge wokers defined. Competence concept was discussed and specialists gave opinions about critical competences to knowledge management process. The opinions were organized and analyzed by the Delphi method. The results aggregate to the management context by discussing an extremely important resource to organizations - knowledge - and because they support its management process. The research identified wide critical aspects that are compatible with current organizational challenges, directing the process management to important themes as: the worker able to create, the organization able to convert individual knowledge into organizational knowledge, knowledge sharing while still tacit, the maximization organizational knowledge use, information and knowledge generation and preservation, among others important topics to be observed by knowledge workers and by administrators responsible for the knowledge management process.

The purpose of this study is to analyze the Controllership relevance as support risk management in non-financial companies. Risk management is a widely discussed and disseminated subject amongst financial institutions. It is obvious that economic uncertainties and, consequently, prevention and. control must also exist in non-financial companies. To enable managers to take safe-decisions, it is essential for them to be able to count on instrumental support that provides timely and adequate information, to ensure lower levels of mistakes and risk exposure. However, discussion concerning risk management in non-financial companies is still in its early stages in Brazil. Considering this gap, this study aims at assessing how Controllership has been acting in? companies under the insight of risk and how it can contribute to risk management in non-financial companies. To achieve the proposed goal, a field research was. carried-out with non-financial companies that are located in the city Sao Paulo and listed in the Sao Paulo Stock Exchange (Bovespa). The research was carried out using questionnaires, which were sent do Risk Officers and Controllers of those companies with the purpose of evaluating their perception on the subject. The results,of the research allow us to conclude that Controllership offers support to risk management, through information that contributes to the mitigation of the risks in non-financial companies.

The orthodoxy of supply chain management (SCM) emphasises competitive advantage through increased operational efficiency and market responsiveness from production and distribution processes into the hands of consumers. It anticipates that future competition will be between chains rather than between firms. While well established in other industry sectors, the SCM concept is newly developed in the Australian agri-food sector. Critical review of the concept has identified key issues of power among channel members, processes of chain initiation and innovation, and the inability of SCM to offer a viable business strategy for some firms. Building on those insights, this paper examines the supply chain concept for horticulture. Horticultural products are characterised by perishability, heterogeneity and lags in production response to market signals. Producers’ profits are vulnerable to quantity, timing of supply and product specification. Many supply chains in smaller industries are loose, fragmented, interwoven, unstable and unique! Firms operating within these environments need an astute understanding of the chains, the hierarchy of channel members and their relative position. Effective business strategies – for individual firms and supply chains - need to be developed and redeveloped to accommodate the dynamic nature of horticulture. Two case studies are discussed as contributions to this early stage of the theoretical development of supply chain management. The SCM concept also has implications for horticultural researchers, involving a wider range of industry stakeholders, technical problems and research skills. As for business management, the usefulness of the concept will depend on its capacity to increase responsiveness to customers’ preferences and customer value.

Este trabalho analisa a importância da propaganda no setor da construção imobiliária nos municÃpios de Vitória e Serra no EspÃrito Santo, localizados na Região Metropolitana da Grande Vitória (RMGV). Esse setor tem produzido uma série de transformações no espaço urbano da RMGV, onde a propaganda situa-se como parte destas estratégias, constituindo-se numa importante ferramenta. A partir de informações oriundas de entrevistas e de pesquisa bibliográfica e documental, investigamos por que a propaganda vai modificando-se com as formas diferenciadas de produção imobiliária e ganhando importância nos lançamentos de empreendimentos entre as décadas de 1950 a 2010, nos municÃpios de Vitória e Serra. Ao longo da pesquisa foi possÃvel constatar que os mecanismos institucionais criados pelo Estado trouxeram modificações ao referido setor, o que acarretou na elaboração de estratégias de produção e criação de novos produtos. Tais modificações manifestaram-se na propaganda imobiliária, que atualmente ocupa um lugar de destaque na gestão de marketing implantada nas construtoras e incorporadoras capixabas. Os resultados mostram que ao longo das décadas o setor da construção imobiliária vem elaborando estratégias para criação de novas formas de distinção de seus produtos com intuito de apropriação do espaço urbano nos municÃpios estudados.

Os fundos de investimento imobiliário combinam caracterÃsticas tanto do mercado imobiliário, fonte de seus rendimentos, quanto do mercado de capitais, ambiente em que são negociados. O impacto de cada um desses mercados subjacentes no comportamento, desempenho e risco dessa classe de ativos não é, no entanto, ainda claramente definida, sendo um dos grandes temas em análise, tanto na literatura acadêmica, quanto na indústria de fundos internacionais. Em face da significativa expansão dessa alternativa de investimento no mercado brasileiro, no presente estudo foram analisadas as variáveis que influenciam os retornos dos fundos imobiliários brasileiros para uma amostra de fundos listados em Bolsa de Valores de São Paulo, perÃodo de 2008-2013. Seguindo a metodologia de Clayton e Mackinnon (2003), os fatores explicativos dos retornos foram decompostos em quatro componentes principais, sendo três fatores de retorno de mercado (mercado de ações, mercado de renda fixa e mercado imobiliário) e risco idiossincrático. De acordo com a estatÃstica descritiva, os fundos imobiliários da amostra apresentaram maior retorno em relação aos demais mercados, exceto em comparação com o mercado imobiliário, porém com menor risco. As análises de correlação, regressão e decomposição da variância indicam que o mercado de ações e o mercado imobiliário direto são, em geral, significativos no modelo, porém explicam apenas cerca de 15% da volatilidade dos retornos dos fundos da amostra. À luz da Moderna Teoria do Portfólio, esses resultados indicam que a inclusão de fundos imobiliários pode ter potencial diversificador numa carteira multi-ativo, seja aumentando o retorno total de uma carteira formada de ações e tÃtulos de renda fixa, sem acréscimo em risco; ou mantendo o retorno dessa carteira, com diminuição da volatilidade, ampliando assim a fronteira eficiente da carteira. Esse efeito questiona o tradicional equilibrium fund de carteiras de investimentos formadas apenas de ações e renda fixa e aponta os fundos imobiliários como uma alternativa de investimento diversificadora, enquanto classe de ativo única. A análise de subamostras por tipologia indica, porém, que o papel diversificador dos fundos imobiliários está atrelado ao tipo de empreendimento que lastreia esse fundo, uma vez que os fatores explicativos e seus impactos nos retornos diferem de uma tipologia para outra. Esse resultado tem importantes implicações no critério de seleção a ser adotado tanto por investidores para seleção de ativos para uma carteira otimizada, como para gestores de fundos imobiliários na formatação e gestão desses produtos. Conclui-se também que os retornos dos fundos, de certo modo, refletem seu caráter hÃbrido, mas o modelo decomposto em 4 componentes não é suficiente para explicar os retornos dos fundos imobiliários, uma vez que o modelo estendido, demonstrou que outras variáveis, inclusive parâmetros desses próprios mercados, além de variáveis macroeconômicas e as caracterÃsticas de cada fundo (eg. market-to-book, tamanho), podem ser responsáveis por explicar considerável parte da variância dos retornos dos FIIs.

O presente trabalho refere-se a um projecto real de investimento imobiliário, relativo à construção e comercialização de duas moradias geminadas destinadas a habitação. Este estudo permite ao promotor avaliar o seu interesse económico, caracterizar oportunidades e identificar factores de risco, permitindo uma tomada de decisão baseada em estudos económicos objectivos e fundamentados, e não apenas pela sua intuição. Após a pesquisa sobre o estado de conhecimento deste tema, iniciou-se o estudo do projecto, caracterizando-o numa fase inicial, com a realização de um estudo prévio da sua viabilidade económica, recorrendo a métodos simplificados para a obtenção dos parâmetros de análise necessários, como sejam, os custo do terreno e da construção, a duração da obra, o PVT do imóvel, e a distribuição temporal dos custos e receitas. É então realizada a análise com base em descontos de fluxos de caixa, para determinar a rendibilidade do projecto, através dos parâmetros de decisão VAL e TIR. Concluindo-se que o projecto é economicamente viável, inicia-se a obra e apuram-se os valores reais dos diversos parâmetros de análise, ficando no final com as variáveis estimadas do PVT e do tempo necessário à comercialização do imóvel. É também abordada a importância da gestão coordenação e fiscalização da obra. Com os valores reais obtidos são traçados diversos cenários, analisado o recurso a capital alheio, à s variações no PVT e no tempo necessário para a comercialização do imóvel e a possibilidade de arrendamento com posterior venda. A análise do projecto segundo esses cenários, permite obter medidas de rendibilidade e compará-los. É então feita a comparação entre as rendibilidades dos vários cenários e retiradas as conclusões sobre os resultados obtidos. Para melhor compreensão dos resultados, é feita uma abordagem à crise imobiliária sentida em Portugal e à possibilidade do uso da permuta imobiliária para facilitar a realização dos negócios imobiliários. No final, serão realizadas recomendações e propostas de melhoria para estudos que possam ser relevantes para o tema e dar uma possÃvel continuidade a este trabalho.

An ever increasing need for extra functionality in a single embedded system demands for extra Input/Output (I/O) devices, which are usually connected externally and are expensive in terms of energy consumption. To reduce their energy consumption, these devices are equipped with power saving mechanisms. While I/O device scheduling for real-time (RT) systems with such power saving features has been studied in the past, the use of energy resources by these scheduling algorithms may be improved. Technology enhancements in the semiconductor industry have allowed the hardware vendors to reduce the device transition and energy overheads. The decrease in overhead of sleep transitions has opened new opportunities to further reduce the device energy consumption. In this research effort, we propose an intra-task device scheduling algorithm for real-time systems that wakes up a device on demand and reduces its active time while ensuring system schedulability. This intra-task device scheduling algorithm is extended for devices with multiple sleep states to further minimise the overall device energy consumption of the system. The proposed algorithms have less complexity when compared to the conservative inter-task device scheduling algorithms. The system model used relaxes some of the assumptions commonly made in the state-of-the-art that restrict their practical relevance. Apart from the aforementioned advantages, the proposed algorithms are shown to demonstrate the substantial energy savings.

According to a recent Eurobarometer survey (2014), 68% of Europeans tend not to trust national governments. As the increasing alienation of citizens from politics endangers democracy and welfare, governments, practitioners and researchers look for innovative means to engage citizens in policy matters. One of the measures intended to overcome the so-called democratic deficit is the promotion of civic participation. Digital media proliferation offers a set of novel characteristics related to interactivity, ubiquitous connectivity, social networking and inclusiveness that enable new forms of societal-wide collaboration with a potential impact on leveraging participative democracy. Following this trend, e-Participation is an emerging research area that consists in the use of Information and Communication Technologies to mediate and transform the relations among citizens and governments towards increasing citizens’ participation in public decision-making. However, despite the widespread efforts to implement e-Participation through research programs, new technologies and projects, exhaustive studies on the achieved outcomes reveal that it has not yet been successfully incorporated in institutional politics. Given the problems underlying e-Participation implementation, the present research suggested that, rather than project-oriented efforts, the cornerstone for successfully implementing e-Participation in public institutions as a sustainable added-value activity is a systematic organisational planning, embodying the principles of open-governance and open-engagement. It further suggested that BPM, as a management discipline, can act as a catalyst to enable the desired transformations towards value creation throughout the policy-making cycle, including political, organisational and, ultimately, citizen value. Following these findings, the primary objective of this research was to provide an instrumental model to foster e-Participation sustainability across Government and Public Administration towards a participatory, inclusive, collaborative and deliberative democracy. The developed artefact, consisting in an e-Participation Organisational Semantic Model (ePOSM) underpinned by a BPM-steered approach, introduces this vision. This approach to e-Participation was modelled through a semi-formal lightweight ontology stack structured in four sub-ontologies, namely e-Participation Strategy, Organisational Units, Functions and Roles. The ePOSM facilitates e-Participation sustainability by: (1) Promoting a common and cross-functional understanding of the concepts underlying e-Participation implementation and of their articulation that bridges the gap between technical and non-technical users; (2) Providing an organisational model which allows a centralised and consistent roll-out of strategy-driven e-Participation initiatives, supported by operational units dedicated to the execution of transformation projects and participatory processes; (3) Providing a standardised organisational structure, goals, functions and roles related to e-Participation processes that enhances process-level interoperability among government agencies; (4) Providing a representation usable in software development for business processes’ automation, which allows advanced querying using a reasoner or inference engine to retrieve concrete and specific information about the e-Participation processes in place. An evaluation of the achieved outcomes, as well a comparative analysis with existent models, suggested that this innovative approach tackling the organisational planning dimension can constitute a stepping stone to harness e-Participation value.

The paper studies the relationship between four differently rated bank’s financial profile and their standalone credit rating issued by Moody’s. The comparative analysis shows an example that despite their pricing power and geographical coverage, larger banks do not necessarily have better credit ratings. Instead, business model and risk appetite seem to be the defining factors of banks’ vulnerability to shocks, such as the Spanish real estate crisis. The risk-return relationship is also identified in the banks’ fundamentals meaning that while expansionary strategy in riskier asset classes enhances margins, it also potentially distorts the credit risk profile.
