The boreal forest and the polar front

The analysis presented in this paper suggests that the larger heating over the boreal forest in the spring and summer, as contrasted with weaker heating over the adjacent tundra, results in a preferred position of the polar front along the northern edge of the boreal forest. This positioning is well documented in the literature (see, for example, Bryson, 1966; Barry and Hare, 1974; Kreps and Barry, 1970). This heating results from the lower albedo of the boreal forest which is not compensated by an increase in transpiration, even with the larger leaf area index of the forest. The warmer temperatures are mixed upward by the deep boundary layer over the forest and mesoscale circulations which result from the patchiness of heating associated with the heterogeneous landscapes of the forest. Thus in contrast to previous assumptions in which the arctic front position in the summer determines the northern limit of the boreal tree line, our study suggests the boreal forest itself significantly influences the preferred position of the front. This conclusion reinforces the findings of Bonan et al. (1992) and Foley et al. (1994) on the important role of boreal forest-tundra interactions with climate.

New animals, new landscapes and new worldviews: the Iron Age to Roman transition at Fishbourne

Anthropologists and cultural geographers have long accepted that animals play an important role in the creation of human cultures. However, such beliefs are yet to be embraced by archaeologists, who seldom give zooarchaeological data much consideration beyond the occasional economic or environmental reconstruction. In an attempt to highlight animal remains as a source of cultural information, this paper examines the evidence for the changing relationship between people and wild animals in Iron Age and Roman southern England. Special attention is given to ‘exotic’ species — in particular fallow deer, domestic fowl and the hare — whose management increased around AD 43. In Iron Age Britain the concept of wild game reserves was seemingly absent, but the post-Conquest appearance of new landscape features such as vivaria, leporaria and piscinae indicates a change in worldview from a situation where people seemingly negotiated with the ‘wilderness’ and ‘wild things’ to one where people felt they had the right or the responsibility to bring them to order. Using Fishbourne Roman Palace as a case study, we argue that wild and exotic animals represented far more than gastronomic treats or symbols of Roman identity, instead influencing the way in which people engaged with, traversed and experienced their surroundings.

Haren. Ett hot mot idrottens värde?

Inom friidrottens löpgrenar kan man idag se vid de stora galorna att det finns en person som har till uppgift att springa före övriga deltagare och springa i en viss fart som har beställts antingen av arrangörerna eller någon löpare. Denna person kallas för "hare" vars huvuduppgift är att se till att ett visst tempo hålls under loppet. Men vad har detta fenomen för effekt på idrottens värde? Detta arbete ger en beskrivning av fenomenet "haren" både ur historiskt perspektiv samt hur det ser ut i nutida läge. Genom diverse teorier om vad som skapar värde inom idrott och hur idrott bör utföras för att uppfattas som mer "äkta" har fenomenet sedan analyserats för att bestämma om fenomenet är något positivt eller negativt för idrottens värde. Prestationer är något som ska genomföras på egen hand och idrottaren skall besitta de resurser som krävs för att kunna genomföra ett lopp helt på egen hand och kunna hantera både interna och externa påfrestningar. Att inte veta vem som kommer att vinna är den ovisshet som skapar spänning och därmed värde inom idrott. Med haren har man eliminerat denna ovisshet för att i stället få spänning genom att fokusera loppen på att slå rekord. Detta sätt att skapa prestationer har en mycket negativ påverkan på idrottens värde vilket får en detaljerad analys i detta arbete.

Esta diss.ertação apresenta urna anãlise das nonnas dis.ciplin~ res que regul am a conduta das cri anças e adolescentes, e que se consti tuem como tecnicas de adestramento e~ercidas sobre a referida população, por duas instâncias de poder: o Estado e a Escola. As regras. de conduta que fundam o regime escolar sao analis~ das no âmbito das prescrições dis.ciplinares vigentes noColegio Santo In! cio do Rio de Janeiro - dirigido pelos jesultas -, no perlodo de 1937-45 e contidas em alguns documentos dessa instituição, como Regulamento, Es tatutos e Anuãrios. Antes elaboramos. entretanto, uma genealogia da pr~ pria disciplina escolar jesultica. atraves da anãlise de discurso de três documentos bãsicos da Companhia de Jesus, redigidos durante o seco XVI: As COY/J.).:tU.u.iÇÕe6, o Ra..ti.o StucLi.olUlm e os Exe.lLc1cio~ E~p.úútwú.6, onde se destaca uma nltida dimensão pedagógica e normativa. Circunscrevemos a anãlise das regras disciplinares do Colegio Santo Inãcio aos anos de 1937-45, visto tal perlodo marcar a vigência do Estado-Novo no Brasil, quando são instituldos uma serie de dispositivos visando enquadrar e nonnatizar a população infanto-juvenil, e que se en contram consubstanciados em textos como: a Constituição de 37, nos capl tulos onde dispõe Da Famllia, Da Educação e Da Cultura (art. 122-134); a Exposição de Motivos da Lei Orgânica do Ensino Secundãrio, de l/4J42; e artigos publicados na Revista Cu.f;twr.a Po.e1:üca - que funcionou como uma especie de tribuna do governo central -, que tratam de temas como nigi! ne, disciplina, sanidade e moralização das crianças e adolescentes. Multivariate analysis of fresh-cut carambola slices stored under different temperatures

Use of modified atmosphere to extend shelf life of fresh-cut carambola (Averrhoa carambola L. cv. Fwang Tung)

Fresh-cut fruit products, including carambola (Averrhoa carambola L.), have limited marketability due to cut surface browning attributed to phenolic compound oxidation by enzymes, such as polyphenol oxidase (PPO). The objective of this study was to evaluate postharvest changes in carambola slices in three different packages. Carambola fruit (cv. Fwang Tung) were picked from the Estacao Experimental de Citricultura de Bebedouro orchard at the mature-green stage. The fruit were washed, dipped in NaOCl solution (200 mg L-1 for 5 min), stored overnight at 10 degrees C, then manually sliced into pieces of approximately 1 cm. The slices were rinsed with NaOCl solution at 20 mg L-1, drained for 3 min, and packaged in polyethylene terephthalate (PET) trays (Neoform (R) N94); polystyrene trays covered with PVC 0.017 turn (Vitafilm (R), Goodyear); and vacuum seated polyolefin bags (PLO, Cryovac (R) PD900). The packages were stored at 6.8 degrees C and 90% RH for 12 d, with samples taken every 4 d. PET trays and PVC film did not significantly modify the internal atmosphere and the high water permeability of PVC led to more rapid slice desiccation. PPO activity was lower when the slices were packaged in PLO vacuum sealed bags, which reduced degreening and led to better appearance maintenance for up to 12 d. (R) 2006 Elsevier B.V.
