As indicated by several recent studies, magnetic susceptibility of the brain is influenced mainly by myelin in the white matter and by iron deposits in the deep nuclei. Myelination and iron deposition in the brain evolve both spatially and temporally. This evolution reflects an important characteristic of normal brain development and ageing. In this study, we assessed the changes of regional susceptibility in the human brain in vivo by examining the developmental and ageing process from 1 to 83 years of age. The evolution of magnetic susceptibility over this lifespan was found to display differential trajectories between the gray and the white matter. In both cortical and subcortical white matter, an initial decrease followed by a subsequent increase in magnetic susceptibility was observed, which could be fitted by a Poisson curve. In the gray matter, including the cortical gray matter and the iron-rich deep nuclei, magnetic susceptibility displayed a monotonic increase that can be described by an exponential growth. The rate of change varied according to functional and anatomical regions of the brain. For the brain nuclei, the age-related changes of susceptibility were in good agreement with the findings from R2* measurement. Our results suggest that magnetic susceptibility may provide valuable information regarding the spatial and temporal patterns of brain myelination and iron deposition during brain maturation and ageing. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

The generation of a spatially single-mode white-light supercontinuum has been observed in a photonic crystal fiber pumped with 60-ps pulses of subkilowatt peak power. The spectral broadening is identified as being due to the combined action of stimulated Raman scattering and parametric four-wave-mixing generation, with a negligible contribution from the self-phase modulation of the pump pulses. The experimental results are in good agreement with detailed numerical simulations. These findings demonstrate that ultrafast femtosecond pulses are not needed for efficient supercontinuum generation in photonic crystal fibers. © 2001 Optical Society of America.

Digital Forestry has been proposed as “the science, technology, and art of systematically acquiring, integrating, analyzing, and applying digital information to support sustainable forests.” Although rooted in traditional forestry disciplines, Digital Forestry draws from a host of other fields that, in the past few decades, have become important for implementing the concept of forest ecosystem management and the principle of sustainable forestry. Digital Forestry is a framework that links all facets of forestry information at local, national, and global levels through an organized digital network. It is anticipated that a new set of principles will be established when practicing Digital Forestry concept for the evolution of forestry education, research, and practices as the 21st century unfolds.

Freshly-mixed and partially-cured ordinary Portland cement (OPC) pastes have been shown to exhibit good biological compatibility with a range of cells and tissue-types; particularly those associated with bone formation. Formulations based on OPC have been used as dental restoratives and are now being investigated for their potential use in orthopaedic repair. Despite the current clinical interest in OPCs, very little is known about their chemistry in the physiological environment. In this respect, research to investigate aspects of the interactions between a white Portland cement (WPC) paste and simulated body fluid (SBF) has been carried out in vitro. Exposure to SBF has been found to promote the precipitation of a layer of 'bone-like' hydroxyapatite on the surface of WPC paste which underpins its ability to integrate with living tissue. The dissolution of portlandite and formation of calcite were also observed on contact with SBF.

Reproductive stress is apparent inAbra alba as a result of infection with the sporocysts ofBucephaloides gracilescens, culminating in castration in heavily infected specimens. The bivalve is also subject to mechanical stress from actively growing sporocyst tubules and nutritional stress due to the nutrient requirement of large numbers of germ balls within the sporocysts. Using the digestive cell lysosomal system ofAbra as a monitor, it was possible to demonstrate quantitatively a parasite-induced cellular stress response by applying a sensitive cytochemical test for lysosomal stability. Lysosomal stability was determined as the labilisation period for latent Nacetyl-β-hexosaminidase (NAH), measured by microdensitometry. In uninfectedAbra, digestive cell lysosomal NAH expressed structure-linked latency. Hence a significantly longer labilisation period was required compared with infectedAbra, where the parasitic burden with its associated stress effects resulted in a destabilisation of the lysosomal membrane. This reduced the latency of the enzyme, so that a much shorter labilisation period was required for the stressed tissue to express maximum lysosomal enzyme activity. It is suggested that the lysosomal system of the digestive cells inAbra can be used as a sensitive monitor of the stress induced by the sporocysts and developing cercariae ofBucephaloides.
