This article reports on a study which explores how policies and practices shape the experiences of single parents when seeking and using child support from violent ex-partners. The findings of this and similar research studies on violence, child support and poverty indicate that the receipt of child support is a multi-step process plagued with multiple barriers.

In this paper we present a multiple window incremental learning algorithm that distinguishes between virtual concept drift and real concept drift. The algorithm is unsupervised and uses a novel approach to tracking concept drift that involves the use of competing windows to interpret the data. Unlike previous methods which use a single window to determine the drift in the data, our algorithm uses three windows of different sizes to estimate the change in the data. The advantage of this approach is that it allows the system to progressively adapt and predict the change thus enabling it to deal more effectively with different types of drift. We give a detailed description of the algorithm and present the results obtained from its application to two real world problems: background image processing and sound recognition. We also compare its performance with FLORA, an existing concept drift tracking algorithm.

In this paper, we present a distributed surveillance system that uses multiple cheap static cameras to track multiple people in indoor environments. The system has a set of Camera Processing Modules and a Central Module to coordinate the tracking tasks among the cameras. Since each object in the scene can be tracked by a number of cameras, the problem is how to choose the most appropriate camera for each object. We propose a novel algorithm to allocate objects to cameras using the object-to-camera distance while taking into account occlusion. The algorithm attempts to assign objects in the overlapping fields of view to the nearest camera which can see the object without occlusion. Experimental results show that the system can coordinate cameras to track people properly and can deal well with occlusion.

This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a telephone health coaching and support service provided to members of an Australian private health insurance fund-Telephonic Complex Care Program (TCCP)-on hospital use and associated costs. A case-control pre-post study design was employed using propensity score matching. Private health insurance members (n=273) who participated in TCCP between April and December 2012 (cases) were matched (1:1) to members who had not previously been enrolled in the program or any other disease management programs offered by the insurer (n=232). Eligible members were community dwelling, aged ≥65 years, and had 2 or more hospital admissions in the 12 months prior to program enrollment. Preprogram variables that estimated the propensity score included: participant demographics, diagnoses, and hospital use in the 12 months prior to program enrollment. TCCP participants received one-to-one telephone support, personalized care plan, and referral to community-based services. Control participants continued to access usual health care services. Primary outcomes were number of hospital admission claims and total benefits paid for all health care utilizations in the 12 months following program enrollment. Secondary outcomes included change in total benefits paid, hospital benefits paid, ancillary benefits paid, and total hospital bed days over the 12 months post enrollment. Compared with matched controls, TCCP did not appear to reduce health care utilization or benefits paid in the 12 months following program enrollment. However, program characteristics and implementation may have impacted its effectiveness. In addition, challenges related to evaluating complex health interventions such as TCCP are discussed.

The objective of this study was to determine the level of resistance of Haemonchus contortus and Trichostrongylus colubriformis in sheep to levamisole albendazole ivermectin moxidectin closantel and trichlorfon The parasites were isolated from sheep naturally infected by gastrointestinal nematodes and were then kept in monospecifically infected lambs for production of infective larvae (L3) of both species Forty-two lambs at three months of age were simultaneously artificially infected with 4000 L3 of H contortus and 4000 L3 of T colubriformis The animals were allocated Into seven groups with six animals each that received one of the following treatments Group 1-control no treatment Group 2-moxidectin (0 2 mg/kg body weight (BW)) Group 3-closantel (10 mg/kg BW) Group 4-trichlorfon (100 mg/kg BW) Group 5-levamisole phosphate (4 7 mg/kg BW) Group 6-albendazole (5 0 mg/kg BW) and Group 7-ivermectin (0 2 mg/kg BW) Nematode fecal egg counts (FEC) were carried out on the day of treatment and again at 3 7 10 and 14 days post-treatment on the same occasions composite fecal cultures were prepared for each group for production of L3 which were identified into genus The animals were sacrificed for worm counts at 14 days after treatment The efficacy of each treatment was calculated from the arithmetic mean of the FEC or worm burden of the treated group compared with the values of the control group Only trichlorfon and moxidectin treatments resulted in a significant reduction of H contortus recorded at necropsy (73% and 45% respectively) Moxidectin reduced T colubriformis worm burdens by 82% and albendazole by 19% All other anthelmintics resulted in no significant reduction in the numbers of worms found at necropsy In conclusion the Isolates of H contortus and T colubriformis showed multiple resistance to all groups of anthelmintics tested This is the first report based on the controlled efficacy test to show resistance of T colubriformis to macrocyclic lactones in Brazil (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. A Review of Premature Termination in Psychotherapy: Strategies for Engaging Clients and Improving Outcomes by Joshua K. Swift and Roger P. Greenberg Washington, DC: American Psychological Association. 2015. 212 pp, ISBN 978-1-4338-1801- 1. $69.95 http://dx.doi.org/10.1037/a0038612 Premature Termination in Psychotherapy: Strategies for Engaging Clients and Improving Outcomes is one of the very best examples of the new generation of psychotherapy development. Based on rigorous research findings and a deep look into the preexisting literature, this book presents practical guidelines to understand premature termination and provides evidence-based strategies for how to engage patients in treatment. It will especially be a highlight for practitioners who are interested in a broad insight of the overall empirical literature. For graduate students in clinical and counseling psychology, this book might be an excellent prototype for how to bring rigorous quantitative research and convenient practice examples together.

Sigma 54 is a required factor for bacterial RNA polymerase to respond to enhancers and directs a mechanism that is a hybrid between bacterial and eukaryotic transcription. Three pathways were found that bypass the enhancer requirement in vitro. These rely on either deletion of the sigma 54 N terminus or destruction of the DNA consensus −12 promoter recognition element or altering solution conditions to favor transient DNA melting. Each of these allows unstable heparin-sensitive pre-initiation complexes to form that can be driven to transcribe in the absence of both enhancer protein and ATP β–γ hydrolysis. These disparate pathways are proposed to have a common basis in that multiple N-terminal contacts may mediate the interactions between the polymerase and the DNA region where melting originates. The results raise possibilities for common features of open complex formation by different RNA polymerases.

Facile modification of oligodeoxyribonucleotides is required for efficient immobilization to a pre-activated glass surface. This report presents an oligodeoxyribonucleotide which contains a hairpin stem–loop structure with multiple phosphorothioate moieties in the loop. These moieties are used to anchor the oligo to glass slides that are pre-activated with bromoacetamidopropylsilane. The efficiency of the attachment reaction was improved by increasing the number of phosphorothioates in the loop, as shown in the remarkable enhancement of template hybridization and single base extension through catalysis by DNA polymerase. The loop and stem presumably serve as lateral spacers between neighboring oligodeoxyribonucleotides and as a linker arm between the glass surface and the single-stranded sequence of interest. The oligodeoxyribonucleotides of this hairpin stem–loop architecture with multiple phosphorothioate moieties have broad application in DNA chip-based gene analysis.
