This paper discusses the need to simultaneously monitor voltage unbalance and harmonic distortions in addition to root-mean-square voltage values. An alternative way to obtain the parameters related to voltage unbalance at fundamental frequency as well as voltage harmonic distortions is here proposed, which is based on the representation of instantaneous values at the axes and at the instantaneous Euclidean norm. A new power-quality (PQ) index is then proposed to combine the effects of voltage unbalance and harmonic distortions. This new index is easily implemented into existing electronic power meters. This PQ index is determined from the analysis of temperature rise in induction motor windings, which were tested for long periods of time. This paper also shows that these voltage disturbances, which are harmful to the lifetime expectancy of motors, can be measured by alternative ways in relation to conventional methods. Although this paper deals with induction motors only, the results show the relevance for further studies on other pieces of equipment.

This paper presents a new methodology to estimate harmonic distortions in a power system, based on measurements of a limited number of given sites. The algorithm utilizes evolutionary strategies (ES), a development branch of evolutionary algorithms. The main advantage in using such a technique relies upon its modeling facilities as well as its potential to solve fairly complex problems. The problem-solving algorithm herein proposed makes use of data from various power-quality (PQ) meters, which can either be synchronized by high technology global positioning system devices or by using information from a fundamental frequency load flow. This second approach makes the overall PQ monitoring system much less costly. The algorithm is applied to an IEEE test network, for which sensitivity analysis is performed to determine how the parameters of the ES can be selected so that the algorithm performs in an effective way. Case studies show fairly promising results and the robustness of the proposed method.

Compliant mechanisms can achieve a specified motion as a mechanism without relying on the use of joints and pins. They have broad application in precision mechanical devices and Micro-Electro Mechanical Systems (MEMS) but may lose accuracy and produce undesirable displacements when subjected to temperature changes. These undesirable effects can be reduced by using sensors in combination with control techniques and/or by applying special design techniques to reduce such undesirable effects at the design stage, a process generally termed ""design for precision"". This paper describes a design for precision method based on a topology optimization method (TOM) for compliant mechanisms that includes thermal compensation features. The optimization problem emphasizes actuator accuracy and it is formulated to yield optimal compliant mechanism configurations that maximize the desired output displacement when a force is applied, while minimizing undesirable thermal effects. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the method, two-dimensional compliant mechanisms are designed considering thermal compensation, and their performance is compared with compliant mechanisms designs that do not consider thermal compensation. The harmonic distortion (HD) exhibited by un-strained and biaxially strained fin-shaped field-effect transistors operating in saturation as single-transistor amplifiers has been investigated for devices with different channel lengths L and fin widths W(fin). The study has been performed through device characterization, 3-D device simulations, and modeling. Nonlinearity has been evaluated in terms of second- and third-order HDs (HD2 and HD3, respectively), and a discussion on its physical sources has been carried out. Also, the influence of the open-loop voltage gain AV in HD has been observed.

This work investigates the harmonic distortion (HD) in 2-MOS balanced structures composed of triple gate FinFETs. HD has been evaluated through the determination of the third-order harmonic distortion (HD3), since this represents the major non-linearity source in balanced structures. The 2-MOS structures with devices of different channel lengths (L) and fin widths (W(fin)) have been studied operating in the linear region as tunable resistors. The analysis was performed as a function of the gate voltage, aiming to verify the correlation between operation bias and HD3. The physical origins of the non-linearities have been investigated and are pointed out. Being a resistive circuit, the 2-MOS structure is generally projected for a targeted on-resistance, which has also been evaluated in terms of HD3. The impact of the application of biaxial strain has been studied for FinFETs of different dimensions. It has been noted that HD3 reduces with the increase of the gate bias for all the devices and this reduction is more pronounced both in narrower and in longer devices. Also, the presence of strain slightly diminishes the non-linearity at a similar bias. However, a drawback associated with the use of strain engineering consists in a significant reduction of the on-resistance with respect to unstrained devices. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. The discrete-time neural network proposed by Hopfield can be used for storing and recognizing binary patterns. Here, we investigate how the performance of this network on pattern recognition task is altered when neurons are removed and the weights of the synapses corresponding to these deleted neurons are divided among the remaining synapses. Five distinct ways of distributing such weights are evaluated. We speculate how this numerical work about synaptic compensation may help to guide experimental studies on memory rehabilitation interventions.

Electron beam induced second harmonic generation (SHG) is studied in Er(3+) doped PbO-GeO(2) glasses containing silver nanoparticles with concentrations that are controlled by the heat-treatment of the samples. The SHG is observed at T = 4.2 K using a p-polarized laser beam at 1064 nm. Enhancement of the SHG is observed in the samples that are submitted to electron beam incidence. The highest value of the nonlinear susceptibility, 2.08 pm/V, is achieved for the sample heat-treated during 72 h and submitted to an electron beam current of 15 nA. The samples that were not exposed to the electron beam present a susceptibility of a parts per thousand 0.5 pm/V.

In this work we present an analysis of harmonic distortion (HD) in graded-channel (GC) gate-all-a round (GAA) devices operating in saturation region for analog applications. The study has been performed through device characterization and two-dimensional process and device simulations. The overall study has been done on the total and third order HDs. When applied in the saturation regime as an amplifier, the GC outperforms conventional GAA transistors presenting simultaneously higher transconductance, lower drain output conductance and more than 15 dB improved linearity. The influence of channel length reduction on the H D is also analyzed. Although slight linearity degradation is observed in both the conventional and the GC devices when reducing the channel length, the HD presented by the GC transistor is significantly lower than the one showed by conventional device for any Studied channel length. This allows AC input signal amplitude up to 20 times higher than the conventional GAA for a same specified distortion level. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

We find that prospect theory behavior is significantly more prevalent than utility theory behavior in experiments involving multiple, real items. In the experiments, subjects were endowed with three items and asked the minimum payments they required to be willing to return one, two, or three of them. Our key observation is that prospect theory implies concavity of compensation demanded, whereas utility theory implies convexity. We examine whether the compensation demanded is convex or concave in the number of items returned. (JEL C91).

In 1983, Jager and Kaul proved that the equator map u*(x) = (x/\x\,0) : B-n --> S-n is unstable for 3 less than or equal to n less than or equal to 6 and a minimizer for the energy functional E(u, B-n) = integral B-n \del u\(2) dx in the class H-1,H-2(B-n, S-n) with u = u* on partial derivative B-n when n greater than or equal to 7. In this paper, we give a new and elementary proof of this Jager-Kaul result. We also generalize the Jager-Kaul result to the case of p-harmonic maps.

An inverse methodology is described to assist in the design of radio-frequency (RF) coils for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) applications. The time-harmonic electromagnetic Green's functions are used to calculate current on the coil and shield cylinders that will generate a specified internal magnetic field. Stream function techniques and the method of moments are then used to implement this theoretical current density into an RF coil. A novel asymmetric coil operating for a 4.5 T MRI machine was designed and constructed using this methodology and the results are presented.
