Universal banking, competition and risk in a macro model

A stylized macroeconomic model is developed with an indebted, heterogeneous Investment Banking Sector funded by borrowing from a retail banking sector. The government guarantees retail deposits. Investment banks choose how risky their activities should be. We compared the benefits of separated vs. universal banking modelled as a vertical integration of the retail and investment banks. The incidence of banking default is considered under different constellations of shocks and degrees of competitiveness. The benefits of universal banking rise in the volatility of idiosyncratic shocks to trading strategies and are positive even for very bad common shocks, even though government bailouts, which are costly, are larger compared to the case of separated banking entities. The welfare assessment of the structure of banks may depend crucially on the kinds of shock hitting the economy as well as on the efficiency of government intervention.

Infrequent Fiscal Stabilization

This paper studies discretionary non-cooperative monetary and fiscal policy stabilization in a New Keynesian model, where the fiscal policymaker uses a distortionary taxe as the policy instrument and operates with long periods between optimal time-consistent adjustments of the instrument. We demonstrate that longer fiscal cycles result in stronger complementarities between the optimal actions of the monetary and fiscal policymakers. When the fiscal cycle is not very long, the complementarities lead to expectation traps. However, with a sufficiently long fiscal cycle — one year in our model — no learnable time-consistent equilibrium exists. Constraining the fiscal policymaker in its actions may help to avoid these adverse effects.

The trypanosomatid evolution workshop London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine

The trypanosome evolution workshop, a joint meeting of the University of Exeter and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, focused on topics relating to trypanosomatid and vector evolution. The meeting, sponsored by The Wellcome Trust, The Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Disease of World Health Organization and the British Section of the Society of Protozoologists, brought together an international group of experts who presented papers on a wide range of topics including parasite and vector phylogenies, molecular methodology and relevant biogeographical data.

Seasonality and Temperature:Turtles in Hot Water?

Variation in temperature affects the biology of sea turtles at a range of scales. To elucidate the drivers of seasonality of nesting and duration of season, databases across four species of sea turtles (Caretta caretta n=37, Chelonia mydas n=64, Dermochelys coriacea n=44 and Eretmochelys imbricata n=36) at a global scale were created. By using remotely sensed sea surface temperature data, thermal profiles across the nesting season were generated. Duration of nesting season was correlated with latitude in all species but was more tightly coupled with temperature; seasons were significantly longer with increased mean SST. In general, nesting seasonality occurred at warmest time of the year. SST for the month before, month after and the month of peak nesting significantly affected the month of peak nesting.

Croft i els seus col·laboradors de la Universitat d'Exeter, al Regne Unit, han analitzat més de 750 hores de filmació sobre el comportament de les orques gravades en diferents anys i indrets, cosa que els ha permès proposar una explicació tan simple com sorprenent: els individus postmenopàusics serveixen d'acumuladors de coneixement ecològic.

Einige Ergebnisse von vergleichenden Untersuchungen in England und Deutschland zum Lehren und Lernen von Mathematik in Realitätsbezügen

In der Arbeit werden einige Resultate von vergleichenden empirischen Untersuchungen zu unterschiedlichen Konzeptionen eines realitätsbezogenen Mathematikunterrichts, wie sie in England und Deutschland häufig vertreten werden, dargestellt. Bei diesen Untersuchungen werden in verschiedenen Fallstudien, die u.a. auch strukturelle Unterschiede zwischen den Bildungssystemen in England und Deutschland und den zugrundeliegenden Erziehungsphilosophien berücksichtigen, Auswirkungen dieser Konzeptionen auf die Einstellung der Lernenden zum Mathematikunterricht, ihr Bild von Mathematik, ihr Verständnis mathematischer Begriffe und Methoden sowie ihre Fähigkeiten zur Anwendung mathematischer Methoden zum Lösen realer Problemaufgaben untersucht. Die hier dargestellten Erhebungen sind Teil eines längerdauernden Kollaborationsprojekts zwischen den Universitäten Exeter und Kassel.

La idea que da origen a este proyecto, pretende desarrollar ejemplos de las adaptaciones curriculares por niveles de dificultad de todos los bloques de contenidos del área de Matemáticas. A la hora de desarrollar este proyecto se tendrán en cuenta las adaptaciones curriculares por niveles contempladas en el MEP (Mathematics Enhancement Programme), dirigidos por el profesor David Burghes de la univesidad de Exeter (Reino Unido) adaptadas a la estructura educativa vigente en nuestro país (las líneas generales, tanto de su estructura como de su filosofía pueden encajar perfectamente en el currículo del área de matemáticas de la ESO)..
