Measuring the polarization of a single photon typically results in its destruction. We propose, demonstrate, and completely characterize a quantum nondemolition (QND) scheme for realizing such a measurement nondestructively. This scheme uses only linear optics and photodetection of ancillary modes to induce a strong nonlinearity at the single-photon level, nondeterministically. We vary this QND measurement continuously into the weak regime and use it to perform a nondestructive test of complementarity in quantum mechanics. Our scheme realizes the most advanced general measurement of a qubit to date: it is nondestructive, can be made in any basis, and with arbitrary strength.

Over the last twenty years, we have been continuously seeing R&D efforts and activities in developing optical fibre grating devices and technologies and exploring their applications for telecommunications, optical signal processing and smart sensing, and recently for medical care and biophotonics. In addition, we have also witnessed successful commercialisation of these R&Ds, especially in the area of fibre Bragg grating (FBG) based distributed sensor network systems and technologies for engineering structure monitoring in industrial sectors such as oil, energy and civil engineering. Despite countless published reports and papers and commercial realisation, we are still seeing significant and novel research activities in this area. This invited paper will give an overview on recent advances in fibre grating devices and their sensing applications with a focus on novel fibre gratings and their functions and grating structures in speciality fibres. The most recent developments in (i) femtosecond inscription for microfluidic/grating devices, (2) tilted grating based novel polarisation devices and (3) dual-peak long-period grating based DNA hybridisation sensors will be discussed.

A series of surface plasmonic fibre devices were fabricated using multiple coatings deposited on a lapped section of a single mode fibre and post-fabrication UV laser irradiation processing with a phase mask, producing a surface relief grating structure. These devices showed high spectral sensitivity in the aqueous index regime ranging up to 4000 nm/RIU for wavelength and 800 dB/RIU for intensity. The devices were then coated with human thrombin binding aptamer. Several concentrations of thrombin in buffer solution were made, ranging from 1nM to 1µM. All the concentrations were detectable by the devices demonstrating that sub-nM concentrations may be monitored.

We review the state-of-the-art in photonic crystal fiber (PCF) and microstructured polymer optical fiber (mPOF) based mechanical sensing. We first introduce how the unique properties of PCF can benefit Bragg grating based temperature insensitive pressure and transverse load sensing. Then we describe how the latest developments in mPOF Bragg grating technology can enhance optical fiber pressure sensing. Finally we explain how the integration of specialty fiber sensor technology with bio-compatible polymer based micro-technology provides great opportunities for fiber sensors in the field of healthcare.

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a non-invasive three-dimensional imaging system that is capable of producing high resolution in-vivo images. OCT is approved for use in clinical trials in Japan, USA and Europe. For OCT to be used effectively in a clinical diagnosis, a method of standardisation is required to assess the performance across different systems. This standardisation can be implemented using highly accurate and reproducible artefacts for calibration at both installation and throughout the lifetime of a system. Femtosecond lasers can write highly reproducible and highly localised micro-structured calibration artefacts within a transparent media. We report on the fabrication of high quality OCT calibration artefacts in fused silica using a femtosecond laser. The calibration artefacts were written in fused silica due to its high purity and ability to withstand high energy femtosecond pulses. An Amplitude Systemes s-Pulse Yb:YAG femtosecond laser with an operating wavelength of 1026 nm was used to inscribe three dimensional patterns within the highly optically transmissive substrate. Four unique artefacts have been designed to measure a wide variety of parameters, including the points spread function (PSF), modulation transfer function (MTF), sensitivity, distortion and resolution - key parameters which define the performance of the OCT. The calibration artefacts have been characterised using an optical microscope and tested on a swept source OCT. The results demonstrate that the femtosecond laser inscribed artefacts have the potential of quantitatively and qualitatively validating the performance of any OCT system.

The first is a onedimensional metal strip with an array of 4 sensors, which is capable of detecting the magnitude and position of a contacting load. This system is compared experimentally with a similar system using resistive strain gauges. The second is a two-dimensional steel plate with 9 sensors which is able to distinguish the position and shape of a contacting load. This system is compared with a similar system using 16 infrared displacement sensors. Each system uses neural networks to process the sensor data to give information concerning the type of contact.

Summary form only given. Broadly tunable compact visible laser sources in the spectral region of 500-650 nm are valuable in biophotonics, photomedicine and for many applications including spectroscopy, laser projection and confocal microscopy. Unfortunately, commercially available lasers of this spectral range are in practice bulky and inconvenient in use. An attractive method for the realization of portable visible laser sources is the frequency-doubling of the infrared laser diodes in a nonlinear crystal containing a waveguide [1]. Nonlinear crystal waveguides that offer an order-of-magnitude increase in the IR-to-visible conversion efficiency also enable a very different approach to second-harmonic generation (SHG) tunability in periodically-poled crystals, promising order-of-magnitude increase of wavelength range for SHG conversion. This is possible by utilization of a significant difference in the effective refractive indices of the high-order and low-order modes in multimode waveguides [2]. The recent availability of low-cost, good quality semiconductor diode lasers, offering the coverage of a broad spectral range between 1 µ?? and 1.3 µp? [3,4], in combination with well-established techniques to fabricate good quality waveguides in nonlinear crystals, allows compact tunable CW laser sources in the visible spectral region to be realized [2].

Compact CW lasers in the visible spectral region are of great importance for vast number of applications including biophotonics, photomedicine, spectroscopy and confocal microscopy. Currently, commercially available lasers of this spectral region are bulky, expensive and inconvenient in use. Also, there is a lack of diode lasers emitting in the visible spectral range, particularly in the yellow region, where a range of important fluorescent probes are optimally excited. An attractive way to realize a compact yellow laser source is second harmonic generation (SHG) in a periodically poled nonlinear crystal containing a waveguide which allows high-efficient frequency conversion even at moderate power level. In this respect, periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) waveguided crystal is one of the best candidates for efficient SHG. In recent years, the progress made with the fabrication of good quality waveguides in PPLN crystals in combination with availability of low-cost, good quality semiconductor diode lasers, offering the coverage of a broad spectral range between 1 µm and 1.3 µm, allows compact CW laser sources in the visible spectral region to be realized.

A compact all-room-temperature CW 73-nm tunable laser source in the visible spectral region (574nm-647nm) has been demonstrated by frequency-doubling of a broadly-tunable InAs/GaAs quantum dot external-cavity diode laser in periodically-poled potassium titanyl phosphate waveguides with a maximum output power in excess of 12mW and a maximum conversion efficiency exceeding 10%. Three waveguides with different cross-sectional areas (4×4μm2, 3×5μm2 and 2x6μm2) were investigated. Introduction - Development of compact broadly tunable laser sources in the visible spectral region is currently very attractive area of research with applications ranging from photomedicine and biophotonics to confocal fluorescence microscopy and laser projection displays. In this respect, semiconductor lasers with their small size, high efficiency, reliability and low cost are very promising for realization of such sources by frequencydoubling of the infrared light in nonlinear crystal waveguides. Furthermore, the wide tunability offered by quantum-dot (QD) external-cavity diode lasers (ECDL), due to the temperature insensibility and broad gain bandwidth [1,2], is very promising for the development of tunable visible laser sources [3,4]. In this work we show a compact green-to-red tunable allroom-temperature CW laser source using a frequency-doubled InAs/GaAs QD-ECDL in periodically-poled potassium titanyl phosphate (PPKTP) crystal waveguides. This laser source generates frequency-doubled light over the 574nm-647nm wavelength range utilizing the significant difference in the effective refractive indices of high-order and low-order modes in multimode waveguides [3]. Experimental results - Experimental setup used in this work was similar to that described in [3] and consisted of a QD gain chip in the quasiLittrow configuration and a PPKTP waveguide. Coarse wavelength tuning of the QD-ECDL between 1140 nm and 1300 nm at 20°C was possible for pump current of 1.5 A. The laser output was coupled into the PPKTP waveguide using an AR-coated 40x aspheric lens (NA ~ 0.55). The PPKTP frequency-doubling crystal (not AR coated) used in our work was 18 mm in length and was periodically poled for SHG (with the poling period of ~ 11.574 11m). The crystal contained 3 different waveguides with cross-sectional areas of ~ 4x4 11m2, 3x5 11m2 and 2x6 11m2. Both the pump laser and the PPKTP crystal were operating at room temperature. The waveguides with cross-sectional areas of 4x411m2, 3x511m2 and 2x611m2 demonstrated the tunability in the wavelength ranges of 577nm - 647nm, 576nm -643nm and 574nm - 641nm, respectively, with a maximum output power of 12.04mW at 606 nm Conclusion - We demonstrated a compact all-room-temperature broadlytunable laser source operating in the visible spectral region between 574nm and 647nm. This laser source is based on second harmonic generation in PPKTP waveguides with different cross-sectional areas using an InAs/GaAs QD-ECDL References [I] E.U. Rafailov, M.A. Cataluna, and W. A tilted fiber Bragg grating (TFBG) was integrated as the dispersive element in a high performance biomedical imaging system. The spectrum emitted by the 23 mm long active region of the fiber is projected through custom designed optics consisting of a cylindrical lens for vertical beam collimation and successively by an achromatic doublet onto a linear detector array. High resolution tomograms of biomedical samples were successfully acquired by the frequency domain OCT-system. Tomograms of ophthalmic and dermal samples obtained by the frequency domain OCT-system were obtained achieving 2.84 μm axial and 10.2 μm lateral resolution. The miniaturization reduces costs and has the potential to further extend the field of application for OCT-systems in biology, medicine and technology. © 2014 SPIE.

Full text: Semiconductor quantum dot lasers are attractive for multipletechnological applications in biophotonics. Simultaneous two-state lasing ofground state (GS) and excited state (ES) electrons and holes in QD lasers ispossible under a certain parameter range. It has already been investigated in steady-stateoperations and in dynamical regimes and is currently a subject of the intesiveresearch. It has been shown that the relaxation frequency in the two-state lasingregime is not a function of the total intensity [1], as could be traditionallyexpected. In this work we study damping relaxation oscillations in QD lasersimultaneously operating at two transitions, and find that under variouspumping conditions, the frequency of oscillations may decrease, increase orstay without change in time as shown in Fig1.The studied QD laser structure wasgrown on a GaAs substrate by molecular-beam epitaxy. The active region includedfive layers of self-assembled InAs QDs separated with a GaAs spacer from a5.3nm thick covering layer of InGaAs and processed into 4mm-wide mesa stripe devices. The 2.5mm long lasers withhigh-and antireflection coatings on the rear and front facets lasesimultaneously at the GS (around 1265nm) and ES (around 1190nm) in the wholerange of pumping. Pulsed electrical pumping obtained from a high power (up to2A current) pulse source was used to achieve high output power operation. We simultaneously detect the total output and merely ES output using aBragg filter transmitting the short-wavelength and reflecting the long-wavelengthradiation. Typical QD does not demonstrate relaxation oscillations frequencybecause of the strong damping [2]. It is confirmed for the low (I<0.68A) andhigh (I>1.2 A) range of the pump currents in our experiments. The situationis different for a short range of the medium currents (0.68A

Opto-Acoustic Endoscopy (OAE) requires sensors with a high sensitivity and small physical dimensions in order to facilitate integration into an endoscope of less than 1mm in diameter. We present fibre Bragg grating (FBG) and Fabry- Perot intrinsic fibre sensors for ultrasound detection. We present a structure profile characterisation setup to analyse tune the fibre sensors in preparation for ultrasonic detection. We evaluate the suitability of the different structures and grating parameters for ultrasonic sensing. By analysing the prepared gratings, we enable the optimisation of the profile and a simplification of the detection regime for an optimal interferometric OAE configuration.

Opto-acoustic imaging (OAI) shows particular promise for in-vivo biomedical diagnostics. Its applications include cardiovascular, gastrointestinal and urogenital systems imaging. Opto-acoustic endoscopy (OAE) allows the imaging of body parts through cavities permitting entry. The critical parameter is the physical size of the device, allowing compatibility with current technology, while governing flexibility of the distal end of the endoscope based on the needs of the sensor. Polymer optical fibre (POF) presents a novel approach for endoscopic applications and has been positively discussed and compared in existing publications. A great advantage can be obtained for endoscopy due to a small size and array potential to provide discrete imaging speed improvements. Optical fibre exhibits numerous advantages over conventional piezo-electric transducers, such as immunity from electromagnetic interference and a higher resolution at small sizes. Furthermore, micro structured polymer optical fibres offer over 12 times the sensitivity of silica fibre. We present a polymer fibre Bragg grating ultrasound detector with a core diameter of 125 microns. We discuss the ultrasonic signals received and draw conclusions on the opportunities and challenges of applying this technology in biomedical applications.
