Investigation on the seasonal distribution and abundance of various major taxa of phyto and zooplankton and the corresponding physico-chemical characteristics were carried out in four selected stations between the latitude 22°35.494N N-23°23.987 N and longitude 90°35.793 E- 90°49.061 E of the Meghna river system, Bangladesh. Drop count method was followed for the qualitative and quantitative analysis of both phyto- and zooplankton. A total of 41 phytoplankton genera belonging to 17 families and 13 zooplankton genera belonging to 11 families were recorded. Zooplankton growth cycle was noticeably less (3.0%) than the phytoplankton abundance almost throughout the study period. Quantity of plankton registered to increase chronologically from the upper to lower stretches of the river. During summer investigation the load of phytoplankton was recorded maximum (11,300-51,850 No/1). Ratio-wise quantitative difference between zoo- and phytoplankton in composition of the total standing crop fluctuated between 1.0:5.5 and 1:1037. Among the phytoplanktonic groups, Chlorophyceae was found to be dominating (95.0%) in all sampling stations. Protococcus, a single genus of Chlorophyceae played a unique role during summer, contributing the highest density of about 74.0%. The pattern of qualitative and quantitative difference of plankton standing crop in different sampling sites can be attributed to the existing physico-chemical characteristics, mainly water temperature, pH and hardness.

A total of 45 ponds used for fish polyculture were investigated in three zones of Bangladesh to identify the differences among the zones in respect to aqua-ecology, culture practices, fish productivity and health management. Four hundred and fifty fish from three zones were clinically examined by naked eye and histopathology. Out of total number of fish examined, 45 fish from Dhaka zones were examined for parasites and bacteria in addition to histopathology. Faded and haemorrhagic gill, skin, fin, scale loss and lesions were observed during fish examination. Aeromonas spp. Pseudomonas spp. and Streptococcus spp. were isolated respectively from 56%, 46% and 39% affected fish. Among the five water quality parameters analyzed, the highest average hardness and alkalinity respectively were recorded in Rajshahi (156 ppm and 142 ppm) followed by Dhaka (146 ppm and 132 ppm) and Chittagong (81 ppm and 90 ppm). The highest average pH was recorded in Mymensingh (7.52) followed by Rajshahi (7.13) and Chittagong (7.05). Water holding capacity of soil in Rajshahi zone was poor compared to other zones and farmers were found to be reluctant to fish farming.

A self-organizing map (SOM) was used to cluster the water quality data of Xiangxi River in the Three Gorges Reservoir region. The results showed that 81 sampling sites could be divided into several groups representing different land use types. The forest dominated region had low concentrations of most nutrient variables except COD, whereas the agricultural region had high concentrations of NO3N, TN, Alkalinity, and Hardness. The sites downstream of an urban area were high in NH3N, NO2N, PO4P and TP. Redundancy analysis was used to identify the individual effects of topography and land use on river water quality. The results revealed that the watershed factors accounted for 61.7% variations of water quality in the Xiangxi River. Specifically, topographical characteristics explained 26.0% variations of water quality, land use explained 10.2%, and topography and land use together explained 25.5%. More than 50% of the variation in most water quality variables was explained by watershed characteristics. However, water quality variables which are strongly influenced by urban and industrial point source pollution (NH3N, NO2N, PO4P and TP) were not as well correlated with watershed characteristics.

The study conducted on the salinity intrusion and seasonal water quality variations in the tidal canals of cochin. The main objectives are, salinity intrusion profile, water quality variation of the surface water of the canals, hierarchical utility of the water bodies and to understand the non-conservative components in the water body. The parameters monitored werepH,temperature, alkalinity, conductivity,DO(dissolvedoxygen),COD(chemical oxygen demand),BOD(biochemical oxygen demand0,chloride, total hardness, calcium hardness, dissolved phosphate, nitrate, total iron, sulphate, turbidity, total coliform and SUVA at 254nm. The tidal canals of GCDA were found to be creeks extending to the interior, canals inter connecting parts of the estuary or canals with seasonally broken segments. Based on utility the canals could be classified as: canals heavely polluted and very saline, canals polluted by urban waste , canals having fresh water for most part of the year and not much polluted, fresh water bodies heavily polluted. During the rainy months carbon fixation by plankton is nonexistent, and during the dry months Chitrapuzha becomes a sink of phosphate. The study indicated abiotic subrouts for dissolved phosphate and revealed the potential pitfalls in LOICZ modeling exercise on sewage ladentidal canals. It was also found that all canals except for the canals of West cochin and chittoorpuzha have fresh water for some part of the year. The water quality index in the durable fresh water stretches was found to be of below average category.

This study analyzed degrees of demineralization in bovine enamel using synchrotron microcomputed tomography (SMCT) and hardness measurements (Knoop hardness number, KHN). For 5 days, 40 bovine enamel blocks were individually subjected to a pH cycling model and treatment with fluoride dentifrices (placebo, 275, 550 and 1,100 mu g F/g) diluted in deionized water twice a day. Surface hardness number and cross-sectional profiles of hardness and mineral concentration (by SMCT) were determined. Integrated hardness (KHN x mu m) for sound and demineralized specimens was calculated and subtracted to give the integrated loss of hardness (Delta KHN) for the lesions. Increasing fluoride concentration in the dentifrices led to higher values for surface hardness after pH cycling and mineral concentration (g(HAp) cm(-3)), and lower values for Delta KHN (p < 0.05). From the present results, it may be concluded that hardness measurements revealed demineralization in all groups, which was lower in groups treated with dentifrice with a higher F concentration. SMCT and hardness measurements gave similar results in areas with higher demineralization, but diverged in areas with lower demineralization. Copyright (C) 2009 S. Karger AG, Basel

Statement of problem. Microwave irradiation has been suggested for denture disinfection. However, the effect of this procedure on the hardness and bond strength between resilient liners and denture base acrylic resin is not known.Purpose. This study evaluated the effect of water storage time and microwave disinfection on the hardness and peel bond strength of 2 silicone resilient lining materials to a heat-polymerized acrylic resin.Material and methods. Acrylic resin (Lucitone 199) specimens (75 X 10 X 3 mm) were stored in water at 37 degrees C (2 or 30 days) before bonding (n = 160). The resilient lining materials (GC Reline Extra Soft and Dentusil) were bonded to the denture base and divided into the following 4 groups (n = 10): Tests performed immediately after bonding (control); specimens immersed in water (200 mL) and irradiated twice, with 650 W for 6 minutes; specimens irradiated daily for 7 total cycles of disinfection; specimens immersed in water (37 degrees C) for 7 days. Specimens were submitted to a 180-degree peel test (at a crosshead speed of 10 mm/min) and the failure values (MPa) and mode of failure were recorded. Pretreatment and posttreatment hardness measurements (Shore A) of the resilient materials were also performed. Three-way analysis of variance, followed by the Tukey HSD test, was performed (alpha=.05).Results. The analysis revealed that, for all conditions, the mean failure strengths of GC Reline Extra Soft (0.95-1.19 MPa) were significantly higher (P<.001) than those of Dentusil (0.45-0.50 MPa). The adhesion of the liners was not adversely affected by water storage time of Lucitone 199 or microwave disinfection. All peel test failures were cohesive. There was a small but significant difference (P<.001) between the pretreatment (34.33 Shore A) and posttreatment (38.69 Shore A) hardness measurements.Conclusion. Microwave disinfection did not compromise the hardness of either resilient liners or their adhesion to the denture base resin Lucitone 199.

This investigation studied the effects of disinfectant solutions on the hardness of acrylic resin denture teeth. The occlusal surfaces of 64 resin denture teeth were ground flat with abrasives up to 400-grit silicon carbide paper. Measurements were made after polishing and after the specimens were stored in water at 37 degreesC for 48 h. The specimens were then divided into four groups and immersed in chemical disinfectants (4% chlorhexidine; 1% sodium hypochlorite and sodium perborate) for 10 min. The disinfection methods were performed twice to simulate clinical conditions and hardness measurements were made. Specimens tested as controls were immersed in water during the same disinfection time. Eight specimens were produced for each group. After desinfection procedures, testing of hardness was also performed after the samples were stored at 37 degreesC for 7, 30, 60, 90 and 120 days. Data were analysed using two-way analysis of variance (anova) and Tukey's test at 95% confidence level. According to the results, no significant differences were found between materials and immersion solutions (P > 0.05). However, a continuous decrease in hardness was noticed after ageing (P < 0.05). It was conclude that the surfaces of both acrylic resin denture teeth softened upon immersion in water regardless the disinfecting solution.

Objectives: To evaluate the effect of microwave disinfection on the flexural strength and Vickers hardness of 4 autopolymerized resins (Kooliner [K], Tokuso Rebase Fast [T], Ufi Gel Hard [U], and New Truliner [N]) and 1 denture base resin (Lucitone 550 [L]). Method and Materials: For each material, 48 specimens (64 x 10 x 3.3 mm) were made and divided into 6 equal groups (n = 8). In the control group, specimens were untreated. Before testing, specimens were immersed in 200 mL of distilled water and submitted to disinfection for 1 of the following irradiation times: 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 minutes. The irradiation procedure was performed twice. The flexural strength was determined using a testing machine MTS-810 and measurements of Vickers hardness were made on Micromet 2100. The values were submitted to ANOVA and Tukey's test (P = .05). Results: The K material showed a significant increase (P = .0010) in flexural strength following 5 minutes of disinfection compared to control specimens. The flexural strength mean values of materials T, U, and N were not significantly affected (P > .05) by disinfection. Compared to the control group, the K material showed a significant increase in hardness (P < .001) following disinfection for 3, 4, and 5 minutes. For material U, disinfection for 4 and 5 minutes produced specimens with significantly increased hardness values (P < .001) compared to the control group. For material N, disinfection for 5 minutes resulted in significantly higher hardness values (P < .001) than the control group. Conclusion: Regardless of the irradiation time, the flexural strength and hardness of the materials evaluated were not detrimentally affected by microwave disinfection. Purpose: Potential effects on hardness and roughness of a necessary and effective disinfecting regimen (1% sodium hypocholorite and 4% chlorhexidine) were investigated for two hard chairside reline resins versus a heat-polymerizing denture base acrylic resin. Materials and Methods: Two standard hard chairside reliners (Kooliner and Duraliner II), one heat-treated chairside reliner (Duraliner II +10 minutes in water at 55°C), and one standard denture base material (Lucitone 550) were exposed to two disinfecting solutions (1% sodium hypochlorite; 4% chlorhexidine gluconate), and tested for two surface properties [Vickers hardness number (VHN, kg/mm2); Roughness (Ra, μm)] for different times and conditions (1 hour after production, after 48 hours at 37 ± 2°C in water, after two disinfection cycles, after 7 days in disinfection solutions, after 7 days in water only). For each experimental condition, eight specimens were made from each material. Data were analyzed by analysis of variance followed by Tukey's test, and Student's t-test (p= 0.05). Results: For Kooliner (from 6.2 ± 0.3 to 6.5 ± 0.5 VHN) and Lucitone 550 (from 16.5 ± 0.4 to 18.4 ± 1.7 VHN), no significant changes in hardness were observed either after the disinfection or after 7 days of immersion, regardless of the disinfectant solution used. For Duraliner II (from 4.0 ± 0.1 to 4.2 ± 0.1 VHN), with and without heat treatment, a small but significant increase in hardness was observed for the specimens immersed in the disinfectant solutions for 7 days (from 4.3 ± 0.2 to 4.8 ± 0.5 VHN). All materials showed no significant change in roughness (Kooliner: from 0.13 ± 0.05 to 0.48 ± 0.24 μm; Duraliner II, with and without heat treatment: from 0.15 ± 0.04 to 0.29 ± 0.07 μm; Lucitone 550: from 0.44 ± 0.19 to 0.49 ± 0.15 μm) after disinfection and after storage in water for 7 days. Conclusions: The disinfectant solutions, 1% sodium hypochlorite and 4% chlorhexidine gluconate, caused no apparent damage on hardness and roughness of the materials evaluated. This study evaluated the effect of water-bath and microwave post-polymerization treatments on the flexural strength and Vickers hardness of four autopolymerizing reline resins (Duraliner II-D, Kooliner-K, Tokuso Rebase Fast-TR and Ufi Gel Hard C-UGH) and one heat-polymerized acrylic resin (Lucitone 550-L), processed using two polymerization cycles (short cycle - 90 minutes at 73°C and 100°C for 30 minutes; and long cycle - 9 hours at 71°C). For each material, thirty specimens (64 x 10 x 3.3 mm) were made and divided into 3 groups (n=10). Specimens were tested after: processing (control group); water-bath at 55°C for 10 minutes (reline materials) or 60 minutes (L); and microwave irradiation. Flexural strength tests were performed at a crosshead speed of 5 mm/min using a three-point bending device with a span of 50 mm. The flexural strengths values were calculated in MPa. One fragment of each specimen was submitted to Vickers hardness test. Data were analyzed by 2-way ANOVA followed by Tukey's HSD test (α=0.05). L microwaved specimens (short cycle) exhibited significantly higher flexural strength means than its respective control group (p<0.05). Water-bath promoted a significant increase (p<0.05) in flexural strength of K and L (long cycle). The hardness of the tested materials was not influenced by the post-polymerization treatments. Post-polymerization treatments could be used to improve the flexural strength of some materials tested.
